Book Description

"Kirtan is the calling, the crying, the reaching across infinite space—and digging into the heart's deepest well—to touch and be touched by the Divine Presence," teaches world music pioneer Jai Uttal. On Kirtan! The Art and Practice of Ecstatic Chant, Jai guides listeners through the practice of Kirtan—singing the many names of God and Goddess—an essential part of Bhakti yoga, or the yoga of devotion. This sacred music form is for all people; there are no experts, nor beginners, and the practice itself is the teacher, guiding us to ourselves. Listeners join Jai Uttal to explore: the power of ancient Sanskrit syllables in chant to invoke the Divine, how to open the voice and learn to love the sound that comes from our bodies, more than two hours of music recorded by Jai Uttal to commune with the Divine through sacred chant, and the path of Bhakti and Kirtan, the journey of surrender, and much more.

5 out of 5 stars "A Joyful Noise".......2007-05-16

When I heard an interview on NPR with this artist,Jai Uttal, and music from his CD I couldn't get it out of my mind. It is "a joyful noise" that lifts the spirit and energizes. His very personal explanation of Kirtan on Track 2 gives one an understanding of the spiritual basis of the music and even if it is not a path that you might follow you can't help but be swept up in the chanting. I play it in the car on days when I feel stressed and it removes all that chatter in my head and helps me arrive at my destination uplifted and in the present. His interpretation of the ancient chants using non traditional instruments and renditions is appealing and engaging. P.S.It is a 2 disc set so you can have one at home and one in the car!

3 out of 5 stars Not As Ecstatic As I Like To Be.......2007-04-22

Although a double CD set, both disks pose a problem to this reviewer's taste. Each contains a rather lengthy exposition by the artist on the nature of Bhakti (Devotional) Yoga sandwiched in the program. Jai Uttal has a very pleasant speaking voice & the material was helpful, even inspiring--but do you really want to hear it all over again everytime you play either discs? I know I don't. The musical material is engaging, but not particularly special. It is authentic mantra, but without the technical brilliance of many such CDs (see links below). I don't regret buying it--again, BUT it won't become a treasured favorite. I don't think it would turn-on people who weren't mantra fanatics like me or a real fan of the artist--or a devotee of Kirtan.

PS. The cover artwork is great!

5 out of 5 stars Devotional music at its sweetest.......2007-03-15

This 2-CD set is one of the best introductions to contemporary kirtan I've come across (and I own many kirtan CDs). Aside from the wonderful spoken section, where Jai Uttal chats informally about what kirtan is, the selection of songs is truly heartwarming. I love both CDs, but find I listen over and over again particularly to the second one for its variety of moods and styles. Jai's voice really cuts deep and brings out the intensity and authenticity of his own devotion to the path of music and the heart.

In addition, the musicianship of everyone featured on this set is superb and adds so much to the listening experience. It is hard not to sing along and feel the blessings flow, even if you are not a singer...and that is exactly the point.

5 out of 5 stars Kirtan: The Art and Practice of Ecstatic Chant by jai Uttal.......2007-03-09

Wonderful kirtan, by a great artist.

5 out of 5 stars How can I express my joy?.......2007-03-06

I was a big fan of Krishna Das and I still am. A couple of weeks ago, for the first time in my life, I heard Jai Uttal's 'Radha Rani ki Jai, Maha Rani ki Jai' - Track # 4 on Disc 2. Like all good music does to my soul, I was so enchanted that I played the same track again and again till I lost count. I wasted no time in getting both the discs and my favorites are as follows:
Disc 1: Track # 3 'Radha Govinda'
Disc 2: Track # 1 'Durga Pahimam', Track # 3 'Jaya Radha', Track # 4 'Radha Rani'
Originally coming from India and being a big proponent of 'Bhakthi Yoga' (Path of devotion and Divine love for God), I can say from the depths of my heart that Jai Uttal sings with such soulful melody and love, it takes my breath away every single time I listen to the tracks mentioned above. It surprises me so much that while I cannot listen to certain types of music even once leave alone repeating my listening experience, the kind of music that Jai Uttal, Krishna Das and others produce, I can listen for a lifetime and experience that joy again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Hawaii Set to Music.......2007-02-27

This album was supplied in the room of my hotel, and was playing when my wife and I would return from a day of fun in Hawaii. It was such a good album that I bought it before I came home. Now if I want to enjoy my memories of Hawaii, I just turn this album on and close my eyes. Great guitar!

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful music, could be anywhere..........2007-01-05

Wanted to have some Hawaiian music when we returned from our visit, and this sounded like what I wanted. It is, indeed, beautiful music, just not the "island sound" I was looking for. Still provides a soothing, laid back ambiance.

5 out of 5 stars Umph's=Greatness.......2006-12-02

Tyler, clearly you don't much about good musicianship. This band, especially the guitarists are the some of the best musicians around today. Umphrey's is not trying to be anybody, that is the most inaccurate statement i've heard in awile. In fact it's the opposite, they blend soo many different styles and genres, from blues to jazz to reggae to rock, that you cannot put a finger on their music. They can play anything and they are the tightest band around right now. Go see them live and you will be amazed and don't listen to "tyler"

2 out of 5 stars Unimpressive.......2006-03-11

I saw Umphrey's McGee at the Chicago theatre and have to say I was a little disappointed. I hadn't heard their music before but had heard good reviews. Unfortunately, I can't say I was overly impressed. Here are my impressions - their music is just O.K. and the vocals (what little they have) are horrendous - off key and painful to listen to. During the show I couldn't help but get the impression that Umphrey's was trying to follow in the footsteps of the dead and phish - the music and attitude is undeniably "phishesque". Perhaps Umphrey's is trying to cash in on the void left by their absence, but truth is Umphrey's just isn't at the same level. The extraordinary musical talent found in Phish and the Dead is noticeably missing in Umphrey's. All that is left is a somewhat impressive light show and a theatre saturated with patchouli oil and herb. This is probably why the vast majority of their crowd consisted of high schoolers. Eager to be there for the "experience" and atmosphere, they simply didn't care that the music was sub-par or just didn't know any better.

4 out of 5 stars better once youve heard it live.......2006-01-06

but there are so many tracks that are so much better live. dont get me wrong, i love this cd, but it dosent compare to live versions of most of the songs. all of the songs are great, but when played live, even when they arent jammed on are just better than whats on the cd. for instance, uncle wally on this cds okay but not as good as it is live and when its played electric.

all in all a great album. nothing too fancy and white mans moccosins are still some of my favorite um songs even with all their new stuff out

5 out of 5 stars Keepin in Real.......2005-12-17

Sexy album. I have seen Umphreys a number of times, and have quite a bit of their music, and this is my go to when I want some Umphreys. I like it better than Anchor Drops (which is also great), because it feels a little more open and free, AD can get dense and heavy at times (which is good, because it doesn't just sound like more of the same).

I like the use of acoustics as lead guitars in Uncle Wally and Water. Andy's Last Beer is a song anyone will like. Ringo, Roulette and Hurt Bird Bath are very very sexy, but my favorite song (which I have yet to hear live) is 2nd Self, mainly because of the last minute of so, which is a nice little guitar jam...BUT IT, LISTEN TO IT!

(and read the liner notes, they're fun)

5 out of 5 stars Not your average white band.......2005-07-29

"Local Band Does O.K." is far superior than "Anchor Drops" in my view. If you liked AD, you'll want LBDOK.

Some have compared UM to Phish, but I don't hear it. These guys ain't about one guy as much as Phish.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely Music to Code By.......2007-07-17

I've always felt like, the best music is the kind that truly moves me without saying a single word. Music that gets me toe-tapping and head-nodding almost reflexively. Lifegiving is one such album.

The entire album sounds like it tells a story. One of my favorite tracks is the upbeat "Fire Tamer", which totally sounds like a slightly futuristic new-agey James Bond movie theme song, LOL!

My other favorite track is the breathtaking "Between the Sun and the Moon"... The woodwinds (or violin) in it are just marvelous. As a software developer I don't want to be distracted by words, or too much chanting... just give me some smooth crystal melodies to complement my "Flow" (all you other software developers know what I am talking about). Lifegiving is really music by which you can code and get work done.

Now for the not-so-great (my reasons for giving it 4 stars instead of 5). After several days of listening, I found that too many of the tracks used the same set of instruments at same timbre and pitch. A little overuse of the piano. There weren't (to me) enough "exotic" instruments. And also, there weren't enough tracks that made me go "wow".

Ok I'll tell the truth: I rarely give 5 stars :) This is simply a great album and would make a good addition to any New Age collection. I especially recommend it to people who are still new to the genre.

5 out of 5 stars A New Wave of New Age.......2007-06-09

The hauntingly beautiful music of Australis caught my ear over and over on the various outlets. So, I purchased the CD and found a great new array of what seems to be a New Wave of New Age music. Similar to Amethystium or perhaps Ryan Farish but holding their own. I really enjoy this CD alot and would recommend it to all who are currently turned on by this fascinating new wave of new age. P.S. This is great driving or traveling music!

5 out of 5 stars Jackpot!.......2007-02-23

I received an e-mail one day featuring Australis' latest CD. I have never heard of the artist; therefore, I decided to listen to it on Amazon. Much to my suprise, and after listening to 5 songs, I was convinced that Australis has alot to offer. The music is very relaxing, and very charistmatic.

5 out of 5 stars The magnificent debut of 'Australis'.......2006-02-04

I am a big fan of New Age music and the genre in a big way and I am always looking to listen to new artists from this genre. I came across 'Australis' in a music search and decided to take a punt and purchased this album. I didn't know what to expect so having listened to this album 3 times already. I can say I am pleasantly surprised. This album was released midway through 2005 and the album is New Age with a ambient feel to it. Another great thing about this album is the artwork that shows the care and feeling that went into the production of this beautiful set of work. The front cover is of a butterfly on sanded back paper. The insides of the album on the left hand side is a Mayan symbol (mayan calender).

The music is performed and composed by a lone artist who goes by the name 'Australis'. There are 10 tracks to this album and everyone of the songs is well worth the listen. New Age fans will fall in love with the sensuous and ambient rhythms of this album and each song is a enigma unto itself. The first song is the album namesake 'Lifegiving' - that sets the tone and style of the rest of the album release. The best 2 songs of the album are 'Turning Point' that opens with a bravado of piano skill and 'The Sound of Hope' which brings together a soothing and hopeful sound with flutes, synths and keyboards.

But as I have said, all the songs are well worth a listen and the final song 'Sacred Earth' is a fine ending to what I hope to be Australis' first of several albums. This artist has the brilliant touches of Enigma's Michael Cretu and the flair of Era's Eric Levi. I look forward to more musical masterpieces from 'Australis'.

5 out of 5 stars A genius in New Age Music.......2005-07-16

The first time I heard the song "Between the sun and the moon" I fell in love with it. Australis is a genius in new age music. All of his songs are great to listen to. The songs seem to have a very different yet extremely good beat and melody. You can almost feel your head nodding! I thank God I stumbled upon this album where its so rare to find excellent new age music knowing how easy it is to be carried when people listen exclusively to the most popular new age musicians and discard the rest. You should NOT discard this, its the BEST.

5 out of 5 stars Do Your Self a Favor.......2006-07-18

Imagine yourself in the car with your screaming kids -- it's a long drive -- and suddenly you pop in a CD that grabs everyone's attention...dad behind the wheel says "Whoa -- what's this?"
Meanwhile, the kids in the back seat stop harrassing each other as the soulful voice and choruses of Rebecca Frezza and her band command everyone's attention. Simply put, this album rocks -- this is Pearl Jam meets Crowded House meets Lisa Loeb for kids. Forget the Wiggles and Laurie Berkner, you and your kids will find yourself playing this CD again and again. Frezza finds and defines an underserved market -- kids too old for corny sounding blah blah nursery ryhme sounding retreads and comes up with something rocky, poppy and fun. The songs are tight, smart and fun. Her band rocks! This is a total mood changer!! There's no shame here when parents find an excuse to play this album again. We first heard about Rebecca on XM Satellite and we are now the happy owners of both Road Trip and Music in My Heart. We then caught her on Jack's Big Music House on Noggin. And now there's her new CD, Tall and Small, which we picked up at a local gig here in New Jersey. Frezza is the next "Big Thing" in kids rock -- she is an undiscovered talent that is worth getting to know now.

Great CD. Kid's music that deserves a Grammy. My kids love it and I love playing it for them. Great sound and lyrics for children and parents of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars A Road Trip well worth taking.......2003-11-24

On her latest CD, "Road Trip," Rebecca Frezza and her band, Big Truck, continue to accomplish their goal of creating children's music that adults can also enjoy. From a musical center of acoustic rock her style is colored by jazz ("B3"), gospel ("Rock My Baby"), soul ("Dance With Me") folk and country. I heard the influences of a variety of artists from the B52s, to the Doobie Brothers to Earth Wind and Fire to name just a few. Frezza's voice is clear, strong and expressive and she makes great use of harmonies from her talented back up singers throughout the CD. She wisely broadens her authors' pallet by sharing the writing credits with guitarist Elisa Verano and producer Chris Putnam. Among my favorite tracks are the rocking "Babysitter," the silly "Space Dog" and the sweet and pretty "Movie In My Pillow." The instrumentation on this CD strikes just the right balance of adding interesting touches here and there (saxophone, strings, and very sparingly, kids chorus) without ever getting in the way of keeping the songs front and center.
This is one to add to your shopping cart. The high quality and diversity will keep the parents interested and the fun songs will keep the kids asking to play it again.

5 out of 5 stars Even my kid likes this!.......2005-11-07

This is an amazing collection of songs, all performed with such skill that even my 8-year-old son likes this CD. Brahms and Beatles, Mozart and Ellington, there is something here for everyone. And thank you, thank you, thank you for "Bassoonist's Holiday."

5 out of 5 stars Bassoon Me!.......2004-08-09

I delight in the bassoon! What a unique and great sound, throaty and thrillingly coarse, yet soaring to sound at times like sax, like oboe, like cello, like a bunch of bassoonatics!

This is delightful collection of musical styles played by this innovative and talented quartet. Choosing to select pieces that are not typically of the bassoon repertoire, we go from Waltz to Gershwin to Broadway to Motzart to Lennon/McCartnye to Sibelius to most of us unknowns such as Mitchell Clarke to Duke Ellington.

All played with passion and gusto and excellent tonality, phrasing and tempo.

Bassoon Me again!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Bassoonastics.......2003-09-27

This would have to be the best bassoon ensemble cd on the market. The arrangements are stylish and clever, and the performances brilliant! Fraser Jackson must be the most accomplished contrabassoonist I have ever head. This cd is a must for any bassoonists collection be you amateur or proffessional.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING QUARTET.......2002-04-14

This disc is really superb!!! Not only is the playing at an extremely high level by the group, the arrangements are also outstanding. The Brahms is abolutely beautiful. The group goes from lightning fingers bravura to sweet soulful singing. It is a joy to listen to again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Simply fantastic!.......2001-10-26

I simply love the Caliban Quartet! They breath new life into bassoons! The way they bring out the music is simply magical. Not only do they sound good, their technical abilities are simply amazing!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Kim Criswell Does Not Sing.......2007-05-19

This set is great for what it really is. One description says that there are dozens of vocals by Kim Criswell. She narrates an excellent history of the musical through the years BUT she sings ONE song. This is misleading to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing!.......2003-01-09

The greatest thing to come out since the Musical itself, Wonderful, educational, fantastic reproductions of the 19th century musicals!

5 out of 5 stars The great song composers and lyricists are presented.......2002-01-06

Richard Fawkes' The History Of The Musical is a flawlessly recorded, 4 cassette, unabridged audiobook showcasing the development of the musical, from its origins in European light opera and operetta to its it's golden age in the American theater. The great song composers and lyricists are presented including Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, Lloyd Webber, and Sondheim. The wonderfully narrated text by the award-winning Broadway singer Kim Criswell is enhanced with almost one hundred famous musical extracts. The History Of The Musical is a "must" for personal, academic, and community library music history and audiobook collections.

5 out of 5 stars Should be twice as long.......2001-12-15

Surely there must be a medal somewhere out there for Naxos records and for author Richard Fawkes. After two superb sets of tapes and CDs titled "The History of Classical Music" and "The History of Opera," there is now available Mr. Fawkes' "The History of the Musical" (NA422712). Here we have singer/actress Kim Criswell narrating on 4 CDs or tapes just under 320 minutes of exactly what the title promises.

Starting with "The Beggar's Opera" of 1728, the history of the genre is traced up to the time of writing, meaning "Les Miserables." Along the way, we consider operetta, the English Music Hall, American vaudeville, the review, the book show, the familiar, the off-beat, the dead ends, the highly influential. And the London stage gets a good deal of attention also, thereby introducing a lot of material not very well known to those better versed in the American musical.

As with any good effort of this sort, a strong connection is drawn between the changing times and the changing concepts of what a musical should be. The importance of "Show Boat" is not glossed over, for example, nor is the other shock caused by "Pal Joey." The reliance of Lloyd Webber on staging is mentioned but not his lack of more than one fairly memorable melody per show. In general, the tone is upbeat and positive.

But this is a recording. While it could never include all the information found in a book, its dozens of recorded examples are what makes this set priceless. Where possible, the oldest "original cast" recordings are used. On the other hand, there are some strange exceptions such as "Hey there" from "Pajama Game" being sung not by John Raitt but by Ron Raines on the Jay recording. I suspect this is because Criswell is in the cast of that set.

Again, this set is in tape and CD formats. For educational purposes, the CDs offer direct access to any show under discussion--and the CDs are very generously divided into nearly 200 tracks! Very considerate of the producers. The booklet offers a nice little personal essay by Criswell. So if I have any complaint about this set, it is that I wish it were twice as long.

Album Description

Produced in their own live studio, this is the first studio album released by Die Warzau since 1995's critically acclaimed ENGINE mixed styles and genres and cemented their reputation as electronic innovators to be imitated. At the same time both the most infectious and catchy record recorded by the seminal Chicago Industrial anti-pop band, CONVENIENCE is raw, noisy and aggressive. Christie's Production has never sounded more complex and listenable while Marcus' vocal range has grown to include a depth that has not been found on an industrial recording to date. The inclusion of Abel Garibaldi and Dan Evans into the core group has built a more powerful recording presence, demonstrated readily by CONVENIENCE's easy stylistic and technical maneuvers. While lyrically, the record is self-assured and fascinating from beginning to end, the party recording atmosphere of ENGINE has been met and bested. It's been nearly ten years and the wait has been well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Musical masterpiece.......2006-07-28

this is by far the best album that has come out over the last 2 years. i bought it when it was released and all i can say is i have been listening to it nonstop. it is a great blend of musical styles and jim marcus has to have one of the better voices out there. i would recomend this album to everyone, and can't wait for the next album that is released by Die Warzau.

5 out of 5 stars Simply a great listen! .......2006-02-17

Deconstructionists will always find fault. Thus, it is not surprising that some people apparently only listened to the album for technical content and missed out on the subtleties of the whole. Of course, you'll also find crackpots that read too much into the album as well. The bottom line is that this album manages to sound, dare I say, like a pop album. However, if all pop music were this good, then I might consider "converting". Rather than being a disjoint juxtaposition of different sounds and styles, I actually think that the album has a great vibe and that it has more continuity and unity than most have given it credit for having. The album has moments where its biting, creepy, pretty, and mellow. The album probably won't be eclectic enough for puppy lovers and will probably be too pretty for most industrialites. All I know is that Die Warzau is still makes some of the most "organic" highly produced music out there. The maturity of Convenience seems to reflect that of its creators. While some music dwells on the blacks and whites ... Convenience not only includes the grays - it embraces the full sprectrum of colors.

3 out of 5 stars Skinny Puppy meets Annie?.......2006-01-02

I liked this album alot the first time I listened to it. Some songs, such as Bliss (is that Chris Connelly doing a grunge voice?) or King of Rock and Roll, keep the album going at a quick pace. Unfortunately, there are some really bad ballads that just sound worse with every listen. Kleen especially annoys with its use of vocoders.

There are nice little voice samples that fade in and out of the speakers, but Skinny Puppy did this type of thing much better 20 years ago. Even the industrial "trebley" drum production sounds dated.

Not a terrible album. But not a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars excellent album........2004-10-19

I've listened to this cd a few times, after receiving it in the mail yesterday, and it's been growing on me. Firstly, this album is not really industrial, although it has a few industrial sounding songs on it. You cannot really categorize this, other than saying it's "electronic".

A few of the songs reminded me of Depeche Mode a little bit, because of the vocal delivery and electronics.

What we have here is electronic/alternative that goes more experimental, or more towards straight up, listenable pop at times. That's what makes the band interesting. Not to mention, the vocals are top notch, as are the beats. If you liked "Engine," you'll like this one too. This album is less noisy than Engine and a little cleaner, but by no means too "polished." It's not quite industrial, but if you're familiar with that genre, Die Warzau, or a fan of electronic music, you'll probably like this one.

I'm still not sure how I feel about the very delicate, soft songs juxtaposed with the slightly heavier electronic stuff. Most of the songs are solid, but the flow of the album isn't perfect.

This album gets 5 stars, however, because there is just this amazing amount of complexity and mystery to it. The vocals and lyrics are exceptional too. It's one of those albums that may take a while to fully appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Engine.......2004-10-11

I loved Engine. It was a quirky, weird, but beautifully musical piece of music that flowed from beginning to end and never did what you expected. When DW first started it seemed like nobody was crossing genre boundaries like they were, writing pretty music when they wanted, hard music, electro music, tribal, whatever they felt suited the song. Not that artists like Radiohead are jumping boundaries, too, maybe people will finally get what they're doing.

Conveneince picks up where Engine left off. It's great lound, but the songs are complex and interesting and the vocals are thbest Marcus has ever done. I doubt there's a pop singer on the radio today with a voice this listenable and flexible. The lyrics are usually the best parts on DW records and here they are dead perfect. This is a great record for parties, and it pulls together better than any album I've heard since Cabaret Voltaire's Code, even though the music is diverse and challenging. This album is definitely going to spawn songs that will be great 30 years from now.

And the packaging is nice as well. Good work.

    Album Description

Great songs often define--and outlast--the shows that bring them to the public, and the twelve classic show tunes on this album are perfect examples.

These songs are so widely known that they exist independently from their originating shows, and have become part of our popular culture.

In this thirteenth recording for Hickory Cove, Jim Gibson brings his unique solo piano style to these well-loved songs, blending an obvious love of melody with his warm piano playing to create a very pleasant blend. One fan wrote, "It's like cocktail music, but much better....and like jazz, but gentler." We think you'll agree.
