Had a couple of salad vegetables performed Sunday-school songs in our day the way they do here, we parents might have made it through the weekly churchgoing ritual without the regular reaming by our own moms and dads. Delivering the between-song dialogue and cartoon shenanigans that keep kids from drifting off are Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber, who whoop it up from the first track with wah-wah guitar effects, loopy lyrical improv, fellow VeggieTales guest vocalists, and a smattering of big-band swing. A kids' choir provides the starch that saves Sunday morning from becoming a beta-carotene bomb. While Bob twists his tongue around mouthfuls like "the mighty messiah that manifests miracles" in "Down in My Heart," for instance, the kids keep pace for at-home singers, who'll follow suit. Similarly, the child crooners carry on without so much as a snicker as Sgt. Larry barks out "Gimme 20!" in "This is My Commandment" and chimes in with a wacky "No way!" during the "Don't let Satan blow it out" verse of "This Little Light of Mine." The originals "God's Way," "Love Your Neighbor," and "I Believe God Can" capture hummable, child-size chunks of morality, complementing traditionals like "He's Got the Whole World" and "Jesus Loves the Little Children." And once Joshua fights the battle of Jericho and we've washed up in a river of peace, this record swings into section two--the split-track rerun (without the veggie character commentary). Cue it up at the crack of dawn as a pre-service snooze-prevention device--ironically, in Bob and Larry's vitamin-rich hands, church songs become less boring broccoli and more crunchy Cheetos. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars a sure winner.......2007-05-14

We weren't sure this was going to appeal to to youngest of our age group but it was a winner. The 6 months old even bounce to the tunes and the two year olds dance to their favorites. They can tell the adults what Bob & Larry will sing next. It is a plus for any Christian Program or any home that loves the old Sunday School Favorites

5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining with a great message!.......2007-03-01

Your kids will NOT be bored with this CD. Cute songs with humorous banter between Bob and Larry, as usual. Great Christian music that your kids will actually WANT to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars My Kids love Bob and Larry.......2007-01-11

This a fantastic cd. Both my kids- 6 and 4 love this cd. They want to listen to all the time. The songs are catchy and they also get to sing them at Sunday school.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, fun, fun!.......2005-01-27

This was a baby shower gift and I can't say for sure yet whether my son likes this one (he's all of 7 1/2 weeks) but I do! It makes feeding time and diaper-changing a little more fun for Mom at least right now and I hope he'll enjoy these crazy versions of fun Sunday School songs when he's a little older. This is a good one!

5 out of 5 stars fantastic!!!.......2004-11-11

I gave this to my three year old son for his birthday, and he absolutely loves it! His favorite song is "Jericho." He learned the songs in no time, and he enjoys listening to them on long car trips. This is a wonderful CD for preschoolers!

Amazon.com essential recording

This is a great series of recordings. Leonard Slatkin has generally chosen the right balance of music for the composers used in the series (with terrific cover art from Thomas Hart Benton). This disc is devoted to Copland's film music. The treat here is a version of The Heiress Suite reconstructed by Arnold Freed. Copland's talent for writing for films rested in his ability to identify and maintain themes, at the same time not slacking on the transitional details. This belongs in any Copland collection. --Paul Cook

5 out of 5 stars Aaron Copland: the Norman Rockwell of film scoring.......2004-06-14

When I purchased this collection I was already very familiar with Mr. Copland's more popular fanfaric motifs. I was astounded at how much I enjoyed the wonderful division of both sweeping dramatic themes and friendly, home-grown melodies. His film scores for the 1939 'Of Mice and Men' and the 1940 'Our Town' are a testament to classic films set in simpler times. The 'Red Pony' tracks for which the compilation is named are a magical digression from the listener's pre-conceived notions of Copland western fare. When one expects "Rodeo" (arguably one of Copland's most famous themes) one instead receives a gentler and sometimes powerfully moving score. The crowning jewel of this collection, however; is the beautiful suite from his Academy Award winning score for William Wyler's 1949 film of 'The Heiress.' When listening to this magnificent piece of musical history I am reminded how so many great scores are unavailable to listeners of today, and only through recreation and re-recordings can we re-capture those glimpses of film score artistry. I can only hope that many lost or hard to find works continue to be found or recorded so that film score and music lovers in general can continue to discover and rediscover the joy and beauty of our masters in film composing.

5 out of 5 stars Great recording of definitive American film music.......2004-04-08

In a way, filmgoers have been listening to Copland's film scores nearly every time they go to the cinema, since film composers have been shamelessly ripping off Copland for the last half-century or so. When you listen to the "Our Town" suite, do you get the nagging feeling that you have heard this music somewhere before? No doubt you have, in dozens of derivitave film scores from the 1980's and 1990's, sometimes (shamelessly) right down to the exact chord progressions.

How nice it is then to be able to go back to the source, and have rendered in so superb a fashion as it is by Slatkin & the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Slatkin, as usual, upholds his reputation as one of the leading interpreters of American music.

This CD contains the premier recording of "The Heiress Suite," which is a delight to listen to, and of course the fairly well-known "Red Pony" music. Is their a more quintessential piece of "Western" music than the "Walk to the Bunkhouse?" How does a jewish boy from Brooklyn nail it on the head so perfectly, anyway?

Other selections include "Music for Movies," a collection of bits & pieces from an assortment of Copland-scored movies that Copland arranged in 1943, and "Music for Radio," an earlier composition that isn't really "movie music," but fits well with the rest of the compositions on this CD.

Instead of wasting your time on movie soundtracks that are nothing more than just derivitave hack jobs, listen to music by a composer who had truly mastered his craft.

5 out of 5 stars Leonard Slatkin conducts Copland.......2000-11-14

This album is worth it just to get the world premiere recording of "The Heiress Suite" reconstructed by Arnold Freed. Also of note are Walk to the Bunkhouse from "The Red Pony" and New England Countryside. Leonard Slatkin conducts these pieces with great emotional feel that states that this is the same America that Copland wanted to us to embrace.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Album Description

This album cannot be described as anything but an electic, very varied offering from Hawaii's No.1 ukulele player. This is his first solo project. It has, after one week, shot straight to the top of the local charts, outselling Iz, Kealii Reichel, Hapa, everybody!

At his alubm release party, another first! He conducted a concert with PAID admission. His crowd was from the very young to they very old. Very enjoyable for all.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sunday Morning by Jake Shimabukuro.......2006-08-30

Excellent music, brings back memories of the Islands. Jake Shimabukuro is very talented! I recommend this to anyone who has a love for the Hawaiian islands and/or talent in general --well worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing! He'll make you change how you feel about the ukulele........2005-10-27

I first heard of Jake from listening to a Jimmy Buffett concert on Sirius radio. The concert started out with an electrifying ukulele solo of the Star Spangled Banner. I was so blown away just by that one opening to the concert, I don't even remember the rest, just Jimmy introducing Jake something-or-other. So it didn't take long to find him on Amazon; I got this cd on hearing that ONE song alone, and the fact that I happen to love the plucky happy ukulele sound. Any preconceptions you had about the ukulele sound--a la Tiny Tim, et al--will be tossed out the window. I'm looking forward to getting the rest of his cds after hearing this one.

This is great mellow, put in the cd player on continuous shuffle and let play all day, kind of music. It's all instrumental, a little jazzy, a little classical, a little early-10000 Maniacs sounding, a little Latin sounding, it's all good! The remake of Santo & Johnny's "Sleepwalk" has a nice haunting Hawaiian twang to it. He even does an excellent version of "Close to you"--that sappy sweet Carpenter's song that brings back bad 70's flashbacks. The last song, a live recording called "Crazy G", will have you wishing you were there just to see him play this! The speed in which Jake plays this is incredible--at the beginning! Throughout the song the audience chants "Faster!" and each consecutive time he plays this ditty faster. By the end, I can only imagine cartoon-like uke strings breaking, fingers turning into smaller nubs, and sweat gushing!

So if you're looking to expand your music horizons and enjoy hearing ukulele, give Jake Shimabukuro a listen!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME JUST AWESOME.......2004-04-09

I just got back from Hawaii and saw Jake at the Xentopia concert on the beach. He was AMAZING!!!! He had so much energy you can tell he loves his job. I bought this cd and Crosscurrents after his performance and he was there to autograph them. He was nice as can be to everybody. His music is just AWESOME!!! BUY both of his cds. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars No Ka Oi.......2004-02-12

My first introduction to Jake Shimabukuro was at a live performance--and nothing can beat that! He's an amazing, high-energy, extremely talented performer who really connects with his audience. He's breathed a freshness into the modern Hawaiian music scene and plays a really mean electric ukulele!

5 out of 5 stars great music.......2003-05-01

I really liked Sunday Morning it is so good. But my favorites are the ones Jake wrote.

4 out of 5 stars Brass at its Best Ever........2005-10-22

A few years ago, I couldn't get enough of the Canadian Brass music. They were a delight to watch and to hear. They put so much spirit and talent into each performance, it was a wonder to behold. In this collection, there is a stirring Sousa grouping, Carnival of Venice, Pachelbel: Canon, and The Flight of the Bumblebees. It's a fantastic selection; they've recorded jazz and silly songs. For an obvious reason, the brass section is my favorite in any band or orchestra; two of my sons played the same trombone several years apart in the Pulaski school bands. Although Jeff, the flutist, was concertmaster his last year, I loved the way Zach and Justin mastered the trombone. Kenny's specialty was the trumpet (as was Chuck Southcott's), which shines through the brass section and is usually the star instrument.

These talented performers use comedy and fun to overshaow their fantastic performances. Hear them just once, and you will be hooked.

4 out of 5 stars Almost the first collection.......2004-10-25

This album is the recording of the Canadian Brass's first collection. Very old one, and here's the memeber list: Bb Trumpet - Ron Romm, C trumpet - Fred Mills, Frech Horn - David Ohanian, Trombone - Gene Watss, Tuba - Chuck Daellanbach. This recording might seem boring, but the performance are so superb that you can hardly wait to listen to it again.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Classical Music for your money.......2006-10-12

I should tell you I started listening to this CD over half my lifetime ago. I was just 12 years old. It is still by far one of my favorites. I am more into rock, country, emo and alternative. For some reason though this happens to be one of my favorite CD's of all times. We have bought and worn out a number of copies in our house. Tapes have also been replaced. I guess this CD holds a special place in my heart since it was originally given to me by my grandmother before she died.

4 out of 5 stars Coffee and crossword.......2004-08-06

Richard Burmer is the highlight of this collection. I was in a shop in Singapore called Barang Barang which sells indonesian style furniture and accessories. Across The View was playing in the shop and after asking what it was I went downstairs (it was a shopping Mall) and bought the CD. That was back in 1996. Now in 2004 I still find this track a must at times of stress.

I played the track to a colleague at the time who instantly recognised it and told me it was a song by a Japanese band. Next day he brought that CD in and sure enough there it was Across The View - with lyrics (in English). It was done pretty much the same bar the vast landscape and having the addition of a fretless bass which was to die for. I have hunted high and low (yes I was an A-ha fan back in the mid 80's!!!) for this Japanese band's CD and having left Singapore, cannot ask my former colleague the name. If anyone out there has a clue what I'm talking about, please post a note here and let me know the name.

The rest of this CD is fine and definately background music to an occassion. You cant sit down on a Sunday with a cup of coffee and just sit there and listen - you have to be doing something at the same time.

Its very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Music to Relax With.......2004-02-04

This is a nice variety of soothing sounds, with a blend of instruments and the aroma of differing musical styles, but each meant for relaxation, and stimulation.

Those of Davis of Steamrolling fame are his usual good stuff, while the guitar and piano pieces are simply exquisite.

Can't personally recommend these for Sunday mornings, since we all should be gathering at church, but for those other appropriate times, this is nice collection to sip coffee with and ponder the grandeur of God's created universe.

5 out of 5 stars If you have passion in mind, this is it........2003-04-02

I've owned this album for some time, and I can assure you that you won't hear this in any homily. This is about love, passions, and the wonder of being with that most special person in the quietude that somehow is Sunday morning. The selections ease from early-morning tenderness through intimacy and back again, making the composition of the ambum itself as impressive as each of its tracks. For lovers, for lovers on Sunday Morning, this is that album. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Sure, Another Cup of Relaxation, Please!.......2004-02-05

Another cup of Sunday Morning Coffee, with the same group of composers/musicians who turn out another satisfying collection of music to calm out with.

I especially have become attracted to Smith's "Sunday Sunrise" and Berkey's "Consolation in D-flat." Truly gifted artists, this stuff is serene and mellow and full of good vibes.

Curl up with this, some good hot coffee, maybe your lover and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Chip Davis.......2002-06-18

This is an outstanding CD; my wife and I have not been able to find its match in other Chip Davis works. It is not New Age, although that is the category in which you will frequently find it. It is a varied collection of instrumental pieces, but the selection of pieces is probably as important as the delivery. Great for Sunday morning, or any other time you want to relax to good music!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Relaxing.......2001-12-27

This is a CD that works for every occassion. I was bothered, when searching for it in a local record store, by the fact that it was labled with New Age music. Folks, this is great soft jazz. Not wood winds or brass, rather piano and guitar which comes in an autumn breeze through an open window. I had never heard of Chip Davis much less the other artists but it was recommened to me as a junior in college, and 11 years later it still gets its spin on a monthly basis. Not a bad song on the disc.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what you'd expect from Chip Davis........1999-10-20

Every selection is one morning reflection after the other. A day of rest, the morning paper, a cup of coffee and thoughts of wonderful things floating in and out of your mind as you settle in and muse on a Sunday morning --- or any other morning for that matter. This is music for the pensive, aesthetic in all of us.

Amazon.com essential recording

Most people don't remember when bluegrass lived next to its brethren on country radio and on country charts. Ralph Stanley, of course, does remember. On this remarkable 1992 recording, he invites a myriad of guests from the whole of country music, not from just bluegrass, and the result is a collection that highlights the timeless connection between all of country music's styles: sincerity and reality conveyed through simple melodies and heartfelt singing. Disc 1 focuses on the secular, disc 2 the spiritual, and along the way, Stanley matches his raw tenor with everyone from bluegrassers (Bill Monroe, Jimmy Martin, Charlie Waller, Larry Sparks, Ricky Skaggs, Alison Krauss) to honky-tonkers (George Jones, Dwight Yoakam) to storytellers (Tom T. Hall) to country divas (Emmylou Harris, Patty Loveless). No matter who sits in, Stanley's wonderfully unrefined voice and fleet banjo hold fast. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best bluegrass album I own.......2005-12-01

I can't believe more people have not reviewed this album. I love all sorts of music, including bluegrass--rock, blues etc--but this is one of my desert island discs. Really, if I could only have five discs, this double album would represent bluegrass for me. It is that good.

5 out of 5 stars Just Great........2000-11-25

Only the best happenin' here! Killer harmonies and powerful songs. The Best (Ralph Stanley) singing with The Best (all the rest). One really great song after another...... (one cd has "saturday night" energy, and other has "sunday morning" energy) ----- Every song (5) with Judy Marshall is just fantastic (of course). "Heaven's Bright Shore" (w/Judy Marshall and Allison Krauss) is superb and one of the very best here....... This beyond-great sounding trio also sings "A Vision of Mother" (the original song, written by Carter and Ralph Stanley, is on the Complete Columbia Stanley Brothers (c.1948) - and this is one of the best Stanley Brothers albums you could have). ------------- There are so many great songs here - just one right after another -like Midnite Storm w/Vince Gill, I'll Meet you in Church Sunday Morn w/Bill Monroe, Great High Mountain, w/emmylou Harris and Judy Marshall, Sea of Regret/All I ever Loved was You, w/ Ricky Scaggs---------- but my personal pick for the number one killer song goes to "Going Up Home to Live in Green Pastures" with Larry Sparks. It is simple and powerful and it takes me there.............. I give this cd 100 diamonds on black velvet... and those would be stars....

5 out of 5 stars The best bluegrass album I have ever heard........1998-12-18

I have been listening to bluegrass music for all of my 52 years and have seen the best performers, including Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley. This album is absolutely superb.
