I'm a HUGE Mantovani fan and have had mixed results trying to upgrade my collection to CDs. This collection is the original orchestra arrangements of all the classics. This is the one to buy.

The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! Perfect Rythm.......2000-03-30

Trichy Sankaran's percussion is fabulous and is aptly titled "Laya Vinyas". After listening to his "Tani" in the album "Lotus Signatures" with Dr. N. Ramani (Flute), I was looking for a full fledged solo and this recording happened to be the perfect find. The tabla track "Carnatic Tabla" is interesting and sounds more like a mridhangam. Accompanying booklet has excellent pictures and description about the art of drumming in both north and south Indian styles.

These CDs were well worth the price. This is only my second purchase of Indian music, and after buying The Language of Rythm, I found an aspect of the music I had never experianced before. Even the rest of my family, who complained of headaches from Anoushka Shankars sitar, enjoyed it.

Perhaps I should start by admitting a bias: Many years ago, lying on Boston's grassy Esplanade by the Charles River on warm summer nights, I learned what a symphony orchestra should sound like, with Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. Those concerts were free; these seven compact discs are not--not quite. But for any lover of light classical music, they are certainly one of the best buys available. The orchestra (essentially the Boston Symphony) is one of the world's greatest; the music, from Smoke Gets in Your Eyes to the Goyescas Intermezzo and Ride of the Valkyries is instantly enjoyable and permanently valuable; the conductor is at the same time genial and exacting, convinced that any music you play, no matter how frivolous, deserves the best you can give it. --Joe McLellan

A Disappointing French Production.......2002-12-08

France is a European hot bed for Indian classical music, with labels such as Makar Records and Radio France's Ocora. Here is Arion, a less meticulate record company, with a DK Pattamal recordind from 1977.

The Pattamal is of course one of the very top names, and the performance is g-o-o-d. Unfortunately, the CD is not. First of all, nothing is listed on the CD (the songs are Shastry's "Birana Varalicci", Jayachamaraja Wadiyer's "Shri Jalandharam", Tiruvettiyur Tyagiyer's "Sami Dayajuda" and Saint Tyagaraja's "Sujana Jivana Rama"), and what basic information is listed is spelt wrong. One can live with that, even though it is pathetic, but what one simply cannot accept is that the tracks FADE OUT as if this was Samantha Fox. In one song, you can even hear the last note at the very end of the fade. This is unforgivable and should not be encouraged by more than one star; however, since this is after all DK Pattamal, I have to put two stars. With a proper production it would have been four or five.
