The style known as "anti-folk," as realized by practitioners like Ani DiFranco and Billy Bragg, is derived from a punk aesthetic, and thus tends to be spare and confrontational. But while Regina Spektor's music is anti-folk in the way it subverts the traditional coffeehouse vibe, it's less interested in rebellion and more concerned with the joy of eccentricity, melody and surprise. Begin To Hope is full of surprises, and like her promising major label debut Soviet Kitsch, it displays an easy facility with song structure that enables her to go in different--sometimes wildly off-the-wall--directions without sounding scattered. Classically trained on the piano, she's been compared to Tori Amos, but her music isn't as delicate or precious. Fiona Apple comes up as well, but just because neither fits in the usual female singer/songwriter cookie cutter mold doesn't mean they sound the same. Her voice is actually the primary attraction, cracking and loopy on would-be lullabies like "On The Radio" and "Field Below," then punchy and cute on "Hotel Room." But the music, if understated in the mix next to her vocals, makes an impression as well, breaking in with twisty piano arpeggios ("20 Years of Snow") and occasional touches of electronica. Admittedly, I am a book reviewer at heart, and typically leave the music reviews to those who are more qualified. However, I find that I simply cannot keep my mouth shut on this one. Spektor has revived my faith in music. She is fresh, and new, and unlike anyone else I have heard lately. Call me crazy, but being a child of the 80s, she puts me in mind of Cyndi Lauper with all of her seemingly quirky and funloving antics. With all of the poseur garbage coming out in the last seven (or so) years, I can only say that I find Regina Spektor to be fresh, fun, and for once, unique. Forget downloading! This is a CD you must own.

My friend recommented her to me. I heard her single Fidelity before and thought it nice then forgot about it. Just on impulse, I grabbed her cd from my friend's car and decided to give it a listen today. Glad I did, I just love it and gushed to my friend and he sent me more of her songs. I love her even more. Regina has such a unique style both on melody and lyrics. It's hard to put in words, you just have to listen to her. Give her a try. I'm going to get all her albums.

annoying at first but then she grows on you.......2007-06-30

Regina Spector recieved radio play at the station I listen to as well as having a short article in Newsweek. I purchased her CD based on these things . The first few listens of her CD annoyed me. There were too many "clever hooks" that she does with her voice. But, after about 10 listens, her music started to grow on me. Like alot of young artists, she brings a fresh perspective on perpetual themes but also has themes that are unusual. She plays the piano very well and her voice is clear and strong. I don't know if I will want to listen to her CD 5 years from now when it's lost the novelty but it's a good start for a young artist.

Absolutely Gorgeous.......2007-08-05

Now I know why Vince Chase went so gaga over her. This CD is a revelation of great music, superior lyrics and above all else an incredible vocal prowess that effortlessly combines purity and sincerity on top of some serious singing chops!

This girl can blow with the best of them and with the twelve songs on "Wild Hope" she de facto eclipses her contemporary singing sistren to claim a spot in the pantheon that is Loretta, Ella and Joan. Are you as tired as I am of the strident overpowering vocals that so many of today's talented young songbirds feel are de rigeur; (paging Kelly Clarkson)? If yes than this CD will become your busom companion. Every note exuded is easily assured and unforced. The clarity and profundity in Ms. Moore's voice is hypnotic and thoroughly addicting and the song "A Few Days Down" might just go down as one of pop music's towering achievements in 2007.

Mandy Moore, "Wild Hope", don't think just buy and while you're at it pick up a spare because you'll want to share the joy of a true American treasure.

Break out album has grown on me.......2007-08-02

I bought this album more out of curiousity than being a Mandy Moore fan. After the first listening, I felt the album was decent, but not great. The album is heavily influenced by relationship problems.

After listening to it a couple more times, I came to appreciate the individual songs more. The middle tracks such as Few Days Down and Can't You Just Adore Her have become my favorites from her album.

I would recommend you give the album a chance. Given the quality of this album, I think Mandy Moore has a chance to achieve greater artistic success even if commercial success in music eludes her.

I am going to preface this review by saying I never in a MILLION years would think I would actually buy a Mandy Moore cd. I am a fan of singer/songwriters like Kim Richey, Jonatha Brooke, Chantal Kreviazuk, Dixie Chicks just to name a few. The only reason I bought this cd was because Chantal Kreviazuk wrote a song called "Gardenia" with Mandy.

Well let me tell you something--the cd has not left my car. I also play it constantly on my Ipod and Itunes on my computer. Its a fantastic cd that reminds me of a cross between Michelle Branch/Anna Nallick/Joni Mitchell/Jonatha Brooke.

I would honestly have to say this cd has been my favorite of 2007 from beginning to end. I never skip a song.

Mandy Moore??? Who knew?? Great songwriter and a fantastic voice. Its a shame this cd will not get the sales it deserves because people think artists like Fergie are actually "good".

With stunning good looks and superb acting talent, I can't understand what else she needs... and then I hear this CD. Great music. In fact probably my favorite this year. Amazing. I love her voice and once again I have to mention the music is great. Recommended for anyone.

I bought this CD after hearing Regina perform "Fidelty" on Connan O'Brien one late night and I became enchanted by her unique and passionate sound and songwriting. If you want to listen to something different from all the music that your hear day in and day out on the radio, listen to this CD! This CD is what a real singer/songwriter is all about.

I'm someone with an eclectic taste when it comes to music, loving everything from Bach to Pink Floyd. This album, I must say, extremely pleased me. It brought the laid back style you'd think of when dealing with the blues or artists like Dido or Nora Jones. Yet, there was something different. The stylings were not what I had expected, being mostly familiar with Fidelity, they left me wanting the other albums to hear what attitudes Spektor reveals. The lyrics are inspiring, the attitude spunky and everchanging, and everything else goes to compliment and support Spektor's unique voice.

Good but mainstream.......2007-05-17

I will first state that that I am a big fan of Regina Spektor, I just went to her show in Chicago on may 13th and her borders in-store on may 14th. Having had been to the show I must say the begin to hope is good but a bit of a disappointment when compared to previous college released efforts, live only songs, and her debut studio full length soviet kitsch. The tracks on begin to hope do still reflect Regina's unmistakable unique style but are a bit toned down from her usual songs and are a bit over produced. This album seems to have been made to attract more mainstream listeners. But I have to admit to being a bit bias because I'm not big fan of mainstream acts because when MOST acts become mainstream they lose a bit of them selves. I like most of the songs on this effort because I'm a big Regina Spektor fan but there are better songs on previous efforts. The only song I find complete unlistenable is 20 years of snow.
The attacted ep disc is good as well. The stand out the ep is Dusseldoft and Music box. But I have to pose the question why make a regular album then a special edition. If you're a fan why would you not want the extra songs.

I'm a french guy who discovered Regina 3 month ago and I fell in love with her music. Her voice is very impressive, the arrangements are excellent and every song is a rare pearl. I'd like to see her quickly in France. "Magnifique" as we say here.

I can't stand singer songwriters who spill their emotions musically with a predictable, dull, and uninspired chords over piano (a.k.a. Lillith fair style). There's a new sheriff in town ladies, so eat humble pie. I saw Regina on Letterman and became an immediate fan. Her originality, musicianship, and original vocal style, hooks, and accompanyment makes me about as excited as I was when the Beatles put out Sgt. Pepper. It's that good! It's brilliant, It's fun, and her voice is one of the best pop vocalists I've heard since Dusty Springfield. I'm hooked on her videos too. I have to listen to "On the Radio" at least twice a day. It makes me very happy! aaa aaa a la a oh!

With rapturous romanticism and over-the-top, heart-on-sleeve emotion, Matt Nathanson can't decide whether he wants to be U2's Bono (particularly on the opening "Car Crash") or John Mayer (with whom he's toured as an opening act). Though his roots are in the folk coffeehouse, he plainly has his ears aimed toward the rock arena, as the propulsive "To the Beat of Our Noisy Hearts" and "Detroit Waves" attest. "Wedding Dress" sounds like it's aspiring to become a first-dance standard, while the sensuality of "Come On Get Higher" suggests more stripped-down delights. A couple of lines here compete for the album's cheesiest: "C'mon let's make this dream that's barely half-awake come true" (from "Heartbreak World") and "All we are we are/and every day's a star/something beautiful" (from the breathy closing track). Since discovering Susan Tedeschi I am absolutely hooked....her voice is like Bonnie Raitt on steroids!! Her voice is rough, but not forced, very sincere and natural. This album covers so many great songs it's hard to pick a favorite, but I'd have to say her Stones cover of "You Got the Silver" is amazing. "Share Your Love", an Aretha Franklin cover, is phenomenal as well; actually, there's not a bad song on this cd. Buy it - you won't be disappointed!

Susan Tedeschi puts her hubby Derek Trucks to shame! Her voice is fabulous. Although, I prefer her "Live in Austin", this one is great as well...she covers "I got the silver" impeccably. She is awesome!

I'm an avid Susan Tedeschi fan, so I was pleased by this CD. I've seen Ms. Tedeschi perform live and will be seeing her and her husband (Derek Trucks) next month so this album is part of my "preparations" for the concert :-)
I love her phrasing when she sings, I love the choice of material on this CD, and her obvious love for the blues genre. I never thought any current female singer could love and promote the blues as well as Bonnie Raitt until Susan came along. Now the blues has two of the most beautiful female voices in the music industry converting new listeners to their music. AND they can both play like the dickens!!
Keep the blues alive ladies!

Someone stop Joe Henry before he "produces" again!.......2007-02-08

I'm serious, someone shove JH out from behind the mixing console before he mangles another CD!!

For the record, I own and enjoy most of Joe's CDs and all of Susan's CDs . But the production here is just strange, with lots of instruments in mono panned hard right or left, and almost every track has the trailing sound of some instrument (usually organ) dragging on for too long before the fadeout - gaaa!!

But my biggest disappointment with this CD: this a CD by a blues guitarist upon which said guitarist doesn't play! What (TF) were they thinking? Susan: girl, you play fine, don't listen to those pinheads who say you can't. I saw you live last year and was totally blown away by your playing and singing!

p.s. Joe H. also helped to ruin the latest CD from Aimee Mann (The Forgotten Arm) with his shenanigans.

Wonderful! And with thanks to John Williams for introducing this listener to "The Planets!".......2007-05-07

I bought this CD after a Tanglewood concert a few years ago where John Williams, focusing on movie music including his own compositions, also conducted "The Planets." I recognized "Jupiter" as the theme music for a WQXR (the New York Times radio station) "New York at 6" program. It was a treat to find out where that piece came from. When I listened to this beautifully performed CD, I was pleasantly surprised to see Mr. Williams' movie music included -- a brilliant move on the part of this item's producers (just listen to "Mars" and then to "Star Wars"). As another reviewer has suggested, it's not clear why his music was included, but there are similarities here which I'd love Mr. Williams to discuss some day. I've since become an avid amateur astronomer, and so the themes, musical and otherwise, projected in the works of Holst and Williams have become a special treat for the mind as well as the ear.

Very good recording of The Planets. I like it even better than the Sir Alexander Gibson recording, although that was my previous favorite. This piece needs to be played dynamically, and Mehta certainly does that. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a certain amount of bombast and a decent workout for their woofers.

It Doesn't Get Much Better.......2006-09-26

This is the fourth recording of "The Planets" I've purchased, and I am extremely pleased. The Los Angeles Philharmonic was at its best here, and much of that was owed to the genius of its then director Zubin Mehta. Crisp arrangements, and a full orchestral sound is how you achieve the full effect of "The Planets." Other conductors should take note. Not my favorite, that honor still goes to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, under the leadership of Leopold Stokowski. But you definitely can't go wrong with this one.

A fine CD at a friendly price.......2006-09-01

I've heard several recordings of "The Planets," and I like this one very much. The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra (with Zubin Mehta conducting) and the Los Angeles Master Chorale (Women's voices) do a fine job of capturing the drama of the work. And I think it was a good idea to couple it with a little of the outer-space-related music of John Williams.

Holst wrote selections about all eight planets, except for the Earth. But what about Pluto? Oh, wait, it got demoted last week! It's only a dwarf planet. Or maybe just a big rock. In any case, we hear some imaginative musical descriptions of the remaining planets.

I recommend this excellent performance.

Lee Ann Womack may well have the most hard-country female voice in Nashville; while her first two albums showed much promise, they didn't boost her past the middle of the pack. So what's the Nashville solution? Instead of playing to her strengths, make her soprano sound smaller and more compact (think Dolly, not Tammy), de-twang it so she sounds more creamy and dreamy. In other words, try to make her sound more like everyone else. Most of these songs are slow or midtempo, building ever so predictably, and with arrangements paying little more than lip service to roots. Womack sounds better with less accompaniment ("I Know Why the River Runs," "Thinkin' with My Heart Again") and best when her drawl prevails ("Does My Ring Burn Your Finger"). And she sounds unbeatable when she's totally involved, as on the best song, "I Feel Like I'm Forgetting Something." And who cowrote that? Why, Lee Ann did. It's the only such song here, but somebody should take a hint. --John Morthland

I love this recording of I Hope You Dance and the philosophy of life to participate. This song is especially significant to me because a friend who was having surgery for an aneurysm had a celebration of his life and this was the song that we sang with him at the party before his surgery. He made an incredible recovery and is still with us.

I remember the day my friend's young teenage daughter Lee Anne belted out a slightly off-key Karaoke version of her near namesake Lee Ann Womack's 'I Hope You Dance' and introduced me to this strong female Nashville voice. A quick trip to the music store later, I owned the DANCE cd, my first prolonged exposure to the somewhat more mainstream sound than is common both to previous and subsequent Womack offerings.

It's beautiful music, the critics be damned.

The title track gives durable counsel that nicely balances the countrified pathos of other songs, like the mellifluous and touching 'Stronger Than I Am'.

Truth is, there's not a mediocre track on this album, thanks to some solid if predictable accompaniment, witty writing, and Womack's ever agreeable voice.

Even songs that threaten to plod ('I Know Why the River Runs') come alive when the singer's crescendoing surge rises to meet the track laid down by the base and percussion. Each track comes alive in its own way.

Purists long for more twang. But this is solid, soulful, mainstream country.

Easy listening country.......2005-07-09

When Lee Ann released her debut album, she was acclaimed as the new standard bearer for traditional country music. Her second album reinforced that status but this third album finds Lee Ann moving towards an easy-listening style although this is still essentially a country album. Following this album, Lee Ann made a significant step away from country with her next two albums (one of which was a Christmas album) but then returned to her roots with a much more traditional country album. Thus, Lee Ann has tried various styles but her wonderful voice always sounds great.

The big hit here is, of course, I hope you dance, which crossed over to the American pop charts and even became a minor UK hit - no mean achievement in an era when country singles rarely become big pop hits. Apart from I hope you dance, there are many other great songs here including I feel like I'm forgetting something (a great up-tempo song to get those toes tapping), Lonely too (an excellent ballad written by Bruce Robison, a brilliant singer-songwriter), Lord I hope this day is good (a cover of a Don Williams classic), Does my ring burn your finger (written by Buddy and Judy Miller, an under-rated folk-country duo), Ashes by now (a cover of Rodney Rowell song) and Why they call it falling (a brilliant ballad).

This high-quality album should still please most traditional country fans, if not quite as much as Lee Ann's first two albums, while also pleasing fans of contemporary country.

I bought this CD to play at work for background music and it's great for that. The only thing missing is the usually obligatory 20th Century Fox theme before the main Star Wars theme. Other than that, the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus do a very fine job with Maestro Williams' music, indeed.
