About the Artist
John Kruth is a multi-instumentalist known mostly as a folk/rock singer/songwriter (he's recorded for independent folk labels Flying Fish and Gadfly). John Kruth is also a journalist, author, and music historian whose oeuvre includes Bright Moments, a biography of idiosyncratic jazz saxophonist Rahsaan Roland Kirk. - Martin Stillion
Product Description
What a fun CD! Originally released in 1995 on San Francisco's Weasel Disc, this hard-to-find little gem has been reissued by Milwaukee's Internal Combustion label, and is well worth tracking down. On this, his first all-instrumental disc, Kruth serves up a tasty gumbo of folk, experimental jazz, hip-hop, and world beat with a healthy dose of lunacy, prominently featuring his cherry red 1957 Fender Mandocaster (tuned to ADF#A, if you're keeping score). The fact that the disc is dedicated to both avant-garde jazz trumpeter Don Cherry and the Carnatic mandolin maestro U Srinivas should give you some idea of what you're in for. "Karmachanic," the leadoff number, has layered electric and acoustic mandolin parts that elevate it above the ordinary. "Wabash Cannibal" takes the train-tune idiom for a wild ride, with defiantly out-of-tune Mandocaster licks and some great sax from Jason Todd-whose playing, in fact, is featured just as prominently as Kruth's on most of the tracks. There's a wicked turntable scratch groove from Malcolm of Citizen King on "Bertha Cool," and the weirdest Rolling Stones cover of the millennium has to be Kruth's free-jazz take on "Lady Jane," which he subtitles the "Brian Jones ghost dance mix" in honor of Jagger & Co.'s late guitarist. "Midnight Hora," once again, is uniquely voiced: you won't hear tablas and tin whistle backing up an electric mandolin every day. There's more than a bit of New Orleans on "Parisha," while "Crazy Maker" is sort of a Wes-Montgomery-meets-John-Zorn-in-the-Twilight- Zone thing: Kruth plays an insistent Mandocaster theme in double stops using an alternate tuning based on major sevenths and tritones (either that or he multitracked it), while Todd and the rhythm section riff like a wrecking crew. As if that weren't enough, "Weeping Statues" and "Mary Mandolin" are both haunting waltzes that lend a bittersweet touch to the proceedings. Kruth has said this may be his best CD, and who am I to disagree? - Martin Stillion

Album Description
On this debut album from Kentucky born BLACK STONE CHERRY you can hear their influences including Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Black Sabbath, but also a heavy side touching more in a Black Label Society vein. The track "Lonely Train" is gaining traction at radio. The track is produced by Richard Young of the Kentucky Headhunters, who is also the father of drummer John Fred Young. With songs about moonshine smuggling, rain wizards and women, how can you go wrong?
Customer Reviews:
Wow.......2007-08-05
A friend online recommended this one, and I was blown away. The sound is like a heavier version of Skynyrd, and that's a good thing. It's southern rock with an edge. The lyrics can be a bit goofy at times, but not enough to interfere with some fantastic music. The guitars drive; the bass player is all over the place, and the drums set a steady but interesting beat.
Black Stone Cherry is exactly what rock music needs right now. I look forward to their future work.
Black Stone Cherry - Get this!!.......2007-07-30
FINALLY! some down and dirty, funky, southern fried, slap your face rock-n-roll by some good ole Kentucky boys with long hair and porkchops. Do i hear and Moog organ and Hand claps in "Rollin on"??? Forget the Ballads, it aint on this CD! Its time to drop the tailgate on your pickup truck, open the cooler, and rock on!! The only thing this CD is missing is some COWBELL!!
Southern rock + modern rock = BSC.......2007-07-26
I'm not big on submitting reviews, but this is the first album that has motivated to do so in a long time. I've always been a fan of alternative/modern rock/metal and --being from Louisiana -- those Southern-infused modern rock bands such as Blind Melon and Kings of Leon. But I have say that THIS is the type of music I've really been waiting for -- combining the aggressive rhythms and energy of modern rock with traditional Southern influences like as The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet and the like.
What's interesting is that the first single I heard from BSC, Lonely Train, did not lure me in as much as the other songs on this album, such as Rain Wizard (my personal favorite), Backwoods Gold, Maybe Someday and Rollin' On (I love the line about Merle Haggard "singing me back home"). Had I not run across an iTunes iMix that included this band, I might have missed them all together. Let's just say I'm very glad that didn't happen.
If you love Southern rock and modern rock, this is the album for you. Guaranteed.
Rocks Right Out of the Gate.......2007-05-29
Terrific debut that kicks from beginning to end.
There's something both new and familiar about their sound; influences definitely worn on their sleeves but a great modern edge too.
These guys have written a very mature sounding album, full of great hooks, melodies and a monster wall of guitars.
Early highlights for me include 'Maybe Someday' and 'Lonely Train' but you could pick this album up at any point and find a killer track.
Production-wise, it's nice and straightforward; you get drums, bass, guitars and vocals - and lots of 'em. Great mix, very direct and sounds like something that could be really great live.
I hope there's lots more like this in them.
Highly recommended.
Great debut CD! .......2007-05-26
I heard the 'Lonely Train' song on the radio so I decided to pick this up and man, I havent taken it out of my CD player since! Great riffs, lyrics, the whole package. Sounds rather raw, but thats how rock and roll is supposed to sound. Reminds me of a Southern-Fried Black Sabbath, or a heavier Pride and Glory. If your looking for a fresh sounding, southern flavored metal CD and your as tired as I am by all these 'musicians' that can't play a note to save their life, then grab this CD and CRANK! Fans of Black Label Society, Corriosion of Conformity and any amped up southern rock will love this.

this aint got no swing.......2006-09-23
HORRIBLE!!!
They do NOT do swing anywhere on this wretchid turd of an album. It is a way lame Marylin Manson sound alike, with sound effects, grungs guitars, bad vocals, incomprehensible lyrics. Gone are the horns and big band swing sound. I pad a dollar and I want my money back. It is that BAD!!!
This Was A Pretty Good cd.......2005-03-06
CPD is one of my favorite jazz groups, i like thier style and everything, i knew they were good when i first listened to Suite Zoot Riot. I loike most of thier songs on this cd. espicialy Diamond Light Boogie. others I Like Are/ God Is A Spider, Swingin' With Tiger Woods, Soul Cadillac, Irish Whisky & Bleeding Ceremony. Good Songs.

It's a cyberdelic world of jet boys and tiger girls........2004-02-04
Although they were partially responsible for reviving the swing craze back in the late 90's, The Cherry Poppin' Daddies were versatile in their musical craftsmanship. The band's 2000 CD, "Soul Caddy," proves this. Instead of capitalizing on the hits of 1997's "Zoot Suit Riot," the group concocted a sonic cornucopia of many musical genres. "Swingin' with Tiger Woods" and "So Long Toots" are the only authentic swing tracks on the album, and both of them greatly glisten like a martini glass. "The Saddest Thing I Know" offers record buyers a sampling of smooth jazz. "Soul Cadillac," with its synthetic organ and sliding trumpets, is a carefree dance tune where frontman Steve Perry plays a 1950's teen heartthrob. "Stay, Don't Just Stay" also evokes the feel of that decade, for the track is set in a perfect suburban neighborhood complete with a dog and a white picket fence. "My Mistake" is an electric mix of techno, pop, and 1970's funk. The ska track, "End of the Night," is interesting; here, Perry is trying to reconnect with his estranged father, who he had first introduced as an abusive alcoholic in "Drunk Daddy." The infectious "Diamond Light Boogie" brings forth the futuristic, bubblegum groove of a sci-fi B-movie. "God is a Spider" is a bizarre and disturbing track about suicide; the song incorporates blaring trumpets with hard rock guitars, and the rhythm scurries like the legs of a centipede. "Grand Mal" is an offering of alternative, acoustic rock. The lyrics of this particular tune are absurd as they involve a girl who hears banjos when seeing her boyfriend naked. "Irish Whiskey" is a bittersweet punk anthem about friendship and sacrifice. "Bleeding Ceremony" is probably the strangest track of all. It graphically unveils the private pains of self-mutilation while teetering to the brink of full-blown nu metal. Fans who had become accustomed to the Cherry Poppin' Daddies' swing sound may be turned off by this track, since it seems far too radical for the band to travel this route.
Overall, "Soul Caddy" is excellent in its execution. Not only did the Cherry Poppin' Daddies retain the rhythms of "Zoot Suit Riot," but they also expanded their sound into new territories by, ironically, diving into the box of nostalgia.
Incredible.......2003-08-31
I am not an experienced swinger. I heard the first couple of songs about a year ago (they were "Zoot Suit Riot", "Drunk Daddy" and "Master & Slave" from CPD) but now I listen to swing music throughout my free time.
I loved Zoot Suit Riot, though it contained only swing songs. I am a lot more satisfied with Soul Caddy, because it comes with a very wide variety of songs from punk rock (Irish Whiskey, God Is a Spider) through classic swingers, (So Long, Toots!, Big Swing) a tender love song (Saddest Thing I Know) rock & roll (Diamond Light Boogie) to an even metal-like song with very negative lyrics (Bleeding Ceremony). By the way the afore mentioned God Is A Spider is one of the best numbers I have ever heard!
This album is colorful, an exciting listening. Its only problem is that it's way too short for my taste. I suggest you to give it a try.
One of my all time favorite Cds........2003-07-20
There are so many great songs on this CD. I just keep listening over and over. Good thing CDs don't wear out!

Interesting..........2006-08-24
Cherry Poppin' Daddies first album and all I can say is funk. Yes there are some swing songs, but the album leens more towards funk. The only swing songs on here are the ones on their greatest hits album 'Zoot Suit Riot.' Overall the album is good, if you are open minded and curious seeing where the Cherry Poppin' Daddies came from. Yes the lyrics are sexual and comical, but with the music they play it fits right.
Sounds like: Royal Noise Brigade, Aquabats, Reel Big Fish
One of the best albums ever........2004-05-17
I don't know how many hundreds of times I have listened to the album and it still holds up as one of my favorites. The first time I heard any of their songs was a live performance at Speedy O' Tubs in Bellingham, Washington (probably 1990 or 1991). This is an incredible band and as great as this album is the Daddies are even better live. One thing though, this is not a pure Swing style album, it is more a cross between swing, punk and rock, add to that some incredible lyrics from Steve Perry and you end up with "Ferociously Stoned." If you are a fan of pure Swing you will probably be disappointed by parts of the album but if you are a fan of really good music that combines various styles and doesn't follow some boring formula then this is for you. While some are at times offended by some of the lyrics I find them to be very honest and often humorous, you really come away understanding just how disturbed Steve Perry's childhood must have been after listening to "Drunk Daddy". Russ Meyer fans will especially enjoy "Flovilla Thatch vs. the Virile Garbage Man." This CD deserves a place in any true music lover's collection.
if I could have only on cd.............2001-12-09
This would be it.... I bought my original copy at one of their shows in bellingham,Wa.... All I can say is... if you don't own it yet... spend the money...
Greatest Album Ever.......2001-07-10
How can anyone knock this album. it is only the greatest album recorded by any artist. i mean the funky groves of Diabolic Tastemaker and Dirty Mutha Fuzz (my personal favourite) plus the swing tunes of Drunk Daddy and Master and Slave make this THE best CD. of course some people are adverse to the lyrics in the songs, but i say you guys are just soft. the lyrics rule, and the songs are even better. so all you CPD haters, get lost and all you CPD lover embrace this CD as their personal best achievement.
EVERY SONG ON FEROCIOUSLY STONED IS EXELLENT!.......1999-09-07
EVERY SONG ON FEROCIOUSLY STONED IS EXELLENT!
The Cherry Poppin' Daddies are fireing up another album soon, tenatively titled "Soul Caddilac". Will it be a swing record like ZSR was? Sort of. Swing has always been a part of CPD's music. Will it be like "Ferociously Stoned"? Sort of.
Everyone must realize that ZSR is a collection of "swingin hits" and is a collection of songs from earler CD's. Zoot Suit Riot does not indicate the extent of the band's music, or the scope of their style! (Look for a twist of soul on the new album.)
The only thing one can expect when hearing a CPD album for the first time is: some songs will be rock/swing/punk/power pop or whatever CPD decides to do.
Bottom line: CPD does what they have ALWAYS done, and that is to make Great albums. Accept the Daddies for what they are. Order Ferociously Stoned, and all the other CPD albums and expect only one thing: excellent music.

A Lost Indiepop Gem!.......2006-09-10
Like, OMG! Why had I never heard of this band before?! If you're a fan of C-86 bands, Brit Indiepop or twee in general, you will LOVE this. Just perfect boy pop songs with nice variations on catchy jangle, eighties style (but without those dated angular rhythms). Think Shop Assistants (who they shared a split debut flexi with), Talulah Gosh, maybe a little Razorcuts. A touch of Orange Juice, etc. They were a Subway band (Flatmates!). This CD compiles tracks from their various singles, Eps and albums. I'm too lazy to go on. If you like all or most of the bands I mentioned, you will dig this for sure.

Cherry Poppin' Daddies have been tagged as a retro act, and that's selling the band short. Sure, the boys found their opening into the mainstream via the lounge lizard fad of the mid-'90s, but the band has found an answer to the age-old question "So what else do you do?" The answer is Soul Caddy, the Eugene, Oregon-based octet's follow-up to its breakthrough Zoot Suit Riot and a much more diverse release at that. The opening cut, "Diamond Light Boogie," keeps swing on the brain as the band takes a foray into glam-rock territory. "Grand Mal" is a nice exercise in acoustic folk rock with enough heart to make it both fresh and refreshing. "My Mistake" mixes their punchy horns with skittery percussion, giving the track a mad rush of flavor. And, yes, the band still knows how to swing like Prima and jive like Armstrong.--Jason Josephes
Customer Reviews:
Not as swingy as they used to be.......2001-12-14
It's angrier, with a departure from their usual swing which I found rather disappointing since I was waiting for this CD for a while. It just seems like they're in a transition stage when listening to this CD, just wondering what their next CD would sound like.
Well Worth It!.......2001-10-24
Well, my fiance bought me Soul Caddy after I raved about Zoot Siut Riot, and it was well worth his money! This is a wonderful CD, although not like Zoot Suit Riot in the respect that the lyrics are more angry and low, while ZSR is more perverse. The swing/ska mix in this CD is awesome! Check out track eleven (I think), Bleeding Ceremony. It is a great track!
I don't give 5 stars easily..........2001-07-30
Damn. I love this CD. I like swing, and really enjoyed Zoot Suit Riot (not 5 stars mind you) so I bought Soul Caddy for another fix. It was like ordering a big mac and coke and getting an aged NY Strip cooked medium rare with cabernet! Who the HELL are these guys and what the HELL is going on with the state of pop music today that these guys could be laboring in relative obscurity. One of the most eclictic, original but still entirely palatable albums going. BUY IT if you like ska, swing, soul, whatever.
Fame pushes out tru Daddies sound..........2001-07-29
I am a long time Daddies fan. I remember them from The Roseland in 89'. Ive followed their path from a ska-punk band from Eugene to Soul Caddy. I personally disliked the swing sound they produced and fell first and foremost in love with the band's punk, neolounge "portland" sound. I expected Soul Caddy to reflect and upstand their past accomplishments such as Rapid City Muscle Car and Kids onthe Street. However it seems the Daddies have finally cahsed in. With songs like "Swingin' with Tiger Woods" they prove just how their non comformised ways from the past have been squelched by media and money. I have debated many times weither an artisit can ruin a song they wrote themsleves...the answer to this debate comes int he song Irish Whiskey, origninally released in the 96' album Kids on the Street. Their "new" version is dry of all previous passion and artform. Although the band did stick to Mojo Records the entire sound quality has been smoothed out so that you can no longer hear into the depths of Steve Perrys soul. You can listen and say to yourself "this sounds like Portland" instead it sounds like any other track from LA. SAD SAD SAD! The daddies have lost their strive to push the limits and try odd cuts and irregualr solos, instead its predictible and by the book. For hardocre CPD fans, dont buy it..it will make you cry as it did me. I miss the old school sound of the Daddies I knew and loved so well. Try Rapid City muscle car for a real look in to the DAddies talent. Untill hten I can only hope for an eye oponer event to help the Daddies realize just how much they have lost
Just plain awesome..........2001-04-29
I love CPD. I have both Ferociously Stoned and Zoot Suit Riot. I love the punk/ska/rock sound of FS and the swingin' sounds of ZSR. I bought Soul Caddy on a whim. I was pleasently surprised when I got home. I love every song on the album. It is definitely one of my all time favorite CDs (that's huge, trust me, I have a very varied taste...out of a capella, classic, rock, swing, metal/rap ;) )
Buy it if you don't have it. It provides two swingin' songs and expansions beyond that. CPD is a lot deeper than swing (they never considered themselves as a swing band) and provides tasteful arrangements with superior lyrics. Excellent buy.

Album Description

Electric mandolin lunacy.......2001-05-03
What a fun CD! Originally released in 1995 on San Francisco's Weasel Disc, this hard-to-find little gem has been reissued by Milwaukee's Internal Combustion label, and is well worth tracking down. Known mostly as a quirky folk/rock singer/songwriter (he's recorded for independent folk labels Flying Fish and Gadfly), John Kruth is also a journalist, author, and music historian whose oeuvre includes Bright Moments, a biography of idiosyncratic jazz saxophonist Rahsaan Roland Kirk. "Karmachanic," the leadoff number, follows a fairly conventional AABB 16-bar folk structure, but a number of layered electric and acoustic mandolin parts elevate it above the ordinary. "Wabash Cannibal" takes the train-tune idiom for a wild ride, with defiantly out-of-tune Mandocaster licks and some great sax from Jason Todd-whose playing, in fact, is featured just as prominently as Kruth's on most of the tracks. Kruth has said this may be his best CD, and who am I to disagree?
rockin good time.......2000-12-08
The Cherry Electric consistantly rates on my all time good time album list. It is wondrfully innovative, genre bending music -- incorporating classic and acid jazz, eastern/indian sounds, african ala King Sunny Ade, rock and roll and folk. This mess is all packaged together in a way that is immediately understandable and makes you want to tap your feet or run around your house a few times. you can't go wrong to buy this album.
Love that electric cherry!.......2000-07-14
John Kruth is magic. It's hard to describe the type of music he plays on this CD. It's folksy-pop with splashes of ethnic color and alternative flair with a hint of jazzy rock. Beatnik comes to mind also... Sound confusing? It isn't. The melodies move like a warm breeze as in Kruth's homage to Brian Jones in 'Lady Jane'. The breeze changes to dust devil in 'Karmachanic' (brilliant), and in 'Wabash Cannibal' (the wordplay in the title, mirrors the mandolin-play in the song). It's impossible to keep your body still while listening, the rhythm literally hugs you in each song. The multitalented Kruth plays mandolin (wonderfully),harmonica, flute and several other instruments. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates beautiful, playful music.

Album Description
