This collection marks the fifth live Matthews collection in eight years. But while previous surveys have chronicled the band's nascent ambitions (Remember Two Things), initial fame (Live at Red Rocks), solo pretensions (Live at Luther College) and PBS-ready charms (Listener Supported), this double-disc set, recorded at the final show of their '98 tour, seems bent on formally crowning Matthews and company as arena-filling superstars--warts and all. With a set listing culled largely from the pop-oriented Crash and more internationally experimental Before These Crowded Streets, the proceedings held some promise. But, like most arena bands before them, the DMB generally amps the nuances right out of the mix here. "The Last Stop" recalls where Led Zep's own world-music pretensions led them, while "Pantala Naga Pampa" skirts dangerously close to Kenny G. territory before finding its jazz-funk stride. Though they groove mightily and consistently throughout, the DMB's oft-criticized jam-band ethos often seems strangely burnished and studio-overdubbed to homogenous extremes here. And while legend Maceo Parker's sax further ignites the crowd-pleaser "What Would You Say," as guitarist and frequent Matthews collaborator Tim Reynolds plays guest guitar god throughout, it's Matthews's own shamanic, oft-trancelike vocal excursions that barely keep this one from lapsing into DMB's McLive album. Try Budokan next time? --Jerry McCulley

Not their best, but still a great live album.......2007-04-12
Though this isn't as good a performance as say "The Gorge" or "Central Park", it still is a great one to have in your library. It is a great set and is well performed. The solo work done by Moore and Tinsley is fantastic as is the tight backings by Beauford and Lessard. Dave sings and plays great as usual. Though whenever I listen back to these older concerts, I do start to miss the great addition of Butch Taylor on keys, he certainly adds a nice new dimension and texture to the sound of the band. Still a great performance though, get it!
Brillant live album, DMB at their height........2006-11-24
I just wish they could recapture this energy, get back with Lillywhite, and quit making elevator music.

Best live album..... maybe.......2005-09-08
Last Stop is really good on this album, great energy. Don't drink the water is great, but I still think that Folsom Field has the best version of it (Folsom Field also has the best version of All Along the Watchtower - the ending is absolutly stunning, you've gotta hear it!) The song that stands out is #41. This song is my favorite upbeat DMB song, it's so smooth, and Victor Wooten guest stars and rips some phat solos on the bass. If you play bass, buy this album! This version of #41 far surpases all other version, just read the reviews. It's hot! Chrah is great, too. It's one of the better versions. Tim Reynolds play on most, if not all of the cd. So, if you play electric guitar, buy this album. It's hot!
All Along the Watchtower is a very good version, one of the best, and Too Much has so much energy. This is also the only cd where you can find the Maker.
Conclusion: This cd highlights the first 3 releases. It has less of a pop sound and more of a jazzy, bluesy, and rock sound.
If you want a cd that has a great collection of songs that include the more poppy stuff (digging a ditch, space between, big eyed fish, when the world ends, I did it, if I had it all) as well as some of the most energetic upbeat stuff (Don't Drink, Warehous, AATW, etc.) - buy the Folsom Field cd (one of the best -maybe better the Chicago, it has more catchy songs, but the good songs of Chicago outshine most every other album).
If you want the most expansive collection minus two staples (#41 and Crash) get the Central Park Concert. 20 songs, hours of music, possibly the best version of Don't Drink the Water, and the only cd with Cortez the Killer, a bluesy song that is one of the best guitar solo songs of all time (wicked 11 minute song that does't get old - Warren Haynes stars as one of the best blues guitarists of all time). This cd is in my opinion the best place for a newcomer to start, and an essential album for anyone that considers themselves even a casual fan.

Splendid Brahms Symphony Cycle from Haitink, London Symphony Orchestra.......2006-05-12
Highlights include Haitink's spellbinding interpretations of the four Brahms symphonies and a brilliant performance by concertmaster Gordan Nikolitch and principal cellist Timothy Hugh of the Brahms Double Concerto. The London Symphony Orchestra's performances are absolutely impeccable, rivalling those from preeminent Dutch, German and Austrian orchestras.
Haitink offers a compelling interpretation of Brahms' 1st Symphony with the London Symphony Orchestra in excellent form, which ranks as among the best performed and recorded I have heard. His latest interpretation is one which seems a bit less restrained than his earlier versions, but still replete with strict adherence to Brahms' tempi. His latest interpretation is, in some respects, more exciting than his earlier Philips recordings, emphasizing the rich sonorities and complex architecture of Brahms' score.
Without question Haitink's LSO Live recording is the best live recording of the Brahms 2nd Symphony I have heard, easily eclipsing Kurt Masur's acclaimed account with the New York Philharmonic recorded nearly a decade ago by Teldec. It is also Haitink's finest recording of this work, which he has recorded previously with both the Royal Concertgebouw and Boston Symphony orchestras. Haitink does a wonderful job emphasizing the textural richness of Brahms' score, while keeping the orchestra playing well at a very brisk tempo. However, the real treasure on this recording is the excellent performance of the Double Concerto by the London Symphony's Concertmaster and Principal Cellist which opens this CD. Theirs is a vibrant, rhapsodic performance which compares quite well - indeed I think may be better - than the recent Deutsche Grammophon recording featuring violinist Gil Shaham with Claudio Abbado conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. Once again the orchestra plays with much intensity and warmth, led ably by Haitink.
Bernard Haitink's LSO Live CD of the Brahms Serenade Number 2 and the 3rd Symphony, is recorded from concerts he conducted in 2002 (serenade) and 2003 (symphony). Brahms' Serenade Number 2 could be regarded as an early precursor to his symphonies, since it is a five-movement work. Haitink leads the London Symphony Orchestra in yet another excellent performance, noted for warm, rhapsodic playing from the string section. However, the best performance on this CD is that of Brahms' Third Symphony. This piece itself is a bit unusual for a 19th Century symphony, in the form of Allegro Andante Poco Allegretto Allegro. In its overall tone, the work itself is a bit "darker" than the Second Symphony, which many have regarded as Brahms' "Pastoral" symphony. Haitink excels in emphasizing the more melancholy aspects of the work, leading the London Symphony Orchestra in the best-conducted and recorded version of this symphony that I've heard so far, with the possible exception of Harnoncourt's Teldec recording with him conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. Haitink's latest recording seems a bit darker than Masur's New York Philharmonic Orchestra recording from Teldec, and perhaps, Harnoncourt's as well.
Haitink has conducted the London Symphony in an unusually warm, vibrant performance of the Brahms 4th Symphony, which is replete with excellent solo performances from the french horns, woodwinds and strings. I was especially pleased with Haitink's dignified, but still brooding, interpretation of the 4th movement, which comes across as a musical interlude between darkness and light. I personally regard this recording of the Brahms 4th symphony as the best currently available, in a crowded pack that includes distinguished recordings from the likes of Claudio Abbado, Herbert Blomstedt, Carlos Kleiber, Kurt Masur, and Kurt Sanderling.
Fans of Haitink's critically acclaimed 1970s Brahms symphony cycle may miss the ambient warmth of the Concertgebouw's main concert hall in this Brahms symphony cycle, but I will contend that these new recordings sound more vivid than the earlier Philips recordings. LSO Live is currently releasing Haitink's second Beethoven symphony cycle from live performances he conducted last year; I am eagerly awaiting these, suspecting that they will be regarded as among the finest Beethoven symphony recordings issued in the last few years. Later this year he will be visiting New York City, leading the London Symphony Orchestra in a Beethoven symphony cycle at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall. Not only do I look forward to this visit, but also to Haitink's future performances at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium as Principal Conductor of the venerable Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Runaway Jams.......2003-05-02
Nobody has mentioned the Runaway Jim so far so I had to comment. It's the only version available so far in the Live Phish series. I am partial to this song perhaps because it was the first Phish song I ever heard (live and in person only 10 ft away from the band in a small college town bar in Minnesota back in '91). I had no idea who Phish were when my friend persuaded me to go see them but they came on and started with Runaway Jim and I've been a huge fan ever since even if I haven't made it to that many concerts or followed every development over the years (it's hard to when you're living abroad). But beyond my personal connection with the song, I think it's objectively a great song/jam. Why is it not more regularly featured? The version on this CD is a little down tempo than the original version I heard in '91 but it's still has great solos and a nice groove.

Many doubted that Judas Priest would find a vocalist to capably fill the shoes of legendary frontman Rob Halford. With Ripper Owens, the band found not only a Priest fanatic, but a talented screamer in his own right. Proving that his studio performance on Jugulator was no hoax, Owens displays performing talents on this vigorous double-live album. For concert album cynics, heed this: half of these 23 tunes have not been performed on the two previous Priest live discs, and Owens really belts out those screams with greater accuracy than Halford was able to summon in his last few years in the band. The metal legends unleash the long-lost pre-speed-metal classic "Rapid Fire"; they play an inspired acoustic version of "Diamonds & Rust" that's closer to Joan Baez's original than Priest's 1977 cover; and they dig up two previously unperformed Jugulator songs. Most of what's heard here rates from very good to excellent, though one wishes that "Burn in Hell" wasn't abbreviated and that "Dreamer Deceiver" wasn't excluded; and a few of the mixes could be cleaner. Still, this very live-sounding record (complete with essential raucous audience participation) captures the potent force of a Judas Priest concert performance. --Bryan ReesmanCustomer Reviews:

Ween is often dismissed as a novelty band, but those who stoop to such judgments should check out this shaggy document of Gene and Dean bringing it to the people. Paintin' the Town Brown captures the brothers Ween in their early days playing to DAT accompaniment through their full band stints. The strongest cuts on this release come from their 1996 country tour; backed by a crackerjack band of Nashville studio legends, Ween saddles traditional honky-tonk with politically incorrect lyrics and the whole package seems to make a lot of sense. Longtime fans will be thrilled at the inclusion of obscure Ween cuts like "Mountain Dew," "Vallejo," and "Ode to Rene." Casual fans will have a hard time with disc two, a spotlight on Ween's overindulgent Boredoms-like jams. Still, it's hard not to admire a band that tackles French cabaret music, Middle Eastern drones, funk, punk, and demented children's music. --Jason JosephesCustomer Reviews:

Psalms of David Complete
Choir of St Paul's Cathedral , and Scott Manufacturer: Hyperion UK ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD Similar Items:
ASIN: B00006GO6J Release Date: 2002-10-08 |
Amazon.com
This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context. The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11
We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.
Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.
A- for effort.......2006-02-23
The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.
What can you say?.......2003-01-03
How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.
One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.
So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.
Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.

Front 242 find themselves in a unique position regarding live performances. Since they are one of the founders of a past-its-prime genre, they must make a choice: provide their audience with a history lesson by performing their songs in their original studio format or revamp their otherwise dated material? With :Re:Boot: Live '98, the band decided on the latter, and the results are phenomenal. :Re:Boot is an "alive" live album. The vocal production is outstanding. Many of the sampled vocal tracks are performed live, creating an intensely engaging human energy. They change the lyrics for several of the songs, lending an ad-libbed feel--a pretty tough feat in electronic music. The song choices span across most of Front 242's career up to the release of this album. The club hits "Headhunter," "First in, First Out," and "Welcome to Paradise" are here. The only flaw is that "Tragedy for You" and "Rhythm of Time," both from 1991's Tyranny for You, are absent. It would have been interesting to hear these songs with a fresh buff and polish. Otherwise, this album deserves a heavy-gauge bravo. --Beth BessmerCustomer Reviews:

What this cd does not present is the intense energy that 242 drives on-stage. Everyone likes to see their favorite band perform live, but a 242 performance is like a bomb exploding. I have NEVER seen a band enjoy the live aspect as much as these guys do.
This live cd is a great example of 242's concert sound, but until you WITNESS them live, you'll never understand why Front 242 is in a class of their own.
Live album captures the energy of the band.......2004-01-18
As live CD's go, the sound quality is excellent. It features all their most known songs, 'Headhunter' is excellent as usual! Many songs are given dramatic makeovers.
What is most evident is the more dance-orientated feel of their live shows than of their stuido albums. They know how to work a crowd and throughout this show Jean Luc De Meyer and, in particular Richard JK, are constantly encouraging the crowd and talking to them. It's nice to see such a strong band-crowd interaction.
Even if you don't usually like live albums, I'd give this one a go. But don't be expecting a sing-along type show. With their emphasis on dance in their live shows, this one is for the danceloor rather than for the mind!
THE ABSOLUTE PINNACLE OF THEIR SOUND!!!!.......2001-11-30
And about the vocals. For gods sake, they're Belgian! Of course they're going to sound a little dorky in English! Jean-Luc Demeyer, in my opinion, is an excellent wordsmith, but this is music with slogans. SEX IS GOOD! It also brings to the live phenomina the power of 242. Jean-Luc is the steadying force, whilst Richard is the live wire- absolutley fabulous call and reply vocals that whips up a storm!! Richards dub-style vocals are only complementing the incredibly simple arrangements, and thus making a sound that has more than its share of parts. 242 sound very raw, which gives the overall aggressiveness of this disc a notch ahead of anything else I have heard in this genre. This is mosh-pit music, it's hard dance music, it is motivating music.
My favs. include First In/First out (the juxtaposition at the end is to die for), Welcome to Paradise, Body to Body, Happiness, Punish Your Machine, Im Rhythmus Bleiben, and No Shuffle. Weak links: Soul Manager...
Summary: if you want to hear an awesome band at the very peak of its powers, or the best of the (sickningly weak) ebm scene, pick this jewel up. Get yourself a dark room, blast it and go nuts!
not awful, not awesome: renovation is not always for better.......2001-09-28
When I listened to it, I still recognised the wonderful 242 sound among the renewed techno sounds. The songs are wonderful, so they should have to make it real bad not to deserve a listening. Some versions are very good, such as 'Moldavia' or 'Headhunter', even though there're others, such as 'No Shuffle' and 'Body to Body' which are really sacrilegeous.
I hope their new album, expected for 2002, will be better than this. I know -and I like- that bands are always in constant evolution, but that doesn't necessarily imply that this evolution is good. i don't like techno, so I'd prefer some other evolution. But Front 242 will always rule (together with Skinny Puppy)
Sorry, but this isn't the F242 I used to know.......2000-06-02
OK. It is not a bad album. It works quite well as mediocre techno-something. But it is not the real spirit of F242. Get the old masterpieces "Front by Front" and "Tyranny for You" instead. That's the true EBM.
