5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Great sound and great song!.......2007-05-19

I loved the song "A New Day" after hearing it on the radio. I tracked it down and ordered the CD. All the songs are terrific.

Own it! It's all worth it!
"You are the new day" is my personal favorite song.

4 out of 5 stars My dad loves it.......2007-02-13

If he likes it then I am happy. Not my cup of tea. I like the idea that there where some Beatles tunes. Dad is 57 I am 36 might be the difference in age. NOt sure. Just not my cup of tea

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2006-04-22

I was very amazed when I first heard this album. Their sound is like no other. They are so unique that you can't compare them to other acapella groups.

I can say that their sound is better than a mixed choir because even though the King's Singers is only composed of 6 members. Their sound volume can beat a 30 member choir due to the quality of their voice.

My favorite is "It Was Almost Like A Song" because of the countertenor's very light voice. The baritone part was also awesome as he dominated the scene when he took the melody.

Overall, great album. This has to be one of the King's Singers best albums released. All songs are great that you can't resist missing a moment on listening it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful singing; clever arrangements.......2002-06-14

I have been a fan of The King's Singers since their debut recording thirty years ago. New Day is one of my favourite albums. It has the terrific optimistic song "New Day," but many other wonderful tracks.

"Can't Buy Me Love" is sung as if it had been written by one of the Renaissance madrigal writers when he was in a very good mood. There are other up tempo tracks like this one, including Abba's "Money, Money, Money" and "The Rhythm of Life," but the CD also includes some romantic, lush singing in songs such as "Three Times A Lady," "The Summer Knows" and "It Was Almost Like A Song."

The clever arrangement of Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic?" begins with an extract from a sombre Chopin Prelude in C minor.

Highly recommended.

Amazon.com essential recording

Disney's Snow White, the world's first animated musical feature (1937), is still a standard in the industry. Though 1930s recording technology was primitive by today's standards, the Disney music studios have always used the available technology to its fullest, and this recording still stands up. The mature but hauntingly childlike Adriana Caselotti as Snow White is a unique vocal presence, and the songs include "Whistle While You Work," "Heigh-Ho," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come." The score is nearly as great an accomplishment as the film itself. --John Sanchez

5 out of 5 stars The Churchill's are very talented persons........2007-02-13

When I was 6, I already had a very good sense of what is a fine music score. I'm 73 now and still loving that music.

5 out of 5 stars One Song.......2006-02-19

I bought this album almost especially for the piece of music entitled "Special Sort Of Death." It does sound creepy but that's what I loved about it. From I saw the film I was like I have to have that.

Anyway another reason for me purchasing this album was the main titles for the film I love the ochestration. My favourite song on this album would have to be One Song followed by with A Smile and a Song.

And number 5 (a piece of music) I can't remember what it's called but it is creepy too the part that has snow white running through the woods.

Someday my prince will come is nice too. Adriana's voice is a little high and annoying sometimes though. But it's still nice to listen to. I listen to this album alot it's very nice and I like to listen to the version of One Song that is played at the end of the movie.

4 out of 5 stars good soundtrack for halloween.......2005-07-14

first of all, i have seen the movie and the hag scares me very much. about the music,it's not good music for children because the orchestral moving creates dark suites. the other part of makin' pies is no exception. i listened to special sort of death on a site called mp3.com and the beginning is very disturbing almost, because it's when the queen appears as the old witch and she plots to destroy snow white
Queen:(laughing)it's not for you, it's for snow white
anyways, bye-bye

5 out of 5 stars REMasterpiece!.......2003-01-21

This soundtrack is a perfect compliment to the film, and It's gloriously remastered to make you feel you are still watching and not just listening to the music from the movie itself.

In the liner notes I read the original soundtrack only consisted of five songs, the five songs we hear sung in the film. "One song/I'm Wishing", "Hi Ho", "The Yodeling Song", "Some day my prince will come", and "Whistle while you work". Over the years, the instrumental musical score was thrown in to create a wonderful masterpiece of a soundtrack.

I highly recommend purchasing this. If you like the music from the movie, you will love this. After hearing this for the first time(I've now heard it at least 100, thanks to my 2 yr. old), the movie is brought out to be more of a musical adventure as well as a wonderful story to be told.
This is my son's favorite c.d., and he has so much fun dancing and singing along.

5 out of 5 stars A Magical, Delightful Soundtrack.......2002-10-07

This was the first of the newly remastered and expanded "Disney classic soundtracks" that I purchased for my collection, and it's still my favorite. How wonderful to have, not only the vocals from the old vinyl version ("I'm Wishing/One Song," "With a Smile and a Song," "Heigh-Ho," "Bluddle-Uddle-Um-Dum," "The Dwarfs' Yodel Song" (and if you don't want to get up and dance to it, there's something wrong with you!), and "Some Day My Prince Will Come"), but the background instrumentals from the track, never before available to the at-home audience. The "Queen Theme," the chilling "Far Into the Forest," and "I've Been Tricked" particularly bring scenes from the movie springing to mind. There are also two songtracks that were cut from the film print. If you're a Disney-lover, your collection must positively include this CD.

Album Description

The five virtuosi of Canadian Brass have made the brass quintet an exciting vehicle for serious concert music. The quintet — now in its 34th season — consists of Joe Burgstaller, trumpet; Stuart Laughton, trumpet; Jeff Nelsen, French horn; Gene Watts, trombone; and Chuck Daellenbach on tuba. The group has a long history of recording classical repertoire. They have a special affinity for Baroque music, which requires the brilliance and musical structure that has become the Canadian Brass' trademark. Their more than 50 recordings to date include works by Purcell, Vivaldi, Gabrieli, Pachelbel, Beethoven and Wagner — all in meticulously crafted transcriptions that are setting new musical traditions in brass performance. They are especially drawn to the works of J.S. Bach. The Canadian Brass sprang from modest and highly experimental roots in Toronto, Ontario, in 1970. The brass quintet was not established as a serious concert ensemble at that time, and it proved an irresistible challenge to Gene and Chuck. Their imagination and consummate musicianship eventually elevated the art of the brass quintet to what it is today. Thanks to their pioneer status, the quintet developed a unique character and rapport with audiences that proved so successful that it has been emulated by many other ensembles. Canadian Brass master the gamut of concert presentations — from formal classical concerts to music served up with lively dialogue and theatrical effects. No matter what the style, the music is central and performed with utmost dedication and excellence. Having started with the very limited base of traditional works for brass, Canadian Brass set out to create their own musical world by transcribing, arranging and commissioning more than 200 works; the most recent being the brilliant Quintet by Michael Kamen. They are not only presenting works in the classical repertoire but continue to take daring leaps into jazz, contemporary concert music and popular songs. Most of this music, including the Quintet, is published by Hal Leonard. It is the inspiration and musical staple of students and brass ensembles in North America and Europe. All members of the Canadian Brass are keenly interested in training the next generation of players. On their travels around the world, performing on gold-plated Yamaha instruments, they often pause for master classes. The famous five are chamber quintet-in-residence at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California. Additionally, they have created an innovative brass summer course at the famous Eastman School of Music. They have been invited by the Canadian Government to play for visiting heads of states on numerous official occasions. There is no letting up for the Brass who posses a childlike love for what they do. It comes so naturally, it's hard to imagine them ever stopping!

5 out of 5 stars The Whole Gamut.......2007-03-09

I was introduced to this CD via YouTube. A brass player advised me to take a look and listen. It was one of the highlights of 07 for me. As a musician with no small amount of background, I can truthfully say that this reminds me of moments in my own career when I was blessed to be in the presence of greatness. The Canadian Brass is and established group of the highest caliber. Magic Horn is a good mix of styles and genre. The Bonus, a musical video filmed in a beautiful gorge west of Toronto is ethereal. The only sad part of the CD/Video is the commemoration at the end of Quintet. The loss of Michael Kamen as a composer is everyone's loss. What a gorgeous tribute. More Please!!

5 out of 5 stars Music, Passion, Joy - Indeed!.......2005-02-19

Few recordings of any music type find their way into my library "sound unheard". Works of The Canadian Brass have typically found their way into my library just that way - they simply never produce anything but the best!

Magic Horn would certainly have been added to my collection at some point without a prior listening, but I had the great fortune to attend a recent CB concert where much of this beautiful music was played. Incidentally, if you've never attended a live CB performance, you've robbed yourself of one of the great musical experiences in life. Their recordings clearly reveal the members as masters of their trade - they are consummate musicians. However, what doesn't come across in the CDs is that they are entertainers of the highest caliber as well! Simply put, a CB concert is a guaranteed "BLAST" - it's the best sort of treat!

Now, back to the subject at hand: the key word here is "Magic". The repertoire of The Canadian Brass is astounding in its breadth and depth, and the selections of Magic Horn demonstrate once again, that nobody else does it quite like these guys. Who else in this genre would reprise the 80's Motown hit With You I'm Born Again - how appropriate, as it is certainly born again here. Astor Piazzolla's Cuatro Tangos gets an enthralling interpretation with trumpeter Burgstaller's fiery arrangement. Bramwell Tovey's Santa Barbara Sonata is simply sublime - I would gladly have purchased this CD if it only contained this piece! In what might just be the CD's finest moment (in the movement entitled "Preacher on the Pier") the familiar tune of J.S. Bach's hymn (Now thank we all our God) enters, "floating" on piccolo trumpet in counterpoint above the other parts - I believe Bach would heartily approve! He would undoubtedly approve of the inclusion of his Concerto in G Major. Frescobaldi's Toccata is a lyric beauty, as is Mozart's Rondo. Excerpts of Handel's Water Music and a Paganini Caprice round out the classical offerings on Magic Horn very nicely, indeed! The Ellington-Henderson Echoes of Harlem is an absolute gem - making me yearn for that bygone era! And, Quintet (so aptly named as the "bonus" track) - wow, what a bonus! The enhanced CD Feature (Music video of Quintet) is a very nice added touch.

Canadian Brass fans will no doubt be grabbing up Magic Horn in serious numbers. It's a sure bet that what you get with CB is musical expression at the summit. It's true, the group has undergone personnel changes over the years, but the anchors (Gene Watts on trombone, and Chuck Daellenbach on Tuba) remain; plus Stuart Laugton on trumpet (an original CB member) has returned! These stalwarts are an inspiration - a blessing for so many fans who are thankful that this group endures and continues to craft only the finest!

Not blessed with jazz chops, Doris Day is nonetheless an irresistible cute performer on these soundtrack cuts from her first three starring roles (Romance on the High Seas, My Dream Is Yours, and It's a Great Feeling). She's convincingly breathy on "I'll String Along with You" and sasses nicely on the King Cole Trio-like "Put 'Em in a Box." A guest shot with Bugs Bunny and Tweety on "Freddie, Get Ready" assures that this disc will never be dinner-party fodder, but it's hardly the strangest thing here. That honor goes to "Tic Tic Tic," an amiable little number that uses the Geiger counter as a metaphor for Day's love-struck heart. --Rickey Wright

I remember switching channels as a kid, trying to find something other than cowboy garbage or leaveittobeaverish suburban hymns and getting THIS blonde dudshell - the sightandsound of her is enough to put you back in prepubescency - I can't believe anybody, even Southern Baptists and Bush voters, would willingly listen to or look at this yellow painted-grin mannekin. "Jazz chops" the man says. This cloneofsomethingorother could NOT sing jazz. For that, try (Anita O')Day. WHERE do you think these Hollywood committemen got the idea for this apparition?
You're better off with American Idol. At least something could go "wrong".

5 out of 5 stars great historical overview of Doris Day.......2006-02-28

I don't understand the slightly bitchy tone to the People and Amazon.com reviews of this cd. "Not blessed with jazz chops..." and "this collection marks the moment when the insinuating, sexy performer of 1945's 'Sentimental Journey' began to disappear". This cd is an overview of when Doris Day left big band singing and became a movie star and star singer for Columbia records. Some of the songs are mediocre, but that's not the fault of the singer. My favorite songs are the ones from the "Romance on the High Seas" soundtrack (1948, her first movie) where she definitely does show jazz chops.

4 out of 5 stars When she sighs, a song begins..........2003-07-20

For many years, the only version of Doris Day's first movie hit "It's Magic" was only available in her slick, retooled version. Here you get not only the original, more raw version but a reprise as well. It's a must for Doris addicts who can't get enough of her sunny gumshun. All the movie-songs from "Romance on the High Seas", "My Dream Is Yours" and "It's A Great feeling" are here, and it's a treat listening to "Tic Tic Tic", "That Was a Big Fat Lie" "I'm In Love" and two versions of "It's You or No One" all in one sitting. Booklet is also fab, featuring lots of Dodo pics and movie memorabilia.

        5 out of 5 stars Touching Rendition.......2003-01-07

Whenever The Doris Day movie, "My Dream Is Yours" is playing on TV, I have to stop to watch it, just so I can see Doris sing one of my favorite songs. When she begins to sing "I'll String Along With You" to her little boy at bedtime, it gets to me everytime. (sniff-sniff) The only problem is, Jack Carson and Eve Arden's dialog, keeps getting in the way. Finally, I can hear Doris sing that song without interuption.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT POP SINGING.......2001-02-16

If people remember Doris Day at all today, it is probably as a middle aged "virgin" in romantic comedies playing opposite leading men like Rock Hudson, James Garner or Cary Grant. But Day started her long, distinguished career as a big band singer and she was absolutely one of the best. It was as a singing ingenue that she first appeared on the screen and this CD proves her worth in 3 of her first movies: "Romance On The High Seas" in which she sang the Jule Styne/Sammy Cahn pop classic 'It's Magic', "My Dream Is Yours" which featured 'I'll String Along With You' (Warren & Dubin) and "It's A Great Feeling" (Styne and Cahn again) in which she sang songs like 'Blame My Absent-Minded Heart.' Almost all of the 17 numbers is issued for the first time and we can enjoy Day's mellow, sweet, pitch-perfect, charming voice in all of them. The sound, although taken directly from the soundtracks of 1948 and 1949, is quite good. This is great pop singing and worthwhile for anyone interested in Day or in those innocent Warner Brothers musical movies.

4 out of 5 stars A Second Collection of Rarely Heard Russian Opera Music.......2005-10-05

Naxos has released a second collection of Russian tenor arias by Vladimir Grishko. Like the first volume, we have a beautiful tenor voice treating us to some rarely heard arias from operas not often performed outside of Russia. Grishko has good control of his voice which is a somewhat light and agile one that is free from strain. Probably the only familiar pieces to non-Russian listeners would be the brief orchestral excerpts from Glinka's A LIFE FOR THE TSAR and Polovtsian March from Borodin's PRINCE IGOR so listening is a treat in and of itself.

The two strengths of this recording are similar to those of the first volume: there is a variety to the music on the disc and Grisko's overall performance. While this is a good disc, it is not quite as strong as the first collection. The orchestral performances are somewhat inconsistent. Also the selections themselves do not have a great impact, at least in comparison with those of the first set. Still, this recording at a price that is more than reasonable will add variety to any operatic library.
