Zydecajun

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The "star" of Louisiana music, the photogenic and energetic Wayne Toups took the unusual step early on of naming his band (and this disc) after the style of music he supposedly invented: Zydecajun. A Cajun accordion player who always wears a headband and uses zydeco rhythms, Toups's real calling card is Cajun-flavored rock. No favorite among musical purists, he is nevertheless a huge crowd pleaser. On this early set, Toups turns in a bayou-tinged version of John Lee Hooker's blues classic "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer," and a charged up cover of the zydeco music classic "Les Zydeco sont pas sal&ecaute;." Guests on this disc include Beausoliel fiddler Michael Doucet and Louisiana slide guitarist Sonny Landreth. --Robert Baird

Although Wayne Toups named his band Zydecajun, his sound has as much Southern rock and blue-eyed soul in it as it does traditional Cajun and zydeco. When he sings in English, as he does on "Oh Louisiana" and "Southern Girls," with its Lynyrd Skynyrd-inspired twin lead guitar solos, he reduces the Cajun quotient to a couple of obligatory accordion fills and comes across as just another singer in a Gulf Coast bar band. But when he sings in French on songs such as "Les Filles de la Ville" and "Tous les Temps en Temps," he lets his accordion lead the band and he creates a rollicking sound that is unmistakably Cajun. The music of Wayne Toups and Zydecajun is not for the purist, but at their best they play a uniquely swampy brand of Louisiana party music. --Michael Simmons

I personally know Wayne. My Son 'n Law is his drummer. Wayne is so hot when it comes to any of his recordings. Last year in Lafayette LA, at a festival there were people Cajun/French/Zydeco, named artists. When they were playing their wasn't hardly any crowd. Then when Wayne started? You couldn't see the end of the gathering. People were dancing, screaming, on top of shoulder's. Wayne never gets the recognition he deserves. It just blows my mind, that everywhere he performs, it's a packed place. His CD's/music, is a great mixture of Zyedeco, Rock, Traditional, and it's hard to not want to tap your feet or get up and dance. I am a big fan. Not because of a relationship, but, because this Man is multi talented and can bring a crowd to their feet. He performs until he's almost exhausted. He gives it his all. I HOPE SOMEDAY HE'LL GET THE RECOGNITION HE DESERVES.

Wyane has done it again with this newest release. If you like his music, you will love this CD. The only thing that might make it better was it were recorded live ! The Supporting musicians are up to the challange to hang with him as he leads them on a Cajun adventure. The piano player picked up a few licks from the Killer himself... Jerry Lee Lewis. Put this in your car CD player, turn up the volume and enjoy the ride anywhere!

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-07-01

This is a wonderful CD. I am lucky enough to live where I can see Wayne Toups in person & I had already bought "Back To The Bayou" at one of his performances several years ago. It was a cassette though, & I liked it so much I had to buy it again on CD. Recently we played it at the beach & even a stranger came up to tell us how much he liked it. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The best Wayne Toups has ever recorded, esp. "Take My Hand".......1999-07-15

Wayne did an excellent job w/ this one, esp. "TAKE MY HAND". The Best

4 out of 5 stars Solid Cajun. One of Toups' Tops.......1999-04-01

Wayne hits it big here. He ventured off into the unknown with his current "Toups" release and the earlier "Fish Out of Water," but on this title,Wayne drives home solid, rockin, cajun you can't help but be happy with. Well worth ordering. It's about as good as Blast from the Bayou. Sure to bring back memories of the Big Mamou.

One of the first and still his greatest album. My comments are these: My wife and I are an older couple but we like to dance and we love Cajun music. In the late 80's we lived in San Antonio, Texas. For several years, at that time, Wayne Toups and Zydecajun would come and play their kind of Louisiana music at the Cajun Festival. The festival was held in a small country town called Helotis, Texas. The event attracted hundreds to a hugh outdoor dance and beer hall called Floore Country Store. Wayne and his boys played great music to dance to but what really made those memories last until this day is how LONG they played each piece of music. Every song had us all dancing for so long that we were both totally exhausted AND cheering--the more the crowd cheered, the longer Wayne and the band would play---they drew energy from us and we from them. An unforgettable experience. Thanks, Wayne, for the indelible memories, the fine showmanship and, most of all, those long-lasting song to dance to.

4 out of 5 stars for the price it is agreat CD.......2000-11-01

I heard Wayne Toups and the Zydecajuns perform most of the music on this CD live at a Franco-American festival. I had never heard of him before except from my firends who like "Pure" Cajun music. (Whatever THAT is). They thought that his style was less than wonderful. Well now, that is simply a matter of opinion, eh? He is credited, mostly by himself, for having created this style of Zydecajun music. The best description seems to be that he crosses some bluesy and latin influences with the more traditional Cajun sounds and beats. The combination is fantastic to dance to, and great fun! Besides his own pure joy and talent, the additional musicians on this CD make the price of purchase well worth it. Rather than fault him for recording "One scotch, one burbon, one beer", I'd say that this cut alone is worth the cost of the CD.
