MotherDrum began as a small group of people drumming beneath the Discovery Bridge in Columbus, Ohio. The bridge provided wonderful reverberation, which led us to discuss the possibility of finding another site. We concluded that a large cave would provide the ambience we were seeking.
After some effort we made contact with a group that manages a nature preserve in south central Kentucky. The Greater Cincinnati Grotto granted us use of the Great Saltpeter Cave in Rockcastle County, Kentucky, to hold our first gathering. There were three gatherings in as many years, with as many as 30 people drumming by candlelight in the great Echo Auditorium inside the cave. Each gathering was recorded for historic preservation, Drumming Inside Mother Earth being the first. Though no recording can truly capture the atmosphere, or the feeling of drumming from the spirit deep within the womb of Mother Earth, the music we created speaks for itself.
