World-class Jazz Compositions & Traditional Macedonian Folk.......2004-04-25
The traditional Macedonian folk tunes and melodies, "Brusnichko Oro", "Nevenino Oro, "Bukovsko svadbarski oro", and "Talevo kasapsko oro" are my favorites because the minor scale and unusual rhythms allow for highly fluid and lyrical melodic interpretation. Tale Ognenovski is a master of interpretative clarinet sounds and inventor of exotic musical phrases. Great examples are, Tracks 1, 2 and 3 "Tale Ognenonvski Jazz Compositions No. 1, No. 5, & No. 8", all of which combine Macedonian music with Benny Goodman type jazz improvisational techniques. The labyrinthine musical phrases that flow from the the undisputed "King of Macedonian Clarinet" are magnificent, extravagant. He explores sound and music with twists and curves that leave the listener breathless. It is world-class music at its finest. He can play fast, exciting, speeding clarinet music or music that is spiritual meditative and soulful. Overall, this CD demonstrates that the mysterious music from the Balkans belongs on the world-stage ... for everyone to hear and enjoy. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

With All Due Respect.......2003-07-03
Whereas I can certainly recognize the talents of Tale Ognenovski as a fine clarinet and reed pipe player, try as I may, I just do not like this recording as a whole. Even with the slight variations of tone over the course of this CD, the performance is quite draining and oh so dissonant in spots. To gain another perspective, I even played this for my family upon a recent visit. Somewhere during the third song both my mother and sister almost simultaneously requested for this to be removed. At least my six month old nephew did not cry due to these dissonant tones as if he had, I would have given this my infamous one star rating.
Seriously, there is little to remember melody wise throughout this recording. The first, sixth, and seventh pieces are probably the best. And again, I recognize Tale's little inflections as the signs of a talented man. However there is only so much dissonance that I can take. And the pounding drum beat throughout the recording badly needs a change of pace. Someone get me a Tylenol fast.
An E for Effort but a two star rating is the best I can do.

Undisputed King of the Macedonian Clarinet.......2003-06-13
Tracks 1, 2 & 3 are called "Tale Ognenovski Jazz Compositions No. 1, No. 5 & No. 8." The first reminds me of American jazz, such as played by Bennie Goodman & his band in the 1940s. Gradually, in a very fluid fashion, the music changes to Macedonian tunes and melodies. No. 5 & No. 8 have exotic musical phrases that only a master musician can create on a Balkan clarinet. My favorite tunes are the folk dances which demonstrate his innovative skills using the minor musical scale, unique rhythms and melodies that predominate in the Balkans. The titles of the tunes, "Brusnichko Oro", "Nevenino Oro", "Bukovsko svadbarski oro", "Talevo kasaspsko oro" ... sound as mysterious and enticing as the music itself. Spine-tingling sensations arise as one listens to the spiralling musical notes played with so much passion and talent. Track # 8 "Stevchevo Oro" is a unique blend of sounds created by the reed pipes, small bagpipe, and zourla which alternate on different musical paths. The reed pipes are like a chorus which respond to the independent voices of the bagpipe and zourla. Track # 10, "Tale Ognenvovski Concert for Clarinet No. 1", is an amazing musical labyrinth, an extravaganza of magnificent proportions and dimensions. Although it lasts about 29 minutes, there is nothing boring or repetitive within the entire musical fete. It is a meditative exploration on the clarinet of a new musical form, a fusion of modern Westernized jazz improvisations with ancient Balkan rhythms and melodies. At times, there are rapid twists and curves, like a car racing in competition and other times, there are very spiritual and meditative passages, as heard within a Zen Buddhist temple. Anyone who loves clarinet music and the Balkan sound will also love this CD. Erika Borsos (erikab93)
