3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

5 out of 5 stars "many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

Silva America presents the essential in film music during the period of World Wars ~ "Longest Day:Ultimate World War Movie Theme", featuring some long forgotten cues, 53 to be exact that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.

Released to commemorate the sixth Anniversary of D-Day, never has there ever been such a tribute compilation package from any other label and Silva comes to the forefront ~ featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Paul Bateman, Nic Raine Tony Bremner and Carl Davis as conductors), The Philharmonia (Kenneth Alwyn, Jerry Goldsmith, Mario Klemens and Paul Bateman as conductors) and also the world renown Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple as choir master) ~ what a gathering of talented musicians and singers fill this collection supreme.

The lineup of composers is a Who's Who in the world of film music ~ John Addison, Tomaso Albinoni, Kenneth J. Alford, Paul Anka, John Barry, Arnold Bax, Elmer Bernstein, Eric Coates, Carl Davis, Klaus Doldinger, Antonin Dvorak, Benjamin Frankel, Gerald Fried, Hugo Friedhofer, Jerry Goldsmith, Ron Goodwin, Bernard Herrmann, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Jerome Moross, Alfred Newman, Clifton Parker, Alan Rawsthorne, Ryvichi Sakamoto, Lalo Schifrin, Gerard Schurmann, David Shire, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Williams, Gabriel Yared and Hans Zimmer ~ set the stage for compositional human drama while exploring the deepest troves of musical emotion ~ one masterpiece after another, each cue manages to display both a convincing authenticity of the times and places ~ experience every tracks passion and skill for striking the exotic orchestral colors, explosive power and spectacular works of full large scale orchestral arrangements previal at every turn.

We are grateful to James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reybnold da Silva (executive producer), Rick Clark (associate producer/album sequence), Marion Garden (associate producer) and the whole gang at Silva America who have resurrected many of the soundtracks for the "film-score-buffs" in all of us.

5 out of 5 stars A great collection.......2004-02-28

This is a really fabulous collections of songs. There is a great balance of old and new. This isn't a collection from one single genre and the diversity keeps the mix interesting. It's great to hear songs that wouldn't normally be noticed while a movie is playing and it's also great to hear those easily recognizable tunes from popular movies.

Album Description

Actor and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto is one of the world's best musicians. He creates music with a unique style that combines western, classical, symphonic composition, Japanese traditional sounds and experimental electronic music. Out of print for many years until now, the soundtrack also contains a vocal performance by David Sylvian, best remembered as leader of the popular U.K. rock band Japan.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Forbidden Colours.......2004-10-19

My college roommate bought this when it was released. I have always loved the Forbidden Colours version with David Sylvian's vocals. A real gem of a song.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2004-05-20

This is the soundtrack to the 1983 feature film "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence". Sakamoto, who was in the now-legendary New Wave/synth group Yellow Magic Orchestra, composed and performed the entire evocative score. Addtionally, Sakamoto starred as a Japanese POW camp commandant, along with British POW's Tom Conti and David Bowie (as an Australian commando). The movie, while a disappointment at the box office, is quite an experience; a strange drama set in a Japanese-run POW camp in the Dutch East Indies in World War II, but worth watching. The ending is emotional; you may shed a few tears at the end!

As good as the film is, the soundtrack is stunning, especially the title track; it's haunting, mesmorizing, and powerful. (The only clunker is the David Sylvian vocal on the "reprise" at the end, which was not on the film's soundtrack.)

At the very least, get this brilliant soundtrack!

5 out of 5 stars Essential Sylvian / Sakamoto collaboration.......2003-09-03

This CD disappeared for some time, I remember hunting for years to find it again. This re-release gives fans of the movie and the two artists another chance to listen to a fine Sakamoto piece. Sakamoto was in Yellow Magic orchestra, Sylvian in Japan and then on his own. The collaboration with Sylvian is one of many: Bamboo Music/Bamboo Houses and Sylvian's first 3 solo albums -- all amazing when Sakamoto adds his unique keyboard touches. "Forbidden Colors" stands away from the rest of the album, I think, a wonderful song, one of my favorites.

Buy the movie, it's still available, enjoy Bowie against Sakamoto and Tom Conti's fine performance. Then, you'll need this album.

5 out of 5 stars This is still No.1 in my list of favorite music.......2003-08-12

I watched the movie for the first time when I was 21.

I listened to the entire soundtrack for the first time when I was 18.

I have known the melody of the title theme....since I was in elementary school.

I always whistled this melody without knowing what the music was called or who it was by.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence was the soundtrack of my life.

PS.
I have recently noticed the track #2 on disc #2 of the compilation Clicks & Cuts 3 (on Mille Plateaux), by Antonelli Electr., starts with a melody that is very remniscent of one of the short tracks on Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence. It made me really excited...

4 out of 5 stars Movie music from the master.......2001-11-22

I enjoyed Sakamoto's soundtrack for WINGS OF HONNEAMISE and his composition for the Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Then after hearing an interview with Sakamoto on "World Cafe with David Dye", I decided I wanted more. CINEMAGE is a nice sampling of his various soundtracks and convinced me to get more. His music is very melodic and fits well with each movie, yet each has his distinctive sound. Nice background music for a quiet Saturday afternoon.

5 out of 5 stars totally moving.......2000-11-26

I bought this album because of the song "Forbidden Colours" from the movie "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence". This song alone worth more than the price. It is a perfect masterpiece: the music, the lyrics and sylvian's voice.. my heart just melt whenever I listen to it, yes, everytime. It's so powerful, try it yourself and you will feel it too... (The other famous orchestral tracks are also great... but they became extras to me)

3 out of 5 stars A vexed effort, but valiant.......2000-05-12

Including some of his most renowned themes, CINEMAGE is a collection of works primarily composed to accompany visual events established on film. Known for his syncretism, particularly of East meets West, Sakamoto offers a unique, unabashed glimpse into his melodic universe, remaining one of the few film composers not submerged in the musical polyglot of the Hollywood scene.

Recorded live on tour in 1997, CINEMAGE boasts an unrehearsed, but convincing performance by the Orchestra. Conducted by Sakamoto, with Yutaka Sado, the recording occasionally glistens with the imaginative elements of the music's inception intact. The graceful `Little Buddha' and `The Last Emperor' both evoke a sense of Romanticism and tragedy. `Replica' glimpses into the more playful, jazz-like harmonies of Sakamoto's compositional style, as well as the ferocious 1992 Olympiad theme `El Mar Mediterrani' which is bold, and episodic in nature. The centerpiece of the album lies in `Forbidden Colours' the heart rendering theme of Nagisa Oshima's emotional 1983 film "MERRY CHRISTMAS, MR. LAWRENCE." Along with guest musicians David Torn, DJ Spooky, and David Sylvian, Ryuichi Sakamoto proves that his music has the tenacity to reach farther than the silver screen, and onto the concert stage.

4 out of 5 stars beyond film music?.......2000-03-21

Sakamoto's global fame as a composer and musician may lead to expections of unmerited praise, but don't be mistaken; "Cinemage" is certainly a work that speaks for itself. Utilizing mainly the piano and orchestra, Sakamoto relives some of his paramounts as a film composer in this recording. His technique, interpretation, and composition is beyond doubt; music lovers will enjoy Sakamoto's firm understanding and presentation of such classical elements ranging from Vivaldi to Barber. However, it is observable that the music seems to lack a certain maturity, that which that makes compositions classics instead of another piano-and-bar piece. Sakamoto's phrasing is sometimes abrupt and premature, and perhaps that is to be attributed to the fact that film music will remain film music, lacking the coherence that traditional compositions emphasize. Highlights of the recording include "Forbidden Colours", featuring the most beautiful and emotional piano and vocal parts. "El Mar Mediterrani" borders on the fringe of classical and new age; its sometimes chaotic and erratic melodies are truly inspirational and make this track a gem. All in all, Sakamoto delivers a range of material with such sophistication that reasserts his genius and fame. "Cinemage" is certainly a recording that music lovers cannot afford to miss.

4 out of 5 stars A new--and live--orchestral recording.......2000-03-03

Sony says: CINEMAGE consists of 'New recordings of Sakamoto's best-known music for film and television, including "Forbidden Colours" from Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence with vocal by David Sylvian, the Oscar® winning theme from The Last Emperor, and "El Mar Mediterrani" composed for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Sakamoto on piano is accompanied by a large orchestra in these new arrangements of well-known themes.'

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing Christmas music.......2004-11-12

I've been a CGT fan for years but I never got around to picking this up until recently. I wanted some mellow Christmas music for putting on in the evenings when I've got a fire going and I'm just looking to relax. Overall it's a great CD and I can highly recommend it to anyone. I hate to suggest putting CGT on as background music, but frankly, this CD is perfect for it.

Probably the only song I'm not a big fan of is the first track "Carol of the Bells" which I find merely okay. However the rest of the songs range from great to fantastic (their rendition of Silent Night happily revives that oft played tune for me). If you like classical guitar, then this CD is a must have. If you are serious about music, well you just won't find many Christmas CDs with this kind of musicianship. If you are looking for something relaxing to play at Christmas, this is also a great CD for you. If you are looking for something for something with a bit of kick to it, this isn't your CD. (When I want something like that I tend to throw on Dean Martin or Harry Connick Jr.)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music for the holidays.......2004-09-20

This is a great CD to put on when you want some light holiday music that won't overwhelm you. The guitar work is incredible and they do a great job of putting a fresh spin on some well worn territory. Still you can put it on when you have guest over and still be able to talk and enjoy the company without the distraction of lyrics. It makes for a very comforting background. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, I disagree with previous reviewer........2004-03-05

This CD is great to listen to, from the first track which is a really cool rendition of Carol of the Bells. It is a song that seems perfectly suited to their playing style.

The whole CD is great, as long as you can look past the fact that you will likely not get a present anytime soon despite the christmas songs.

3 out of 5 stars OK Christmas Album.......2003-04-27

There's nothing really wrong with this CD other than it not being what I expected. I was expecting more traditional (perhaps heavier) guitar renditions of various Christmas songs. Instead, the music is lighter and more "California-ish." It'll serve as some background Christmas music, but there's nothing here that really grabs your attention.

3 out of 5 stars not the best.......2002-06-12

This has some good selections but really doesn't have the best because it is so subjective. i certainly got bored with many of the pieces they selected in the group, while others had my foot stomping. i recommend getting the original stuff anyways.

5 out of 5 stars "must have compilation for film buffs".......2000-11-24

Milan Records celebrates the history of popular cinema with a 2-CD anthology of the music that drove the most affectionately remembered films of the modern cinematic era. These indelible musical impressions come courtesy of the most renowned film score composers of our time - Maurice Jarre, Max Steiner, Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Ennio Morricone, Bernard Herrmann, Randy Edelman and Henry Mancini.

Released into two general categories, the album presents moments from films of "Love, Passion & Comedy", on disc one - gives us the most powerful classic love themes from "WEST SIDE STORY", "DR. ZHIVAGO" and "LOVE STORY", and features newer classics from "TITANIC", "THE TRUMAN SHOW", "UNCHAINED MELODY" and on the lighter side "A FISH CALLED WANDA", "BENNY & JOON" and one of the most familiar themes ever written "THE PINK PANTHER" from legendary icon Henry Mancini.

On disc two "ACTION, ADVENTURE & SUSPENSE", includes themes from Alfred Hitchcock's landmark films "NORTH BY NORTHWEST" and the absolutely unforgettable "PSYCHO" finale...then the greatest action hero of all time leads off with Monty Norman's "JAMES BOND THEME", and action cues from "BACKDRAFT" and "SPEED"...next up the Academy Award winning theme from "THE LAST EMPEROR" and "GETTYSBURG" main title, one of the best-selling score CD's of all time.

A must have for "movie-music" collectors and film buffs, including music lovers and anyone who really enjoys a little nostalgia now and then...thank you Milan for this trip down memory lane and the amazing legacy of 20th Century Cinema!
