Irish traditional musicians have embraced three wind instruments: the tin whistle, the flute, and the uilleann pipes. Light Through the Leaves is a collection of recordings made by Mick Moloney of Irish-American musicians playing these instruments in the late 1970s. The performers include musicians who were born in America such as pipers Tim Britton and Bill Ochs, flautists Mark Roberts and Richard Hughes, and tin whistle player Larry McCullough, and Irish-born immigrants like piper Al Purcell and flautists Noel Rice and Mike Rafferty. All of the selections are played without accompaniment, which is the highest test of the player's art. Each of the musicians acquits himself with aplomb, and the high level of musicianship throughout makes these recordings a delightful example of the variety of traditional music playable on wind instruments. --Michael Simmons
