SOPHISTICATED LISTENING.......2006-11-08

I am not a great fan of contemporary music, and have been looking to acquire some nice old-fashioned recordings: something with a bit of character, something of quality, something with a bit more complexity and sophistication, something that wasn't so much like everything else that I've heard. That being so, I purchased this disk on something of a whim. I cannot tell you how many times I have listened to it since. What I can say is that I will never be sorry that I did.

The disk is divided into four parts. There are, actually, four separate singers included- Joao Ferreira-Rosa, Jorge Fernando, Carlos Jose Teixeira and Jose Pracana - each of whom sings four out of the 16 songs. I am, personally, not as impressed by the immaturity of the second singers voice on this recording, but have found later works in which his voice has become much improved with age. What does particularly impress me, however, are the voices of two of - what, after further research, appear to me to be two of the most underrated male fado singers (also called fadistas????)- those of the first singer (João Ferreira-Rosa) and, most especially, the voice of the last (José Pracana). José Pracana's sound is the definitve example of what I love in a male Fado singer's voice. All I can say when I hear him sing is - mmmmmmmmmmm!yummmmmy!!!
