Customer Reviews:
"DISCIPLE" ....the actual reason to listen to this cd.......2007-07-12
Overall, a very strong showing for this band, even 35 years later after its initial release. Ton Johnston and Patrick Simmons, guitarists for this band, are standouts throughout, however the one actually overlooked track on this cd is "DISCIPLE." With a twin guitar attack, biting vocals, and wild twin drummer syncopatic displays, this one song should convert any true guitar rock fan into the "Doobie Brothers" camp. After this 6 plus minute display of guitar/drum histrionics; the next song " Snake Man", is a eye opening acoustic foray into early - sounding Chicago blues with a Doobies' West Coast feel. A 4 star was given to this cd ony because of the strange sounding song "cotton mouth", which just seems out of place on this record. Still, a "must buy" for any rock guitar fan.
Great Doobie.......2007-06-14
I think this is one of the 3 best Doobie albums. I have seen them countless times when drug, sex and rock and roll were in (70's). This album is their classic of all their music types. Brought back great memories.
What happened to the girls?.......2007-04-25
Great album but what happened to the half-naked girls that were on the vinyl jacket?I don't see them on the cd artwork. They don't make music like this anymore and it sounds great!
Great Album.......2007-03-23
I bought this album after a recommendation from a friend of mine who had this on vinyl. I took a listen to a few of the album tracks that aren't played on the radio and I loved it. Ran out and got the CD and its been one of my favorite albums.
Another reason for getting this album is that two songs on this album that are on the Greatest Hits CD (2001) are cut! Hearing "Listen to the Music" in its full, almost 5 minute entirety is great, as is the extended solo on "Jesus Is Just Alright"
"Disciple" has to be one of my favorite songs on the album, and "Cotton Mouth" is one of catchiest songs on the album, up there with "Listen to the Music"
Overall, great album.
A Classic of American Pop Music of the 70s... A "Must Have" for your 70s collection!.......2006-10-26
This album from the Doobies is not to be considered as "Get this for just one song". The whole album is worth the price! If you had it on LP, you won't be dissapointed to buy it again on CD! (P.S. Don't forget to get also "The Captain And Me", another excellent Doobies album!)

Couldn't agree more............2007-04-03
This is certainly one of my favorite opera recordings. I agree with the reviewers who mention that there are few if any "routine" moments in this opera. I am reminded of the taughtness of a work such as "Rigoletto".
The music is ravishing and the opera abounds with memorable arias and duets....the famous ACTI duet and also "Je Crois..." as well as "Comme Autrefois" and Zurga'a aria.
The choruses are lovely too.
The singers are outstanding as well. Barbara Hendricks can lack a bit of emotion in her singing but does have a ravishing tone and is technically wonderful.
Bizet's first famous opera is, I think, greatly underrated and deserves a more permanent place in the repertory.

Desert island disc.......2006-11-22
If you like opera, or even if you think you don't, you'll love this performance of The Pearl Fishers. This simple and moving story of friendship and love inspired Bizet to a wealth of melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic invention. The tenor/baritone duet Au fond du temple saint is justly famous; the tenor aria Je crois encore entendre is ravishingly beautiful; and the soprano's coloratura aria is equally lovely.
Fortunately, the cast and conductor are up to the demands of the music. Tenor and soprano must have light, agile voices with high extensions. John Aler and Barbara Hendricks actually make this music sound easy and effortless. Aler brings back memories of the great Leopold Simoneau, and he far exceeds Nicolai Gedda, an outstanding and versatile tenor whose heavier voice has to strain for the high notes of Je crois encore entendre. Hendricks catches the sweetness and innocence of Leila, and her coloratura is light, skillful, beautiful of tone. Gino Quilico matches Aler in their thrilling duet. Plasson, the orchestra, and the chorus give deeply committed performances. As a final bonus, the French pronunciation is very satisfying.
Ardent, exotic, lovely - the pearl among Pearlfishers.......2006-05-09
There is no question in my mind about which role Barbara Hendricks was born to sing.
In the role of Leila, she achieves a miracle. The voice is simply ideal for the music, like a swathe of silk mysteriously draped over the invisible air. The French language has an excellent exponent in her, too. This is the period, style and language in which Ms Hendricks beautifully exemplifies the best qualities required of a Leila.
John Aler is passionate and beautifully contained as Nadir, and an excellent Zurga is met with in Gino Quilico. The famous "duet from Pearlfishers" is most exquisitely performed here, and the lesser-known but no less lovely duet work between Leila and Nadir has never sounded better than in this recording.
The chorus, too, rises to the height of the occasion. Wonderfully supported by an excellent orchestra and conducted by Michel Plasson, the chorus add to the extraordinarily lovely spellbinding quality of this recording.
Les Pecheurs de Perles was one of the first operas I ever heard as a little girl. To this day, it remains a favourite, and I cannot recommend any recording of the opera more highly than this one.
The Pearl Fishers (Hendricks, Aler Plasson etc.).......2006-02-24
Not able to find a CD with Nicolai Gedda, I went ahead and ordered this version. Now I am another convert. These men and women are extraordinary talents and we are enjoying this CD immensely. Playing it ten times a day (almost).
I took this chance based on the reviews of others, and they are so right about this version of this fabulous Bizet operal, one of my favorites for over 50 years. Thank you.

The Best Ever.......2005-01-21
About 12 years ago, when I was first learning about opera, I relied heavily on the recommendations of a friend of mine, who I consider to be an expert. This friend is an opera devotee of the highest order; he has hundreds of opera recordings and attended his first Met performance in 1948 or so. He has been a lover of opera since his teens, and has committed many Italian librettos to memory. He had been trying to interest me in opera for years, but I was almost 40 when I finally decided that it was time I took the plunge. Naturally, I allowed him to suggest which recordings to acquire, which to steer clear of, and why.
When I shortly started asking, "What is this opera by Bizet called `the Pearl Fishers', he told me to "get the version with Micheau and Gedda - it's known as the best recording of it". So I ordered it, but in the meanwhile, I also acquired this 1988 version with Hendricks and Aler. When I mentioned it to my friend, he sniffed, "I don't know it, so I can't comment. But you can't go wrong with the Micheau / Gedda interpretation." I tried to tell him how much I liked the Hendricks / Aler recording, but he told me to wait until I'd heard the one he'd suggested.
Some weeks later I finally acquired the recommended classic recording, but, having grown accustomed to the Hendricks and Aler reading, I found the earlier version somewhat lacking. So I bought a new copy of what was now (and has remained to this day) my favorite opera recording, and mailed it to my old friend. I sat back to wait for his opinion.
I didn't wait long. He called me a few days later. "I congratulate you on your taste," he started. "I'm going to tell you something I never thought I'd say - this is not only far and away the best recording I've ever heard of this particular opera, it's one of the best opera recordings I've ever heard in my life!" He then proceeded to tell me how fresh, vibrant and unique he found this recording to be, and later told me that he listened to it every day for weeks, and recently told me he still hasn't grown tired of it.
So, anyone who is contemplating purchasing this glorious recording, I say go for it. My example proves that it will be loved by opera fans both old and new alike.

For all its exotically tinged, trademark Orientalism, so fashionable in late-19th-century France, Delibe's opera Lakmé is at heart a simple story of tragically misplaced love. This marvelous and sensitively wrought interpretation renders the intensity of that love story with a surprising emotional credibility. Conductor Michel Plasson allows the music's arching melodies to breathe and unfold leisurely, like a lovingly cultivated floral display; he even discovers hidden nuances within the formulaic fluff that pads Delibe's score. And his vision is shared by the outstanding principals here. As the titular Hindu princess, Natalie Dessay gives a jewel-like performance, full of stunningly shaped phrases and tapered notes that sound like spun silk (and one that can favorably compare with Joan Sutherland's account on London). Yet she also offers substance where others are satisfied with mere vocal beauty, conveying both the fatal innocence of her character and an intense capacity to suffer. Gregory Kunde portrays the English interloper Gerald with moving tenderness, while he manages the high tessitura of the part with elegance and flexibility. There's a sense of shared vulnerability that the pair bring to their first duet, one of several unforgettable touches on this recording. The cast is filled out with rich characterizations, most notably José Van Dam's imposingly authoritarian Nilakantha. The subtle intimacy of detail Plasson inspires throughout as well as the fine engineering makes this recording a winner. --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
The Greatest Lakme ever!.......2005-02-03
With her ability to color every phrase delicately, Natalie Dessay is undoubtedly this century's greatest coloratura soprano. Highly underrated, she could easily bring truth to her interpretation of this Lakme through her very good reading of the score and her ability to enunciate her French very well. Gregory Kunde is one of the greatest rising French tenors. Michel Plasson showcases Delibes' mystical and erotic music through a very passionate, delicate, and at the same time flowing reading of the music. A must for any fan of this great opera. I would recommend it highly over the Mady Mesple and definitely over the Sutherland version. Own it today, you won't be disappointed.
Wow...........2004-08-19
I shall not go into individual performers...there are several other reviewers that do that very well. My somewhat disjointed impressions are the following:
.....If there is a better Lakme...I don't think I could listen to it. This is as much beauty as I can tolerate.
.....I have listened to other recordings of Lakme but none matches this (and this is the only one that I actually own).
.....You usually find what you are looking for...if it is imperfections there are some within this recording; however, if it is beauty that you seek then you have found it.
.....One disclaimer: This was the first recording of Lakme that I heard, that may have biased my opinion relative to other recordings (i.e., First Loves being the most intense, etc.).
Cheers!!
Excellent.......2004-07-23
This is an opera full of beautiful moments and with one small exception, I could not ask for better soloists. Plasson's conducting carefully nurtures stunning sounds from the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse and the Choir is equally attentive. The "Bell Song," for example, is done at a more graceful pace (a little slower) than normally performed and the result is exquisite.
Natalie Dessay's sweet, crystalline voice lovingly captures Lakme's delicate character. She produces each note with such finesse and emotion that you are almost completely taken. The other singer to capture your appreciation is Gregory Kunde. There are tenors that I hold in great and high esteem, Placido Domingo is foremost for me. Giuseppe Di Stefano and Sergei Larin are examples of other tenors who I find just amazing but NEVER have I encountered a voice as stunning in a role as Kunde's. His Gerald is never strained, always smooth, and passionately urgent without being the slightest bit overdone. The most immediately likeable tenor voice I have ever heard on disc.
Jose Van Dam is a singer I came to appreciate most for his Amfortas in Wagner's "Parsifal". Here, devoid of Wagner's tortured arrogance, his voice is even warmer and more expressive. Bernadette Antoine (the small exception) is an overly "fruity" Mistress Bentson and this is the recording's only minor flaw, in my view (her chest register is rather poor and the sound isn't pretty). The other roles are all excellently sung, particularly Delphine Haidan's Malika, whose Flower duet with Lakme is the definition of 'sublime'.
The sound is clear digital. I can't recommend this opera enough. It's a very human story from the plot to the music (whatever the French word for 'verissimo' is). Speaking of 'French' the diction is totally convincing to my ears. I can find no faults.
Dessay and Plasson display the beauty of an exquisite work.......2004-05-17
This delightful work by Léo Delibes deserves to be on the standard operatic repertoire. To hear this music is like to be transported to a beautiful garden full of colorful flowers with enchanting fragrances. There is a delicacy, a charm in the arias and duets that is typically French, even with the composer's intention of giving some Oriental atmosphere. Michel Plasson has much to do with the success of this recording. His conducting is always observant of the delicacy of the score and requires of the orchestra and soloists a great observance of dynamics. Of course, a great conductor will not achieve anything in Lakmé without an outstanding coloratura soprano in the very difficult title role. Natalie Dessay has the perfect voice for Lakmé and also brings consummate artistry, making the Hindu maiden a flesh and blood character. Dessay portrays the delicacy and innocence of Lakmé using different colors in her voice, apart from mastering exquisite pianissimos. And her Bell Song is a dream, with a vivid interest in the words of the legend and echo effects on the bell refrains. Her high notes are totally effortless. In summary, an extraordinary performance in every respect. The rest of the cast complement Dessay nicely. Gregory Kunde has a sweet lyric tenor and matches Dessay beautifully in their duets, only there is some difficulty with the very high tessitura of Gerald. José Van Daam brings his usual vocal and theatrical flair to the role of Nilakantha. The rest of the cast is adequate. The Choeur and Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse are superb. There is no better recording of this opera than this one, even though it is also fascinating to hear Mado Robin and Mady Mesplé on their recordings. Dessay continues the heritage of these singers and Plasson gives the work an effective reading that gives justice to this neglected jewel.
THE Lakme of our time!.......2004-02-08
I first heard Lakme with Mady Mesple and subsequently Joan Sutherland. The music by Delibes is simply exquisite - breathtaking, fresh, delicate, intoxicating. I agree with the other reviewers that although The Bell Song is a highlight in Lakme, the rest of the opera features beautiful music ALL the way through. However, the attraction of this set is Dessay and Kunde. Their diction and finesse is so present in this opera that it puts Dame Joan's recording to shame. Mesple had a little bleat in her voice at that time but her diction was also superb although her voice tended to be a bit tinny. Sutherland's hashed diction leaves much to be desired and I feel that the role is not suitable for her. The crispness of the voice simply isn't there. But Dessay has a voice of pure brilliance and Kunde compliments her with a silvery tenor. Simply beautiful!

Average.......2007-05-08
The recording does not have the depth of sound that I was seeking. The selections are okay but could be better--however, this is only a preference. I more or less use the album as background music/noise; do not confuse Telemann with poor music but the recording, yes.
Fantastic!.......2005-02-05
In his day, George Philip Telemann was more popular than Bach. But, as a Telemann fan, I GREATLY enjoy this CD. Additionally, I especially like flutes and violins. The CD includes one of Telemann's best pieces, Suite in A minor for Flute (Suite a-moll) which is a wonderful delight. Telemann also composed concertos for trumpet and one is included here as well. If you haven't tried Telemann, this CD would be a good bet. It's quite versatile too--can be just listened to, used as background music, meditated to, etc.
Fine Collection of Baroque Concertos.......2004-02-16
Telemann certainly was a prolific composer. For some forty-six years he composed much for both church and court.
Composing so much, he understood well the capabilities of each instrument and composed much for each. Here, for flute, oboe and trumpet, as well as strings.
The trio for oboes is especially charming.
Excellent, a great find.......2002-08-01
I really enjoyed this CD because I couldn't find the Suite in a minor by Telemann, until now. A beautiful Rejouissance I must say. I would love to hear longer samples of all the classical music, because I appreciate it so much.

This is the 1947, full-orchestra version of Maurice Duruflé's Requiem, one of the 20th century's most beloved choral works. It's the first of three versions the composer made of the piece. Despite the enhanced intimacy of the smaller-scale versions, the original offers a rich orchestral tapestry, especially compelling in the performance by Michel Plasson's forces, without diminishing the work's radiant beauties or its spiritual depths. Those virtues are enhanced by the singing of Anne Sofie von Otter and Thomas Hampson. The chorus, a weak element in the Requiem, shines brighter on the rest of the disc, which gathers all of Duruflé's choral music. The Mass is more assertive than the Requiem and should be heard more often. It gets a powerful performance here, as do the miniature Motets, intense in their restrained beauties. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Such a Beautiful Requiem.......2006-04-20
If you're a fan of requiems (especially the ones made by Brahms, Faure, and Berlioz) then you'll love this one by Maurice Durufle. It sounds so angelic and passionate. Michel Plasson's superb handling of the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse and the Orfeon Donostiarra gives makes this piece of work shine with full fervor and magnificence. The vocal soloists, von Otter and Hampson, never miss a step. This is a beautiful, but sometimes neglected, requiem, and it should be more recognized from outside of France.
Great French Music.......2006-02-27
I love this composition and its rendition by Michael Plasson. However, the inept sound recording used on this CD greatly reduces its value. Wish it were issued on SACD.
All things bright and beautiful..........2005-09-01
I've listened to 4 different recordings of Durufle's Requiem closely: Santa Cecilia National Academy Orchestra Rome with Cecilia Bartoli and Conducted by Myung-Whun Chung, Voices of Ascension Chorus & Orchestra with Patricia Spence and Conducted by Dennis Keene, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus with Judith Blegen and Conducted by Robert Shaw, and this one. And I have to say that this is my favorite. The textures are richer and the performances by the orchestra and choir are better than the others. I will admit though that Cecilia Bartoli gets my vote for most beautiful performance of the Pie Jesu, but Anne Sofie von Otter's rendition is also very nice.
However, if you're looking for just one recording of Durufle's Requiem, this should be the one.
PERFECTION!!.......2001-08-13
This is one of the most beautiful CDs on the face of the planet. Durufle, a composer of the French Organ School, was a composer who possessed much reserve and this shows through in the restrained beauty of his music. Of particular interest is Track 16, UBI CARITAS--Durufle as well as the chorus are at their best here. The chorus sings the beautiful motet gently and with much feeling. The sublime beauty of this work of art instantly brings Durufle as an equal to that of Mozart, Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Beethoven. This music is not for those who like humungous bangs but rather those who can appreiate the quiet dignity of this man's work.

I know... it's not helpful if I don't agree with you, but...........2006-10-26
This is a collection of previously released arias so there's nothing new if you were looking to see if she had improved or something which I was.
Angela has a lovely voice and is lovely to look at. These things are obvious. But one does ask if we have made what you look like more important than what you sound like in opera. I can hear that she sings flat quite a bit. Her rendition of "Depuis le jour" is truly awful. Tremulous, and under pitched singing make it difficult to bear listening to. (If you want to hear a great one check out a young Leontyne Price or Sills) Angela has really great phrasing which makes the under pitched singing all that more of a mystery. Also her low notes, which can be raspy and breathy are very unattractive- as well her transitions between chest & head voice are really glaringly bad. She also slows things down sometimes not out of dramatic effect but when she needs more time to make a "beautiful sound" (something Kiri used to do too.) Which I'm sure the average composer if asked would not be too keen on. Her pronounciation is suspect too. I've heard a tripthong on her Italian vowel u many times. I know, she's from somewhere other than Italy- but so are most opera singers. If one is proclaiming themselves a DIVA then these things should be already taken care of - in my humble opinion- which doesn't matter because she's sold tons of recordings. I listened to the whole CD then admit to having given it away to a friend. Is this the Emperor's clothing or am I the only one that can hear these things? If she had bad phrasing but sang on pitch I would overlook that in view of the loveliness of her voice- but let's face it, these aren't Pendereckian compositions with suggestions for pitches- the composers wrote the pitches indicated for a reason. Sounds like I'm being too harsh? well, I feel the same way about Andrea Boccelli- lovely voice, flat way too much of the time. So now the whole world can hate me for thinking 2 commercial successes don't sing on pitch with the consistency expected at this level.
I know... this isn't helpful because you disagree. It's okay, there may be one person out there who would like an honest opinion even if they disagree, after all, I did cover, in detail, the perfomance and the performer and isn't *that* what these reviews are here for? to help people decide? :)
A True Diva.......2006-04-15
Her interpretation of Casta Diva revealed that Gheorghiu was the true Diva here, sensitive, expressive and yet dignified. She is a wholistic mixture, melting together her talents of beautiful voice, perfect technique and dramatic expression, which not only applies to each song, but often to the phrase or word level. She can convey the emotion of the piece without putting her voice in physical distress. She can also dial in the appropriate amount of "darkness" in her voice for the occasion and dramatic effect.
I do not think she sounded like Callas, whose voice appeared to be stronger and thicker, but less pure and agile than Angela's. Callas always seemed to have some tension in her voice, loud or soft. Gheorghiu can relax or tense up her voice as needed, increasing the dramatic effect, in both her low and higher registers. Finally Angela's lower voice is unmatched in its expressiveness and unstressed purity.
This CD is highly recommended but in order to experience her full artistic talents, including acting, get her DVDs.
Excellent voice!.......2006-02-24
If Maria Callas had a great voice, it would have sounded like this.
A Diva ? A Copycat.......2005-12-24
Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu's "Diva" album: Is this supposed to be a tribute to Maria Callas ? Every time I hear Gheorghiu sing, she sounds like Maria Callas. She's a soprano who is riding on the wave of Maria Calla's past fame. Their voices are very similar..ie. If you put on a Maria Callas record album of the same arias (most notably "Casta Diva", "Una Voce Poco Fa", "D'amor Sull'ari Rosee" "Je Veux Vivre", "Depuis Le Jour" "Vissi D'Arte and "O Mio Babbino Caro." Gheorghiu is an attractive, Mediterrenean-looking woman and her voice is a lot like Callas. I'm assuming audiences adore her because their guilty secret is that they want to see a Maria Callas re-born once more. But on the risk of being too critical, I will admit she has more beautiful tones. She and her husband Roberto Alagna sit on top of the opera world as its most charming, exciting couple/performers. Gheorghiu has a beautiful voice, with dramatic bite and radiant lyrical capacities. However, she has hard one too many Callas records and copied them.
UH WILL THE REAL CALLAS PLEASE STAND UP?.......2004-11-22
WHY IS IT THAT EVERY TIME I HEAR HER SING SHE SOUNDS LIKE MY OLD RECORDINGS OF CALLAS?? THIS CHICK NEVER SEEMS TO DO ANYTHING ORGINAL!!! IN THE ENTIRE CD I FELT LIKE I RATHER LISTEN TO CALLAS THAN TO THIS CALLAS WANNABE

Sokhiev + Mussorgsky = Excellent.......2007-05-31
I heard it live at concert, and it took me no more than a day to buy the cd. And it sounds even better!. Mr. Sokhiev is a great director, and Pictures at an Exhibition a great symphony. This makes a pleasant and wondeful combination
Another 'Pictures'? Another Tchaik Fourth? You Bet!.......2006-12-12
There seems to be an explosion of young, very young, conductorial talent in our midst. In addition to Mikko Franck, Vladimir Jurowski, Daniel Harding and Gustavo Dudamel, we now must count Tugan Sokhiev in their number. A North Ossetian (as is Valery Gergiev) born in 1977, this graduate of the Leningrad Conservatoire and winner of an international conducting competition has just finished his first year as music director of the Orchestre Nationale du Capitole de Toulouse, an orchestra many think France's finest outside Paris. He took over the orchestra from its long-time conductor, Michel Plasson, at the beginning of the 2005-2006 season. Earlier he spent one year as director of the Wales National Opera but left on somewhat clouded terms, although the details of that situation have not been easy to obtain; there is some consideration that a 25-year-old is not ready to be music director of an important opera company. At any rate, as far as I can determine this is Sokhiev's first recording on a major label and it's a humdinger. Of course, it consists of two Russian orchestral warhorses -- well, 'Pictures at an Exhibition' is really Franco-Russian, having been orchestrated by Ravel -- of which one could argue we don't need any new recordings. And they don't really tell us a lot about a new conductor, do they? Well, perhaps not, but both these performances are sensational. (It doesn't hurt that they are also in sensational sound -- plain stereo, not SACD, by the way -- some of the best recorded sound I've heard in a while.) It has been a while since I'd heard anything by the Toulouse orchestra but it seems to me it is miles above its former level, or maybe this is partly due to Sokhiev. At any rate, the orchestra is strong in every department -- silken and luxurious string sound, quintessentially French plangent and characterful woodwinds, brilliant brass, percussion (especially in the Mussorgsky) just this side of over-the-top (and precisely what the piece needs).
Sokhiev's interpretations of both the Mussorgsky and the Tchaikovsky are notable for their excitement, their emotionality, the required delicacy, élan and rhythmic precision, and consummate instrumental balances.
I frankly can hardly wait to hear what this young man will come up with next. I'd love to hear what he would do with central European classics and even more what he'd do with Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, Chabrier, Dukas, Roussel et al. I'd be inclined to guess the latter would be scintillating, the former possibly still a bit unformed. I guess we'll have to wait and see. Meanwhile, this CD seems to find itself back in my player (and in my car, and in my Discman) again and again.
