Aside from being Buena Vista Social Club alumni, what else do Omara Portuondo and Eliades Ochoa have in common? They've both issued releases that include songs originally made famous by the great Beny Moré. After a successful Mexican tour with Conjunto Matamoros, the Cuban vocalist made his first big splash at the microphone of Pérez Prado's supercharged mambo machine (check out the overheated "Pachito E' Che 1950") before taking the reins of an orchestra of his own in 1954. Most Cuban singers are known for their deftness with the romantic bolero or the more aggressive mambo styles, but Moré excelled in both areas. On "Y Hot Como Ayer," recorded in 1955, he glides from a midregister croon to effortless trumpetlike glissandos, his big band pulsating behind him, while he plays a sonero to a T on 1957's "Que Bueno Baila Usted," one of many memorable songs he penned himself. The violin is an instrument few people would associate with Cuban music. Yet, beginning in the 1940s, Orquesta Aragon made massed fiddles synonymous with a dance-music style called charanga, which added a dose of urban sophistication to the more pastoral, flute-led danzon genre. Orquesta Aragon rode a gliding, polished sound based on the interplay between the string section and the effervescent flute of Richard Egües, more recently heard backing Senegalese singer Cheik Lô on his breakaway disc, Bambay Gueej. Though charanga would seem to be at odds with tougher, more rhythmically charged Cuban dance music, the Orquesta put the mambo-derived cha-cha on the map with Egües's composition "El Boduguero," which Nat "King" Cole later took to the top of the American charts. Famous members of this world-class ensemble include Rafael Lay, who arranged the songs with Egües, and Buena Vista Social Club alumnus Pio Leyva. The band remains together, but this disc traces the glory days of the late 1940s to the early 1950s. --Bob Tarte.

The Orquesta Aragon, the original Orquesta Aragon, was the ultimate dancing orchestra during the cha-cha-cha period. None other, not even Fajardo y sus Estrellas, could compete with the Aragon's style. But, unfortunately, there are too many CD's around that pretend to the Aragon's fame, without its ability. Making matters worse, the new Orquesta Aragon (which doesn't sound at all like the original) is recording many albums too. But THIS IS THE REAL THING! Buy it and enjoy every old song in the original style.

Could't agree more with the previous reviewer!!.......2003-06-17

I also think that Xiomara gets as tackie as possible on these records, but the orchestrations are beyond believe. The Cuarteto D'Aida is a real jewel. I saw Xiomara Alfaro last year in Miami and what a dessaster she was. You can imagine this recording is from the fifties and we are talking 2002. She was premanently out of key, horrible body expression and all they were waiting for was for the circussie stuff. But it was great to see her. Nothing, just one of those masochists things we do once in a while in life!

THE ORIGINAL CUBAN CAMP.......2000-08-03

I love Xiomara Alfaro. I love her in spite of and because of her campiness. She is the epitome of Cuban camp. She is the queen of Cuban kitsch. She never made up her mind whether she wanted to sing legitimately or be a pop singer, so she opted for both, combining a classically trained voice with a pop repertoire to produce an Yma Sumac kind of je ne sais quoi hybrid. Indeed, she was Cuba's answer to Yma Sumac, although she was never as far-out as the Incan Diva.

Her mix of coloratura high jinks and popular music is what ultimately endeared Xiomara Alfaro to several generations. Who can forget her rendition of the italian standard Luna Rossa complete with coloratura runs? Her version of Siboney is equally tacky, with a display of staccati at the end that must have ruffled Maestro Lecuona's feathers. The woman was never a linguist. Just what language is that she uses for Luna Rossa? It is definitely not Italian or any of its dialects. Her portuguese in Baia is equally laughable. Apparently nobody advised her at the time of the recording sessions that in the word abraco the c is pronunced as an s, as it is marked with a cedilla.

But no problem. None whatsoever. The essence of Xiomara Alfaro is not musical perfection or linguistic prowess. She is to be enjoyed and treasured precisely for what she is, a lovely reminder that whatever the Cuban artists of her time lacked, they certainly were not lacking in originality. So to that end, I proclaim her the Queen of The Cuban Originals Series.

I play Xiomara Alfaro and she immediately puts me in a groovy, mellow mood (how sixties!). She brings me joy. She makes me laugh out loud at her awfulness. She's better than Prozac. I strongly recommend this CD to anyone who is depressed.

I also strongly urge BMG Us Latin to continue its Cuban Originals series and show the world that there is more to Cuban music than The Buena Vista Social Club. They can start by giving us the RCA recordings of another artist who reigned supreme in the field of camp, Bola de Nieve, whom I also adore. And let's not forget the RCA sides of Gonzalo Roig (In A Cuban Garden comes to mind) and El Cuarteto De Aida.

A great big kiss to Xiomara Alfaro and a big thanks to BMG US Latin for preserving her recorded legacy. After all is said and done, I, being a Cuban myself, would prefer that we be remembered for artists like Xiomara Alfaro, rather than for second class non-entities like Omara Portuondo and company.

Pérez Prado may not have invented the mambo, but he invented the style of mambo most people remember. The Cuban-born Prado had his first success developing his high-octane variation on the son montuno in Mexico in 1949. His angular arrangements with chugging rhythms were too radical for the Cuban recording establishment, but not for the Mexican film industry. Prado became the musical director sought by leading producers, and his soundtracks attracted deserved attention back home--leading to a fruitful collaboration with vocalist Beny Moré. Many of the songs here bear the stamp of Prado's cinematic sweep, like "Sabor a Mi," where a picaresque muted trumpet scales peaks of throbbing brass, or the bombastic annunciation of "Besame Mucho." Because he was so ambitiously modernist, his oeuvre still sounds fresh today. A lightning-bug version of "Flight of the Bumblebee" casts off impressive solos with the nonchalance of a clown juggling while turning cartwheels. Gaudy and irresistible, these instrumentals--including two of Prado's earliest mambos--cross-pollinate swing era big band music and Afro-Cuban rhythms with the delicacy of a cymbal crash. I have not found a Perez Prado album that I don't like. This one includes some great songs. The 11th song alone was worth they buy for me. If you have a chance to get any Prez Prado album, do it.

Evocative and gorgeous.......2001-07-27

I had heard another artist interpret Lecuona before listening to the composer play his own work. I was reminded of how much I enjoyed the music when I was reintroduced to Lecuona through the BEFORE NIGHT FALLS soundtrack. Not all the artists on the soundtrack have albums that are so thoroughly listenable. Beautiful music, not only Cuban in background but with traces of Chopin, jazz, and dance. Highly recommended simply for Lecuona's virtuoso solo style.

ORIGINAL GOLD FROM AN ORIGINAL MASTER.......2000-08-03

This release is part of the on-going Cuban Originals series, which so far has included about a dozen plus re-issues from the likes of Desi Arnaz, Perez Prado, Beny More, Xiomara Alfaro, etc. You will not find any CD debuts here. All the material in this series has been available on CD before.

That said, let's move on to ERNESTO LECUONA, and simply state that he was the best composer that Cuba ever produced. His musical legacy is well documented, as is his prolificacy in all genres. His music ran the gamut from the classical, including zarzuelas and lieder, to the popular, including rumbas and afro-cuban pieces.

This release spotlights his music for solo piano, and it gives us the composer himself playing his own compositions. Anyone familiar with Lecuona's piano playing will comment on two specific points: his virtuosity and his left hand. Both are on excellent display here. One marvels at the astonishing beauty of his playing and the uncanny use of the left hand, which seems to have a life of its own.

I strongly recommend this CD as an introduction to the music of Ernesto Lecuona. It has nothing new to offer the hard-core Lecuona aficionado, but it makes a great gift for the casual listener of Cuban music or good music in general.

BMG needs to continue its Cuban Originals series and add Lecuona's three complete zarzuela recordings to it. They are MARIA LA O, ROSA LA CHINA, and EL CAFETAL. They are the property of BMG Spain and feature the fantastic Dolores Perez as soloist. BMG also needs to give us their recordings of Bola de Nieve and Gonzalo Roig, remastered, as these two were also Cuban Originals.

VINTAGE LECUONA.......2000-07-27

This release is part of the CUBAN ORIGINALS series, BMG's celebration of classic Cuban performers in tried-and-true repertoire. All of the tracks on this release have been available on CD before, and while there is nothing new here for Lecuona followers, there is still his incomparable piano playing with its one-of-a-kind left hand prodigiousness to contend with. If you already have the Lecuona oeuvre on CD, then this makes a great gift for the occasional fan of Lecuona or of Cuban music in general. Now, if only BMG would re-release on CD their complete recordings of his zarzuelas MARIA LA O, ROSA LA CHINA, and EL CAFETAL from the late fifties! These historical recordings featuring the great soprano Dolores Perez and originally on the Zafiro label are now the property of BMG through their acquisition of the Zafiro catalog. Giving us those three zarzuelas in a state-of-the-art remastering would be the most wonderful thing that BMG could do if they are really serious about the preservation of their CUBAN ORIGINALS.

Though Desi Arnaz earned enduring fame as Lucille Ball's television and real-life husband, he was already a star a full decade before I Love Lucy hit the tube. Born in the roots-music mecca of Santiago de Cuba, Arnaz came to America early in life and apprenticed with Xavier Cugat's orchestra before setting out on his own. He hit his peak in the post-World War II years. Between 1946 and 1949, Arnaz broadcast radio shows twice a week, starred in three films with his band, and recorded 43 sides for RCA Victor. All of the songs on this disc are from that fertile period. Every cut is loaded with personality, from his signature song "Cuban Pete," which paints him as an archetypal romantic rogue, to the Latin calypso "You Can in Yucatan." But Desi knew mere personality had its limits and that his voice, however appealing, was thin compared to the Cuban greats. Thus, he allowed his band ample opportunity to shine on showcase pieces like the quick-stepping "El Cumbanchero." His arrangements, though fun, mostly play it safe. Compare his pastoral version of "Peanut Vendor" to Pérez Prado's volcanic trumpet-breathing mambo or even his "Babalu" with Casino de la Playa's (both featured on the CD Baile Tropical, also in BMG's Cuban Originals series). Still, Desi's showmanship constantly shines through, and his huge success bringing Cuban sounds to the masses guarantees his place in pop music history. --Bob Tarte.

"Steps Taken" is Ted Hogarth's debut CD as a leader. The five original compositions included show his love for all styles of jazz, from tradional swing to Afro-Cuban. All I can say is WOW! This CD dominates my drive to and from work and everywhere else a CD player is available. The smoothness of his bari sax and the suprise of Ted's use of his bass clarinet add to the freshness of this new artist! Where has he been hiding? I eagerly recommend this CD to all jazz lovers!

A new Gerry Mulligan.......2001-01-08

This new and refreshing baritone saxophone player not only swings with jazz, he presents ballad standards with an entirely new sound, never before heard on the baritone. Who could ever imagine "Laura" or "Morning Glory" played smoothly and hauntingly on the big barry? The last time I heard "Pure Imagination" was in the movie "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" and I always wondered why no one bothered to record it. You won't hear it anywhere else, and Ted does it beautifully, on guess what? The bass clarinet, as he does on "Ghost of a Chance" and "Harbinger"! A big bonus on this disk is the accompaniment by his good friend and world-famous Gershwin pianist, Kevin Cole. I'm sure that George would love this one.
