Editorial Reviews
The smiling cartoon iguana on the cover of Iguazú's self-titled debut should be replaced by a chameleon because, even though it's based in the Latin and Brazilian traditions, this tight five-piece ensemble changes tempos and moods throughout the disc - often at the drop of a hat within a single tune. Perhaps it's a little self-indulgent for a contemporary-jazz band to have four tunes clocking in at more than seven minutes, but composer/guitarist rick howard and his cohorts keep every second entertaining. On "The Hedonist," Ray Naccari draws us in with a circus-like swirl of synth sounds that gives way to tropical vibes and a jazz-fusion jam between acoustic piano, Howard's electric guitar, and Chacho Ramirez's percussion. The equally lengthy "Thanks, Kenny" is similarly multi-faceted, starting with an elegant piano-guitar meditation, before swinging into a straightahead jazz style. While Howard's distorted rock-guitar explosion on "Iguana Man" adds intensity, mostly the band sticks to creative twists on samba grooves and laid-back acoustic Brazilian ballads that conjure the softhearted romantic leanings of Dori Caymmi (Howard's vocal on the closer, "Lisa," evokes Ivan Lins, as well). Iguazú impresses most by its tag-team approach to most of these pieces, switching off instruments for lead melody and harmony sections, and then coming out of nowhere with trumpet, vibe, and percussion solos. The only drawbacks are the occasional use of spacey synth sounds and a noodling guitar intro to the album that aims to lay foundation but after a while just drones on.

Product Description
It's safe to say that IGUAZU is Latin inspired. After all, the music incorporates Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms into its eclectic sound. But it is so much more. The vast influences that have shaped the musical life of each individual band member have blended to create an exciting and different approach to the music. Even though the IGUAZU sound is unique, you won't find yourself listening to ten variations of the same song on the debut recording. IGUAZU is truly a fusion of musical styles: Latin, Jazz, Funk, Rock and more, but always unmistakably IGUAZU.

Album Description
From "Orlando" to "The Tango Lesson" and onward, director Sally Potter has always been closely involved with the soundtracks to her films--with outstanding results. This score for "Yes" is no different, as it weaves diverse music--including Philip Glass, Gustavo Santaolalla, Kronos Quartet, "Fawn" (by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan), and Eric Clapton with BB King--into both a superb tapestry for this motion picture and as a compelling listening experience on its own.Further original music by Sally Potter was made with the participation of long-term collaborator, the celebrated guitarist, composer and improviser Fred Frith, who has played on Sally's last four films. Frith has composed for Ensemble Modern and Asko Ensemble amongst others. Best known world-wide as an improvising guitarist, he played on albums ranging from The Residents and Reni Lussier to Brian Eno and Amy Denio.
Customer Reviews:
An aural journey through diverse cultures.......2005-06-28
From hypnotic instrumentals to howling blues to middle eastern influenced dances to chill dance grooves to classical piano to latin salsa, the soundtrack takes you on an aural journey through diverse cultures. I'm sure it reflects the culture clash depicted in the movie's storyline.
Listening to the sample tracks (at Barnes & Noble.com) makes me wish that I lived in a more culturally diverse area... This is the type of movie I have to watch on DVD because theaters won't risk showing independent films here.
To find the sample tracks at B&N search for "Yes" as the title, then sort the results by "date released". Since it just came out, it should be near the top of the list. Enjoy.
BTW, my 4-star rating is based only on the sample tracks I was able to hear.

Album Description
Alberto Williams (1862-1952) is a composer whose works are little known outside his homeland of Argentina, where they are held in the highest esteem. After studies at the Paris Conservatory he returned to Argentina in 1889 and concertized throughout the country, studying at the same time the forms, melodies and rhythms of Argentine folk music. From then on he dedicated his compositional activities to the founding of a new national style; he created concert series and founded a conservatory in Buenos Aires, which he led until 1941, and which developed branches throughout the country. He wrote 136 works including nine symphonies.
