4 out of 5 stars Memorable.......2007-07-21

Memorable... is the best I can say. It is nice to hear the resounding voice of Johnny Maestro again. The track, "The Worst That Could Happen" is his best since "Sixteen Candles", recorded with the Crests too many years ago !

4 out of 5 stars Great band - Fair compilation.......2007-03-16

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of those bands whose music has never really been properly represented. I wasn't around in the late 1960's or early 1970's so the following info is to the best of my knowledge. The band had 4 albums, 5 if you count the soundtrack for a film titled "Grasshopper" that the band appeared on. The first album was released in '68. It was actually self titled although it has some times been referred to as the "Worst that could happen" album. The second album, know as "The second album" was released in '69. The third album from '70 is where things get tricky. The third album, like the first album was also self titled. When discussing the bands self titled album(s), you have to verify what songs are on it. The third album included a cover of "Nights in white satin." The bands final album was released in I belive '72. This one was titled "Bridge in Blue." If my memory also serves, I belive at that point the band had for some reason shotrened its name to simply "Bridge." This compilation only really represents the 1st two albums. Yes there are a lot of good songs on it. But there could have been more. Songs like "Echo park" and "Nights in white satin" should have been included. It would been nice if someone would release the actual 4 albums on CD. That way no songs are left out. Like my title reads: Great band - Fair compilation.

4 out of 5 stars One of my first CD's...and still one of my favs.......2005-12-30

Back in 2001 I just started getting cd's, and this one was one of my firsts I got. Now even though I've evolved more into the world of Psych. I still listen to this great cd. The songs "Glad She's A Women" and "Blessed Is The Rain" are especially good. They kinda make me feel rested and relaxed. All in all a great compilation of a great group.

4 out of 5 stars A TRULY WONDERFUL COLLECTION. . ........2004-12-29

The former frontman for the legendary Crests and the Del-Satins, Johnny Maestro (John Mastrangelo), took lead vocals once again with this late 60s/early 70's pop vocal group. Unusually large at ten to eleven members, their sound was smooth and heartfelt (think Fifth Dimension crossed with the Association). They signed with Buddah and issued their first LP in 1969, scoring big with "The Worst That Could Happen" and "Blessed Is The Rain". Their subsequent LPs failed to generate the same sales as the debut, even though finely textured songs such as "Your Husband My Wife" and "Minstrel Sunday" continued their beautiful, romantic style. Kudos to the Collectables label for issuing a Best Of on LP, and eventually on CD. Twelve slices of Pop heaven, led by the incomparable Johnny Maestro. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Fifty years and going strong.......2007-04-13

Hard to believe, but 2007 marks 50 years since The Crests first charted with "Sweetest One", which should have been included on this CD, along with "My Juanita". It's still a great CD, with the amazing voice of Johnny Maestro singing lead, and superb backing vocals from J. T. Carter, Tommy Gough and Hal Torres. If you google "Johnny Maestro", the first listing should be for his official website, and e-mail can be sent to the guys there.

5 out of 5 stars How great is Johnny Maestro?.......2007-01-09

I can't believe this man's voice. Everything he sings is outstanding!
Wish I could see him in person, locally in Baltimore. Also wish I could email him.

3 out of 5 stars Good but..........2005-03-26

.... it only gets 3 stars because it is missing the essential Crests' first - "My Juanita" from 1958.

5 out of 5 stars Best Sound Yet For Johnny Maestro.......2001-10-20

I have virtually every CD by Johhny Maestro both with the Crests
and with the Brooklyn Bridge. In fact I booked Johnny many years
ago.

This is THE BEST sound quality I have ever heard
for the Crests.Every song is crisp&clear.Mastered with love.

Carey Mansfield and the crew at Varese Sarabande deserve kudos.Mastering by Marty Wekser is crisp and warm unlike other Crests disc which are either muddy 4th Generation or overly boosted and tinney.

Album Description

This recital gives a fascinating insight into the many influences on Cuban culture: among them 400 years of Spanish colonial rule and 60 years of exposure to North American culture prior to the 1959 revolution. The music ranges across Afro-Cuban rhythms, twentieth century harmonies, elements of jazz and impressionism, traditional European forms of composition, the country dance form known as the son montuno, and contemporary harmonization of Yoruba melodies from the Oriente region.

4 out of 5 stars Solo Cuban Guitar Music Highlighted in Diverse Program.......2005-04-24

This is a highly listenable recording from Naxos spotlighting the importance of Cuban solo guitar music. The talented guitarist is Marco Tamayo, and the selections reflect a compendium of the finest among Cuban composers: Ñico Rojas, the self taught guitarist, composer and leading figure in the filin (feeling) movement; Harold Gramatges, the prolific and much respected classical composer; Moisés Simons, the composer of the popular "El Manicero" ("The Peanut-Seller"), credited here to Edward Simons; and Leo Brouwer, an otherwise avant-garde experimentalist. Although many of the arrangements are within the soft-jazz, Earl Klugh-like space, the pieces do not belie their Cuban heritage and range from the traditional dance genres such as zapateo, guiajira and son pregón, through Rojas' jazz-influenced harmonies to Gramatges' neo-classical miniatures.

The tone can be at once seductive and then later inspirational, yet what remains consistent is Tamayo's delicate and assured playing, which beautifully conveys the gentle relaxed quality of these works, Some pieces stand alone, such as "El Manicero" (which some may recognize as a variation of the tropical song Judy Garland sang in the "Born in a Trunk" number in "A Star Is Born") or the "Preludio" (the theme from the film "Soy Cuba") and "Canción Triste" by Carlos Fariñas. The remainder function as part of short suites, for instance, the lovely canción-danza pairing by Aldo Rodriguez, which gives a nice structure to otherwise disparate musical styles. The last eight tracks represent an adaptation of Yoruba religious music by Hector Angulo. Quite beautiful and atmospheric on their own, these short pieces convey some intriguing rhythmic drive and complexity that seem odd for a guitar by itself to express. But the Cuban-born Tamayo (now teaching master classes in Salzburg at the Mozarteum) shows impressive dexterity in capturing such emotions on the guitar. As a whole, the album reveals a repertoire well worth discovering and another dimension of Cuban music beyond salsa and the Buena Vista Social Club. This is another of Naxos' discounted recordings ($6.98), an excellent purchase.

5 out of 5 stars marco tamayo plays cuban guitar music.......2004-03-31

With so many guitarists recording the classical guitar standards , this is a refreshing album with largely unknown but also very interesting guitar compositions which are pleasant and substantial. The pieces give a good overview of guitar composers from cuba, played by Marco Tamayo, who is refreshingly musical and technically on top of his playing.

5 out of 5 stars Guitar music.......2007-02-12

This is an amazing CD. I recommend it highly for reading on a rainy day, relaxing, or just reading the paper on a Sunday morning. It's one of my top 10 relaxation CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD all around!.......2005-08-30

I got this CD because I am a massage therapist, and refuse to buy
those cheesey new agey relaxation CD's.I was finally getting a little tired of the bach cello concertos and a couple of other classical recordings that had been deemed "relaxing",and decided to try this one.It is great!I never seem to get tired of it!I have not had a client that didn't love it.Most even ask what it is because they like it so much.Based on the success of this CD,I am going to try the Cello For Relaxation CD in the same series.I hope that it is just as much of a hit!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully relaxing!.......2005-05-09

This CD definitely lives up to it's name. Julian Bream's guitar playing is ethereal and leaves your mind in a state of blissful relaxation...A wonderful collection! Well worth the investment!

5 out of 5 stars Very Relaxing, Highly Recommended!.......2005-05-03

I find myself choosing this CD whenever I want to unwind. It is absolutely exquisite. I have bought quite a few different "relaxation" CD's, and this is my favorite.

4 out of 5 stars Has hard-to-find pieces by Bream.......2003-02-20

Despite a title sure to embarrass any self-respecting music snob, this is no less than a full disc of nicely mastered solo guitar recordings by the great Julian Bream (a string quartet joins Bream on one track). If these pieces could be easily found elsewhere, on albums with more continuity, then this disc wouldn't be worth buying. But probably 40% of the material on this cd can't be found in print, to my knowledge. In particular, the Mompou, Mozart, Llobet, Aguado, Henze, and Diabelli tracks aren't readily available elsewhere as of early 2003. Several of these tracks are nice hefty 6-7 minute pieces. In particular, the beautiful Andante from Diabelli's Sonata, arranged by Bream himself, is worth the purchase price by itself. If you're a Bream fan trying to get beyond his half-dozen easily available cds, add this to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars The classical heritage .......2006-04-16

The visible embellishment of this noble instrument was enriched still more by the Spanish composers, who following the traces of his contemporaries. In the case of Fernando Sor, Haydn was his musical guide, where as Aguado, could establish himself with major vehemence, due its particular style, based in the notable right-hand articulation, eschewed the classical patterns, being able to print his own music a flamboyant and refined character.

In the particular case of Fernando Sor, we have a wisdom blending of the counterpoint technique, an evocative mood from his own that, added the well known influence of the Italian composers (Domenico Cimarrosa and Giovanni Batista Pergolesi) and his beloved love for the Operatic genre, allowed him to enrich still more the lyrical possibilities of the guitar. Besides, unlike Nicolo Paganini, for instance fortunately did not transform the guitar in a simple device to show his overwhelming gifts. He used the guitar to play music, on the opposite approach of Paganini who used the music as mere device to play his instrument.

In the guitar genre there has not been most deserved and superb tribute to Mozart that this Variations Op. 9 based on a motive of The most famous Mozart ?s Magic Flute. Loaded of such imaginative freshness and enraptured inspiration you may notice that one of the Variations conserves an undeniable Italian flavor; this is one of the most beloved hidden treasures the guitar can offers us, which raise with special charm in the hands of this formidable soloist.

Aguado on the contrary acquired due his personal state of things, a notable adroitness who excelled by far, to Sor, so his musical approaches rode in opposite directions, trying to exploit at maximum levels the technical possibilities of the instrument.

Julian Bream makes a colossal tribute to both composers in this egregious and golden album.

This final chapter of Peter Jackson's sprawling adaptation of Tolkien's "Ring" trilogy closes out one of the most accomplished cycles in cinema--and film music--history. As he's done for the saga's first two installments, composer Howard Shore has honed a mature, brooding orchestral masterpiece that's long on subtle shadings of mood and nuance, while eschewing the hollow bombast that's characterized all too many mainstream action and adventure films for three decades. If anything, he's pared this chapter of his music for Middle Earth even closer to the bone, the trilogy's familiar themes repeated with a sparing hand that only heightens their dramatic power. Like Herrmann before him, Shore has a preternatural understanding of orchestral timbres and their almost mystical connections with human emotions, and he's used it here to close out this remarkable trilogy with Wagnerian dramatic sweep, yet one with a distinctly modern, understated melodic sense that is Shore's alone. James Galway and Renee Fleming make key instrumental and vocal contributions, respectively, while Annie Lennox's soulful "Into the West" makes the expected, if unobtrusive, bow to the theatrical pop song conventions. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars The stuff of legends!.......2006-10-02

What can I say that hasn't already been said about Howard Shore's magnificent score for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy? A soundtrack can define the whole atmosphere of a film, and this fully orchestrated work certainly does that with sweep, splendor and wonder, alternately humanizing (hobbit-izing?) the characters, imbuing the landscape with magic and capturing the world-shaking impact of events of mythic proportions. And this was no easy task considering the iconoclastic status of the story and the superb quality of Peter Jackson's filmmaking. This is a truly a soundtrack for the ages--a fitting accompaniment to a film for the ages! Every aspect of life, from the extreme to the mundane, is captured in this music. Listening to it can make every remembered moment of the movie come alive again in your mind, from the most horrific battle to the smallest moment of humor or kindness. And the battle scenes in "Return of the King" are incredible visuals, blending live action and computer-generated imagery so seamlessly and densely that it boggles the mind. But what would they be with only screams and snorts and scuffles to give them voice? It's Shore's frenetic, string-laden, brass-filled, drum-spurred fury that truly gives them life, waxing, waning and cueing the audience as to when the greatest menace is about to threaten the war-weary heroes. The musical themes from the first two movies continue to be developed here, wending their way in and out of expanded interpretations whose dense complexity rivals that of Tolkien's story, not to mention Peter Jackson's filmmaking itself. The total effect is utterly convincing and utterly transporting. Peter Jackson chose well when he picked Shore as his score writer. Very, very well! Be sure to get the scores from the other two movies in the trilogy as well - "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Two Towers." They seem to be available in no end of different packagings, including ones with bonus DVDs about the creation of the score. Also, make sure to get the extended edition DVDs of the movie itself, with hours and hours of fascinating commentaries and behind-the-scenes documentaries about the making of the films. Truly a bargain at any price! And for authentic music from bygone ages, try the real thing! There are many fine groups out there. Here's just a sampling: Anonymous 4 (pure-voiced sacred chant by four women), The Baltimore Consort (jaunty popular music from the Renaissance), David Munrow's Early Music Consort of London (simply perfection), Christian Mendoze's Musica Antiqua (lively, percussive Renaissance dance music), The Toronto Consort (great variety), Ensemble Unicorn (worlds of fun!), Wolgemut (brash buzzies and bagpipes with attitude), and the magical early/folk fusion of Cantiga and Burlap Lute. Have some fun with them and live your own fantasy!

5 out of 5 stars Best Soundtrack Ever.......2005-05-27

When I was watching the movies, I would hum along with the music. I finally bought the soundtrack, and I absolutely love it. It completely captures Middle Earth, and it's cultures and themes. I never really liked classical music or that sort of thing, but I can not stop listening to the Lord of the Rings Soundtracks. The Return of the King is my favorite. My favorite tracks are 2- Hope and Memory, 8- Twilight and Shadow(the elvish music is so relaxing and comforting!), 17- The Return of the King, and 19- Into the West. I really shouldn't say I have a favorite because all of the tracks are so SPECTACULAR. This album didn't win an Oscar for nothing, it truly is the best.

5 out of 5 stars Howard Shore - A Brilliant Composer.......2004-07-04

I love the movies and love the soundtracks also! Howard Shore is a brilliant composer.
I heard that late this year or in 2005 will be released a BoxSet with 9 CDs of the complete LOTR Movies Soundtracks in Extended Editions. It's a box with the complete soundtracks to all the LOTR Trilogy Movies as seen on screen - Theatrical Versions - YES!
It will be 2 CDs for FOTR, 3 for TT and another 3 for ROTK and an extra CD with rarities and unreleased music from the films with commentary from Howard himself!!
What a BIG surprise!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and Inspiring.......2004-04-28

This CD is perhaps one of the most inspiring CDs I have ever heard. I am an aspiring author, and several tracks have provided inspiration for themes or characters in my stories, most notably the track The White Tree. That one piece gave me a basis for an entire plotline. Also inspiring was the Riders of Rohan, the Fields of the Pellenor, and The Steward of Gondor.
Getting off the inspirational aspect, the music overall is just stupendous. Howard Shore has clearly showed his mastery in composing, and I hope to hear his works in other upcoming movies.

What a powerful arrangement of a great classic! This is a cd that all music education teachers should have in their classrooms! The kitchen percussion session is a fantastic extension activity to help children make personal connections with the music. For parents, listening to this cd with your child(ren) is a wonderful, interactive way to introduce this classic tale! The accompanying booklet includes short games (e.g., crossword puzzle) and interesting information about various percussion instruments. Very well done!

They called him the "Sorcerer of the Guitar," and with his band, O.K. Jazz, he helped shaped not only the history of Congolese rumba, but also soukous. Franco was a giant, not just physically, but also in reputation, a guitar god every bit the equal of Hendrix or Clapton, but unknown in the West. This first U.S. compilation devoted to his work begins in the mid-1950s, when he was still a teenager, with "Merengue," and runs through 1987, and "Attention Na Sida," his final recording before dying of AIDS two years later. In between you get to understand his genius, not just as an instrumentalist, but also as a singer and writer, his band shading and filling out the music beautifully, while Franco himself produces flurries of notes and fluid runs that call to mind both Wes Montgomery and Ali Farka Toure. Compiled by biographer Graeme Ewens, these songs capture all the facets, from the brief catchy singles, the sizzling live magic, and the extended album tracks--and every one is vital. --Chris Nickson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Franco's Greatest Hits.......2007-01-09

The songs are good and cover a good stretch of his career. I also appreciated the very useful liner notes, giving a background on all of the songs, which are mostly sung in Lingala or French. However, I also have a number of his other recordings, and some great songs were left off of this collection--how about a Vol. II and Vol. III and Vol. IV from the Rough Guide?

3 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2006-01-18

Altho I like some of Franco's music, I was diasappointed. Maybe I would have liked him live. I bet he had a lot of charisma. I just did not enjoy this CD. The songs were too long and somewhat repetitive for my taste. I love the Mali sound and Salif and Babaa Maal and Rough guide to Mali and Guinea and Tuku but this one for me did not ring any bells for very long.

5 out of 5 stars riding with a master.......2003-11-15

This album helps you capture the spirit of a master of african music (franco). From early recordings until the end of a triumphant career, you feel the vibration of the soul of africa at its best.Franco's guitar and voice brings a flashback of history when that continent was a land of strong men and happy go lucky people. This album is really the sound of being genuine...

5 out of 5 stars Congo's best.......2003-07-09

The country that is best known within Africa for its music is Congo, and the musician who is best loved within Congo is Franco. And here is Franco at his best--highlights from early on in his career (starting with "Merengue," clearly showing the Latin influence in what became soukous, Africa's dance music) to late (ending with "Attention na SIDA"--watch out for AIDS--the artist's plea for others to avoid his own fate). My favorite sample of the harmonious vocals and soaring guitar solos (a soukous trademark) is track 7: "Où Est le Sérieux." Great music from a monumental African singer and guitarist.

5 out of 5 stars Superb introduction to Franco.......2002-08-06

While it is possible to obtain many various CDs of the music of Franco and the OK Jazz (also called the TPOK Jazz) in larger stores, there are two very good reasons to recommend this compilation. First, it contains very good liner notes, which provide a wealth of information about Franco, the recordings, the musicians, and the development of Congolese pop music. The notes were written by Graeme Ewens (author of "Congo Colossus: The Life and Legacy of Franco & OK Jazz") who helped select the recordings. [It should be pointed out that informative liner notes are generally not a feature of the African music CDs that have been issued up until now; the Rough Guide series has raised the bar in this regard.] Second, this is a great overview of Franco's career, with recordings from the 1950s through the 1980s. Some of his most popular, as well as most important, songs are showcased here. The recordings are arranged chronologically, guiding the listener through the growth of the OK Jazz from what was basically a band doing Caribbean rumba-style songs into an institution in African music with a distinctive Central African style.

Highly recommended. Good as it is, this should not be your only Franco CD, but it's by far the best selection for a first Franco CD.

The Maestro soundtrack CD is a not-to-be-missed journey through the history of dance music. Some of the most representative, influential, and rare songs that filled the dance-floors back in the day are combined with new tracks and clips from the original motion picture.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ...for the double cd version.......2006-12-08

For some reason, the Maestro soundtrack has been released in Australia as a double compilation with a total 20 tracks, all full length. And it's fantastic. Although the single version is fine I would recommend hunting the 2 cd version as it's far superior to the single. At least one other reviewer has complained of poor sound quality, but again, this doesn't seem to be a problem with the double (although some tracks sound like they were sourced from vinyl). Around the clubs in the 80s but don't recognise many of the tracks listed? Fear not, nearly all of them will be instantly familiar once heard, and if you love melodic house (the nexus of disco, soul and the emerging sound of Detroit techno and acid house) you will adore this. Several recent releases compiling tracks from the Paradise Garage, the Sound Gallery, the Loft, etc feature great music, but for my money the Maestro soundtrack betters them because it manages to incorporate more of the electro sounds of the mid-late 80s, such as The Nightwriters' Let The Music Use You and Mr Fingers' classic Can You Feel It. An outstanding soundtrack for an era which still sounds fresh.

4 out of 5 stars Four stars for NYC Peech Boys alone!.......2005-12-30

Sure the sound quality ain't great, but the track selection of this CD is spot-on, eschewing the more obvious choices to feature some truly underground, much-sought-after tracks, especially the first-ever-on-CD inclusion of the full version of NYC PEECH BOYS' stunning proto-garage track "LIFE IS SOMETHING SPECIAL" - you've heard it sampled countless times on other house tracks, now revel in the orignal's majesty. NOW I wish Island/4th&Broadway would see fit to re-issue ALL the "lost" NYC Peech Boys tracks on a CD compilation - Chris Blackwell, can you feel me?!

4 out of 5 stars I give it two thumbs up! And 4 stars!.......2005-12-25

As en ex Paradise and Loft member I like it. It could have been better but also as a DJ I can tell you what is best about this sound track. THESE ARE UNDERGROUD TRACKS, THAT MADE IT TO MAIN STREAM!
If you like the garage disco era buy this CD, its worth it!
Thank you AMAZON.COM alot of other cites do not have Maestro.

1 out of 5 stars Not what was expected.......2005-10-05

The main problem with this soundtrack is the quality, which was rather poor. Although clear, it has no bass. I've downloaded better quality CDs. Some music is not from the Garage days (e.g., Byron Stingley), though most of the music does represent the era. However, I have yet to find a CD that captures my experience of Larry at the Garage.

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad representation!.......2005-09-09

My only issue with the soundtrack (yes I have the DVD too) is why did they leave the narrative from the documentary over the music in the soundtrack? My copy came as a promo and not sure if this detail was fixed before the retail version came out or not. I agree with others, excellent soundtrack, could have been longer and definitely missed a few of the gems that are in the DVD.
