A modern interpretation of tango classics........2000-09-27

A modern interpretation of some classics by classically trained musicians. This is not the sound of the orquesta tipica composed of piano, violin, bandoneón, and bass. It is rather a trio composed of guitar, bandoneón, and piano. I purchased this disk because Trio Pantango did such a nice job with "Milonga al Toque" on the compact disk «¡Bailemos Tango!» I have a fondness for the milonga style of tango, and there are 3 milongas on the disk «El Ultimo Cafe». The disk is predominantly Argentine tango, although there is one vals (tango waltz) on the disk.

Trio Pantango produces a "different sound" than an orqusta tipica, and that is attributed to the instruments used. Tango music must sound good and dance well. That is what I got with this disk. I was privileged to dance to the live music of Trio Pantango in Montreal at a tango festival. At first I did not like the sound, but I later learned that was because there was a problem with the sound system in the church where the dance was being held. Now that I have listended to the music on a good sound system, I am pleased. The classical training of all three musicians shows through. Trio Pantango wrote new arrangments of well known music, and they performed it well.

Included in this disk is music that I love to dance to: Piazzola, Pugliese, Gardel, and Canaro, to name a few.. You may find some of the pieces rather "jazzy" in nature. That is part of the appeal. I was so impressed with this disk that I ordered another disk by Trio Pantango, «El Garrón».
