About the Artist
Robert "the Pole" Goyeneche (1926-1995). Singer of tango born in Buenos Aires. Astor Piazzolla said of him: "the Pole is only and irreplaceable; a product of a human and artistic maturation. Goyeneche is real and typically citizen, that is to say, their timbre, the color of their voice, reflects ways to be and to feel of the inhabitant of a great city".

Excellent - Both Technically and Emotionally.......2006-02-08

I am new to the masterpieces of woodwind composition, and this is my first purchase of strictly woodwind works. Based on this CD,the New York Woodwind Quintet is the psychic classical music equivalent of the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ). Each note is given the care it deserves, from the first track to the last, just as the MJQ did on most of their recordings. The fact that Elliot Carter's work is represented on this recording perhaps gives the entire album a vanguard feel - even pastoral themes communicated with a gentle horn effect seem new and edgy.

It should also be said that the precision given to the recording is only surpassed by the attention given to emotional effect. The careful listener will be rewarded with a range of feelings and moods. This is a top notch CD.

Great Artists brisk through a difficult repertoire.......2001-09-27

These are superb artists playing on fine instruments and achieving fine balance and blend; and the sound is too good to be true. Some of these recordings come from the early 1960s but Boston Skyline have brought out the very best and it would be difficult to fault them even today.

The disc contains a variety of music ranging from the 17th Century to the present day, the latter represented above all by two eminent American composers, namely Samuel Barber and Elliot Carter. I'm afraid I've always held Elliot Carter in deep suspicion, purely a personal view since Carter, like so many of the avant garde, does not construct the musical linguistics as he goes along; thus the listener has no common musical linguistic base on which to comprehend the music inwardly. At best, to me, the music comes over as 'interesting'. In this work, at least he shows he can write something of a fugue in the fantasia. However, he commands a following and I'm bound to agree that the New York Woodwind Quintet make his music listenable.

Barber's Summer Music is a different matter entirely. The work is as approachable as any Barber and is pure summer. It begins with a lazy, laid-back (and horribly difficult intro for the bassoon which is exposed in the most upper reaches of its register); soon to dissolve into dance-like themes in rapid staccato, so light and airy they could be nothing other than summer. Then more drifting under rolling clouds set in a perfect blue sky. A beautiful work in which Barber shows he is as much at ease composing for a woodwind quintet as any other medium.

I was snared by the sensitivity of these artists, more so because their expressiveness comes across in these historic recordings without being forced. I've heard other, mechanically accurate recordings of the Neilsen and Barber but nothing that approaches the expressive qualities of this ensemble. They deserve never to be forgotten.

Incredible!.......2006-04-06

After Nocturna finished playing in my jeep, I couldnt help but Scream out loud with jubilation. This song left me breathless and stunned. The musicianship, vocals and musical compostion is outstanding. A ton of work and passion in this album. If you feel music's passion and emotion right down to your inner core, then you will love this cd.
I am sorry that i never found it earlier!

Rythm Is Magic is my favourite song of all times. I would like to find other albums of Marie Claire D'Ubaldo because I'm sure they will be brilliant.

Guzman Fan.......2003-09-21

This CD has many of the songs that all Guzman fans look for. However these songs are new version which Guzman re-recorded a few years back and honestly neither his voice nor the new music arrangements are nearly as good as the orginal recordings. Hopefully there are other CDs that have the TRUE original recordings of these timeless classics of Enrique Guzman

Child Prodigy.......2006-03-31

When you listen to the recording you hear such maturity in the performance. There is also a depth of sincere, pure artistry and musicality. There are many children these days that are pushed by parents into "stellar" status. They tend to burn out quickly. I see it in my line of work as a piano teacher. A child prodigy is really a very rare gift. There are many children that are extremely bright and gifted and driven by their parents, but few truly have the inner drive found in a natural prodigy. I sense that inner drive in her playing.

I can tell from listening that this performer has that beautiful gift. I am also glad to know that her teachers at Juilliard and her parents are careful to allow her to be a child! As she experiences life's ups and downs it will deepen her artistry and expression! This is a wonderful recording to have in your music library. I hope that she continues to record through the years.

Helen Huang DOMINATES the Pianio.......2001-04-18

Helen Huang is the single greatest pianist ever. I was lucky enough to hear her play with the New York Philharmonic recently and was mesmerized by her performance. Normally I fall asleep while listening to classical music, but Ms. Huang managed to keep me awake. Her second movement made my friend Sami cry, and thats quite a feat. Her maturity and grace shine through every performance and I cannot wait to see what she will do in the future.

Helen Huang is not only one of the greatest talents to ever grace a keyboard, she might be one of the most beautiful as well. Her sound is remarkable, to say nothing of her age and her technique is incredible. I highly recommend any of her recordings, and especially would urge the classical music fan to see her perform live. It is truly an experience you won't soon forget

Starkly Emotional.......2005-01-09

The first time I listened to De Barro, I "listened" as it played in the background while working at the office. Consequently, I did not really "hear" what Goyeneche was doing and so did not much appreciate the power of what I heard. Then I brought it along on a trip to give it a second chance in my car stereo and listened closely. That made all the difference in the world.
De Barro is an intimate and starkly emotional recording. Most songs are stripped down with minimal instrumentation. Here is Goyeneche at his best. These songs were recorded in several venues over several years, and most have the distinct feel of having been performed in small clubs. Some were recorded live with latter-day collaborator Litto Nebbia, a man who delights in keeping the flames of aging tango legends burning and bringing their music to a new generation. Others seem to be Goyeneche himself with just a guitar and sometimes a bandoneon as accompaniment. Incidentally, some of the guitar work is tremendous.
Unfortunately, the liner notes are not much help as they are as simple as the music. But that seems to be characteristic of CDs on the Argentine "Discos Melopea" label.
What's good here? Well, my favorites are Pedacito de Cielo, Naranjo en Flor, Como Dos Extranos, Viejo Ciego, Malevaje. Contramarca, and Berretin. The best of these are the command performances of Naranjo en Flor and Viejo Ciego. That last one is a deeply emotional song in which one can almost feel the pain of Goyeneche's awareness of his impending mortality. And the ability to project such an emotion in song contributes to his immortality.
So if you are a fan of Roberto Goyeneche but hadn't hear some of his latter-day work, pick this up and listen closely. You will be glad you did.
