5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-04-29

I was drawn to this singer by the song featured in Final Fantasy VIII (which is an excellent game for those of you who haven't played) and I just loved this CD. I strongly suggest it to anyone!

4 out of 5 stars Mellow.Subtle.Country Folk?.......2001-09-27

I was a bit surprised at this one. It is very easy to dismiss this one as MOR/Folk etc..but the more I listen to it the more it grows on me..almost like Jagger/Stones doing a bit of country music ie.,Let it Bleed era. Very pretty songs as always..plus the disco/tabla Indian flavored number w/ her daughter gurgling etc. Cute sounding kid! Not my favorite but always a cut above anything else out there. Sting..watch your back as far as Pop diversity..this girl is on the prowl! Still highly recommended!

I bought this album about a year ago and I still play it very frequently! The thing is, you just won't get fed up of listening to her records! Her techniques and versatility are stunning! Track no.1 (Love Life) is very Maniac Street Preachers! It's great and is certainly a pleasure to listen to! Song no.2 (Face)is definitely the best! Her voice is brilliant, and the track won the Best Lyrics Award last year! The 3rd track (Sex Commandments), is again, performed with a different style. The song is wicked and somehow beautifully morbid! It was selelcted as one of the best 10 records in Hong Kong last year! Trust me, the first 3 tracks on the album are enough to satisfy...The front cover of the album is stunning, take a look and you will know why! To me, listenning to her songs is a whole new experience, and I am definitely looking forward to enjoy her upcoming works! EXCELLENT!

5 out of 5 stars Faye Wong is The Best Asian Artist! [Chang Yau(scenic tour)].......2000-02-07

This album is undoubtly one of the best Faye Wong albums ever. The new album 'Only Love Strangers' is ground breaking but this is a classic. The first track 'Love Life' is arranged very unusally with electronic hip hop rock and the talented voices of Faye wong vocals. The only love ballad, which is rather strange for Faye Wong and espeacially canto pop is 'Red Bean' or 'Constant Returns' on the cantonese 3 track bonus disc. 'Red Bean' follows the genre of 'Its a Date' and 'I don't want that Either' on Faye's previous albums. Its better than the formers but this track is especially emotional with the Lin Xi's lyrics. The track 'Fly' is refreshing to listen to. 'Little Genius' is rather specatcular with its syntesis arrangement. I love 'Love Boundary' on teh bonus disc its very mystic and trip-hip- hop rock and very much like the track 'Mystic Road ' on Faye's 95 album Di-Dar. 'Childhood' is wriiten by Faye Wong and so is 'Love Life. 'Childhood(tong)' features Faye's daughters Tong's voice and is a dance track. Overall this is a fantastic album like no other canto pop album and unlike any other asian artist. MUST BUY for fans and alike and a great intorduction to Faye's Music.

4 out of 5 stars Faye-bled.......2006-03-02

As a Fayenatic I am terribly biased towards this album, the first five songs on Fable are superb, they tell a transitional tale of Buddism & Cinderella. The first five are some of Faye's best compostions to date! The three songs following Faye's compostion are unfortuenely some of the worst Faye songs ever! Following those disasterous songs comes "Goodbye Firefly" which sounds like a theme to a James Bond flick and "Book of Exhilration" a softy ballad nothing too extraordinary that was sadly pushed to the top of the charts because of a rumor about Faye & her then boyfriend Nick Tse.

As a singer in a very strict industry it's hard to put an all alternative album out there and succeed. It's almost like she's torn between what she really wants to do and what the masses & industry push her to do.

Someone remarked on another review that Fable was the first album that Faye Wong wrote lyrics to her songs. That is miss information. Faye did not write any lyrics on this album. Faye's lyricist Lin Xi wrote the lyrics to tracks 1 - 5 and Faye composed them. Also these tracks are not the first for Faye to compose, her first composition/lyric writing was in a previous album almost 10 years before Fable.

I give it a 4 out of five because of Faye's brilliant compositions & Goodbye Firefly.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best work from Faye.......2005-10-29

The first time I listened to this album, I thought, weird, it just plain weird. And because of that it ended up collecting dust on my shelf for weeks/months. Then one day I decided to go through my collection and listen to songs I don't listen to regularly (sometimes u just wish there were more songs to listen to!), I picked it up and and gave it another try. And funny that I was hooked istantly. This album sounds different, but it really have a unique style to it. And the way the instruments work with faye's voice is flawless! I especially enjoy the first four tracks, they also work really well with eachother. Definitely a must have for all faye fans and non-fans alike.

4 out of 5 stars Still listening to it!.......2005-01-27

I bought this after going to live in Shanghai for a couple years. I loved it when it came out and am listening to it now...great!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect, New Faye.......2005-01-22

Faye is my favourite singer, and this CD is one of her best albums. Maybe the lyrics are not so charming to English people, but you can feel them with Faye's magical voice.

4 out of 5 stars Multicolour Faye.......2004-12-07

As the first album in which Faye Wong wrote lyrics for her songs, it can be said that "Fable" was a new approach for the singer. This album was a little different in style and sound in comparison to her previous albums, but Faye's beautiful, clear voice marks the album as her own. I can't comment on the lyrical value of the album, as I'm not a native speaker of Cantonese or Mandarin, but the intrumental quality is relatively good and, in my opinion, an improvement as a whole from her previous albums.

4 out of 5 stars the chinese cocteau.......2007-01-30

I have been a huge fan of the cocteau twins since the beginning. I thought i owned just about everything they had out. When they broke up i started following robin guthries career, his solo work is like an instrumental cocteau twins. I had recently found out they had collaberated with faye wong, (she is huge in china!) She is probably the only singer that can mimic elizabeth frasers lovely voice. THis import cd is very pricey, but if you are a huge cocteau fan, its a must. THe cocteau twins only produce two tracks on this album. One track is an original and the other is a remake of a cocteau b-side. She sings in manderin, which few will understand what she is singing. But for true cocteau fans, that doesnt matter because elizabeth fraser sings in her own language, that few people understand. The rest of the album has a big cocteau feel and is pretty good to. Go ahead and give her a try.

5 out of 5 stars Addition to A music fan's review.......2003-12-07

The title listed here is wrong. "Red Bean" actually is the mandarin version title of this song.

And Abby, you can forget about the lyric. The lyricist, Lam Je (in cantonese) or Lin Xi (in mandarin), is a god of lyrics, and is a lyric machine. I think he writes at least 200 songs per year. But Pay Back's lyric is below average in my opinion, Red Bean's is much better.

And to everyone,

People, ya have to know that we (people in HK or TW) don't have much leisure activities, at weekends we go to Karaoke. So, the purpose of the third song is to SING ALONG. :)

5 out of 5 stars answer to Abby Laughlin's question.......2003-12-05

The second song is sung in Cantonese (a Chinese dialect used in Hong Kong and southern China). The Chinese title of the song is "Shang Wan" which literally means "pay back".

5 out of 5 stars Let Me Tell You A Story..........2003-09-14

Years ago, I met a girl over the internet. She was very sweet, and we became close friends.

In January of this year (2003) we became closer, and became romantically involved. We were very happy, making plans to meet someday, and we stayed up late talking to one another. One night, I was just so happy, I started listening to "Eyes on Me," one of my favorite songs. For some reason, I began typing randoms lyrics from it to this girl, and she wondered what I was doing. I told her they were lines from a song, and she said they sounded very sweet.

A week later, Valentine's Day was approaching, and I created a mixed CD of love songs from video games to send her, one of which was "Eyes on Me." After another week, she told me she was listening to it, but had to go to a party, so didn't get through it all until later, when I was talking to her as she listened to it. When "Eyes on Me" began playing (the first time she ever heard it) she began crying because the song was so beautiful. The CD became her favorite that she owned, and the song became one of her favorite songs.

Months later, we finally met from across the country, and spent all our time together, as we had but two weeks. One night, she turned on the CD, just for us to listen to as we talked. I heard "Eyes on Me" playing as I fell asleep, and she began crying because she was so happy. The next time, I told her to set the player up to play "Eyes on Me," and after she did, I took her hands and we began slow-dancing in the middle of her room. "Was it real or just my fantasy?" We were in a dream, and the song pulled everything together for us. Tears began to fill my eyes as I stared at her face, listening to Faye Wong's voice professing secret and sacred love for another, and we both laughed when the line came "Share with me your love, if you have enough, your tears if you're holding back." We finished dancing as the song did, and ended it with a kiss.

The night before we had to separate once more, we played the CD once more, and heard "Eyes on Me" as we fell asleep together.

Faye Wong's beautiful singing, the wonderful lyrics, the stirring flute, and the managery of other things that add to the atmosphere of "Eyes on Me," make it a piece that will stay in the hearts of those who listen to it for the longest time. It will hold a special place in my heart for many years to come...

-Escushion

5 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful.......2003-06-07

Ever since I first played the video game "Final Fantasy VIII" I have been a fan of Faye Wong, and I am very glad I bought this.

1. Eyes on Me: In my review of Final Fantasy VIII's soundtrack, I said that this song wasn't my favorite, and although, it's not my favorite song that is sung, in the Final Fantasy series, I have learned to like it more, after getting this. When I don't think of it with Final Fantasy VIII, I like it better. It is very beautiful, and Faye's english is very good in it. I must say, she has impressed me.

2. Red Bean: I did'nt listen to this song right away, cause I didn't know what to except, but it's amazing. Probably the best song on this single cd. Although, it's not performed in english, it's very beautiful, and probably sounds so good, cause it's not in english.

3. Eyes on Me (Instrumental): A beautiful piece, but a little disappointing. I was hoping this would be as beautiful as the normal version, but it just doesn't capture the magic as well. Still, it's great, because of it's simple beauty.

If you like Eyes on Me in FF8, you'll love this single. I would also suggest, the FFX single "Isn't it Wonderful?" by Rikki, for those who like this.

    5 out of 5 stars original.......2003-04-26

In the mud of so-called Cantopop shines the diamond that is Faye Wong. A pop star who has always insisted on doing her own thing rather than what others want, Faye Wong has actually managed to create an original album (not easy in the nightmare of sugary pop that is typical Hong Kong fare). The 'beauty from Beijing' actually contributed to writing some of these songs, and spent far longer on this album that is usually accepted in the Canto-pop industry - a brave step. The album is aptly titled - it may be the one she has spent the most personal effort on.

'Faye Wong' spans many musical genres, fusing jazz, pop and the traditional sounds of the Chinese 'erhu' into some of the tracks, while others display heavier rock influences, and others are lighter pop. I found that one of the weakest tracks on the album to be the one penned by fellow pop star Nicholas Tse, "Vertigo", a conventional and rather unoriginal pop tune, but even so it's not bad.

You may have to press skip on one or two of the tracks on this album if you're not accustumed to radical and sudden changes in genres mid-album, but otherwise this CD is worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars FAYE is the Best!.......2003-01-15

Once you listened to Faye' songs, you would love her, even if you don' know the lyrics. It's real,Faye's singing not by mouth but by heart, and the music is the key.I love track5-SUDDENLY THIS YEAR best, and other Singles are great, too!LISTEN to FAYE by HEART,and you'll found the Best Voice in the world! She also had a English song- EYES ON ME.I'm so sure that song would make you cry!

    5 out of 5 stars Floored!.......2002-12-01

One word for this album: "WOW!" I went to China this summer and picked it up blind in a little record store down the street from where I was staying, with no idea who Faye Wang was. What a lucky find! She is relentlessly creative, yet doesn't let experimentalism overtake the quality and coherentness of her songs. I definitely recommend this album to anyone, Chinese Pop fan or not. Get it now, however you can!!

    5 out of 5 stars Faye's the ONE!.......2002-09-25

Absolutely marvellous. 'Nuff said, this is Faye at her best in yr 2001, seeing her juggling with commercial mainstream and arthouse appeal and the end result is a totally original album that transcend many different music genres... This time round, she ditched her favourite producer Zhang Ya-Dong for others like Tanya, Liang Qiaobo, Wu Bai, Eric Kwok and etc, and the sound of her new album is distinctly varied and each stamped with her style and the style of the producer. Juz sample track 2 and 3, Et Cetera and Wrong Number, you can feel that Tanya was singing in her shadow somewhere behind. That is not to say a bad thing b'coz it is hard for anyone to interfere with Faye's pristine vocals. Once you hear how Faye's does her ballads, you WILL be completely blown off! Sample track 5, Flowing Year and weep at the tinge of melancholy she brings into the song. Though not heartwrenching, it is the wistfulness and pensively regrettance that echo from her ethereal vocals that will bring you to your knees.
Other outstanding tracks are track1,7,8 ( 'Wings of Light', 'Wandering Red Shoe' and 'The Idiot') esp. 'Wings of Light', it is a rock-out anthemn with Faye's vocals blending to the cacophony of electronic guitars, drums n bass, instead of soaring above her which she usually does ( in her previous albums tracks such as 'A Hundred Years of Solitude'). However, one track which I felt was totally out of the place was track 4, 'Sometimes Love Has a False Reputation', it sounds uninspired, insipid attempt of the lounge music and it left me cold and disgusted why did even Faye choose this material? However it was only one mistake, and its nothing compared to the overall shimmering quality of this album.
As usual, the main lyricist is Lin Xi ( the LYRICIST of Mando AND Canto-pop). No one writes lyrics as poetically beautiful as him and no one writes lyrics as experimentally daring as him.
'Along the way there are people who see through too early the contours of life and the enigma of fate
There are people who realize too late that everything is destined to happen and there's no escape' in track 9 'One Way Street' philosophise about life in such simple words, and it is this quality that Lin Xi possess which constantly surprise me. Another of his musing in 'Flowing Year'...
Sighz.... What more can I say? Go grab this album right now before it is a light year away from you.............!

This is a great cd with many slow songs. I cant believe you actually mentioned kelly chen as a better vocalist than faye. I like kelly, but i think her singing talents is non comparable to faye's. Go GET THIS CD, its awesome.

3 out of 5 stars Faye Wong: 1989-1997 Double Best (Cinepoly/A&M).......2002-09-02

Faye Wong may be the top selling female artist in H.K., and I can understand why... but I have her 'Wish You Love Long' anthology 2CD which is much better than this & has songs like 'Caution', etc... that is not on this collection. Faye Wong is very talented, but I often compare her to Kelly Chen, who is much better than Faye. Some of Faye's songs are very boring & her best songs are included in the 'Wish You Live Long' collection. Try that one. This one is missing some of Faye's greatest songs. Faye Wong is very good, but beatable compared to Shirley Kwan, Anita Mui & Kelly Chen.

    5 out of 5 stars Wong Faye: China`s best.......2000-02-14

I am now a teacher in the East and have really gotten to enjoy the music here. I came across this album in a record store and the mix of the melody and voice got me. With a great diversity of style and a flare for power, Wong Faye is one of those CDs that you can just play over-and-over again. If you like music that is lyrically blessed and a singer who won`t disappoint get Wong Faye today.

5 out of 5 stars An unexpected favorite!.......1999-07-04

I had no prior knowledge of Faye Wong other than her stellar performance in Wong Kar-Wai's great film Chungking Express when I bought this album. At first I was rather disappointed in the soft pop nature of her material, all that I had heard was her cover of the Cranberries "Everything" which was a bit more rock oriented, but after a few listenings I have turned into a huge Faye Wong fan! She is simply wonderful! You don't have to live in Hong Kong to be totally enchanted by this great singer.

Buy this album and you will not be disappointed!

I was introduced to Faye in 1993 by my best friend. I am so hooked to her. Her voice is fantastic. I don't speak a word of chinese yet I know most of her lyrics. This CD is hot. #1 is mindblowing. I have to say that # 7 and #8 are my favorites though. I also love #10 and #2. I can't wait to pick up her latest CD. This album is banging. Take it from this no chinese speaking Jamaican.

Great CD.. just a little problem with amazon's description on this CD... Faye Wong is Chinese.. and this is a Chinese CD.. NOT Japanese!.. I would like to see a correction on all the Faye Wong's CD..

    5 out of 5 stars FayeWong-A Whole New Genre!.......2000-11-07

Faye has no doubt matured over the years! I'm unhappy about how Amazon describes her as the queen of mandarin pop. Faye's music is in reality a lot more alternative. Her music has been so fresh to so many people that critics find it hard to even label her songs as either "rock" or "techno". She seems to just mix everything in together to produce wonderful, yet different music. And of course, there's her voice. No one comes even close to her soft, high voice. Although, this isn't Faye's newest album (Her newest album is so unique I can't even describe it), it's still a good album. Track 1 is sorta a techno yet chinese opera feel-like song (if that's even possible), and track 10 is sorta dance-like, but accentuates her voice, and track 11 just blows your mind away, cuz its so unique. There's something for everyone in this CD. And truthfully only one song is "pop"-like, so if you like pop music, then this isn't the CD for you. Only critics and people who want to listen to something new should get this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Incoherence Stands In the Way of Making It a Perfect10.......2000-08-15

She is undisputably the Queen of Hong Kong pop,in terms of her style, her music and her popularity. However,I guess most of the non-Chinese population are still very unfamiliar with her(with the exception of those gameheads who dig FFVIII) She used to cover songs by the Cranberries and Tori Amos just by changing the lyrics of the song without altering the arrangement(just like the boy bands)once in a while. Later, she began to cover Cocteau Twins songs, 2 songs from 'Four-Candle Cafe', same thing, she just sings with exactly the same arrangement as the original. So many of you out there must be wondering, how the heck did her album get 4/5 from me? Well, she changed, a la Madonna, she reinvented herself and became the indie Queen of Hong Kong, still selling really well. Just listen to her rendition of Cocteau's 'Rilkean Heart',which is called 'Reminiscence', or if you prefer, buy the 'Restless' album(a la Cocteau) and tell me the difference. YES! She sounds gorgeous. Her vocal skills improved tremendously, as a result of emulating Elizabeth Fraser, which is really hard to imagine for most singers. Her last album 'Chang You' was great, there are a couple of really really commercial songs that seem out of place as usual, still, Track1'Lovelife', Track2'Face' and Track 7'Whimsical' are truly worthy of your attention, take note of the operatic kinda falsetto she showcased on'Face'. 'Lovers&Stangers'is her offering in 1999, which is still incoherent as ever, yet, 2 songs stands out as the best tracks in the album which is already worthy of your money(I know imports are expensive but she IS good!)Track1'Up to the Brambles' and Track5'Centuries of Loneliness', the former is a rock song with a fully-orchestrated arrangement, with the complement of special vocal distortion treatment making it one of a kind. The latter is simply the centrepiece of this album, fully-orchestrated just like track1, with a Middle East touch ,she really sounds like a siren here, this is a perfect example of how she can sound like a combination of Tori Amos, Dolores O'Riordan and Elizabeth Fraser, in a good way, of course! The rest of the album displays a kind of tranquility, some of you out there might find most of the songs here commercial, yes, it is true. This album, just like the rest of her albums with the exception of the perfect'Restless', is flawed, but with songs like 'Centuries of Loneliness' it is already worthy of your money....

    5 out of 5 stars Simply refreshing........2001-08-15

I've wondered for a while why Faye was so popular, and then I heard this. ^_^ Her voice is beautiful, dynamic, so light and flimsy and yet exploding with passion. Her songs are also very well written. Track one, last blossom is breathtakingly powerful. The arrangment is different, but very cool, very well done. I have to give my props to whoever wrote it, the lyrics are superb. Another one of my fav was one hundred year of solitude, which is one of the best pop songs I've heard in my life. This album is great, the songs are diverse and well written. All my life I seem to be surround by bubble gum pop, that, while okay with the ears, lacks meaning. But Faye's pop definitely carrys much more weight. She sings them with a nonchalant passion that grows on you very very quickly. One of Asia's greatest pop stars. Faye rules!

5 out of 5 stars Completely enjoyable from the first song to the last.......2000-02-24

It is rare these days to purchase a CD that has ten good songs let alone ten great ones. This has to be faye's best and most emotionally charged release ever. Don't miss this one.

5 out of 5 stars Faye is getting better and better!.......2000-01-29

The album rocks! Faye made an excellent attempt in marrying indie sensibility and mainstream appeal! The first track, the alternative Last Blossom features heavy digital distortion of Faye's vocal, and it's undoubtedly one of her best songs, ever! Faye's vocal performance just can't get better than this! The second track (The Moon Then) features the hallmark of Faye Wong. Lush vocal layers, sounding so definite and yet, effortless! The third track (Hypnosis) is another favourite of mine! The lyrics are utterly refreshing! This song, suprisingly reminds me of Natalie Imbruglia. The fourth track features Tong's (Faye's daughter) angelic laughters. A very good song indeed and definitely worth listening to! The fifth track, another rock based number, is another ingenius work of CY Kong and Adrian Chan. The lyrics are, again, excellent! Butterfly (Track 6) is a bittersweet number leaving a pleasnt aftertaste. The CD is defintely worth every penny of it, if not more. This is another brilliant work of Faye's. This girl has definitely got talent. No regrets at all getting this CD! I am so glad that Faye has not descended into a creative block after her divorce with her husband. Thumbs up for the album!
