These young Japanese musicians bill themselves as the return of chindon (chinoisified as "CHING DONG" on the cover), Japanese street music - not an ancient Japanese art form, but brass band music from the first half of the 20th century, in emulation of American band music. When you opened a new store, for example, you would hire a chindon band and have them play on the street, to draw customers.

So the liner notes say. I don't know how to describe this music; it's pretty unique. Very, very, happy; a bit like Dixieland but simpler. The melodies are so delightful and the playing so enthusiastic - it's a bit like jazz for people who don't like jazz. One of my favourite discs at the moment. A unique CD. If you like brass music, or if you WANT to like brass music ... it's a good idea to check these guys out.
