There was nothing like the Robeson sound, ever. To describe his deep, rich, perfectly equalized instrument is futile. Go instead to "Balm in Gilead," the opening track, and see if you can listen to the last pianissimo phrase without falling to pieces. Robeson was at his best when the music was slow and the words contained spiritual or social messages. Faster, lighter fare like Kern's "I Still Suits Me" or Gershwin's "It Ain't Necessarily So" find the serious-minded singer out of his element, lacking irony and swing. "Old Man River," though, gets a simple, dignified treatment. It's Songs of Free Men, though, that will just keep Robeson's artistry rolling along, especially in Sony's astonishing transfers. --Jed Distler

4 out of 5 stars Robeson on wax.......2007-06-19

I found this album in a thrift store last week, for a couple of dollars. It's the original pressing on four 78 RPM records, in a gatefold format. It's in pristine condition. I really bought it for the incredible cover art, although I hope to be able to listen to it in this format at some point.

5 out of 5 stars The voice, the sound quality and the interpretation.......2004-09-24

Put this on your stereo and if it is good enough the depth and richness of Robeson's voice will make your fillings rattle and your chest rumble. The power of his voice is awesome. This CD is superbly recorded with no audible noise at normal listening levels.

4 out of 5 stars A Voice from the 40s, often dated, often moving.......2002-09-01

"Red diaper babies" have greeted this disc with nostalgic joy, and it captures a time and an aesthetic and a political belief with precision. Anyone interested in the emotional life of the pro-Soviet left of the 1940s should buy this disc. It's something like Henry Wallace set to music. There is much more to Robeson than that, however, and Sony has given us Robeson whole: there are songs by American masters of the musical, there are labor songs, religious songs, as well as the kind of faux-folk songs which the butcher supreme Josef Stalin encouraged and which were not taken seriously inside the USSR (except at gunpoint!!) but which were taken up by dupes around the world. This is Robeson at his least savory - willing propagandist for a vile mass murderer. Songs such as "Native Land" (fittingly, Robeson is referring to the Soviet Union) and the Red Army song are the equivalent of the "Horst Wessel Song", anthems of murder, and it is difficult to listen to the worst of them without retching. On the other hand, Robeson's commitment to American folk culture was real. "Balm in Gilead" is deeply beautiful; "John Henry" is heroic; "By an' By" is both resigned yet hopeful. "Joe Hill" captures an era in labor history. Anyone interested in American popular song should hear these. Turning to Broadway, his "Old Man River" is very fine, though Robeson changed the lyrics for political reasons and Leonard Warren has done the song better. I disagree with the editorial reviewer: "I Still Suits Me" is wonderfully playful and shows Robeson using his gorgeously rich voice to tease and poke fun. However, Marc Blitzstein's "Purest Kind of a Guy" is beyond saving - another example of Robeson recording an unworthy song by a political fellow-traveller. Ugh. But for every miss there are two hits. Robeson performs Mendelssohn's Elijah with nobility, and sings his favorite song, "Water Boy", with joyous pride: "There ain't no hammer that's on these mountains that rings like mine, boys, that rings like mine."
No one need have any fears about the mono sound quality. The orchestra in the second half of the program is at times a little dwarfed by Robeson's voice, but it generally sounds clean and colorful, and the great artist's voice rings like no other.

5 out of 5 stars Robeson at his best.......2000-05-12

It's hard to believe that most of these recordings pre-date the advent of magnetic tape: the CD transfer is superlative. The songs and performance are beyond reproach. Notable is the imaginative packaging in miniature 'record album' format, complete with the original cover art, and a replica of the original Columbia record label applied to the CD.

In response to a previous question: Robeson's performance of Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) can be found on the Vanguard LP entitled "Robeson" (VRS-9037).

5 out of 5 stars some of the greatest songs of the last century.......2000-05-05

In the 1940s, before rabid McCarthyism and racism had taken its toll on him, Robeson made these wonderful recordings of spirituals, classics and pop tunes. Accompanied by the solo piano of the incomparable Lawrence Brown, or by an orchestra, the songs ring out with pride, dignity, skill and unmatched integrity. The shameful treatment that Robeson was subject to from American authorities certainly seem grotesquely absurd to a modern listener. The wonderful version of "The House I Live In" included on this cd should forever kill off any suspicion that Robeson did not love his country deeply. This album ought to be heard by millions of people, world wide. Robeson's voice is nothing less than a glorious high point in 20th century music, and it's hard to think of any recording capturing it to greater advantage.

Product Description

"Visions and Dreams" is the long awaited follow up to "Progressive World". AutumnÂ’s Child once again blends the native American flute with colorful instrumentation including: harp, cello, piano, guitar, percussion and more! The first half of the album was written with the "global chamber" sound they have made popular and are so well known for. Sensuous melodies balanced with world music grooves. These arrangements are beautifully orchestrated and well crafted, using the particular instruments with specific purpose and intent that enhances and enriches the compositions. Music that is accessible and appeals to a variety of ages and all walks of life. The last half features a more jazzy influence with pieces like "Open Sky" and the beautiful arrangement of "Be Thou My Vision" to the reggae-ish groove, "Patchouli Breeze". This recording has amazed listeners at how these wood flutes can play so many different styles of music... and all on one cd! The 3 interludes offer abbreviated sonic markers with the native flute and a String Orchestra from Prague Czech Republic, licensed from an upcoming PBS documentary entitled, "Redemption Road". The opening 2 compositions are almost considered one... with "Painting A Dream" played in a dreamy, lyrical style followed by "Avenue Of The Villa", a bit more up tempo with tabla driving the piece. "Midnight Rain" is an absolutely beautiful melodious piece with flute and cello weaving light in the darkness with incidental french horn lines adding to the mix with piano. "Sketches Of Autumn" is sort of a bouncy shuffle that drifts into a lovely arrangement of Neil YoungÂ’s "After The Goldrush"arranged for native flute, cello and guitar. Also worthy of note for this recording is the use of the bamboo bansuri on "An AngelÂ’s Whisper In A Bamboo Garden" as well as "Sunlit Waterfall". "...Bamboo Garden" is one of the most meditative, hypnotic pieces on the album. (hint: listen deep into the cd for an improvisation with bansuri and tabla) "Visions and Dreams" is a prime example of what "new directions" for the native American flute is all about! AutumnÂ’s Child continues to create new sonic territories with their creative approach of fusing different musical designs. Mya Duran - New World Music

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mark Holland does it again!.......2002-12-10

Mark Holland continues to rise to the challenge of reinventing forums for the Native American Flute. Progressive World is the latest in his long list of Autumn's Child releases.

As the CD title hints, this release features elements of progressive world music. Mark Holland is joined by members of the Peter Mayer Group. Peter Mayer himself plays most of the classical guitar on this project.

Mark's writing has long been charming audiences in Saint Louis. He has the ability to give voice to the flute and force you to remember the melody of each and every song. Progressive World is loaded with such songs. There is a sort of 'pop sensibility' to his songs. In other words... he writes great hooks!

Two of my favorite songs though are the extended experimental pieces "Dream Sequence" and "Spheres". Both are roughly nine minute cuts that take the listener into a tranquil dream. These are atmospherical tracks that remind me (in spirit) of the early 70's Tangerine Dream records.

Realistically, Autumn's Child has not made a bad CD. So when I tell you that this may be their best CD to date, that's saying something. Just buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Progressive World/Native American Flute for the Soul.......2002-11-25

Mark Holland continues to explore new and wonderful ways to use the Native American Flute by fusing it's haunting and soulful voice with instruments from around the world. His music pleases the ear and calms the soul. Whether he uses it with western or nonwestern instruments the results are a harmonious blending of world music that is nothing short of brilliant. Mark is among the most talented writers, arrangers, and performers of the contemporary Native flute on the scene today. His music continues to take the Native Flute to new musical dimensions not often achieved by other contemporary NAF artists. He has the wonderful ability to weave the flute in an out of almost every theme, motif, and style one can imagine. Be prepared for something special on this latest release. This CD is wonderfully conceived and delivered by a great Native flute performer. I consider it one of my favorites in an already large collection of Native flute music that includes all of his music released to to date. Mark continues to set a high standard for this emerging genre of music.

4 out of 5 stars Buffy's Best.......2000-05-28

If you haven't heard of Buffy then this is a great starter with a wide selection from her original Vanguard Studio Albums of the 1960s-70s.

You'll take a trip through a variety of genres from her haunting Native North American Sounds, Folk Roots, 70s Orchestrations, Controversial Soundtracks (ie Soldier Blue), Nashville Country and Unreleased Bonus Tracks.

The Ultimate Surprise was to hear a Remastered, Cleaned up version of her European Hit song 'Soldier Blue' from her album She used to wanna be a Ballerina. That alone is wonderful !

3 out of 5 stars Great songs; less than ideal format.......2000-02-14

This compilation album was released by Vanguard after Buffy Sainte-Marie had left the label. Its main appeal for her most ardent fans is the inclusion of two tracks previously not released on CD. Also, the sound quality of "Soldier Blue" is slightly (though only slightly) better than on the "She Used to Wanna be a Ballerina" CD release.

The song selections are less scattershot than Vanguard's two other Buffy Sainte-Marie compilations ("Best of, Vols. 1 & 2"), but Sainte-Marie's 1996 "Up Where We Belong" CD, featuring new recordings of some of her best work, is a more nuanced retrospective.

5 out of 5 stars Golden Ears needs a hearing aid.......2006-08-08

I can only imagine that someone who could write such an aweful review of Amy Hanaialii Gilliom, is either jealous or has never seen her live or never heard her sing Autumn Leaves. She is an incredible singer and ANYTHING you buy of hers will NOT be a disappointment, I assure you that. Beautiful voice and beautiful hawaiian music. This is what you call REAL hawaiian music. All of her stuff!

1 out of 5 stars Avoid all her albums!.......2006-06-19

The popularity of Amy Gilliom is an ongoing mystery to me. Apparently, she was classically trained and started off as a Country singer. She should have stayed that way.

She does have a strong voice with a fairly pretty tone. However, she hasn't a clue how to use her voice. She sings all over the place with little attention to expression and coherence.

Ms. Gilliom needs to learn that singing is not about flash and technique; it is about communicating from one heart to another--at least in this type of music:.

If all of the above seems harsh, I would suggest this: Compare Amy with

Willie K who sings on some of her albums. Note the difference in expressiveness between the two.

Raiatea Helm (a younger singer) who is a far superior singer to Amy.

Genoa Keawe (the legend) who is also way better than Amy.

Nalani Olds (an older singer) who sadly does not get a fraction of the recognition that she deserves.

When you compare you will hear the difference and, I think, agree that Amy just doesn't have it. At least not yet.

5 out of 5 stars This is the voice of Free Men...........2001-11-03

I've had most of these songs on vinyl and they provide me with many wonderful memories. Paul Robeson had an unusual voice: a bass with baritone colorations, huge and powerful, with what can best be described as a mellow urgency. If that description confuses, then you'll just have to get this album and hear for yourself what I mean.
Robeson championed the cause of the working man through his music. Joe Hill is one of my favorites, in which Paul sinks down to the vocal depths with an astounding ease. The Song of the Plains is a rouser, and, if I remember correctly, it's sung in two languages. The Ballad For Americans is here, and it's a classic... and, for me, it's the very definition of America and the great spirit and soul of its people and its greatness. By and By is one of my favorite spirituals, and this is the version I remember. Who sang spirituals with as much richness and depth of feeling as Paul Robeson? Maybe Marian Anderson, whose voice was unique and whose life broke through so many barriers.
This is an album for those who love freedom and the many races who seek it. God bless Paul Robeson for his incredible contribution to humanity.
