Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bring back Chisel!.......2007-06-03

Cold Chisel defined aussie rock in the early to mid 80s, and have proven to be the cornerstone for most serious aussie rock acts since. This album gives you a good slice of their material, a bunch of sweaty raw ballads that bring a sense of pride to most aussie blokes under 50 years of age. Jimmy Barnes went on to have a successful solo career in Australia, but the blending of him with Moss and Walker in this band was simply magic.
This album's collection of songs holds up today as a living snapshot of aussie pub life, and no australian bar is without a few of these tunes in their discbox.
If you like glitchy, commercial rock then this band never was for you. But if you like the rawness of a sweaty live act that was not tied to one genre then this disc will end up having a fair bit of airplay for you.
Go ahead and buy it, I doubt it will disappoint

3 out of 5 stars Overrated.......2007-03-22

With all due respect to Aussies who were young when this band was hot, as an objective listener without the historical/emotional baggage I have to say that this stuff here ain't so hot. Supposed Bob Seeger joined a band which was half Huey Lewis' News and half Little River Band. You'd have something, but you wouldn't have a whole lot more than a nice, highly talented, polished up bar band. Nothing awful but nothing great.

2 out of 5 stars Australian nostalgia.......2007-01-04

I was told by my friends in Australia the last song on this album is like Free Bird is for us. I don't get it. It is just another '80's rock and roll band. Nothing memorable

5 out of 5 stars A Distinctly Australian Take On American Blues-Rock And R&B-Rock.......2006-03-12

Cold Chisel's music is an impressive take on American blues-rock and R&B-rock. The band sounds sort of like an Australian Grand Funk Railroad, and vocalist Jimmy Barnes is a Down Under version of Bob Seger. The songs often search for answers to hard-to-ask questions, and even when the band is singing about good times, there's a strong sense that rashness will lead to ruin. This undertone, which runs through all of the songs and comes to the fore on several, inspires me to look at photos of various TV and movie hotties as a deterrent to self-indulgent behavior. The core members' belief that the young Australian tourist convicted in Indonesia last spring for drug-smuggling was the victim of a grave injustice makes this CD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars You Got Nothing I Want Cold Chisel!!!.......2005-08-19

This is a "best of"album by the vastly overrated Australian band Cold Chisel. At the time of these recordings the lead singer Jimmy Barnes was drinking enough vodka to keep the Soviet Union's Alcohol Industry afloat. The tracks on this album are mostly forgettable except for "You Got Nothing I Want" which was written after the band failed to "break into" the USA market. This song reminds me very much of sour grapes indeed. After listening to this sorry excuse for a song one has to assume that International Success, Fame and Fortune meant nothing to this band. Thankfully Jimmy Barnes has now cut his hair and stopped drinking which once again proves the Old Adage that drunks, like prostitutes, buildings and Politicians all become respectable with age. For some reason Jimmy is now a "
Hero" of the Australian Working Class although I have yet to meet a Working Class Man who wears a Rolex watch!!! I give this album 5 stars because thankfully this band no longer exists .

Disc One contains various Australian artists covering the best of Cold Chisel while the limited Disc Two features the original Chisel versions of the tracks featured on Disc One! We dare you to listen to Pete Murray's reading of "Forever Now" and tell us that it isn't an incredibly poignant valentine to lost love. Tell us that Paul Kelly's version of "Khe Sanh" doesn't stop you in your tracks with it's tale of a soul-destroyed Vietnam veteran, each word chosen as carefully as a haiku poem. The list goes on, from Augie March's "Janelle" to Sarah Blasko's "Flame Trees." The songs themselves are so great, and the versions contained on this album do them proud. This is quite simply an outstanding collection that will appeal not just to fans of these acts and Cold Chisel themselves - but fans of great Australian music in general. Warner.

    4 out of 5 stars i love chisel........2003-03-29

chisel is one of the most under-appreciated bands from the late 90's. they were the new "indie rock" before the new indie rock actually became popular. it's a shame they are no longer around, because they were awesome live. they are catchy without being annoying, which is a pretty hard thing to master.

even years after buying this album, i still play it every few months if i feel like dancing alone in my room.

    4 out of 5 stars Mod/Pop/Punk at its best.......2000-07-07

A great full-length debut release from this now-defunct trio from Washington, DC, Chisel builds up a great wall of guitar noise then crafts it into catchy mod-pop with punkish overtones. They've been compared dozens of times to Superchunk, and they should take it as a sincere compliment. Turn up the volume when listening, and I guarantee you'll be tapping your feet.

5 out of 5 stars DC Music At Its best.......2000-09-29

If you happen to stumble upon this recording or this review, buy this CD. As a teenager growing up on music by the Jam, Clash, Buzzcocks, or even Scream, Replacements and Fugazi, I was spoiled by quality musicians playing intelligent music. I am happy to say that this now defunct band was as good as any of those. Set You Free is lush, diverse and fulfilling, and it is one of only a handful of records that doesn't contain a disappointing track.

    4 out of 5 stars Super!.......1999-10-17

This is a great record. I've spent many an hour listening to this LP: I put on side A, love it, flip it over, it goes on and on and I have to flip it again. Back and forth. I bought it when it came out, and I must have listened to it twenty times the first week I had it. I put it on again just today, and I must say, it still rocks. On this record you will find, much to your delight, tightly moving three-piece rock instrument arrangments; great vocals, both solo and harmonized; some mid or late twenties guys and their families playing Beatlesesque songs to the tone of "Paperback Writer"; wherein the songs are exceptionally well composed in many respects. I say, these are talented fellows with an intelligent and pleasing sense of western harmony well applied to the modern rock sound stage. The album has great karma; it will no doubt improve your life. I don't know what the star ratings mean. I want to give it an "A". I recommend it to my friends.

5 out of 5 stars the other reviews are not for this album??!.......1999-10-13

this is a great record. i don't know what the first two are reviewing, but it is obviously the antithesis of chisel.

5 out of 5 stars This disc is at my side at all times........1998-05-16

Though the disc is sub-titled "The Home Recordings," there isn't a lack of quality in production. From the beautiful opening ballad "Latter Days" OTR's Karen Bergquist weaves a golden tapestry of honey-like songs that will leave you dripping with emotion undoubtedly tug at your heartstrings. The disc focuses its attention on human brokenness and our need for "everything" as alluded to in the second track "All I Need Is Everything." Though all the tracks are noteworthy "Latter Days," "All I Need Is Everything" and "The Seahorse" shine out the brightest. Songwriter Linford Detweiler, the band's founding member, is as literate and keen as they come. In "Latter Days" Detweiler penned: "What a beautiful piece of heartache this has all turned out to be. Lord knows we've learned the hard way all about healthy apathy. And I use these words pretty loosely. There's so much more to life than words." Detweiller hit the nail on the head, there's much more to life than words--there's music. OTR's latest release won't leave you disappointed. I'm looking forward to a new release in what I hope to be the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Crafting music Over the Rhine-style.......1998-05-05

Here is yet another remarkable recording by one of the most intelligent bands making music today. The spare lyrics quietly fit the music; neither is sacrificed to the other. Lead singer Karin Bergquist's voice is luminous, allowing the poetry of such songs as "Latter Days," "All I Need Is Everything," and "Poughkeepsie" to root in the listener's ear like an ohrworm, finding a snug home there. Those who appreciate music which is not afraid to doubt, to investigate what it is that makes us human, will clasp this CD tightly once they've heard it.

Quiet music should be played loud.

5 out of 5 stars Finest in the land.......2006-02-12

Cold Chisel began as Australia's biggest 'pub band' and swiftly became our most impressive stadium rock outfit. The years since they admirably called it quits in 1983 have only solidified their likely status as Australia's finest band ever. As with all great acts, the reason for this, despite appearances, does not rest with one individual. Most visible is the iconic, charismatic frontman, JIMMY BARNES who also carved out a lucrative, but artistically less impressive solo career. In the days of Chisel, he could belt out R&B flavoured rock vocals with a shrewd and powerful authenticity. He was the perfect ambassador for the songwriting of DON WALKER who assumed the lion's share of composing for the group. As the band's true enigma, he has redefined pop songcraft into a kind of amalgam of Tom Waits and The Rolling Stones - blues infused tales of losers, sharks, hookers, tv-evangelists, ex-crims or just regular punters cruising the streets on a Saturday night. WALKER could also bash out hit after hit if he wanted to, attested to on just this album with "Cheap Wine", "Ita", "Standing on the Outside", "Choir Girl", "Star Hotel" and so on. Chisel also boasted a second vocalist and guitar virtuoso who could've easily fronted any other group in IAN MOSS, the boy from Alice Springs who could work his way around his guitar better than anyone else in the country. His vocals are on display here with "Never Before", "Best Kept Lies" and "My Baby", yet another hit, this time penned by the inventive and reclusive bass player PHIL SMALL. Apparently, the success of this song lead to Small becoming so self conscious, he never submitted a finished song to the group again. Finally, the band also boasts one of Australia's most accomplished drummers and also, yet again, another great songwriter in STEVEN PRESTWICH. Steve wrote "Best Kept Lies" for this album but really hit his straps on the next LP "Circus Animals" where he penned two magnificent tunes in "When the War is Over" and "Forever Now".
This album, for sheer pop fluidity, is probably Chisel's best and it would rank as one of Australia's ten best ever albums.
If you are new to the band and interested, this is not a bad place to start although you will also certainly enjoy "Chisel" - the greatest hits collection. "East" is a masterpiece, although the other albums aren't far behind and there are plenty more hits than you will find on this CD. Not the least of these of course is the Walker composition Khe Sahn which is laying claims to being our new virtual national anthem.
Chisel are so well known they're like oxygen in Australia. If you are from the US and have never been exposed to their infectious and intelligent blend of rock, blues, reggae and classic Australian lyricism, you're in for a serious treat.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Not The Solution When You Spend Your Dole Money On The Pokies!!!.......2005-12-11

This is yet another album released by the highly overrated Australian band Cold Chisel. In the track "Standing On The Outside" it is suggested to the listener that if they are short of cash then the solution is to rob a TAB (Aussie Betting Outlet) which glorifies a life of crime. It seems that Mr. Don Walker likes writing songs about so called "Beautiful Losers" but I feel there is nothing "Glorious" about drinking Cheap Wine on a beach all day with regrets about what you did yesterday .Perhaps the success that this band enjoyed was partly due to the fact that the listeners could all relate to the losers depicted in Mr. Wanker's songs. Misery just LOVES company!

    5 out of 5 stars Australian classic.......2004-12-28

The release of East, their third album, is when Cold Chisel moved from being Australia's best pub band and became a legend. The largely autobiographical or topical nature of many of the songs, especially Standing on the Outside, Star Hotel, Rising Sun, the tongue-in-cheek Ita (on the Australian release), and the sheer depth and variety of material on this album placed Chisel in the top rank in Australia.

That they never received recognition overseas, especially in the USA, was an indictment of the recording industry - a situation which lent itself to the writing of 'You've got nothing I Want' for the Circus Animals album. Still, they were all ours, and they were magnificent.

I played some of East while writing this review and was again reminded why I loved this band then, and why they still excite me now.

I can still remember rushing out to by the LP of East on the day of release, which included a bonus single (included on the remastered CD) for the first few thousand copies. Cold Chisel engendered such devotion. On East you can hear why.

There is something terribly wrong if East is not in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars A great album - now it sounds great, too!.......2000-10-28

Okay, we have seen a lot of "enhanced" CDs in the 90s. Nearly all the classic rock albums have been remastered to get another buck from the fans and sometimes it was even worth it. And this is definetly the case with Cold Chisel's East! The quality of the recording definetly increased and three bonus tracks (outtakes from the recording sessions) have been added to the CD. There is even multimedia material for your computer! Cold Chisel is one of Australia's rock classics and "East" is one of their best recordings. This "enhanced" version is worth every cent!

    5 out of 5 stars A rare, singular feat.......2004-08-18

This, for me, is probably the apex of 90s mod songwriting...better than the Strike, the Odd Numbers, and nearly as good as some of Leo's later work ('00-'02), albeit from ('93-'95). Fans of the Jam, the Who and Joe Jackson will be thrilled that a band like Chisel gets not only the style but the intention and the meaning. Imagine Belle & Sebastien in different clothes, but just as stylish.

4 out of 5 stars Fans should enjoy this band's transitional first recording.......1998-09-17

First full-length release by this disbanded Washington, D.C. trio is actualy "Nothing New," namely, because this CD contains some of the band's earlier recorded work from 1993 and 1994, when they were moving from South Bend, Indiana to Washington.

During Chisel's early days in 1991, they followed more of the strict Washington "emo" sound and were also compared to Superchunk for their pop energy. NOTHING NEW shows their transformation from emo-popsters to mod-popsters that marked their second release, 8 A.M. ALL DAY and paved the way for their final record, SET YOU FREE.

All in all, "Innocents Abroad" remains one of the band's most catchy songs.

4 out of 5 stars Worthy effort from these Detroit Natives.......2007-03-15

I first got a listen to Frank N Dank on the immortal J-Dilla's classic Welcome 2 Detroit. When I heard they were dropping their own album, I had to go cop it. The beats definitely add to the music instead of subtracting from it, FND is adept and in control of their music, which shows with the rythm and pin point precise hooks on most of their songs. You can tell FND slept in the lab to perfect their craft. 3 tracks from Dilla are fantasic, as well as nice production from Kardinal Offishall, Saukrates, Ohno, and others. Just like other Detroit-made albums, you can sit back, burn one, and vibe. I would probably give this disc 3.5 stars instead of four, and that's just because there could've been more Dilla production.

5 out of 5 stars The best Australian band...captured live!.......2001-10-18

Swingshift packs a wallop! From Ian Moss's power chords opening "Conversations" to the last strains of Jimmy Barnes screaming "Goodbye", this album showcases Cold Chisel in their prime as they ascended to the top of Australia's thriving music scene. I've burned through 2 copies of Swingshift over the years, and am ready for my third. The concerts capture here represent the true essence of a Chisel concert - great playing, crowd energy, and a terrific setlist. The mix povides the edginess that a powerful live concert ought to have without messing up the quality. All the early favorites are here with a killer Bob Dylan cover thrown in for good measure. The guest musicians in attendance (David Blight and Billy Rodgers) and the band are all in top form. Barnesy's voice and stage presence are incredible,Mossy's guitar is inspiring, and Don Walker's subtle touches are a perfect compliment to Moss's punchy guitar work. Beneath it all rides a power-packed rythmn section that goes about its buiness in journeyman style. This is a band that knows what it's about and is obviously having a good time. Favorite tracks include 'Khe Sahn', 'One Long Day', 'Long As I Can See the Light', and 'Goodbye'. Wish I'd been there. Swingshift's the next best thing.

5 out of 5 stars Finest Recording Ever.......2000-07-05

Swingshift is, without question, the finest recording of all time. Cold Chisel have recorded on a night at their best during the Youth In Asia Tour and the results are spectacular. The classics are all there- "Cheap Wine", "Choir Girl", "My Baby"- with Barnes and Mossy hammering out the vocals while the band show us just how tight they can be. The band also show us how the songs from "Cold Chisel" and "Breakfast At Sweethearts" are supposed to be heard, and the "Khe Sanh" on this recording is the best "Khe Sanh" ever. Songs like "Conversations" and "Shipping Steel" go from being average to incredibly moving on this album, the band going for all they're worth. The covers on the album are also worth noting, "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is a fabulous interpretation of the Dylan Classic, and the brief but magic Cameo vocals from Don in this one send tingles down the spine. The final track, "Goodbye", comes to a fantastic climax to end the album, but it is never enough, the listener always wants more after being blown away by Swingshift!

    5 out of 5 stars Under-appreciated beauty.......2005-08-24

This album is a gem...a must for any rock collection. in the early 80s when the American "hair bands" (Journey/REO etc) had degenerated into shlock like "Lovin', touchin' squeezin'" and "High Infidelity" these Aussies were rockin'. This album is a fine mix of balls-out rockers to ballads and every song is great. This is Cold Chisel at their best. The original version of "Bow River" found on this album, which appears in many forms on all live Chisel albums, is the best of all....possibly one of the coolest, catchiest rock songs ever written....a virtual rollercoaster of fantastic vocals and crunchy guitar hooks...great stuff. The bonus tracks are neat but the original more than stands up by itself. Cold Chisel was an honest, straight-forward band with no need for hype or pretense. It is too bad they had such a short life together....more records like this would be very welcome indeed. I could write a lot about this relatively unknown album (at least unknown in the US) but suffice it to say it always satisfies. Buy it and enjoy it, I know you will.

5 out of 5 stars Their Finest Moment.......2004-12-08

This is not as intantly gratifying as "East", as it does not, in my opinion contain as much radio friendly, poppy stuff as that album.

This is a much better album because of the songs that did not make radio play. All the Don Walker stuff such as "Wild Colonial Boy", "Houndog", "Taipan" and "Letter To Alan" make this a great album. Songs that are personal and direct, they are gems that shine in a mine of great material.

The pop is not left completely behind with "Forever Now" and the classic "When The War Is Over" as well as the biting Barnes classic "You Got Nothing I Want" about Elektra records.

Recorded in 1981, but still sounding as fresh now as it ever did it is an Australian classic and these blokes should have been huge overseas if given the right promotion. Unfortunately, they weren't big and didn't get the right promotion from Elektra.
Such a pity as they were truly great

    5 out of 5 stars Definitive Oz-Rock.......2001-11-28

You want Oz-Rock at it's finest? Just listen to Bow River. Hear Ian Moss' amazing voice (and he ain't even the lead singer). Hear the band kick in for the second verse. Hear it lift when Jim Barnes joins in for the chorus. Experience the intensity in Mossy's crunching guitar solo and then, when you think it can't scale any new peaks, feel your hairs stand on end when Barnes comes in for the final screaming verse. It all finishes with Moss bringing it back down to earth. I'm always breathless by the end of this song. As for the rest of the disc, all I'll say is there's not a dud song on there, esp Wild Colonial Boy, No Good For You, Hound Dog (love the bridge), and the classic, classic pop of Forever Now. Stunning music.

    5 out of 5 stars American's Don't Know What They're Missing.......2001-10-31

I know of only a few people who have even heard of Cold Chisel, but I'd venture to guess that virtually any American fan of classic rock ranging from Steely Dan to Bob Seger to Blue Oyster Cult to Bruce Springsteen would love this Australian band if they ever got a chance to hear them. "Circus Animals", their 4th studio album, shows them moving in a slightly pop direction with great songs like "Forever Now", and "No Good For You". Of course they still rock like crazy on "Bow River", "Wild Colonial Boy", etc. Cold Chisel have got the musical chops, the great guitar leads from Ian Moss, the great singing of Jimmy Barnes, and most important, the great songs of Don Walker, who writes the kind of lyrics that would fit right in on an album by Dylan or Jackson Browne and are so seldom heard on music that rocks this hard. The complete package!

5 out of 5 stars COLD CHISEL AT THE PREMIUM BEST!.......2000-07-02

BY FAR THE BEST ALBUM BY THE BAND.AFTER THEIR HUGE ALBUM EAST WHICH LAUNCHED THEM INTERNATIONALLY AND PROVED TO THE WORLD HOW GOOD THEY WERE AT PRODUCING PUMPING ROCK AND ROLL.CIRCUS ANIMALS WAS A MORE REFINED ALBUM AND CONTAINED SONGS WHICH WERE NOT ONLY CLOSE TO THE BANDS HEART BUT ALSO SONGS WHICH REMAIN POPULAR ALMOST 20 YEARS AFTER ITS RELEASE.
