Virtuoso Players Gild the Lilly.......2007-04-19
Reviewers who write that these are fine musicians playing lousy arrangements are correct. That's it exactly. The slower cuts are better than the up-tempo ones. Apparently this CD is a big hit with bagpipe tooters. So be it. The rest of us should pass it by or purchase it used.
Keep looking - there is much better stuff than this.......2005-10-05
This album is a perfect example of how a bad arrangement can ruin great music despite the best efforts of great musicians. Everything about this recording is right; selection, performers, sound engineering. Except that the tracks are horribly over-arranged with all sorts of distracting, subtracting variations and trite bridging passages.
Diasppointed.......2005-07-12
I am not saying the music is bad or the quality is lacking, because it is not. If you are looking for traditional music played in the traditional way, then this CD is not for you. It is like listening to everyone's interpretation when they sing the "Star Spangled Banner". There is no need to jazz things up that were not written to be. The titles are old but the variations on the score have a lot to be desired if you wanted to hear these songs played the way they were meant to be played.
This album is an absolute disaster.......2005-06-08
It's said that music soothes the savage beast, but bagpipes will do just the opposite. They will make the hair on your neck stand on end, your blood pressure go through the roof and prepare you to go to war. This album does neither.
The one piece which should most strongly produce the desired result is Scotland the Brave. In this album it is three minutes and twenty seven seconds, the first minute an ten of which are dedicated to fanfare. After that an orchestra plays some stylized version and, I think, I can detect a hint of bagpipes in there somewhere. When one has heard it done "correctly", one can recognize this as a total disaster.
Amazing Grace by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards has a version that is just about right. (And that selection gives one the ability to listen to a sample. I can see why this one doesn't!)
Take My Advice, I'm Only Tryin' to School Ya -.......2004-07-07
I bought this album based on the rave reports of the other reviewers, and could NOT be more pleased with the result. Although not Scottish, I am a long-time bagpipe lover, and this album evokes visions of the Black Watch and other highland pipers moving through their intricate paces. The music is an aural feast, and the sound quality is excellent. I keep it in the CD player in the car and find that a quick drive or a long commute both become pleasures when I'm listening to it. Take my advice - if you have even a slight interest in pipes, drums or brass, you're going to love this album. (This is the first time I have ever written a review; it's a very compelling album!)

Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous CD.......2003-09-16
I actually haven't taken this CD out of the player since I got it. In my humble opinion. Hyperion is the classiest label going; in fact, I'll buy Hyperion CDs even without being familiar with the singers, because I trust the producers. I saw this CD classified in the folk section at the library--but I knew better. Marie McLaughlin is a real singer, not a folk singer, and she does justice to these beautiful songs. I'd rather hear a classically trained singer sing folk songs than a folk singer sing anything.
a disappointment from Hyperion.......2001-06-21
I do not wish to be too harsh on this album...there is nothing glaringly wrong with it. My main quibble is with the title: "Songs of Scotland." These songs may well be "from" Scotland...but they are not "of Scotland."
The music on "Songs of Scotland" is great--as long as you are looking for very English, semi-operatic readings of these Scottish songs.
Mrs. McLaughlin (an opera singer) sings beautifully; but in the style she is most accustomed too. Mr. Martineau certainly knows his way around a piano and as with Mrs. McLaughlin's singing, I find no fault in his playing here.
My quibble, which may well be minor to some...was that I expected much more "Scottish" sounding renditions of these songs; in this regard, I was disappointed.
This disc is OK in and of itself...recommendable even...but consider yourself warned. Now you know what you'll be getting.

Customer Reviews:
Haprsinger.......2000-11-09
Experiences of beauty, such as enjoying this CD, seem to add meaning to our lives. Rolliana Scheckler plays and sings clearly, confidently and with much feeling. About half the CD she plays solo harp and the other half she unites her harp playing with her rich voice. Her own composition, "Newport", is especially touching. This CD evokes feelings of peace and beauty.
This one is a must for my collection!.......1999-05-14
As a listener to all sorts of world music, my collection would not be complete without this CD, my favorite in the areas of Celtic, Irish, and more, which span the years. I find Rolliana's folk harp music especially beautiful, and her attention to details of language and historical accuracy very admirable. But most of all, it is obvious to me that Rolliana is a true artist and musician, a passion which comes through with every note on this CD.
excellent artistry and music combination.......1999-05-08
Harpsinger is a wonderful collection of Celtic Music. I found it to be especially enchanting. It is unusual in that the singer uses her classically trained voice to sing accompanied by the harp. I have not heard any other recording like this one. Oftentimes when celtic harp music is joined with voice the voice is untrained and not up to the same level as the harp music. I am a trained singer myself and appreciate the nuances that Rolliana is able to give to her music because of her training in both voice and harp. The music is well chosen and all the songs compliment each other well. I highly recommend this cd, both for its musical beauty and for its artistry. Rolliana is to be commended for her work.

Buy it for the "Prince of Darkness".......2007-07-26
In my opinion, this is the best Ed Miller CD to date. The songs and stories are mostly from Lowland Scotland where he originates and you can hear his heart in every single word. "Lowlander" is pretty autobiographical with a lovely whistling opening that is Ed Miller's radio show trademark.
My favorite of the CD, "Prince of Darkness", was written by Battlefield Band's Brian McNeill. The song tells the story of a 13 year old boy from Cockenzie who went to work in the mines. The refrain is haunting:
I used to battle with the prince of darkness
I used to steal away his heart through a four foot seam
And when they asked if I was poor, I'd tell them `Aye sure."
But they never had to teach me how to dream
Of course, to every rule there's an exception. "Rivers and Reivers" contrasts rivers in Scotland with Texas.
Plus, there's a hilarious cover of Adam McNaughtan's "Cholesterol". If you love Scots humor, this song is one you need to hear and Miller does a grand job of it. Of course, there's also "At the Games" which takes you to the Highland Games.

Album Description
The first release from the new North Carolina-based Celtic trio Cucanandy, He Didn't Dance is a vibrant blend of tradition-based songs, tunes, and percussive dance rhythms from Ireland, Cape Breton, Brittany, and the American South.
Produced by Pete Sutherland, He Didn't Dance draws largely from Irish tradition, but in often-surprising combinations including foot rhythms and voice woven together on many cuts; the powerful sound of double flutes, in both unison and harmony; and carefully crafted arrangements supporting expressive vocals. The band also brings the journey of Irish and Scottish emigrants, many of whom settled in North Carolina, full-circle by exploring places where southern traditions betray Celtic stylings.
Customer Reviews:
If only I were a few years older..........2006-04-30
Stephanie is my cousin, and I remember when Cucanandy was getting started. I got to see them perform several times, but unfortunately I was very young and did not really appreciate the music at the time. However, I have recently begun listening to this album and have realized what a great experience on which I had been missing out. The three musicians are all exceptionally talented and create their own unique sound out of traditional influences. I listen to mostly metal, rock, jazz, and some hip-hop, but this is something different that I can thoroughly enjoy, with the family pride as an added bonus.
He Didn't Dance review.......2002-01-17
This is an excillent CD full of creative and exciting music. It is the best item in the whole world that you can get for...
AWESOME!.......2001-07-14
If you are an Irish Dancer or just a fan of Irish music this is the CD for you! Cucanandy has played live at my previous Irish Dancing School's Parties. This CD is so close that whenever I listen to it I feel like they're really playing live!
What a talented group!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-10-25
Cucanandy is the most delightful group I have come across in awhile. It is the perfect celtic band. Although based in North Carolina, I would rate them top's with any Irish Celtic band. Stephanie's voice, Mike's fingers and Malke's feet join up to take you back to a time of rich celtic and appalachian history.
This wonderful mix of styles creates an unforgetable sound!.......1999-10-21
Cucanandy mixes the traditions of Ireland, Scotland, and African-American slaves to create an incredible sound rich in the best which the three cultures offer. As a fourth grade teacher in North Carolina who is teaching a curriculum addressing North Carolina, I find this contemporarty group to be a great way to examine all the cultures which have played such an important role in the development of the modern music of North Carolina. They put on a wonderful live show, "Steps, Songs & Stories" which teaches children about the richness of the music. A long time fan of The Chieftans, this up and coming group offers an album which I find equivlent to that offered by the classic greats of Irish/Scottish music. Malke Rosenfield's command of the most eye-teasing dance steps adds a great rythemic undertone to Stephanie Johnston's strong vocals and instrumentation. Mike Casey then pulls the group together with his lilting flute. A great group and a great album. Take a chance on this new group, you will be pleasently surprised!
