Guarani Banana

Editorial Reviews

From Jazziz
"Daybreak" comes from Brazilian saxophonist and flutist Zé Luis' new CD, Guarani Banana. The song is in a style associated with a southwestern region of Brazil known as Minas Gerais. It uses the region's distinctive 6/8 meter and Afro-Brazilian rhythms. Minas Gerais is the home of singer Milton Nascimento and, melodically, Luis believes "Daybreak" sounds reminiscent of much of Nascimento's repertoire. Nascimento is just one of several Brazilian superstars Luis pays tribute to on this record. Others include Hermeto Pascoal, Caetano Veloso, and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

This is SUCH a wonderful album! This is NOT your average snoozy, smooth-jazz sleeping pill. Ze Luis uses the richness of his Brazilian heritage to create an album of emotional depth and musical inventiveness. It examines different ins and outs of jazz, MPB, folk and that undefinable X factor found in music by artists beholden to nobody's rules but their own. All those years in Caetano Veloso's band paid off handsomely for this man! This CD is actually much better than Boney James, Richard Elliot et. al. You can buy it expecting something along those lines, but beware: the creativity and feeling on display here will soon make you forget all about those guys. Petition your local jazz station ("smooth" or otherwise) to put this very deserving effort into heavy rotation immediately!

5 out of 5 stars great album.......1999-10-19

This is one of the best albuns on brazilian jazz music. With a great Tom Jobim accent, Zé Luis make us very happy with his music.

5 out of 5 stars A great Jazz Artist! Great Sound !.......1999-10-18

This CD has a number of good songs. From melodic to dancing, showing the real art of contemporaneous jazz. If you like Richard Elliot, Bonney James you will certainly like Ze luis.

I don't need one thousand words to say that this album is great!
That's a Brazilian version of what was released in USA by Malandro Records. It has a genuine and distinct sound with mostly original material and one Jobim song that was recorded on the album Tom & Elis, piano(Tom) and vocal(Elis) only, on Ze's version is almost like the same, but with a new twist, tenor(Ze Luis) sax and piano (Dom Salvador). Guests on the album Don Um Romão, Romero Lubambo, Mark Soskin, Maucha Adnet (vocals) among many others.
Check it out... You'll love it.
By the way Ze Luis was the musical director for the record release of Bebel Gilberto's "Tanto Tempo"
