Pedro Vargas has a wonderful voice and sings with great feeling. He sings equally well ballads, boleros, rancheras, and songs with Cuban rhythms. Who else can sing duets with Benny More and his orchestra (Perdon and Obsecion) and rancheras with Miguel Aceves Mejia? Incredible! There are two CDs called "Lo mejor de lo mejor" for Pedro Vargas; this one and one produced in 1999. Both are excellent and only a few songs overlap, so if you love his voice, buy both of them! This one (2001) has better liner notes: it lists the composers, the orchestras or bands that accompany him, and the other singers in duets. The 1999 CD has no liner notes.

This is a good compilation by "El Tenor De Las Americas", which features some often shelved Vargas'recordings, such as "Granada", rarely re-issued on any format, "Noches de Mazatlan","Pecado","La Ultima Noche","Adios","Lamento Borincano", etc. Even though a great deal if its contents is re-hashed material from other recent CD's, in my opinion, the price is still right, you get 40 songs for ... which isn't bad....

This is a concert Pedro Vargas gave at the Kennedy Center, September 21, 1981. After being honor by the Organization of American States in Washington, D.C. There are only three concerts available on cd from Pedro Vargas, this is the third in quality, you can also buy the one on Bellas Artes or the one on Carnegie Hall.

There are two CDs called "Lo mejor de lo mejor" for Pedro Vargas; this one and one produced in 2001. Both are excellent; only a few songs overlap, so if you love his voice, buy both of them! This one, unfortunately has no liner notes; it does not tell you the composers, the musicians, nor the other singers in duets. "La negra noche" is a duet with Jorge Negrete; "Traicionera" with Libertad Lamarque, "Felicidades" with Julio Iglesias. Most of the rancheras--Ella, Corazon, corazon, La carinosa, Cuando vivas conmigo, Que bonito amor, El rey--are accompanied by the great Mariachi Vargas de Tenochtitlan. Many of boleros are accompanied by the big band of Mario Ruiz Armengol. Truly "the best of the best."

    This is a good song selection of his music. I think this is the only cd of his music that I have. I must say that most of the songs in this cd are from his later recordings(i.e when he was older). This cd that I am reviewing is not bad at all either. It tells you how good this "tenor de las Americas" was.

    This is without doubt the best collection of Mexican music I have ever heard. Just the way Pedro Vargas pronounces each word is music to the ears. His rendition of Solamente Una Vez is the best ever recorded. The selection of songs is outstanding including Piel Canela,Ella,and Cielito Lindo and so much more.. The only criticism I have is there is no recognition on the label to the other artists performing on some of the recordings with him. I know Julio Iglesias sang the duet on Felicidades but I did not know the other performers, however this is one of the best CD's I have ever purchased. With this collection of some of the most popular Mexican music ever written Pedro Vargas may be gone but he will never be forgotten.

    BMG/RCA's "Pedro Vargas Y Sus Amigos" has become a timeless classic. Here are classic duets originally recorded during the 40's and 50's by the legendary Mariano Rivera Conde's "RCA VICTOR MEXICANA" and the equally legendary Eliseo Valdes and his RCA Victor branch in Havana. Favorite Pedro Vargas/Libertad Lamarque duet classic hit songs like cuban composer Gonzalo Roig's "Quiereme Mucho", Mexico's Guty de Cardenas "Nunca" and the 1941 classic "Traicionera" are all on this CD. Also equally famous duets with Mexico's Jorge Negrete, Agustin Lara, ranchera great Miguel Aceves Mejia and Mexico's old time famous singing physician Dr.Alfonso Ortiz Tirado. Last but not least are two of the legendary Pedro Vargas/Beny More 1954, recorded in Cuba duets, "Perdon" and "Obsesion", composed by puertorican maestro Don Pedro Flores,all of which make this CD a must for all latin music collectors and Vargas fans. In re-issuing this classic on CD format RCA should have included more Vargas duets as "bonus tracks" such as "La Barca de Oro" also recorded during the early 40's with Argentina's Libertad Lamarque, a beautiful version of a lovely ballad we haven't heard in many years.
