Amazon.com essential recording

Maria Callas's voice was never noted for its sheer beauty, but she was in her best form for this session and she knew exactly what to do with what she had. She might not make the distraught figure of Leonora rationally credible, but she knows more about acting with her voice than anyone this side of Sir John Gielgud. And she puts Leonora's emotions, her vulnerability, her whole-hearted, self-sacrificial love, squarely before the listener. Herbert von Karajan's conducting brings logical coherence to a work not noted for that quality. In short, this is vintage Callas, at the top of her form in some of the greatest music and some of the most intensely emotional situations ever devised for a soprano. Von Karajan--young and not yet burdened with the mannerisms of his later years, is an ideal partner. The other singers, though dwarfed by Callas, provide substantial support. --Joe McLellan

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a source of consumer surplus........2007-07-26

Don't even think twice, just buy it! Stellar cast exhibiting fearless performances.

I haven't heard the Azucena Barbieri recorded earlier with Milanov & Bjorling that many people prefer over her performance in this one, but here she is superb: her voice is strong and so dark that you really get a sense of Azucena's baleful schema.

Of course, the selling point is Callas. In this recording, she demonstrates just how supremely gifted she is as an artist. There are numerous wonderful surprises in her phrasing throughout that keep you always spellbound by her character.

It's an amazing, essential recording for any opera lover.

5 out of 5 stars A Leonora For All Time.......2006-04-08

I have always considered the Trovatore Leonora to be one of Callas's very greatest roles. Here , less obscured by her undoubted dramatic gifts, we can enjoy the pure musicality of her singing. The timbre is perfect for Leonora - dark, plangent & (apart form at the very top of her register)surpassingly beautiful. The role displays her perfect legato, incredible breath control & accurate coloratura. She also has a wonderful understanding of just how to phrase a Verdian cadenza, quite different from anything she would do in Bellini or Donizetti. You only have to hear her first few phrases to know that this Leonora is an aristocrat. Leontyne Price is undoubtedly another great Leonora, and she too has a voice perfectly suited to the role, but occasionally she mars the vocal line with unmusical cadenzas, appearing more interested in laying out her voice for admiring display, where Callas is more intent on letting us hear Verdi. The rest of the cast is just about as perfect as was possible at the time & a good deal better than anything we could manage today. True, Di Stefano lacks the requisite weight, but he sings with such face, it is readily forgiven. His "Di quella pira" may not have the heroic heft of a Corelli, but he sings "Ah, si ben mio" quite beautifully. Panerai, Barbieri & Zaccaria could hardly be bettered & Karajan was at this time the perfect conductor for the project. He conducts with great style & dash, while at no time apologising for the occasional vulgarities in the score. More modern recordings are uncut & here we have the cuts traditional at the time, but at least we get one verse of Leonora's cabaletta "tu vedrai". The sound has also been remarkably well freshened up in it's present transfer. Unless you really have to have modern stereo digital sound, buy it. And, even if you have another recording, acquire this as well. You won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars The greatest Leonora!.......2004-07-02

I couldn't agree more with the reviews stating that Callas' Leonora is unsurpassed. Björling called this Leonora "sheer perfection". Unbeatable!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2004-06-13

The dream-team Callas-di Stefano comes together once more to record I'll Trovatore! And how beautifully they did it! Herbert von Karajan's conducting is supreme, Callas sings the definite Leonora, di Stefano sounds passionate and loving as Manrico and Barbieri kicks ass as Azucena. To the guy who said that if Callas had Milanov as a rival she'd fall on her face, Callas and Milanov performed at the same time! So there! The best Trovatore ever!

5 out of 5 stars The best Leonora forever.......2004-05-16

Period! Di Stefano sounds surprisingly on fire as the ill-fated Manrico, Barbieri COMMANDS as Azucena and Panerei is a fabulous di Luna. Von Karajan conducts mastefully. Not the only Trovatore but one of the very best!

This collection, whose French title might be translated "Verdi Vocal Rarities," is a unique contribution to the Verdi centennial year. Its 136 selections on eight compact discs offer an in-depth survey of singers who recorded notable Verdi performances during the era of 78-rpm recording. Coincidentally, this period covers, within a few years, the half- century after the composer's death, in 1901. Some of the singers in the earliest cuts--tenor Francesco Tamagno and bass Victor Maurel, for example--had known Verdi and sung for him. Many of the singers will be familiar to connoisseurs of Verdi discography--Enrico Caruso, Boris Christoff, Fedora Barbieri, Ezio Pinza, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Tito Gobbi, Beniamino Gigli, and Jussi Bjoerling, to name a few. Others, such as Frieda Hempel, Emmy Destinn, Martha Modl, Joseph Schwarz, Gino Cigna, and Mattia Battistini, are names you come across in books about opera, but you have heard their voices only if you spend a lot of time with historic recordings. And a lot of performances, including some of the best, are likely to be the work of singers encountered for the first time.

Most of the big moments from Verdi's operas are included--grouped by opera, not by chronological order of recording. There are a few strange omissions; for example, the "Miserere" scene from Il trovatore. But other selections, such as "Ah fors' e lui" and "La donna e mobile," are given in two or three performances--sometimes in French, German, or Russian as well as Italian. Some of the performances are classics; many are mind-boggling.

Some favorite Verdi singers--Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti, among them--are absent because they began recording after the collection's cutoff date. Other problems are mostly related to the dates of the original recordings. The sound is all pre-high-fidelity and sometimes quite primitive, though some remarkable work has been done to optimize the earliest items. The annotations are minimal--mostly the date, venue, and performers in each cut, with pictures of the biggest stars. This decision was probably made to keep the price low, and those who already know most of the arias and ensembles will likely find the tradeoff acceptable. --Joe McLellan

4 out of 5 stars Rare but well-polished Verdi gems........2001-10-21

Classical music enthusiasts will have become aware that EMI have been marketing several boxed sets with a French title containing the word "introuvables". The word suggests that when you open the box you'll find items that are so rare as to be almost unobtainable. It suggests also that their rarity is not due only to age or production limitations, it is also due to the incomparability of their quality.

Few would quibble about the quality of what is to be found in this splendid collection of Verdi "introuvables". You will hear how Emmy Destinn portrayed Aida yearning for her homeland in 1908, and how Elisabeth Schwarzkopf portrayed Violetta intereacting with her lover's father in 1953. You will hear several items duplicated. Francesco Navarini, recorded in 1907 with a piano, makes a stunning Fiesco in the "Simon Boccanegra" prologue, as is not up-staged by the more familiar Alexander Kipnis version which follows.

You might regret that your favourite Verdi record is not here. You'll have opportunities to make comparisons, however. I could never believe that anyone could equal Giuseppe de Luca'a 1930 "O sommo Carlo" from "Ernani, but here I have a chance to hear for the first time how the famous baritone Mattia Battistini did it in 1906.

Keith Hardwick compiled and transferred this collection originally in the late 1980s. He has augmented and transferred that issue onto 8 CDs, and provided the annotations. Full recording details are provided, there are many singer photographs but no singer biographies.

The recording dates range from 1903 to 1953. Sadly, almost all the singers - Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf being a notable exception - are all dead by now. Those of us who have opportunities to hear and collect their work, however, can be grateful that the older we get the better it sounds. Indeed, I have never heard any of the items included here in better transfers. Elsewhere I have given this issue a five star rating. Subsequent hearings have made me aware of a technical matter which may bother some listeners. This set has been transferred from the long playing records on which it was originally issued. Their pristine sound quality has been preserved but also some of the ghostly "swish" that accompanied each revolution.

5 out of 5 stars Great Italian prog with jazz rock flourishes .......2006-09-03

The world of Italian prog really is a great place and this mellow 1975 album certainly adds to the overall quality. In contrast with a lot of prog albums from Italy however, where European classical typically sat in the driver's seat, there are some jazz rock overtones on this album. As such, this album can be neatly lumped with releases by Arti + Mestieri and the late 1976-1977 output of PFM. As a fan of both prog and jazz rock, I enjoyed this album quite a lot although there were tiny moments that sounded just a teeny tiny bit dated. They were far and few between however and did not ruin the listening experience in any way.

The six tracks on the album are pretty short and range from 4'00" to 6'14" - each track is distinct from one another and the six tracks are not arranged in a suite.

Musically, this is largely an instrumental album (about 95%), although there are brief sections where both wordless vocals and vocals (in Italian) are featured. The vocals really are not too bad at all and are typically heavily electronically altered with a lot of echo on them. In terms of instrumentation this is a very keyboard heavy album (e.g. moog, string synthesizer, Hammond organ, acoustic piano, electric piano, clavinet), along with the standard bass guitar, drums, and electric guitar lineup. I think that I also heard the occasional electric sitar bit and a host of percussion instruments are used as well, e.g. tablas, chimes etc.

Like a lot of Italian prog, the ensemble work is fantastic and the use of melodies is unrivaled. All of the musicians are pretty good although there is very little in the way of the breakneck tempos and wildly virtuosic soling that is characteristic of much jazz rock. In fact, I guess it is this property, combined with the abundant use of melodies that places them more fully in the prog camp rather than the jazz rock camp.

Although the production is OK, it is a bit muddy and bass/drum heavy and many of the keyboard instruments are buried deep in the mix. This is unfortunate because the keyboardist is excellent. One other minor drawback is the fact that at 30'48", this album is really, really short. However, I feel that the overall quality of the music more than makes up for the low production values and the brevity.

In summation, I would have to say that this album would make an excellent addition to the Italian prog collection and might also appeal to more open minded jazz rock fans as well. Highly recommended along with stylistically similar Italian albums including Tilt (Arti + Mestieri, 1974), Chocolate Kings (PFM, 1976), and Jet Lag (PFM, 1977).

5 out of 5 stars Ecstatic, Period........2003-06-13

Well, I don't think all of the songs on this CD are great. But you SHOULD have this amazing CD for the last track, Canti e Suoni. I have a huge collection of progressive rocks but there are only a couple of songs I think 'Ecstatic'. One is 'the onlything she needs' by UK (79 Danger money), and 'Canti e Suoni'. Generally I don't buy a CD only for a song or two but this was a true exception. I hardly bother with the other songs on this CD. Canti e Suoni is what I want from this CD. And beautiful album jacket is a bonus. Strongly recommened! ---------Young

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Italian prog rock.......2001-11-03

Il Volo is yet another one of those Italian prog bands that released a couple of albums then went their separate ways. Il Volo was actually a supergroup consisting of some of the best musicians from Italy's pop and prog scene. And while "supergroup" might spell bad news to many people (look at Asia, for example), Il Volo has everything I like so well of the best qualities of prog from the mid 1970s. Two of the members I know for sure came from Formula 3, Alberto Radius and Gabriele Lorenzi. There were also members of Osage Tribe and some other bands I'm not aware of or don't remember. While I only have one Formula 3 album, Sognando e Risognando (1972), it sounds much like PFM and ELP with some experimental passages. Il Volo's Essere o Non Essere, from 1975, which is their second and final release doesn't sound much like the Formula 3 album I have at all. In fact their music tends to be a more funk oriented prog sound that was typical of many bands of the time, like Eela Craig (particularly One Niter) and Goblin (like on Roller). None of the music has elaborate solos, it sounds like a real band effort so each member gets his chance to be heard. The music is really easy to get in to as well. There's often a '70s hi-tech feel to these songs as well, one of the cuts, "Alcune Scene", particularly the string synths, sounds like it should belong on a sci-fi film. The instruments are typical of prog, drums, bass, acoustic guitar, clavinet, electric piano, synthesizers, string synths, and sax (although it sounds more like a Computone Lyricon, which was an electronic wind instrument). Most of the occasional vocals are wordless, so it's mainly instrumental. There's not a bad moment on this album, and I am rather surprised that not everyone likes this album. Certainly it's not particularly complex or challenging, but it's still a truly amazing example of what prog was all about in the 1970s, and is definately right up your alley if you like Goblin's Roller and Eela Craig's One Niter.

5 out of 5 stars Instrumental prog rock from Italy.......2001-05-05

Il Volo was an Italian progressive rock band that released two albums. (This supergroup included former members of Formula 3 and Osage Tribe.) Their music has all the usual keyboard works together with some electric guitar play. This album was their second from 1975 and sounds like a colder and jazzier version of typical Italian symphonic prog rock like PFM, Le orme and Banco. It contains a mainly instrumental work but some fine musicianship ,inventive arrangements and production.

5 out of 5 stars Charming, Delicate Performance.......2003-03-26

"Cenerentola" is Rossini at his best. The music is manic, engaging and funny, and Marriner and his orchestra and cast are up to the challenge without a weak link amongst them.

Agnes Baltsa plays the lead on this album. The chief rival on recording is of course the version with Cecilia Bartoli as Cinderella and Enzo Dara as Don Magnifico. Where Ms. Bartoli is a showman pulling notes out of left field and displaying a triumphant coloratura, Agnes Baltsa sticks to a more dramatically truthful portrayal. Her Cinderella is both thoughtful and forgiving. Where Ms. Bartoli is spectacular, Ms. Baltsa is beautiful. She gives a real characterization to a girl trapped by a dysfunctional family.

Francisco Araiza as the prince is a real treat. He has a good comic touch and a voice that blends tremendously well with Ms. Baltsa's. Mr. Araiza wins out in all aspects in regards to the role of the Prince compared to the other recordings available.

The Duet when Cinderella and the Prince meet is a burst of pure happiness where Araiza and Baltsa actually take the time to match each others coloratura phrasing virtually note for note, instead of showing off individually, which really delivers the full emotional payoff of Rossini's composing. It's as if these two were meant for each other, not because the music has them declare their love through coloratura passages, but because when they do, they're already in perfect synch.

The stand out performance on this album is that of Ruggero Raimondi as Don Magnifico. Truly, this is a magnificent man. I was laughing out loud during his performance. While he has never tackled the role on stage, you would hardly know it. On the other recording his rival is Enzo Dara, who in my opinion is a better Don Magnifico, but Raimondi finds such humor in Rossini's delightful music that it make this a recording well worth owning. His aria about the dignified donkey is worth the price of the CD alone... and he's got three more great songs to come. He takes a few of the songs at a noticably slower pace than Dara, but he gives you a delightful performance during the wait.

A few other things that stand out are the ensemble "Cenerentola, vien qua" which is taken at such a clip that it hardly seems possible. Also, in the ensembles the singers make sure to blend harmonies without showing each other up like on the other available recordings.

Dandini and Alidoro or very capable, Dandini is particularly amusing, and Clorina and Tisbe are hands down the best sisters on recording.

If You follow my advice, buy this recording. It's wonderful.

    5 out of 5 stars magnificent !.......2002-08-13

One of the greatest voices of the 20th Century, Aureliano Pertile was a star tenor at Milan's La Scala during the tenure of Arturo Toscanini, who often called Pertile his favorite tenor.
To quote the liner notes: "Pertile has a place in the history of vocal art as the prototype of a "Toscanini voice". He was the perfect embodiment of all those qualities to which the unrelenting maestro attached the greatest importance: the highest degree of musicality, sensitivity, emotion-laden presentetion and an art of phrasing that was without equal".

The power of his voice is extraordinary and overcomes the fact that these recordings were done in the late 20's and early 30's. The passion of his interpretations is as immediate as if this CD had been of recent vintage.
The two earliest, from 1927, are pure genius: "Quando le sere al placido" from Luisa Miller, and "Ah ! si, ben mio coll'essere" from Il Trovatore.

There's no information on this Austrian CD about how/when these historic recordings were remastered, but they did a good job, as there's less "crackle" than in some I've heard from this era.
Pertile was my favorite tenor when I would listen to Buenos Aires radio as a child, and I was curious how he would sound after all these years, and the answer is, magnificent !

    4 out of 5 stars A Worthy Trovatore.......2006-05-13

I decided to buy a used copy of this half century old Trovatore on the strength of the earlier review posting. I'm certainly glad I did.

First, there is the pleasure of hearing Tebaldi in a role that wasn't central to her repertory. Having heard her Violetta on an early '50s Decca recording of Traviata I was not expecting much in the way of florid singing. I was pleasantly surprised. True, some of the runs are sketchy and the tone isn't always ideally equalized when she goes for the high notes, but Tebaldi isn't far behind the fabled Milanov, a favorite in this role. Tebaldi's italianate timbre is a decided plus. A few days ago I played the first act aria and cabaletta for some friends without any identification. After some puzzled looks, someone commented that whoever it was, she was great and though she sounded like Tebaldi, the florid singing was too good for it to be her. Needless to say, they were all pleasantly surprised.

I think Simionato is simply the finest Azucena on disc - whether here or in the legendary Salzburg broadcast of a few years later.

Del Monaco isn't an intellectual tenor by any stretch of the imagination, but this is elemental, viscerally exciting singing. I'll give up the subtle nuances for a vital, heroic Manrico like this.

Savarese is a competant Di Luna. He's certainly not offensive, but there's not much here to convince the listener he belongs in the company of the great exponents of the role. I have to admit that I think the role's showpiece, "Il balen" is a problem for any interpreter. I think organ grinder every time I hear it.

It's always a pleasure to hear the young Tozzi's richly overtoned voice as Ferrando.

Erede is no Karajan (or Mehta) but he gives us a well routined reading of the score. Finally, the sonics of this 1956 recording are very impressive early vintage stereo. Despite its occasional flaws, I quickly have become very attached to this venerable Trovatore.

    4 out of 5 stars Strangely fascinating!.......2004-01-01

This old Trovatore recording has aspects that would normally make one avoid it. However, I find myself listening to it more and more and actually enjoying it more than other, more popular recordings of this opera.

Mario Del Monaco is, as expected, a heroic Manrico. He rarely sings piano and knows little about elegant phrasing but the sheer vigour and ring of his voice strikes in magnificiently! Only F. Corelli equals Mario in force and exciting high notes. Musically, Corelli is certainly more creative but I've always found Del Monaco's voice more handsome. Tastes differ, though. Del Monaco is particularly thrilling in "mal reggendo, all'aspro assalto", "ah! Si, ben mio" and "Di quella pira" even if he could hold the last note longer in the cabaletta.

The casting of Renata Tebaldi as Leonora is for most opera fans controversial. She is a spinto with little agilty; it's interesting to see what such a voice can offer. Indeed, she barely manages the florid parts and the highest notes sound effortfull. In this part she's nowhere near Caballe, Milanov, Callas or even Price. However, there are other moments that no other soprano in my experience has ever sung so idiomatically. In "mira, di acerbe lagrime" for example, the way she sings those long phrases using her glorious spinto instrument is unique. She firmly grasps each note and the result is intoxicating! Same with Miserere and the proceeding Manrico - Leonora encounter. Dramatically her outbreaks are few. However, Tebaldi was THE FIRST who made me realise that Leonora is a woman in love!

If one can argue about the performances of Tebaldi and Del Monaco, little can be said about Simionato's Acuzena. Along with Barbieri and Cossotto she's one of the best interpreters of this wonderful role, probably Verdi's greatest mezzo part. The weakest link of the cast is Ugo Savarese's routine Conte di Luna. If only Bastianini had joined this recording instead. Tozzi does an OK job as Ferrando. Erede conducts well but nothing really memorable. Decca's early stereo sound certainly impresses; pity that EMI and RCA didn't adopt stereo so early as well.

On the whole, this set won't beat famous Trovatores like Karajan's live performance but it will always attract my attention!

I love any album put out by this wonderful tenor. This is one of my favorites and I play it often. I will be very sad when he stops doing albums, as I think I have most of them now.
