Amazon.com's Best of 1998

This poet, painter, and former lawyer from Asti, Italy, has been dazzling Italian audiences since the early 1970s but has just blazed into U.S. consciousness like a meteor with his Best Of debut album on Nonsesuch. After listening to his European style of cabaret music, you too will be hooked on the crooner who is widely appreciated for rhyming Napoli with Minneapoli. The selection of 20 songs ranges in style from a mixture of French chansonette to tango. All feature his raspy voice (Americans may be reminded of Tom Waits) with unmistakably wry lyrics that offer lovers and listeners alike the sensuality and complexity of gelato al limon (lemon ice cream). --Cristina Del Sesto

Amazon.com

Paolo Conte is a completely original talent, and his leathery, life-weary face on the cover is the first clue to the evocative music of this poet, painter, musician, and lawyer from Asti in northern Italy. Observations on the tide of human existence deftly rendered in vividly poetic lines that startle with their originality are highlighted in smoky vignettes of '40s jazz- and tango-inflected tunes, teetering between Cabaret, The Circus, and 42nd Street. Conte's unfiltered raspy voice is the perfect vehicle for his poignant view of the foibles of adult life mused from the corner barstool, admiring women whose "pungent smells [beckon] him like an old-fashioned grocery, its doors flung open to the spring outside." The music is a treat in itself, but the real gold is to be found in his lyrics, and luckily translations are in the liner notes. --Derek Rath

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great Italian jazz.......2007-02-21

I love Paolo Conte's voice and sense of rhythm. I found out about him by watching both movies Mickey Blue Eyes and Mostly Martha and I am hooked. The song Via Via is so compelling that I often listen to it 3 or 4 times in a row. Another plus: the words of the songs are included in the album, so I can follow and learn Italian in the process.

4 out of 5 stars Best of.......2007-01-11

Like always Paolo rocks. If you like this kind of music. There are some great tunes on this CD. A must have for every italian contemporary fan.

5 out of 5 stars a reason to live.......2007-01-09

I heard Paolo Conte in a restaurant and it was so distractingly GOOD that i asked the waitress who it was. Some of the production is a bit dated (i.e. awful drum samples on a couple of tracks), but overall, what a treat. His songwriting/harmonies are really interesting, but still catchy as hell. The real selling point is Paolo himself, though. He's like your wry uncle, cynical, yet affirming life rather than turning against it.

No need to understand Italian. "Sotto le Stelle de Jazz" is my hangover song of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Paolo brings european cabaret to your home.......2006-11-18

Paolo Conte manages to create a whole atmosphere of an European, smoke-filled cabaret with a masterful combination of a raspy, weather-beaten voice and a very european music.
The clear standout is "Sparring Partner" - used to deadly effect in Francois Ozon's 2004 movie 5x2. This peice alone makes the whole CD worth its money. "Via Con Me", "Colleghi Trascurati" and "Sotto Le Stelle Del Jazz" are superb too.
Whether you are listening by yourself, enjoying with your loved one or in a light party atmosphere, this CD is sure to bring joy, nostalgia, melancholy and happiness in your heart - all at the same time, just as the odd and near-perfect blend of throaty vocals and wonderful - wonderful music.

5 out of 5 stars Viva Italia.......2006-03-16

Maravilloso, este compacto es bellisimo, musica apta para toda la familia,de verdad hace al corazon gozar y anhelar todas las cosas ricas que la vida tiene para paladear!!
Altamente recomendable.

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD!.......2007-07-16

If you like the Celtic Women you'll love this one by Chloe Agnew. She sings like an angel. It includes some of the best songs from the other CDs and includes several new ones.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful voice.......2007-07-01

Chloe has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. I love this album. I only wish this album had Chloe's rendition of Ava Maria. Chloe is only 18 or 19 and I can only imagine her voice becoming more beautiful as her vocal talents mature. She truly has the voice of an angel!

3 out of 5 stars her voice is too thin..........2007-06-21

Her voice not as satisfied as I expected. Bought this because I want the first song:
walking in the air. Her voice is good for this song, but for the rest of the songs, I think her voice is a little too thin, no strong emotion to support it.

5 out of 5 stars Walking in the Air - Chloe Agnew.......2007-06-20

A perfect choice of songs to showcase the talents of this young "Celtic Woman" soprano. It's a joy to listen to over and over and compliments the other solo CDs put out by the other individuals from the Celtic Women group. So much talent! I will look forward to Chloe's next solo CD.

1 out of 5 stars Celtic Woman #1.......2007-06-14

If you're going to own only one of the myriad of Celtic Woman CD's, this is the one. Yes, there's only one performer; however the range of musical selections is quite large and typical of the best fare on other Celtic Woman productions. It's become my first choice when I'm in this musical mood.

Originally best-known as an Italian-born model who had affairs with Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, Bruni has matured into a remarkably talented and self-possessed singer-composer-guitarist. Her debut album, sung mostly in French, could best be described as neo-chanson. Bruni's whispery, wobbly, husky voice, wryly deadpan delivery and introspective lyrics recall Francoise Hardy, Barbara, Jane Birkin and Nico. But unlike her forebears, who so often posed as waif-like child-women and doormat-like victims of passion, Bruni remains firmly on top. Her lyrics can and do celebrate true love but she also praises the delights of female sexual empowerment in no uncertain terms, as on J'en Connais ("I've Known A Few"). Musically, the tunes range from folk Français to echoes of le jazz hot to bluesy torch numbers. The spare, mostly acoustic instrumentation is unfussy and atmospheric, while the I-couldn't-care-less ambience is occasionally punctuated by chimes, insouciant whistling or an impudent, sly giggle. --Christina Roden

Album Description

V2 Records cordially invites you to a very special listening experience of Carla Bruni. Rarely does an album come along that touches everyone who listens to it, even those that do not speak the language in which it was recorded.

Quelqu'un M'a Dit, the first album from the acclaimed French singer-songwriter, Carla Bruni, captures you with the first note and leaves you humming the last.

The Franco-Italian beauty sings of love and loves lost with the ability to evoke powerful images across any language barrier.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The words, the mood. Fantastic! .......2007-07-17

None of the reviews have mentioned the words. I speak a little french but not enough so I googled the lyrics in french, and then copied them to babelfish and had them translated. THEY'RE SO GREAT! They're very smart and the philosophy is deep... really, they're not about how sad love is at all. If anything they're very playful and mischevious. Je suis le plus beau she sings that she's the handsomest man in the neighborhood and all the women swoon for her, so do their husbands. In J'en Connais she talks about how her poor mama throws up her hands and says What have I done wrong. In Le Derniere Minute she sings, in one minute, how on her death bed she'll be pleading with death for one last minute...

The thing that makes her unique is how she sets a mood. It's very different from Sade or Nora Jones. Like them, Her delivery and melodies are very intimate, as if she's singing in your ear. But what makes her sexy isn't fake sighs and the whimpers,it's the playful teasing tone. Like you're laying in bed with her, she tells you little fantasies and makes little murmuring jokes... What a sexy mood!

I'm besotted with her right now.

4 out of 5 stars Great sound, but only 37 mins. of music .......2007-06-08

Great sound. I really like Carla Bruni's sensuous, natural voice. Perhaps a bit disappointing that there's only 37 mins. of music on this CD.

3 out of 5 stars good effort.......2007-03-09

This cd has some nice tunes, and Carla has a sexy, come-hither voice, making for a seductive album. But ultimately her songs all tend to sound mostly the same, and the monotone of her voice and style can tend to annoy.

5 out of 5 stars so beautiful it makes you want to cry.......2007-03-02

This album is so sweet and beautiful. The gentle nuances of Bruni's voice move you to fall in love with your surroundings. it really is so beautiful it makes you want to cry.

Italian, Spanish, or English: Laura Pausini's edgy, electric vocals are some of the most vibrant in contemporary pop. The endearing diva has been around for more than a decade, but the 2004 disc Escucha found her enjoying a newfound musical independence and worldwide success. Yo Canto is a long-brewing project dear to Pausini's heart: a collection of Italian pop covers spanning her lifetime. As with most of Pausini's releases, the disc is available in Italian and in Spanish. Yo Canto veers from dramatic balladry to fiery rock moments, anchored by Pausini's swooping, powerful vocal work. Several songs will be unfamiliar to fans outside of Italy, but it hardly matters. Pausini makes every moment her own, from the triumphant title track to the bittersweet "Escribeme." She's joined by international rock star Juanes during the lovely, lilting "Mi Libre Cancion." And fellow Italian pop idol Tiziano Ferro joins in for a new take on his brooding 2003 hit, "No Me Lo Puedo Explicar." There are many moments of sublime loveliness here. In other words, just another day in the musical life of Pausini. --Joey Guerra

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Me encanta!.......2007-05-26

The cd is perfect! is easy to order and they send it fast and safety.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding CD - Her Best Yet.......2007-05-13

I first bought a Laura Pausini CD ("The Best of Laura Pausini") about a year ago when I was building up my Italian music collection. I wasn't thrilled with that album or Laura though until I purchased her DVD Live 2001-2002 World Tour (A MUST HAVE!). After that I was hooked and now can appreciate her depth as an artist. She is a hard, hard worker, a perfectionist, and very gifted. She has since become one of my favorites. "Io Canto" for me is her best album yet. Every song on the album, though not written by her (which is normally the case) is a keeper and touches the listener on some level. One word of advise about Laura or any other Italian artist: Many record their albums in both Italian and Spanish versions ("Yo Canto" being the Spanish version in this case). I strongly suggest that you ALWAYS get the Italian version. Even though I speak Spanish and don't speak Italian (yet) somehow something gets lost in the translation.

3 out of 5 stars Not her best.......2007-04-19

This is a good album but not her best. I found it a bit boring. There is no catchy tune on this one like on her previous ones. But is is still pleasant to listen to and her voice is beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Cover. Great songs.......2007-04-13

No. I do not speak a word of Italian and yes Pausini sounds as if she is yelling at her boyfriend for staying out late with the guys but still this is a great sounding album with some foot stomping tunes that I listened to again and again. If you can have only one Album where you have no idea what they are saying then this is the one for you. Io Canto?? Yes. You can.

5 out of 5 stars LAURA AT HER BEST.......2007-04-04

1 out of 5 stars Every song sounds the same.......2007-04-13

My husband and I buy many Italian CDs so we think we have good judgement after so many purchases. We were somewhat disappointed in this CD. Every song has the same instrumentation and basically sounds the same. We wonder even if the mandolins are "live" or just canned, they sound so tinny and the same each song. This CD could have used more feeling, romance, whatever...possible had there been some sensitive arrangements with solos, etc. Instead, it was the same bunch of mandolin sounds which made for a very boring CD, in our opinion. A few vocals would have helped the monotony, too. Would not recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional Italian music.......2007-03-31

This is a great album of really very traditional Italian music. It is not anglicised but just like you hear when you go to Italian festas.

Adelmo Fornaciari, aka Zuccero (Sugar), was born in 1955 near Reggio, Italy and grew up fascinated by American blues and R&B. Like so many of his countrymen and women, he exhibits a rare knack for fortunate and widely diverse collaborations. He has worked with Randy Jackson, Narada Michael Walden, Eric Clapton, Brian Auger, Luciano Pavarotti, the New Orleans Gospel Choir, Johnnie Johnson, Pat MacDonald of Timbuk 3, Jeff Beck, Stewart Copeland and Sting, among others. Given this background, it is thus not surprising that the present album, an international multi-million seller, is a star-studded affair guided by the motto "United in diversity, in blues we trust." More comfortable in English than most European singers, the headliner easily holds his own with a roster that includes Sheryl Crow, Macy Gray, Miles Davis, Vanessa Carlton, B.B. King, plus Sting-sponsored Algerian Rai idol Cheb Mami and Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries. From the opening, fate-haunted duet with blues legend John Lee Hooker to the closing classically-influenced, heavily orchestrated flight of fantasy sung with both Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli, Zucchero keeps the hits coming. --Christina Roden

4 out of 5 stars it is not quite like watching him perform live........2007-08-07

This is a studio recording of all the familiar songs of his or someone else's in English.

His voice effortlessly surpasses any male vocal artists and set you in the right mood and clear your mind for sure.

But, find his live video clips on-line or DVD, and you will get the instant chill from Mr. Sugar's spiritual sounds.

The compilation of this CD is OK, half of them are great and with the other half, well, having those guest singers sing along, his voice get more pop-like and screened.

5 out of 5 stars Zucchero & Co.......2007-07-12

Zucchero just gets better and better with time.
Fabulous album just like Zu & Co
Definitely worth to buy both !!
The entire track is great not just one song !!

2 out of 5 stars Zucchero,Italian for "sugar"--and sappy.......2007-04-15

One of the typical coffee shop questions goes "Would you like sugar in your coffee?" Considering this album was sold-and played-at Starbucks shops,it's an aural experience of sugar for your coffee.A teeth-decaying amount. It calls for mouthwash, dental floss, and an electric toothbrush.

"Zucchero&Co" has the sappy faux blues singing of Zucchero "Sugar" Fornaci, and his collaborations on this album show his talent-the little he has-being eclipsed by his partners."As I lay down" is haunting because of John Lee Hooker's vocals. "Blue",a sappy song composed by U2's Bono,Zucchero sings with Sheryl Crow, whose talent outshines his.I like Sheryl Crow's music-but this song does her no justice. There are great instrumentals with Miles Davis&Eric Clapton on "Dunne Mosse" and "Wonderful World",leaving the listener to wonder why they're on this album. They've done so much better."Mad about you" is a typical sappy Sting song-luckily he's a better singer than Zucchero. "Pure Love" with Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries (well, this track IS a turkey)has a great Celtic sound, but BOTH O'Riordan&Zucchero are annoying singers, with O'Riordan's vocals particularly grating."Pure Love" is a musical depiction of codependence,or the merging of two who lack talent. Finally, there's Zucchero's collaboration with Cheb Mami in "Cosi Celeste." Cheb Mami had a great duet with reggae star Ziggy Marley,an electrifying combination of Algerian rai with reggae.Their talents were as one. Here,on "Cosi Celeste",Cheb Mami's talent outruns Zucchero's by a country mile-yet his part is on the sidelines.

"Zucchero&Co" is sappy adult contemporary easy listening. It's definitely sugary chocolate syrup for the double mocha latte at Starbucks.

We were introduced to this CD by a friend and were hooked. This was our signature stocking stuffer for the holidays. Whatever your taste of music this CD will certainly have it. From jazz to pop to opera you'll be amazed at this incredible singer and want to tell your friends as well.

5 out of 5 stars Zucchero is a genius!!.......2007-01-12

Is it Joe Cocker? No. Is it Ray Charles? No. It's....Zucchero!! And Zucchero is a genius. Pure and simple. This album is amazing. SO many favorites.... Blue, with Sheryl Crow is beautiful. Cosi Celeste with Cheb Mami is unforgettable. I Lay Down with John Lee Hooker, haunting. Muoio Per Te with Sting, fabulous. Buy this album and enjoy the immense talent and versatility of Zucchero. Ah, so sweet!

Album Description

After the chaos and destruction of World War II and the conservative musical environment Italian leaders promoted, the Italian public was ready for a more relaxed sound. Jazz, swing and boogie-woogie were achieving worldwide popularity and merged with the Italian crooner tradition. The musical rebirth of the 1950s and '60s was like a second liberation. Putumayo's Italian Café captures the music and attitude from that era and from current singers whose musical DNA follows that lineage. While most foreign music was banned under the Italian fascist regime, Fred Buscaglione wound up in a U.S. internment camp, where he was able to get a jumpstart in trying out the styles emerging from America. Quartetto Cetra emerged in the late '40s, when they provided the overdubs for the Italian versions of the movies Dumbo and Wizard of Oz. The following decade found Renato Carosone blending Neapolitan folk music with American jazz and boogie-woogie to create a signature style that made him a household name in Italy and a chart-topping crooner in the U.S.

Nicola Arigliano is the only 1950s-era artist on Italian Café performing to this day. Born in 1923 in a small village in southern Italy, Arigliano ran away from home when he was just 11 years old to play music in the nightclubs of Milan. Arigliano disappeared from the concert stage for 30 years. In the past decade he re-emerged with four new albums.

Gianmaria Testa is more famous abroad than he is at home in Italy, where he works as a train station manager. You can hear his trademark gruff, whispering voice on two songs on Italian Café. Daniele Silvestri's "Le Cose in Comune" won Italy's equivalent of the Grammy, as best song of the year.

The collection features extensive liner notes in English, Italian, Spanish and French.

2 out of 5 stars Found most of the songs old fashioned and hokey.......2007-04-30

I expected more from this CD, based on the other Putumayo series I purchased in the past. Most of the renditions are really dated. The male vocals on Carina and Gne Gne are so bad they are almost funny. If it were cheaper, I would say go for it, but at $12.99, it isn't worth it for the few oldie songs on there.

1 out of 5 stars One Star For the One Track I Liked.......2006-12-19

I'm going to the trouble of writing this review to warn you: this cd is not like the other Putumayo cds. No, it is not fun, hip, relaxing, good to dance to, or stimulating. It is a selection of hackneyed Sinatra-style slop sung by a variety of leery-sounding men with fake deep voices. I have this rule for music: if it makes me think of animated dogs kissing over pasta, it sucks. Consider yourself warned. If you like good music, try French Cafe instead.

4 out of 5 stars nostalgia.......2006-06-06

I'm a music teacher and I speak Italian very well. I heard most of this CD while cleaning up after a Tuscan-themed Teacher Appreciation Lunch at my own son's school. I think this CD is a great find: contains a whole bunch of music I wasn't familiar with; witty lyrics, and a real authentic, not-overproduced feel. I really had not heard indigenous Italian jazz, and now I find that it's great stuff. I'm pretty picky--for instance, love Putamayo's Gypsy Caravan and Arabic Groove but detest Jewish Odyssey. So for what it's worth, that's my opinion.

2 out of 5 stars A little too old fashioned for some tastes.......2006-02-21

Having purchased previous Putamayo products such as the African, Mississippi blues, and French sets, I expected this to be in the same style. The previous sets blended the new with the old very well and had a much more contemporary feel to them. This set is old fashioned music and songs done by both traditional and modern artists. Even with the modern artists, the style is old fashioned and in many cases, dated. Some songs are better than others but overall there's no balance of where that older music lead to. I'm no expert on Italian music (I'm a bigger consumer of their food) but it seems there's better stuff out there than this.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2005-10-26

I love it so much, and bought three CDs for my friends, they all love it.

Born in Rome into a working-class family, hunky Italian pop idol Eros Ramazzotti first made his mark following a move to Milano in the mid-eighties. His career really took off in 1984, after he won the category of "New Voice" at the influential San Remo Festival for his song Terra Promessa. As a singer-songwriter, he specializes in sweeping, passionate ballads and large-scale power-rock numbers and has racked up an impressive array of duets with other international favorites like Celine Dion, Cher, Portugese neo-fado sensation Dulce Pontes, Tina Turner and crossover mega-star Andrea Bocelli. A canny self-marketer with huge European following, especially in Germany, Ramazzotti records each of his albums in both his native tongue and in Spanish, a technique that has made him enormously popular in Central and South America. The voice, a polished yet endearingly up-front tenor, wrenches every drop of emotion from his lyrics, which tend toward the florid side. But if the man undeniably knows the meaning of a good hook, his songs are nonetheless anchored by an essential vulnerability that makes his work extremely appealing. --Christina Roden

I live in New Zealand and no music stores stock Eros' music. I first heard him in Russia and have now been able to get all his albums thru amazon.com. I do not understand a word he says but the music, expression, beat and rhythm enhance my understanding. His sound is great!

5 out of 5 stars un classico.......2007-03-18

4 out of 5 stars Eros won me over.......2006-11-22

My first album of Eros Ramazzotti and what a way to an introduction. I am not familiar of his previous albums, but this album is a great album. This to me is the epitome of good pop writing. It has hooks and melody all over the album. The production is a 5 star. World class musicians play on this album and it shows it excellence. I think that Eros' voice is very unique. It took me a while to get used to it, but in the end he won me over. This album has an Elton John feel writing wise in the slow songs even in the acoustic guitar dominated tunes. Maybe that is just me, but it's an album with full of emotions. Even songs that I wasn't crazy on "Uno Nuovo Eta." It had this modern R&B element going on, but the chorus has a beautiful melody that made me forget the verses. Atleast the R&B approach was more Brian McKnight versus a producer like Timbeland where the beats are scattered in incomprehensive patterns. "I Belong To You" duet took me a while to like. I thought the simplitic pop lyrics like "I love you" and feel of the song was a typical duet, but it also won me over in the end. The reason it won me over was because the progression of chords of this song(very Elton Jon like)was a bit different than those usual pop duets, so it made the whole melody unpredictable in a good way. Then the two different languages made it unique, but it could also very easily be considered cheesy as well. As for the other songs there is not much to say. They are all excellent. I give this album 4 and a half star out of 5. It is one of my favorite albums I have bought this year. It won me over.

5 out of 5 stars EROS Ramazzotti - Calma Apparente.......2006-07-28

This is one of the best CDs I have purchased in a long time.
You don't have to speak Italian to have the music touch you.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best Albums.......2006-05-07

By looking at this CD means that most probably you are aware of Italian music or have at least heard a song or two from Eros Ramazzotti. As this CD goes, in my humble opinion it is definitely one of his best, maybe a close second to his other album `EROS'. As for song eleven, `I Belong to you (Il Ritmo della Passione)' with Anastacia, is one of the best ballads I have ever heared. Most of the songs are simply beautiful and proofs why Eros is so well known in the international music scene.

To sum up, this album is highly recommended!!!

The names on this tribute testify to the extraordinarily wide appeal of the Italian film composer Ennio Morricone: not many people could get Bruce Springsteen, Celine Dion, Quincy Jones, Renée Fleming, and Metallica on one disc. And while the artists come from very diverse genres, the album holds together well. Things start off on a syrupy note with Dion's "I Knew I Loved You," a ballad from 1984's Once Upon a Time in America (to which Alan and Marilyn Bergman added lyrics in 2006). But fortunately the CD quickly recovers and goes on to survey most of Morricone's styles, from the dissonance of his spaghetti Western scores to his mod period to his lush orchestral vistas. Metallica goes all out with guitars blazing on "Ecstasy of Gold," a track they've used as a concert intro for years, while Brazil's Daniela Mercury and Eumir Deodato breeze through "Conmigo," and the French-British combo Vanessa and the O's resuscitate the pure '60s pop of "Je Changerai d'Avis," once performed by Françoise Hardy. As for ballads, listen for soprano Renée Fleming, who surpasses her previous pop-crossover attempts on the fragile "Sail Away." Morricone himself couldn't stay away: he wrote interstitial music to create seamless transitions between the tracks, and conducts three instrumental cues. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars This will DELIGHT Morricone fans!.......2007-06-12

Not sure what there is not to love about this disc. The interpretations are unique, sometimes quirky and always interesting; the recording is gorgeous; and Morricone's segues, which he composed and recorded, are very cool and show that much thought and creativity went into the overall production. (Only complaint is the absence of translations for the foreign-language tracks.) After reading some of these reviews, I had doubts about making the purchase. Now I'm so grateful that I did! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL TRIBUTE TO ONE OF THE GREATEST FILM COMPOSERS OF OUR TIME.......2007-05-27

I am a "die hard" Ennio Morricone fan and have been since 1968, so I can't understand for the life of me why the other reviews for this disk are so negative about this absolutely beautiful album!

I was thrilled to see Ennio finally receive an Academy Award this year! He deserved to receive many Academy Awards over the past 40 years for all his magnificent works. Next to Elmer Bernstein, I consider him my favorite film composer. Many of the selections on this album I had never heard before. Metallica playing "The Ecstacy of Gold" is absolutely reiveting! Andrea Bocelli is a perfect fit to sing Ennio's songs. Incidentally, Mr. Bocelli also sings two of Ennio's otherwise unknown songs on one of his older albums. Unknown to us in the USA only because Ennio has chosen to focus his life's work on mostly Italian film scores.

I only wish his scores were more accessable to us living outside of Italy. I have much of his film music, but it's still very hard to find. I truly feel that the genius of Ennio's music will not fully be appreciated until after he is gone from us.

So to anyone who really wants to know what a modern film score genius sounds like...BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

4 out of 5 stars We all love ennio morricone.......2007-04-04

a very diverse and interesting collection of hybrid pieces based upon the work of morricone. my only complaint was that the invited artists were not highlighted enough in the pieces. otherwise, i would given this a 5. I especially liked the european flavor of many of the pieces.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed in Ennio Marricone's Latest.......2007-03-31

This CD was a real disappointment. It was contrived by using famous names to sing songs that should have been orchestred pieces. Yo-Yo-Ma-Plays-Ennio-Morricone was superb and I had expected some of the same quality which is not there.

2 out of 5 stars This will disappoint die-hard Morricone fans.......2007-03-29

Not that I'm a total die-hard fan, but I spent several years collecting the most obscure Morricone soundtracks I could find. And I just saw him perform at the United Nations and Radio City Music Hall in February 2007. Initially, I had high hopes for this CD. Those hopes didn't last much into the first listen...

This tribute album is cover versions of only (arguably) his most popular songs. The covers on this album pale, in general, to the originals. Some are just plain emotionless. Celine Dion and Metallica in particular manage to suck the life out of Morricone's originals. As cover versions, they're vulgar. But that's part and parcel of the Morricone catalog; in over 400 soundtracks, you will find as much beauty as you will vulgarity. In that respect, this CD might still represent his body of work even if it doesn't translate it very well. There is some good, some bad, and some just ugly.

We may all love Morricone, but we do not all love to hear his work treated the way some of these artists chose to treat it. If you're like me, you'll prefer to spend your money on Morricone's original works (though a few do appear on this CD). I recommend "Crime and Dissonance", a compilation of Morricone music curated by Mike Patton, released on Patton's Ipecac label.

4 out of 5 stars It's truly the best of Laura.......2006-11-03

I love Laura Pausini, but some of her CDs sound like you're listening to the same song over and over. This CD is a perfect mix of her greatest hits. I love it!

5 out of 5 stars One of her best Albums.......2006-05-07

This CD is one of the best that Laura Pausini has brought out. It is a collection of her best songs during the decade of the 90s till 2000. Laura Pausini is considered, along with Nek, Eros etc., one of Italy's most known artist in the international music scene. As for her voice, well it is very beautiful and crystal clear. To make the long story short, the songs of this cd are very good and some extraordinary, some are slow (ballads) while some others 'more fast' (pop songs). Either way, buying this cd you will not regret it. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2005-08-08

Great cd, great compilation! My favorites would have to be: E ritorno da te (although I like it better in Spanish, "Volvere Junto a Ti"), La Solitudine (I have heard her sing this song from 5 different sources and every time she varies it! But this is a great new version of it), Strani Amori, Le Cose Che Vivi, Ascolta il Tuo Cuore, One More Time (BEAUTIFUL!), Tra te e il mare (always a favorite), il mio sbaglio piu grande, and another new song Una Storia Che Vale which is fantastic!
The only complaint I have is the new version of Gente. In the beginning there's this weird whispering in English..."ordinary, ordinary people..." and it's just really not necessary; it even makes me a little carsick. I like the original version better.
But other than that, great cd and a must-have!!

5 out of 5 stars I'm Glad.......2005-06-04

"E ritorno da te" is one of the most beautiful and amazing songs I've ever heard in it's genre. It's a very powerful song that I have learned to sing along to by studying the lyrics. I also have a good background in Spanish that helps me to understand Italian.

5 out of 5 stars la meravigliosa Laura.......2005-03-11

This is my first Laura Pausini CD, but certainly won't be my last; it is an exceptional compilation spanning the years 1993 through 2000, though the early ones have been updated, and read "2001 version".
"Seamisai (sei que me amavas)" is a duet with Brazilian singer/songwriter Gilberto Gil from Laura's 1996 "Le Cose Che Vive" CD, and she sings one song in English, from the soundtrack of the 1999 Kevin Costner film "Message in a Bottle", and it is exquisite, and features the great Dean Parks on guitar.
A winner of many awards, Laura won first place with "La Solitudine" at the prestigious San Remo Festival in '93 when she was 19 years old, and third place with "Strani Amori" in '95.

Laura's voice has a tender and smoky sound when singing softly, and has a powerful high register which she uses masterfully (in this respect she can be compared somewhat to Celine Dion) and her pitch is perfection...it reminds me of a tennis player hitting the ball in the sweetspot of the racket...Laura hits each note in its sweetspot.
The arrangements are lush and beautiful, and many of the songs incredibly lovely, and could not possibly be sung better. The booklet insert has all the lyrics, recording info, and many photos of the doe-eyed Ms. Pausini. The sound is terrific and total playing time is 66'24.
