5 out of 5 stars Tuneful power ballads.......2007-07-10

The UK singer Tony Christie first made the charts in 1971. With his powerful voice and choice of good tunes, he falls into the Tom Jones/Engelbert Humperdinck category of power balladeer.

If not quite country, his early songs all had an American Western flavour, like the dramatic ballad Las Vegas, the tragic story song I Did What I Did For Maria and the flowing Is This The Way To Amarillo which was a UK hit again in 2005.

His minor hits from the 1970s like Avenues And Alleyways are still quite enjoyable too. In 1978 Christie returned with the beautiful ballad On This Night Of A Thousand Stars from the original studio soundtrack to Evita. The sequence of hits is not strictly chronological, but they do fit into a pattern of the 1970s stuff first and the very latest music last.

This collection also contains his more than adequate interpretations of classic songs from that era such as Solitaire, Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast, Drift Away, Feelings, I'm Not In Love and Love Hurts.

If you like dramatic and tuneful power ballads, you'll find much to enjoy in the work of Tony Christie. His tuneful songs have stood the test of time surprisingly well.

4 out of 5 stars Tony christie is Smoothe.......2005-08-03

Some of the songs are excellent but some of the remakes are a little on the substandard side, compared to the originals of course. All in all Christie has a great voice, easy to listen to

5 out of 5 stars The seventies hits.......2005-05-03

Tony is a British singer who, for a long time, struggled to make a significant impact in his own country. He was far more popular in mainland Europe, especially Spain, where he eventually set up home.

As far as his UK chart history goes, he began in 1971 with Las Vegas, which just missed the top twenty. He then made number two with I did what I did for Maria. However, his third hit of 1971, Is this the way to Amarillo (a song written by Neil Sedaka), only just made the UK top twenty although it was number one in several European countries. Some people have joked that Brits bought the record when they visited Spain rather than buying it at home, but Tony's subsequent career suggests this is not so. In any event, Tony never actually got to Amarillo back then.

After those three hits, Tony had two minor UK hits in the seventies - Avenues and alleyways (originally from the TV series The protectors, the song was also used in a movie, Love honor and obey) in 1973 and Drive safely darling in 1976. He then disappeared completely from the UK charts for many years.

Comedian Peter Kay used one of his old songs (Is this the way to Amarillo) in Phoenix nights. The song was given a further boost when released as a UK charity single in 2005. Suddenly, the song that the British public had given a lukewarm response to in 1971 was being played everywhere and gave Tony his first UK number one hit. Everybody wanted to know about Amarillo and the Texan city got plenty of enquiries from Brits. Tony finally made that trip to Amarillo. Whether the woman he originally sang about is still waiting for him, I doubt as thirty-four years have passed since he first asked the question.

This compilation contains a selection of Tony's seventies recordings including all of his UK hits from the period. Apart from his own hits, you can hear Tony's covers of Solitaire (a Neil Sedaka song that became a UK hit for both the Carpenters and Andy Williams), Baby I'm a want you (Bread), Drift away (Dobie Gray), Feelings (Morris Albert), I'm not in love (10 cc) and Love hurts (first recorded by the Everly Brothers though their version was not released as a single).

Tony sounds a bit like Tom Jones, whose career also revived in the late nineties. If you enjoy the music of Tom Jones, give Tony a chance.

Tony Christie... What more is there to say? I discovered his singing talents entirely by accident... Big Thanks to Gary for downloading the 'wrong track' from the Internet and enriching the Firlon "on hold" music..

Loved by the likes of Peter Kay of Phoenix Nights.. and Gary N..
Loathed by the likes of Peril Cheryl of Shepherd Bush Nights

A nice hello to Kurt, Lindy, Willy and Fred..
and other TC fans worldwide..

5 out of 5 stars Old world, old school, all class.......2003-10-05

This is perhaps my single favorite cd in my entire collection. Tony Christie is a little known talent in the United States, but by god he should be. Christies music will take you back to a time when vocal talent, musical arrangement, larger than life sound, and sheer showmanship still meant something. Armed with a voice that in range and depth that could rival your Tony Bennetts and Sinatras, Tony Christie has amassed a beautiful body of work that has led him to a devoted cult following in Europe, and pockets of the U.S. My experience began with the single "Las Vegas", a eulogy of a damned mans ongoing life at the hands of the city of sin. A personal favorite is "Avenues and Allyways", a sort of street ballad and warning to those who work and play in neighborhoods filled with dangerous gangster types who operate outside of the light and law. Other significant trademarks of Christie are "Is This the Way To Amarillo?"(about a love sick man going to the love of his life), and "I Did What I Did For Maria"( a posibble tragic sequel to I.T.T.W.T.A.?). Every song on this disc is highly enjoyable. This upbeat music is perfectly suitable to take the edge off of your daily commute, and the perfect accessory to your best suit, finest cufflinks, nice cigar, a cadillac, and a night on the town. Burn your hip hop, and boy band music, and go back to when real men sang songs and told storys of real triumph, true love, heartfelt moments, and the things a man has to do whether he likes it or not. Enjoy, and spread the word.

5 out of 5 stars Great vocal pop.......2002-10-10

Tony Christie had sevral big hits on the UK charts in the early 1970s and also appears on the original recording of Rice/Webber's Evita album from 1975. With his big booming voice and power ballads he mined a similar vein as Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck. This is an excellent, value-for-money collection of his greatest hits plus some covers of popular songs from the seventies, like Home Lovin' Man, You've Lost That loving Feeling, Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast, I'm Not In Love and The Way We Were. My favorites include the powerful lament about gambling called Las Vegas, the brilliant Avenues and Alleyways and the dramatic tale of revenge called I Did What I Did For Maria that was a UK top ten for him in 1971, and really sounds more like a genuine rock `n roll song than anything else. Other hits that I remember include (Is This The Way To) Amarillo and Don't Go Down To Reno, but these sound a bit formulaic and unoriginal. Only one track from the Evita album is included: On This Night Of A Thousand Stars, but it's real classy and far better than Jimmy Nail's version on the Soundtrack album to the Evita movie. Christie's good taste in material, versatile voice and professionalism lift him above many contemporary easy-listening or MoR balladeers. This album will please his fans and one hopes that fans of say, Michael Bolton and Andrea Boticelli, would discover this great but obscure vocalist.

5 out of 5 stars Essential CD for easy listening fans.......2001-07-29

As a best of collection, I rate this CD as an equal to Sinatra, Tom Jones and any other male easy listening singers of the 70s. Tony Christie had hit records from 1970-76 and continues to record into this decade, even scoring a UK and European top ten hit in 1999 with Walk Like A Panther. This CD covers his 70s peak: his soaring vocals, not unlike Tom Jones, stamped his authority over Is This The Way To Amarillo, I Did What I Did For Maria, Don't Go Down To Reno and over a dozen others. My personal favourite is Avenues And Alleyways, a gloriously over-the-top epic. What makes Christie more listenable than most other Vegas-style big-voiced balladeers is the soulfulness of his vocals. He really commits himself to each song.

4 out of 5 stars I`ve been looking for some of these tunes for a long time.......1999-03-24

Do you remember "Is this the way to Amarillo" and "Dont go down to Reno" ? Two hits in Scandinavia from the early seventy`s.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the nineties.......2003-12-30

One should consider that this CD is compiled by record firms and not by the singer. Compare the other one million compilations of his work, terrible work has been done, mostly without Tony's knowing. But the songs are okay, and this is what counts.

1 out of 5 stars Poor.......2001-12-04

If only I'd realized that this CD is Tony Christie re-recording his best songs in a trashy "Europop" style. It sounds like a CD of cheap covers, not much resemblance to the Tony Christie original versions that I remember. Stay away from this CD and buy "The Very Best of Tony Christie" instead (ASIN: B00000DB0C). Sorry Tony, but if it ain't broke don't fix it!
