Although this CD is called Celtic Voices, its scope is actually a bit narrower. Instead of covering the whole range of Celtic vocal music, it focuses on female singers chosen from the vaults of Gael-Linn, a label devoted to the best in traditional Irish music. The singers include Dolores Keane, Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill, Nóirín Ní Riain, and Máire Brennan, who performs with her band Clannad. One of the sweetest tracks is a duet by Mairead Ní Mhaonaigh and Frankie Kennedy from their pre-Altan days. Most of the selections are sung in Irish and feature pared-down arrangements that focus attention on the beauty of the voices. The music avoids the trap of becoming too ethereal because the singers are so grounded in tradition they don't allow themselves to drift away into the mists. --Michael Simmons
