By turns mournful and mystical, these 14 Celtic lullabies performed by musicians from around the world give voice to the experience of mother and child in haunting, evocative folk songs. "More often than not," veteran Irish singer Nóirín Ní Riain writes in the liner notes, "a true lullaby is more indicative of the mental state of the mother than of her wish to lull her child to sleep, and so often her frustrations find a legitimate voice through song." Celtic Twilight 3: Lullabies will become a bedtime favorite, both for its lulling pull to sleep for baby and the numinous, soothing tones of old-country songs for parents winding down at the end of the day. --Stefanie Durbin

5 out of 5 stars Best Lullabies for Baby and for MOM!.......2007-05-31

This Audio CD is a wonderful gift for anyone who is expecting, it soothes mom as well as baby. I love this CD and play it often at night when I am winding down.

5 out of 5 stars Received unexpectedly and love it!.......2007-05-19

I received this as a gift from one of the artists. I am the "Christina" of track 6 - Alasdair Fraser was a friend of the family and wrote tunes for each of us as a thank you for hosting him. My piece was a slow air/waltz, but I never heard it performed until I received a copy of this CD from him.

Not only am I thrilled with the beautiful arrangement of "my" song, I love the other songs on the album as well. The music is wonderfully relaxing, and I look forward to playing it for my children to introduce them to Celtic music. I'm still a Gaelic singer, too...:)

5 out of 5 stars Great shower gift for expecting moms!.......2007-03-05

I bought this first Celtic Twilight, Vol. 3: Lullabies CD right after I had my first baby. It has such beautiful music, and is not some of the sickly sweet lullaby music that you get on so many other CDs.

It has been a wonderful ritual that we have before we go to bed so that my son can settle down and go to sleep. By track 2, he's usually snoring! I'm buying another copy of the same CD for my second baby so that she can have the same soothing sounds to drift off to sleep.

I would highly recommend this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Twilight Lullabies.......2007-01-15

This is a wonderful album. As is often the case with lullabies, they seem more for the pleasure of adults than for children. My grandchildren find this album quite soothing as do their parents. We all listen to the songs over and over and think it is very relaxing album.

5 out of 5 stars Love It, So Beautiful, Angelic Lullabies.......2006-12-02

I absolutely love this CD. It reminds me of songs my Irish grandmother would sing to me.
Ethereal voices sing Irish lullabies. The music is soft, serene and intensely rich. I believe this music will work for all ages from a newborn to 100+.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Intoxicating Listening Experience.......2007-01-13

Anyone who loves Celtic music or who is simply caught up in the new age inspired by the Lord Of The Rings trilogy will adore this CD. The tragic, romantic Irish legend of Deirdre is brought to stunning melodic life - Mychael Danna and Jeff Danna have created a harmonious, haunting ensemble with a variety of instruments, including uillean pipes, higland pipes, penny whistles and the Celtic harp. If you feel that you are being transported back and time and are seeing this story unfold you are not alone. I was throughly enchanted by this CD and I feel all the more proud of my Celtic and Anglo-Saxon roots because of it. Sit back, enjoy, and prepare to be enthralled!

4 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-01-06

I purchased another CD from Mychael and Jeff Danna, "The Legend of Liadain and Curithir" and wanted to see if their other works were just as good. They didn't disappoint. The music on "The Legend of Deidre" is very moving and pulls the listener in. Not to mention I love being able to read the actual legend that inspired the music.

5 out of 5 stars Lost in a living legend.......2006-08-07

The brothers O'Danna have done an excellent job on this recording. Every time I listen to it, I feel like I'm immersed in the Legend of Deirdre. The orchestration is balanced yet creative, the portrayals epic yet believeable, and the songs unique yet unified.
Bagpipes feature heavily in these recordings, so you might not care for some of the songs if you don't like that sound. I, however, was utterly enchanted by the CD despite my predisposition against that instrument.
"A Celtic Tale" is haunting in its beauty, and I cried over its songs more than once. If you love the Celtic style and enjoy an emotional musical setting, then this CD is definitely for you.

4 out of 5 stars No legend story on this disc - be forewarned.......2006-06-25

I bought "A Celtic Tale" to replace a copy I had bought years ago that had gone bad. The thing that I liked best about the disc was the legend that was told on the disc, so, boy, was I surprised when the new one I ordered just has the music with no story. The music is very good, but, if you are looking to hear the story, apparently it's been removed from a newer release somehow, and, for what reason I don't know, because it was a good story.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2006-02-11

This is a beautiful album. When I listen to the music, I can clearly see the story unfolding in my mind. The music really "gets me" in my stomach.

Eileen Ivers is one of the guest musicians on this, the solo album from the tin whistle virtuoso of the all-female Irish American folk band Cherish the Ladies. Like Ivers, Madden is a Senior All-Ireland champion on her instrument and has modernized traditional tunes by adding synthesizers (courtesy of producer and new-age star Brian Keane) and electric bass. On this all-instrumental album, Madden doesn't pursue Ivers' improvisational flights but rather an atmospheric lushness of sound. At times, the recording threatens to lapse into mood music, but the sturdiness of the traditional tunes and the piercing purity of Madden's tone prevent that. Instead the pop touches merely provide an inviting setting for the lyrical whistle lines. --Geoffrey Himes

This really is exquisite. Each tune is beautifully played and there is enough variety in the CD to keep it interesting and to satisfy virtually any listener.

5 out of 5 stars Keep rediscovering this CD.......2007-06-04

It should be obvious from all the other 5 star reviews that this CD is something special. I have owned this recording for years, but I am posting today because I find it to be one of those albums that haunts you. Every so often, out of the blue, I think of one of the tracks and have to drag it out again.

A world class artist at the top of her form, masterfully recorded. How can you go wrong?

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-05-17

this is the music that I used at my pre-wedding ceremony and it is wonderful the mood it sets is unmatched.
Great music a must have for any Irish music lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Tunes for Irish whistle with a variety of lush accompaniments.......2006-10-02

Such sweet sounds from such a simple instrument! Joanie Madden's plaintive whistle playing is full of expressive nuance, and this album showcases her talent, versatility and soul. The arrangements by Madden and Brian Keane of mostly traditional tunes are richly arranged and feature a variety of instrumental accompanists, including Keane on guitars, synthesizers and string orchestrations, John Doan on harp guitar, John Whelan on accordion, Carol Thompson on Celtic harp, Eileen Ivers on fiddle, Jerry O'Sullivan on Uilleann pipes, John Boswell on piano, and Glen Velez and Emedin Rivera on percussion. Beginning with an original, achingly beautiful lament that accrues layers of accompaniment as it lilts along, the album then proceeds to alternate between orchestrated numbers and pieces with a more traditional feel. My favorites are the livelier ones like #7, with cool hand percussion by Glen Velez, and the funky #3, with whistling that's more breath than tone. #12 has an adventurous, almost cowboyish feel to it, while #10 is a lovely, mysterious solo piece. As one might expect from a CD released by Hearts O' Space, the predominant mood of the other selections is laid back and relaxing, and as one might expect from a CD produced by Brian Keane, the music is a fusion of traditional acoustic instrumentals with synthesizers and other modern-style accompaniments. I'm not sure I care for the orchestrations here--they're pleasant enough, but when applied schmaltzily and repeatedly to a genre like Celtic music, they can have the effect of watering down the traditional tunes rather than enhancing them--rather like elevator-music versions of rock songs. I think I prefer a folksy edge. Nonetheless, the music on "Song of the Irish Whistle" is warm, heartfelt, and certainly enjoyable to listen to. The follow-up to this album, "Song of the Irish Whistle 2" is very similar in style and presentation, so if you like 1, you're sure to like 2 as well. Other heartfelt, richly-orchestrated arrangements of Celtic and Celtic-inspired music can be found on Will Millar's "Journey of the Celts," Bruce Huron's "Celtic Legend," another album with the same name - Llewellyn's "Celtic Legend,"Jennifer Cutting's "Ocean: Songs for the Night Sea Journey, David Downes' "Celtic Woman," the compilation album "Celtic Circle," and anything by Secret Garden.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely mesmerizing.......2006-06-01

I first heard this CD being played in a shop at a mall. I told my wife I was going to have to leave for a while, I was crying and didn't understand why. This album touches the soul, bypasses the thought processes and goes directly to the center of your being. One of the all time best musical offerings.

Under the skilled and intuitive guidance of musician and composer Michael Hoppe on keyboards, Afterglow is a collaborative effort of deep sensual beauty and full-figured elegance. With such improvisational songs as "Shadows Fall," the driving pulse of Martin Tillman's cello intensifies the mindful meandering of flutist Tim Wheater's rounded tones. And on the bittersweet "A Thousand Whispers," Tillman's strings take on a boldly brooding neoclassicism bearing out the project's premise to have "deeply felt performances" supercede all other motives. Elsewhere, as on "The Listening Wind," Wheater's melodies float, quiver, and reverberate a pattern of primitive lines in contrast to Tillman's innovative, plucky tick-tock. Built solely on the nonwritten structures set by Hoppe, the emotionally rich and relaxing Afterglow is the spontaneous, supple, and spirited union of three of the most masterful soloists of instrumental music. --Paige La Grone

4 out of 5 stars Another good one by Mychael & Jeff.......2007-05-03

I had one of their other CDs and wondered if this would be as good. It is.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-01-06

I really enjoyed this cd. I had heard a sample of it while in a pet shop and had to have it. The music really pulls you in. Not to mention the bit of history you get reading the legend of Lladain and Curithur that is provided in the jacket. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys instrumentals that tell a story.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Solo Soprano.......2006-08-25

Just heard this CD for the first time and....WOW!!! What amazing vocals ....the soprano voice is so delicate and pure... simply sublime...The emotion of the singer was truly beautiful and made the experience of listening to the CD a magical experience.

1 out of 5 stars Lifeless & Bland .......2006-08-08

My decision to buy this CD was based on a combination of previous reviews and the theme of the piece; both, as it turned out, extremely misleading.
This could have been, should have been, a great CD. The theme is romantically rich with possibilities galore and the artists involved are obviously talented and gifted, but this is not a great CD. It isn't even a good one. There's a strange flatness and utter lack of passion in the performances of these pieces that I find absolutely baffling. Even the orchestral passages sound weak and faded without any richness or depth.
The one and only exception, the only real high point of all 12 selections is "Dia Dha Mo Chaim". This is positively exquisite and the only reason I gave this CD any stars at all. It's beauty and mastery serve to show just how good these folks can be when they set their minds and hearts to it. Why they failed to make the effort on the 11 remaining cuts is sadly bewildering.
If you want beautiful music with a Celtic feel, created and presented with a romantic passion that'll knock your socks off, forget this watered down dud and check out Enaid's (David Arkenstone) "Avalon" or David Arkenstone's "Music Inspired by Middle Earth" & his "Spirit Of Ireland".

5 out of 5 stars A Celtic Romance: The Legend of Lladain and Curithur.......2006-03-16

A featured soloist with the Irish choral group Anuna, Meav garnered raves for her vocal contribution to the London and New York productions of Riverdance. A soprano with the surprising quality of a light and tightly focused pitch, the young vocalist steps out with her self-titled debut of Celtic traditional and classical pieces. Alternately accompanied by an Irish band or swelling orchestra, Meav's tones ring with bell-like clarity, and she seems to effortlessly unspool sound, moving from natural range to head voice with no shrill or heavy accents. Particularly lovely are renditions of the opening theme from the film Rob Roy, the Celtic traditional "She Moved Through the Fair," and "One I Love," a largely a cappella number that'll give you goose bumps. --Paige La Grone

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Her voice is perfection!.......2006-10-18

This is the second CD I purchased by Meav, the first being her Silver Sea. Her voice is just so clear and perfect. Every song on this CD is excellent. Ailein Duinn, is my favorite. An old Gaelic song, that is heartbreakingly beautiful. The music is traditional Irish, Gaelic or English. Celtic Prayer is a new song with a traditional feel, same with One I Love. None of these songs are boring. All of them have wonderful melodies. Si Do Mhaimeo i is upbeat and very powerful. Meav is a very talented artist. The arrangements on these songs and the song selection will delight anyone with an appreciation for good, traditional music.

5 out of 5 stars SWEET LARK.......................2006-10-03

I first heard Maev sing in the Celtic Woman Show and was mesmerized by her voice. After wearing my Celtic Woman CD out I picked up this littel Gem and WOW, I enjoy her now more than ever. Now I'm going to have to pick up her other CD'S. My only problem is which one should I buy next. I enjoy all the girls on the Celtic CD,but Meav I think is one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2006-05-29

This is now one of my favorite CD's. This one puts Celtic Woman to shame!!! She has such a lovely voice, and is wonderful to listen to. I am now going to buy her other two CD's.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2006-03-18

My daughter loves Celtic Woman, so we got her Meav for her birthday. It is excellent, and if you love oboe and English horn, there is a lot of that in the orchestrations!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, soulful, ethereal..........2006-03-05

What a lovely CD! Easy on the ears, stirring and soothing by turns. Elegant and tuneful soprano lines, well-sung, with gorgeous instrumentals - what's in it to be bad?

The original in the internationally popular Hearts of Space series, Celtic Twilight is a collection of 14 pieces: 8 from the label's artist stable of recordings--including a quartet of compositions from HOS stalwart Bill Douglas--and 6 from other carefully selected artists. An instrumental recording, save for the standout "Ancient Pines" from singer-instrumentalist Loreena McKennitt and the Bill Douglas closer featuring soprano Jane Grimes, Celtic Twilight combines traditional Celtic whistles, acoustic strings, and bagpipes with contemporary keyboards. Gentle, lilting and romantic, these songs are the music of the ocean and rolling green hills, of that magical pink-sky time of evening when the lines between myth and reality blur in a most pleasing fashion. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars The second time I've had this album..........2007-07-04

I owned this album as a cassette tape years ago, and though the tape wore out a long time ago I've been wanting to replace it for quite a while. I finally went ahead, and I'm loving it as much as I loved it as a teenager. I'm glad I didn't forget about this cd. I highly recommend it for anyone who likes upbeat, light celtic tunes.

5 out of 5 stars A great series from Hearts of Space.......2006-10-23

I'm an old radio fan of Hearts of Space and have vol. 1-6 of their Celtic Twilight series. To me, they have the best Celtic sounds. Think Braveheart soundtrack style music with lots of emotion behind it. The bagpipes often steal the show by the way they are played in some of the songs. I used to hate the sound of bagpipes. But never these.

The series includes some of my favorite performers: Bill Douglas, Joanie Madden, and Mychael Danna.

This music is completely different and unique from the so-called New Age Celtic stuff being pumped out today.

5 out of 5 stars Dreams of Green, Rolling Hills and Rocky Crags.......2006-03-05

I originally purchased this CD in a Discovery Channel store in the mid-90's that was playing it on their stereo system. What I heard was very awe-inspiring, and even today the music still moves me in that same manner. However, Celtic music is more than music played on traditional Irish instruments; indeed, that music is defined by the moods the music creates rather than just the instruments utilized.

This recording takes me on a journey to green, rolling hills and rocky crags while my mind is bathed in the musical waves exuded in the various selections. In some scenes, one soars high overhead those green hills and crags, whereas in others one may participate in a traditional Irish gig in "Diamond Dance," or experience the grim determination and gentleness of the "Women of Ireland."

The loneliness and sorrow of a lost love can be realized in Mychael Danna's "Deidre of the Sorrows," a theme, if you will, of the play of the same title by the late 19th-Century Irish playwright John M. Synge. "Sweet Rain" evokes visions of a soft, spring rain while walking through a country meadow.

Perhaps the most revealing music on this CD is John Boswell's "Skye Boat Song." In it, the traditions, beliefs, hopes and dreams of the Irish people are elegantly portrayed in a melody that is both haunting and ethereal.

"Sky 7" is undoubtedly the most moving piece of music in the program. It cements the moods portrayed in "Skye Boat Song" while evoking celestial feelings of wonderment and awe that we all share while contemplating our place in the Cosmos.

The CD concludes with Bill Douglas' "Deep Peace," a melody which could be thought of as a lullaby and serves as a peaceful ending to the program.

"Celtic Twilight" is an emotional, musical journey of the traditions Ireland has to offer. I recommend this CD to those who wish to musically explore Ireland, its people, and its traditions.

4 out of 5 stars Celtic highlight!.......2003-08-12

I bought this CD because it looked very mysterious with the title and the cover picture and all. I've picked a few CD's because of their covers, and it hasn't always been a pleasant surprise... This time, however, I was not dissappointed. The album has this true Celtic feeling over it, and when I sit at my room listening to it I can see the beautiful landscapes of Ireland clearly before me. There are so many CD's of Celtic and Irish music, and a lot of them are just garbage. I'm very happy to say this wasn't. The tracks I liked the most will have to be track nr 1: John Doan with Farewell, track nr 4: Joanie Madden with Women of Ireland, nr 6: Bill Douglas with Windhorse and nr 9: Radhika Miller with Origins. Origins is the album's best track. It's very emotional and makes me want to cry, simply because it's so great. If you like Celtic music, you should buy this album.

Circle of Moons by Bill Douglas is one of those disks that I can't say enough about. In a musical culture that is dotes so much on chest-thumping rhythm and pretty faces, what a refreshing delight to happen upon a relatively unknown artist who is about nothing but melody, pure and simple. But isn't that the way it always has been? Listening to this disk takes me to a gallery studying Monet, Cezanne and Renior. The piano solo, "Into the Twilight" could be discribed as syncopated Debussy. This is not rock and roll, folks; nor is it, by a long shot, anything resembling sappy, sing-song dribble for the Geritol set. This is serious music that lies somewhere in between. Douglas also gives attention to that much maligned instrument, the bassoon; that absent-minded baritone of the double reeds; the jokster of the orchestra. Here, as on his other disks, it is given the full respect that it is due; carring melody as well as three, four part harmony. To be honest, like any other collection, Circle of Moons does have slightly weaker pieces than others. But if you are the type who apreciates thoughtful yet very mellow arrangements, this title will by no means disappoint

5 out of 5 stars Music that enters your heart........1998-07-02

Pure and simple - this CD aims straight for your heart and soul- music that takes you to the "heavens" and the "moons".

Album Description

Celtic Twilight 7: Sacred Spirit weaves a Celtic knot of sacred music from antiquity to the present. The central feature of the Celtic worldview is the intimate relationship of humans with the natural world--"a holy intimacy between the human and the divine in nature"--and "a sense of spirit presences in nature" as Thomas Berry says. This feeling is expressed in many of the pieces on this album. A very similar worldview infuses the music of the brilliant 12th century German visionary Hildegard von Bingen. Like the Celts, Hildegard believed that the natural world is a Divine creation, filled with Divine beauty and Divine energy, and this is the theme of her songs. Some of the best Celtic artists have recognized their kinship with her and have made her music their own. This album features several songs by Hildegard in unique arrangements that are so radiantly Celtic in spirit, they almost transport the listener to the holy wells of Ireland. Also featured are top-notch Irish choir Anúna, great Celtic artists Áine Minogue and Cathie Ryan, brilliant English cellist Matthew Barley, virtuoso fiddler Mark O'Connor and his Appalachia Waltz Trio, the perfectly-tuned English choir The Cambridge Singers, and the wonderful Medieval/Eastern fusion ensemble Stellamara.

5 out of 5 stars "THIS IS A WINNER"...Heavenly and Mystical...........2007-03-15

ALL MUSIC GUIDE reviewer Thom Jurek, tells why you will love this CD. He says:
"These original songs and interpretations are rendered in forms of sonic poetry that appeal to that which is sacred inside the individual as opposed to underscoring a particular tradition....This is a winner. Forget tags like "new age" and "Celtic," and simply breathe it all in. It washes one's head -- and perhaps even heart -- clean for a time, and opens the world up for a little while".

I am the producer of both this compilation and the "SACRED TREASURES" series. In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and peaceful sacred music. All of the pieces on this compilation are filled with lush harmonies, whether sung by mixed choirs or by soloists, and all are deeply nourishing to the soul.

Different types of music serve different needs, and in today's stressful and fast-paced world, one of the most important and often neglected needs is for time out from that world--to rest in a magical, quiet space of slow, peaceful, beauty. That peaceful beauty is available to you on all of my compilations, including this one, "CELTIC TWILIGHT 7: Sacred Spirit".

Fourth in the family of Celtic Twilight recordings, Celtic Planet is an ambitious, charming, and at times surprising collection of Celtic-inspired music from around the globe. Spain's Celtic-cultured Galician region is represented by the band Fia Na Roca's pipe on "Ou Sube a Terra ou Baixa O Ceo" and by flautist Carlos Nunez's "Two Shores," quite effectively combining Ry Cooder's flavorful guitar playing with soaring flute melody and accordion. Indian singer Sheila Chandra's "Lament of McCrimmon" from Roots and Wings is based on her mastery of drone tones, and "White Wings," an elegant emotive piece utilizing a string quartet and bass recorder is contributed by Norwegian composer Oystein Sevag. Vocalist Kate Power and vocal ensemble Anuna offer more traditional Celtic balladry, and whistler Joanie Madden leads a group including noted accordionist John Whelan in an arrangement of "The Immigrant." Roundly refreshing, Celtic Planet is sure to be enjoyed by those familiar and new to the series. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Nice Music.......2003-08-08

This is a nice collection of relaxing celtic music. Ones to especially listen to are "THe Drowning Plains" and the one by Aiofe.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the Celtic Twilight series, truly beautiful.......2002-11-26

I use this deeply touching music as easily to add a peaceful, misty background to my activities as to provide a focus for meditation. It is also one of my favorites for use with my Healing Touch work The selection of songs and mix of artists from different cultural backgrounds is very well done; each piece is uniquely beautiful, evocative of something different, from lingering sunsets over quiet lakes to the mysteries of walking through a heavy, enfolding fog between the hills to the welcome flicker of friendly fires at night. A very worthwhile addition to your music library.

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Twilight Series the greatest.......2001-01-24

I have purchased all 5 of the celtic twilight series and each one is a 5star for me. This one is as good as all the rest. Soothing and relaxing. Very enjoyable music.

4 out of 5 stars A Lovely "Lament".......2000-05-05

I heard "Lament of McCrimmon" on Live365.com and traced its source to this album. If the rest is as good as this, I will definitely buy it. It has real "tooth' unlike alot of "spacey" Celtic music.

5 out of 5 stars Celtic taken to a brighter level.......1999-12-16

I was introduced to Celtic quite some time ago. This CD has incredible selections. I loved everyone of them. They are calm, soothing, and very relaxing. (track 13 is my favorite accompanied with bag pipes) This is definitely something a Celtic Music lover NEEDS to own. (don't' forget about the first 3)
