A sprawling example of "world groove," Zap Mama's sixth album is further proof that in these interconnected times the musical world really is shrinking. Born in the Congo and raised in the French culture of Belgium, Zap Mama founder and driving force Marie Daulne has always ignored the barriers between musical genres like so many outdated speed limits on a dusty highway, but on Supermoon she dips into so many styles--Afropop, R&B, hip-hop, funk--as to reduce those barriers to a delightful irrelevancy. Helped by a smorgasbord of big-name collaborators--Me'shell N'degeocello, Tony Allen, and Spearhead's Michael Franti all guest for one track each--Daulne turns African pygmy music into a rollicking club anthem on "Gati," borrows James Brown's "Payback" guitar riff on "Toma Taboo," uses the intricate polyrhythmic arrangement of "Go Boy" for a touching tale of an African immigrant, and evokes modern soul singers like Macy Gray on the title track. Through it all, the intricate vocal arrangements and production that are Zap Mama's trademark--performed largely by Daulne herself--never fail to astonish. --Ezra Gale

    Album Description

There's an alluring place where the mystique of the African continent meets the complexity of the Western world. It's a place where rhythm and beauty, myth and melody, history and harmony converge. It's a place where anything is possible. For more than 15 years, the musical entity known as Zap Mama has stood at that crossroads. Born in the Congo to an African mother and Belgian father, harbored by pygmies in the forest in the midst of revolution, and raised in the predominantly French culture of Belgium, vocalist and founder Marie Daulne is not only a living map of the world, but a purveyor of its rich stories and an ambassador to all of its diverse cultures. A brilliant songwriter and performer, she distills and reflects creative energy from an infinite array of sources and beams it back to the world with a brilliance that is unsurpassed.

Longtime Zap Mama fans may take issue with the direction Marie Daulne has taken the band. After starting out as a women's a capella group, Daulne started integrating instruments, rappers and programming on Seven, taking it even further on A Ma Zone. Now on Ancestry In Progress, the first ZM album in five years, it's Daulne with help from the Roots, Common, Erykah Badu, Taleb Kweli and others from the hip-hop and R&B community. Nonetheless, the band was always Daulne's, and she's in complete command here again. You still get to wonder at her ability to create weird vocal sounds. Her high raspy cat-like voice is as playful and rhythmic as ever, and her sense of harmony stills draws upon her African roots even if she chooses to put samples over the top. No doubt "Sweet Melody" is one of Daulne's catchiest songs, but other standouts include "Vivre" and "Bandy Bandy." Instead of the African jungle we get the urban jungle, but it's still beautiful music. --Tad Hendrickson

    5 out of 5 stars Another Masterpeice.......2007-07-02

I became a fan of Zap Mama after I heard the A Ma Zone album several years ago. I went back and bought all of their CD's and I like the fact that they all have their own vibe. Each one has it own musical style, that is not similar to the previous. So then I found Ancestry and Progress and once again Zap Mama has made another masterpiece again.

My favorite songs are Sweet Melody, Bandy Bandy, Miss Q-N, and Yaku. Yet, I like the entire album. I feel that this album really hits a different mark so that it can't really be called World and at the same time it is not R&B, it is somewhere in between. I really use the use of vocals, but also good instrumentation in the songs. After hearing A Ma Zone then hearing this album I would have never expected an album like Ancestry in Progress and I really appreciate that. I can't wait until the next album comes out.

4 out of 5 stars flawed but quite good.......2006-02-02

Skillful yet seemingly effortless tapestries of sounds and voices. Male rapping that actually works as an effective counterpoint to the abundance of "sister energy". Songs that are ephemeral yet anchored in subtle ways, this is a daring yet confident step forward for a project that is, essentially, "The Marie Show" now. Not that that's a bad thing. The male vocals off-set the more cloying aspects which until now popped up far too often. While I admire the manner in which discordant sounds are thrown into the mix, I do wish Marie would be a BIT less self-indulgent with the spoken word parts (as in SHOW ME THE WAY) and (seemingly) affected pigeon English. Oh, well, at least she's shown more decisiveness on when to actually end a song. Overall; breathtaking and unclassifiable. This may sound like over-thinking things, but, I truly enjoy the songs, just hope to see Marie continue to grow up and out of herself. She is SO talented.

5 out of 5 stars this beauty in progress.......2005-09-09

You know how you feel when you sitting on the beach in front of the sea, with the fresh clean breeze gently blowing through your hair. You know how it feels to have that piece of milk chocolate melt gently in your mouth as it mesmerizes all the taste buds on your tongue.
That is what this lady does to you ear drum. Her music is sweeter that honey. And who better to colab with than with Miss Badu herself.
This lady has got magic in her vocal cords and tranquility in her lyrics. My poor soul was starved of good and original sound and she fed my soul. That is the way it should be after all music is intended to be food for the soul

    5 out of 5 stars AN UNDERCOVER 'THRILLER'(michael jackson).......2005-04-28

I havent loved this many songs on one cd since Michael Jackson's Thriller. No joke or exaggeration. The only difference iS that this isn't sugercoated pop music for the masses...that's why it's an "undercover Thriller".. It's different, but absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Buy it, love it, live it..Read all of the other perfect reviews. They are true... Peace.

5 out of 5 stars All the Funk Without the Filth.......2005-04-02

It's been a long dry spell since Amazone and this is worth the wait. The album is clearly a follow-up to Amazone, yet the style is refined a little more, so it is not simply Amazone II, the Sequel.

Each composition here is like a little window opening on a slice of life. The blending of the languages brings home, yet again, the universality of music. There are differences between peoples, but this difference is something to share and enjoy, not to separate us into disparate spaces. Whatever your background, you can feel a part of the scenes presented.

The spoken words take me back to the beginning of what is now called rap, to true street corner poetry. Unlike most of today's rap, there are no words you don't want young kids to hear. Instead of degrading women and reducing them to objects to be abused, we are instead reminded that "She is someone's daughter" and to be revered as she is made of "Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water". No malice, no hatred, only love of the highest order. Pure poetry, not gutter rap.

The vocals are perfectly blended and the harmonies are tight. These women blend together a vocal synergy that must be heard to be experienced. The rhythms, capable of standing alone, reinforce the musical magic woven into the tapestry of their sound.

If you truly believe we are one people spread across a small planet, this album will speak to your soul. If you've never been exposed to music like this, you'll be amazed. If you're already a fan of Zap Mama, you won't be disappointed.

Zap to the Future A Ma Zone is a collision of sound and culture

Running the gamut from soul to hip hop to drum & bass, Marie Daulne's Zap Mama is expanding the perameters once again with their fourth album A Ma Zone. With the help of people like Philly's hip hop dissidents The Roots ("Rafiki", "Songe"), This Kid Named Miles ("Kemake") who was featured on T-Love's incredible Return of the B-Girl EP last year, Speech ("M'toto") and the oft-sampled Camaroonian Soul-Makossa sax man Manu Dibango ("Allo, Allo"). Zap Mama pulls off an amazing balancing act, riding the fine line between the deep roots of Afropea, the newest continent, and the technology of the future.

A Ma Zone is Marie Daulne's full immersion into the music that kept her breakdancing through high school. Reuniting long lost sounds - West African guimbiri meets West Coast hip-hop scratching - and introducing them to the big city and village fire respectively. And because hip-hop and African music were both part of her childhood, Marie's fusion of zouk guitar montunos with raw breakbeats immediately makes sense. She always preferred listen ing to Stevie Wonder and Run DMC: "Our mother would make us learn the polyphonic singing, but at the time we thought it was boring because it was traditional." Instead, Marie honed her beautifully distinct vocal skills through imitation of the sultry voice of Roberta Flack and the lip-smacking beats of the Fat Boys' "Human Beat Box."

A Ma Zone marks a lyrical shift for Marie, from politics to the social shortcomings of modern society with the emphasis being placed on the dehumanizing effects of modern communication. Marie explains: "Everybody's in such a hurry these days that everything has to be done by telephone or over the information superhighway." A Ma Zone offers listeners an alternative to life at 56k.

We've told you too much already. All you need to know is that this record is a cool R n B, hip-hop gourmet salad. An afro-euro caviar, champagne and funk mixture. "I want to show of the rest of the world the power, the human capacity, through the voices and the sounds that people forgot, the sounds people made during the day, every day . All the sounds made by humans, instinctually , the sounds can relax people, can give energy, harmonies can make you cry. The universal sounds made by humans - American, European, Asian , African, Indian, Australian and Indonesian... laughing, swallowing, coughing." Let us not forget the beautiful sound of a press release being crumpled up either.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful and original CD.......2007-06-29

I bought this CD several years ago when I was living in the Bay Area of California. It really grew on me, and was one of the few CD's that I listen to all the way through. Every song on the A Ma Zone drew me in and made me feel like I was listening to an entire story, instead of a musical CD. A Ma Zone is made up of a number original sounding and intriquing songs. It is a good buy and I would recommend it to all.

5 out of 5 stars A Ma Zone by Zap Mama.......2005-12-02

"A Ma Zone" THE FIRST VERSION is one of the best CDs ever made. My saddness was when I ordered some of these as gifts and found out that the new version is NOT AS GOOD :(

The second version has another song first, insteaad of Rafiki. But the worst part is that the second version sound quality is really muffled and bad.

Does anyone have a copy of the original version of this CD, the one that has "Rafiki" as its first track, that they would sell???

5 out of 5 stars YET ANOTHER EXCELLENT ZAP MAMA CD!!.......2005-04-28

This is the third excellent review that I have given a Zap Mama Cd. If you listen to one of her cds, you will be 'Zapped' and want to check out her other cds. She is consistent in combining super R&B/funk with music and sounds from all over the world. She is SO VERY CONSISTENT IN MAKING GOOD, ORIGIONAL, CREATIVE SONGS that you don't get sick of hearing after 2 or 3 times. TIGHT..TIGHT..TIGHT CD....PEACE.

    Album Description

Unearthly harmonies born of Pygmy song, Moroccan chants and exhuberant scat made Zap Mama global a cappella queens. Now for the first time they meet the roots throb of bass and drums, shot through with equal parts highlife and hip-hop. Zap Mama is soul music for the diaspora. "If your ears are open," mama Zap Marie Daulne says, "you'll understand."

"Marie Daulne and Zap Mama make music that sounds like a one-woman multicultural movement, melding African percussion, American soul and European urbanity."

This is the album I reach for when I feel happy. The voices are so unusual and beautiful, and the joy throughout the music is infectious.

4 out of 5 stars Afro-pop with bits of disco, doo-wop, madrigal, Arab lament. .......2006-03-23

Wide variety of styles for sweet African voices, all distinct from one another. Most songs draw on Afro-pop, but they capture bits of disco, doo-wop, madrigal, and Arab lament. Some are more sound effects than songs. Some are static chants without real lyrics. One or two are too sweet. The closest parallel is Sweet Honey in the Rock, but Zap Mama is uniformly happier, lighter, even on Apartheid songs. Sample of variety: tr 1-Mupepe (closest to ethnographic); tr 6-Plekete (closest to Bobs); tr 9-Din din (sounds like a madrigal); tr 11-Guzophela (South African doo-wop). Stand-outs: tr 5-Take me CoCo. tr 13-Marie-Josée (classic polyrhythmic, sweet Afro-pop). tr 14-Ndje Mukanie (Afro-pop rich and smooth as herbed honey).

5 out of 5 stars Brrlak! This album is din din divine............2004-06-10

I know, shameless puns derived from the song titles. Anyway, I couldn't think of a better way to express the delight I have for this album everytime I play it in my stereo! Zap Mama's style is hard to describe. It is a fusion of sounds. We have improvisational harmonies, chants, latin elements, a pygmy chant and African-derived percussion and rhythms. But, guess what? The only instruments are the voices of the five magnificent women who are Zap Mama.

Some of my favorite tracks are "Brrrlak!" (hence, the title of my review), "Abadou (a Syrian song about a man crying over the loss of his favorite woman from his harem)," "Din Din (an original, abbreviated interpretation of a traditional Spanish song from the 16th century)," and "Guzophela (an anti-apartheid song)." Not only do these women have a flair for harmony, intepretation and unbridled spontaneity, they are also fine artists. I am so glad that this innovative musical quintet has continued to perform and collaborate together. Can't wait to hear the other albums!
    Check it out!

    5 out of 5 stars A world journey awaits........2004-02-29

The cd is simple. Simple cover art, and all the performers are using their voice. It's a cd that flows great. This is unlike anything else in my collection. You get sounds and chants from Africa and Europe, with some English thrown in. Just sit back, relax and let the sounds take you where they may. The sounds do sound familiar in a way. This is probably the best way I can describe this cd. Most other music is easy to review, but you just have to experience this cd.

Zap Mama are five women who are each of mixed African and European ancestry. They sing a cappella (with a little hand percussion sprinkled in) in a hybrid style that befits their background. The opening song is a spirited version of a Zairian Pygmy chant with a French recitation in the middle; the second song is an original new- wave, doo-wop number sung in English and percussive scat syllables. The rest of this album falls between those poles, absorbing sources from Cuba, Syria, Belgium, Rwanda, and Tanzania and remaking everything with a hip rock & roll modernism that gives the ancient vocal traditions an elliptical montage effect and a refreshing irreverence. --Geoffrey Himes

    5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2000-11-11

What incredible voices! There are nothing but vocals and percussion on this CD, but it is as textured and layered as anything that can be done with instruments. This music makes me feel exalted.

4 out of 5 stars Bobby McFerrin meets the Mahotella Queens.......2000-04-05

This first album by Zap Mama is their purest. It's almost entirely a capella, and is the least influenced by American pop culture. It's a fine balance between European and African influences, and the songs span 400 years of composition history.

To know Zap Mama is to love them. This group tackles every song with energy and enthusiasm, and their live performances are such a visual feast that you hardly know where to look at any moment. Their repertoire is so geographically diverse that I get cabin fever just listening to them.

When this album was recorded, Zap Mama was a core group of five singers, with additional guest vocals. The singers, especially Marie Daulne, have rich voices with a husky timbre. One at a time they are a delight to listen to; in harmony, they make me delirious.

The songs on this album all good, but there are a few standouts. "Brrrlak!," released as a single, is a fast tempo charmer with sophisticated rhythms. "Plekete" is an onomatopoetic road trip (literally), complete with car horns, a squeal of tires, and an ambulance siren. Three themes are presented one at a time, and the song culminates with a cleverly crafted overlay of all three. (This was the first Zap Mama song I ever heard; my then-toddler and I saw them perform it on, of all things, Sesame Street. I bought the album post-haste.) "Bottom," the only song with lyrics entirely in English, tells a story that is as understated as the film "Titanic" is over-the-top (and it's way shorter, at only one minute and twenty-nine seconds). "Din Din" shows off the group's remarkable intonation and precision. The introductory section of "Ndje Mukanie" does likewise.

Many of the songs on this album don't follow the standard popular song structure of verse-chorus-verse, and most of the time that's quite refreshing. But "Babanzele" leaves me longing for that familiar form; it's just a bit too static for something that long (seven minutes and thirty-five seconds). "Mizike" also seems a little long to me, and perhaps dated (hard to tell when you don't have a clue about the lyrics).

Lead singer and founder Marie Daulne is of both Belgian and Zairean descent, and musically, she's all over the globe. Most of what's on this album isn't in English, but that's actually an advantage; you can revel in the sounds and rhythms undistracted by the message of the songs. But even if these women were singing the contents of the phone book (and who knows? maybe they are), I'd be glued to the CD player till they were finished. I bet you will be too, when you hear Adventures in Afropea 1.

5 out of 5 stars Beaiutiful yet simple music........1999-12-11

Beaiutiful yet simple music. Zap Mama ia a group of five women of African/European origin. Their music is very harmonious acappella. The songs are verymulticultural (including some french interpretationstraditional african songs). This is great world music, very novel. It is a great change from the manufactured and uninspiring pop that one hears on radio.

    5 out of 5 stars True artistry of voice . . ........1999-10-27

I recently had the pleasure of hearing Zap Mama perform live. The perfection heard on this album is certainly on par with one's most stringent expectations. This album is especially unique thanks to the vocal instruments employed. If you listen carefully you will realize that Zap Mama does not require any "instruments" to make the most incredible music one might hear.

On their fourth album, Zap Mama slide even further away from their early manifestation as a cappella group singing the traditional pygmy chants of West Africa--but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Enlisting notable Philly hip-hop artists the Roots as well African pop star Manu Dibango, Zap Mama blend the traditional singing for which they gained notoriety with the modern beats of drum & bass and hip-hop. The mix steams up a breathy, sensual brand of Euro-African-American pop. "Comment Ça Va?" swivels in and out of slow hip-hop beats; dark, twanging oudlike bass; and lead singer Marie Daulne's delicate vocals. "'Allo 'Allo" goes light on the sax and heavy on the hook, bringing a funky, playful edge to the collection. "Kemake" grooves understatedly with organ and a soulful, spinning vocal, demonstrating this group's diversified sound. The upbeat French Afro-hip-hop of Les Nubians Zap Mama are not: these women entice with a subtle, underground sound that's all their own. --Karen K. Hugg

    5 out of 5 stars hot mamas.......2003-07-30

I borrowed this cd from a friend and have kept it for almost a year. It is what I always listen to in my car and at home. Zap Mama's collaboration with The Roots is going to break down barriers in music. It's smooth grooves and soft vocals will put you in a good mood any time you listen to it.

    5 out of 5 stars 6 stars.......2003-02-10

Any CD or album recognized as a classic, generally warrants such accolades within it's own genre. After listening to "a ma zone" repeatedly for years after it's release, I've concluded that the term "classic" for it's own genre (whatever that may be) sells this special CD short. Zap Mama has come up with a universal gem of all contemporary musics combined. Simply put, one of the greatest musical projects I've ever listened to. By mixing instrumental, electronic, and vocal dynamics within brilliant yet simple compositions, these angelic artists take you on an emotional ride of orgasmic proportions. Abstract as the Cocteau twins and as sophisticated as Les Nubians, Zap Mama succeeds in sounding like neither. Fusing elements of funk, alternative, jazz, hip-hop and so much more, this CD provides a flawless "must have" masterpiece for the eclectic ear. Rated 5 stars only `cause 6 wasn't an option.

4 out of 5 stars Too Much Euro, Needs More Afro.......2002-10-23

Zap Mama has described their own sound as "Afropean," meaning the mixture of European (or Western) hooks and instrumentation with the authentic African vocal stylings from group leader Marie Daulne's homeland. This is a very fun album but unfortunately there's a little too much of the Western and not enough of the non-Western. The main problem here is the many different types of music behind the group's vocals. As Zap Mama were once an acapella group, they're now backed by hip hop, funk, electronica, and R&B in alternating songs, leading to an album that is not very cohesive. This is what happens when too many producers and guest stars meddle with a group's basic sound. I do admit that the funk in "Allo Allo" is really swinging, but some of the music here just plain doesn't work. The predictable drums-n-bass beats in "Call Waiting" and limp R&B in "My Own Zero" really undermine Marie's seductive lead vocals and the ladies' unique African harmonizing. The best songs on this album are those that don't stray too far from Zap Mama's true roots in African vocal techniques, and that's no coincidence. The winners are "W'Happy Mama," "Gissie," and "Ya Solo." So while the music on this album is sometimes exasperating and detracts from the group's sound, overall the day is saved as Marie is an excellent singer and the group's harmony techniques are very intriguing.

Note: My copy of this album has two limited edition tracks - the soundtrack item "Iko Iko" which is a predictable cover song; and a remix of "Rafiki" which differs from the original only by having less melody and adding a useless rap overdub. Don't worry if you can't find a copy with these extra tracks because they're not essential.

4 out of 5 stars Beyond Simple Classification.......2002-06-28

A MA ZONE is definitely the most mainstream of their albums so far, but it doesn't completely stray from the more vocally driven sound of their earlier albums. It's also arguably their most eclectic set to date.

"Call Waiting" sounds like a perfect James Bond theme song with an Afrocentric twist. It's also a good showcase for Marie Daulne's passionate vocals.

For fans of Zap Mama's early work, "Gissié" is a real gem. The vocal interplay on the track is really nice. "M'Toto" is another fine track with playful vocals that sound like they are singing a nursery rhyme.

"'Allo 'Allo" has a mellow, but funky vibe that for obvious reasons sounds like a reworking of Manu Dibango's 1970's classic "Soul Makossa." "Kemake" is also very funky with a serious James Brown vibe.

Generally, all of the tracks are at least good, if not great. Adventurous hip-hop fans should really like this album. Fans of their a capella sound might be a bit disappointed. For most broadminded music fans, this CD is definitely worth a serious listen. It's better than 99% of the stuff you hear on commercial music stations.

    Check it out.

    5 out of 5 stars tribal trip-hop.......2002-05-06

This CD which I do not consider hip-hop is a tribal trip-hop. Each song is rich and stands alone without relying on a particular "style" On one track she even has a bjork infusion. I love this CD!

"Marie Daulne's soul music is as old as the Sahara and fresh as the beats du jour.

Seven completes Zap Mama's metamorphosis from an impressive a cappella group to a cutting-edge collective that whips up a tasty stew of hip-hop, jungle, reggae, pygmy chants and global pop... the possibilities are endless." - Billboard

5 out of 5 stars RANKS WITH 'ANCESTRY IN PROGRESS'.......2005-04-28

This cd is OUTSTANDING. IT has 8 solid song that are the bomb. These days you're lucky if you can get 2 good songs on a cd. If you like R&B, but are sick of either todays pathetic attempts at R&B or boring-wannabe-retro R&B, buy this cd. It, like Zap Mama's 'Ancestry in Progress', is outstanding at taking R&B/funk to a new, different, and GOOOOOOOD level. Peace.

3 out of 5 stars not their best.......2004-09-02

i love zap mama, and 7, though it has some great tracks, is the weakest work to date. their first is still the strongest, sabsylma not far behind, and then a ma zone, though it is in a completely different class. i cannot wait to hear ancestry in progress...also, zap mama is excellent live. marie daulne and her group always put together a gorgeous stage show and of course, they sound incredible. if you have the chance to see them, take it!

4 out of 5 stars Zap Mama - Like Nothin' You Have Heard B4!.......2004-01-16

The BEST Zap Mama album to date,IMHO. I was intro'd to this type of music in 90's during my first trip to Key West. Phoebe Snow's "Poetry Man" rocks, as does "Damn Your Eyes" & "Illioi"(sweet french child's voice as a hook in the song) Interesting to listen to... Afropean influence...

    5 out of 5 stars body movin'.......2000-07-11

there is certainly somthing wild about the music of these five women.

While not every song on this album may move you to dance, they will all move you. The haunting melding of a variety of cultures heard in Marie's voice alone is worth the buy, but when you put it with the rest of her cohorts, and throw in incredible rythms, you actauly end up getting more of a bargin basement steal.

If you watched the movie mission impossible two, then these are the women preforming "Iko-Iko" during the rock climbing scene.

Buy the CD, it's certainly more than worth the time, and the cost.

5 out of 5 stars YOU MUST BUY THIS!!.......2007-03-30

this is a great album by a great group. this is a must have album. it has an excellent blend of different styles. no two songs are the same!!! you wont regret this purchase!

5 out of 5 stars This can elevate you to the stratosphere!.......2002-11-03

By this album, there is no longer any doubt that Marie Daulne is, in fact, Zap Mama. The acrobatic vocal stylings of Zap Mama are still very evident here. They're still strange too; these women do things with their voices you've never heard before apart from this band. Singing in multiple languages and styles - many styles all their own. African instrumentation, R&B flavor, great stand-up basses, this list of musical elements is extensive.

My favorite songs are "Baba Hooker" which is so cool the way it struts, and "Illioi" which has incredible percussion and bizarre atmosphere including a cute little boy speaking french. "Poetry Man" is an excellent cover of the Phoebe Snow song, pretty faithful but with more UUUMMMPH. Plus, it's got an actual "poetry man" who talks over the song in a very deep voice. Way cool.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fine Introduction.......2000-09-06

For those who have never experienced the aural pleasures of Zap Mama, this CD is a fine introduction. Unlike their earlier CD's (which are also very good), this set has much more instrumentation and is more accessible to a general audience. Combining elements of many different styles of music, this CD is also beyond simple categorization. "Belgo Zairoise," the first track on the CD, is a good example. This rousing recording, takes you on a musical journey of three continents. The song ends with a self-affirming re-working of a classic Bob Marley & the Wailers lyric, with the women singing "No Man, No Cry." Open-minded fans of hip-hop will like the funky, "Baba Hooker," which features group leader Marie Daulne's sensual vocals with Spearhead's Michael Franti. Other cuts that immediately come to mind are "African Sunset," "Warmth" and "Damn Your Eyes." Zap Mama also offers a distinctive rendition of Phoebe Snow's classic, "Poetry Man." [For those fortunate to see Zap Mama's Marie Daulne sing a duet of the song with Ms. Snow on public television's "Sessions at West 54th Street," witnessed something very special. Hopefully, that episode will soon be available on video and/or CD soon]. In short, all of the tracks on the CD are first-rate. For me, this is the most purchased CD in recent memory -- either as gifts or because people I've loaned the CD, refuse to give it up! If you like music with rich multi-layered vocals and highly imaginative arrangements, this is definitely worth a listen. If, after purchasing the CD, you like the a cappella material the best, check out one of their earlier CD's next. If the funky side is what appeals to you, check out A MA ZONE next.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Zap Mama.......2000-07-17

Seven has a bit more of an R & B feel than A Ma Zone. It is a consistently incredible mix of Afropean rock and American Hip Hop, R & B, and Funk. I was very impressed by the compilations with Spearhead, although Michael Franti is depoliticized in his Zap Mama work (and vice versa). The understanding, blend, and use of such a variety of musical styles makes Zap Mama the most innovative artists today. And sheer talent!

5 out of 5 stars essence of sultry.......2000-06-16

zap mama sounds like the smell of lemon and honey-it's sultry/funky and ---it feels like hot tea in winter----it warms you all over----so make sure you have someone there to bring your temp. down......(or up) while you're listening-
