The Bronze Collection is a stunning new percussion project, an assemblage of over 50 gongs and cymbals from around the world. Using an unique, inter-cultural palette of his own design, composer Joseph Bertolozzi redefines previous concepts of melody, rhythm and texture with sounds rarely heard together, or in a unified context. You'll hear rhythmic cymbals sing, melodic gongs pulse, and other combinations existing simply as aural events. Emotionally, physically, the music moves you. Using custom mallets, drumsticks, brushes, foot pedals and a bass bow, Bertolozzi combines a discrete mix of high, low, bright, dark, short, sustained, pitched and unpitched gongs, cymbals and roto-toms into a new sonic world. The now-retired Régine Crespin is easily the greatest soprano voice to come out of France since World War II, notable not just for its body and luster but for such an effortless sense of line that you're never aware of the individual notes, only the overall musical idea they're meant to create. This was recorded a bit late in her career and some wobble is apparent. But her characterization of the words--so important in Ravel's precise animal portraits in Histoires Naturelles--is peerless. Too bad that the Satie songs--in terms of quality--veer between serious endeavors and cabaret toss-offs. The disc is filled out by Crespin's performance of Beethoven's concert aria Ah! Perfido, which illustrates why she was a formidable Tosca in her day. --David Patrick Stearns

Knowing many of these recordings from the vinyl issue, I rejoice in being able to get them re-mastered. Bernac was not only Poulenc's great interpreter, but a definitive interpreter of other French art songs (and Souzay's teacher).

Melisande Sings Art Songs.......2002-05-20

Irene Joachim was the perfect Melisande on the stage of the Opera Comique and in the definitive 1942 recording (still available). Here she gives us the French vocal style in all its beauty. This is a memorial to a specific musical sensibility that has all but disappeared, even in France. A few selections were included for historical value, but this was a mistake, given the poor reproduction. Otherwise, there is an admirable over-all clarity of sound.
