Talk about high concept: this project features the house band of noted New York reggae label Easy Star covering Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in the same sequence and in recognizable but reggae fashion. Here, the All Stars turn Floyd's strangely surreal world even stranger and more surreal, adorning the English band's dark psychedelic music with slow reggae beats and head-spinning dub-style production that is both inspired and effective. "Money" opens with the sound of bong hits and coughing instead of the cash register, then grooves to a reggae beat as guitar and organ churn out the classic riff--there's even the signatory sax break in the middle. The group hits it just right on "Great Gig In The Sky," retaining the soaring gospel voice, while the remake of the chiming bells on "Time" reveals a bit of irreverent humor. Tearing away at the alienation of the original, this infusion of new personality makes it all work, elevating the album's concept from the half-baked to visionary. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:
Pink Floyd + Reggae = Very cool & clever music!.......2007-06-03
Like some weird genre accident gone right..........2007-05-30
Add to that genre hopping, a weird and treacherous enterprise. Too often does it simply fail, or worse, the effort gets consigned to parody without getting the attention it deserves. Laziness and a lack of presence notwithstanding, this is one recording that requires a bit of attention before rendering judgement.
I first read about this project when I lived overseas... and at the time, I'll be frank, it sounded half-baked. But for some reason, it was the first cd I bought when I got home in 2003.
Truth be told, I've never been more satisfied with a cover than I have with this one. It is truly remarkable that the all-stars, or anyone for that matter, could pull this off. There is reinvention on a grand scale, but also tremendous attention (and respect) paid to the original recording. To render this album in such terms reveals not just a few things between Floyd and reggae in general.
who wudda thought? but brilliant.......2007-05-22
in fact, dark side's ambient, luscious aural landscape fits perfectly with reggae's emphasis on texture and multi-layered production. the all stars musicianship is impeccable and they add nuance and new facets to the floyd classic. try it!
Very, very good, mon........2007-04-26
So imagine my surprise when I discovered this CD. As a traditionalist and generally unforgiving when you try and alter defined classics, I was VERY skeptical. But, I love DSOTM, and I love reggae, so I thought I'd give it a try.
Wow.
It works...it really does. Absolutely true to the original while changing the feel at the same time. They have taken great care to replicate certain critical aspects of the original: Nyambingi-style drumming replaces the opening heartbeat pattern in Speak To Me perfectly, the oscillating keyboard sound during On The Run, the woman's vocal lines during Great Gig In The Sky, and the keyboard feel during Any Colour You Like.
To me, Any Colour is the standout on the entire recording. It just seems so natural with a reggae beat behind it, and the trombones that cover Gilmour's guitar parts are dead on.
The only thing I found troubling was On The Run. It slips into this heavy raggamuffin hip-hop kind of techno beat. I've since grown accustomed to it, and it is okay, but it is quite different from the rest of the recording.
This is a VERY good tribute to the original. If you like reggae and you dig the Floyd, you will appreciate this heartfelt and sincere effort at a tribute of one of the greatest recordings of all time. Well done, gents.

A ricochet of crossed-horn riffs open Antibalas's third album, Security, and what's immediately marvelous is the production, the lack of polish and purity in the tones. There's a ratty edge on Jordan McLean and Eric Biondo's trumpets, and Aaron Johnson's trombone only fattens the frays. The album's produced, engineered, and mixed by John McEntire, who made his name playing cold-blooded percussion in Tortoise, and he brings this Brooklyn-born twelvetet to the Lagos of Fela Kuti by lessening the sonic distinction between Chris Vatalaro's bass drum, his snare, and his tom-toms. The rhythm's a viscous fluid, stirred by vintage, lo-fi keyboards, slinking guitar riffs, and Stuart Bogie's tenor sax, which bears more than a hint of the roughened "Texas tenor" sound of 60s' hard bop. Antibalas is decidedly like Fela in that theirs is agit-Afro Beat, musically stirring in its core groupthink elements (rather than in flashes of solo genius). Tune into "Filibuster X," an excoriating call-and-response send-up of Republican presidential politics, and you'll hear the echoes of Fela's telltale vocal constructions, the clatter of politicized funk at its best. --Andrew BartlettAlbum Description
With Security, their ANTI- debut, Brooklyn's Antibalas are ready to connect with a mass audience hungry for loosebooty grooves, intelligent sounds, and committed lyrics - the same audience that made instant classics of genre-breakers like Talking Heads' Remain In Light. Bringing John McEntire of Tortoise into the studio - this is the band's first release with an outside producer - has upped the harmonic density in Antibalas' sound, creating a rich tapestry of harmelodic color that owes as much to jazz masters like Mingus and Coltrane and maverick bands like Can as it does to Fela Kuti. Antibalas have broadened their appeal to the point where they can collaborate with TV On the Radio one day, groove a sweaty Brooklyn club the next, and then turn around and rock massive crowds at festivals like Coachella and Bonaroo. Building from the revolutionary blueprint of afrobeat, the dozen-strong members of Brooklyn's Antibalas weave latin, jazz, funk and horn-laden soul into a blend that is both polyrhythmic and political, independent and infectious.Customer Reviews:

Owing as much to James Brown and Tito Puente as to Fela Kuti, Antibalas, the multiracial 14-piece Brooklyn collective named after the Spanish word for "bulletproof," are far from straight Afro Beat revivalists. Instead, Liberation Afro Beat, Vol. 1 lays New York's rich musical heritage of jazz, funk, and Latin groove over Afro Beat's polyrhythms to spectacular effect, resulting in a raw selection of driving ghetto funk. Despite tracks being mostly instrumental and nearly 10 minutes long, the relentless onslaught of rasping horns, African chants, strutting bass, and frantic percussion mean there's nothing dull about these eight phenomenal tunes. The collection's explosive Afro/Latin/American collision may earmark it as a party album, but there is a deeper motivation to their music. Hear the cries of war in the tenor sax breaks of "Dirt & Blood" and "World War IV"'s denouncement of American foreign policy; Antibalas's unreserved '70s grooves come with unreserved passion and politics. With all the ingredients of the golden age of funk, Liberation Afro Beat, Vol. 1 is a modern classic that matches (beat for socially aware beat) the best the era had to offer. --Dan GennoeCustomer Reviews:

As a hard-hitting Afro-beat orchestra that embellishes vintage Fela-style grooves with touches of gritty funk and fiery salsa, Antibalas quickly won over a sizable local audience in New York City with its sweaty live shows and relentlessly danceable rhythms. But while the band's past two efforts sounded fresh amidst a landscape of retro-rock cool, the discs never measured up to the band's galvanizing live show: Liberation Afrobeat Vol. 1 was a piecemeal effort of live and studio material; Talkatif was woefully short. Now on Who Is This America, the band constructs a great-sounding 70-minute studio effort where the seven songs are skillfully woven together, not because they all sound like one long Afro-beat song, but because there is imaginative arrangements and tasty musicianship. Here multiple percussion players are the launch pad and the funky horn charts ignite liftoff whether it's the tightly wound "Indictment" or the slowly building "Sister." Undoubtedly the band's finest work to date. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:

Antibalas, has become more entrenched in its political ideology. Unabashedly anti establishment, the album is provactively inducive. Despite the instrumental monotony throughout its albums, Antibalas delivers this time. From the graphics of the CD cover to its lyrics, it indeed questioning of our system. Political Economy, Globalization, Racism, philosophy, history; it is all here. Cant wait to see the Antibalas again in LA.

Not the original LP program... where's Chico?.......2001-11-26
Nothing against Dex, McCoy, and the Heath Brothers, but the absence of the Hamilton and Horn cuts in particular are a real loss to the collection. Chico's arrangement of "Winter Wonderland" perfectly captures that hushed, peaceful feeling you get when walking along a snowy hillside on a cold, clear night. It's beautiful, and I can hardly imagine going through the season without hearing it. Why is it missing here?? The track time on this CD is just short of 62 minutes; Columbia should have had room at least to keep Hamilton and Horn. And if it meant trimming "Blue Xmas" or Wynton (he has his own Christmas album, anyway) to make room for "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree"--so be it!
Anyway, what's here is still pretty nice. If you got this, JINGLE BELL JAM on Rhino, and Ellington's THREE SUITES (featuring his arrangement of "The Nutcracker Suite"), you'd have an excellent selection of Holiday Jazz. I hope that Columbia will reissue an expanded version of this album, with Chico Hamilton, soon. Meanwhile, look through cassette racks and used LP bins, and the original set might turn up.

Album Description
Compiled by UK DJ Patrick Forge, The Brazilian Funk Experience hooks into Patricks' personal love affair with the funky 70s Brazilian sound, digging deeper than deep into the respected EMI Odeon Label. Here he presents 20 solid gold Brazilian nuggets, most as rare as hen's teeth and on CD for the first time. Strangely every melody and jazz break sounds sooo familiar..might just be you've heard it on a radio show or at a club round London town.might just be Partick or one of his followers that was spinning tunes behind the decks at the time. So people, get on your Rio shoes and enjoy the grooves.Album Details
The Funk Explosion of the Late 1960's was a Blast Felt Way Beyond USA Shores. Brazilian Musicians of the Era Followed the American Scene with Vigilance and Took Great Inspiration from the Waves of Funk Bands that Emerged in the Wake of James Brown's Changing Grooves and George Clinton's Psychedelic Experiments. These Tracks were Laid Down in Brazilian Studios Between 1968 and 1989. They Are Drawn from Artists who Recorded for the EMI/ODEON Records Label.Customer Reviews:

If you're a luxuria music listener, this is is right up your alley. I've never come along a compilation so solid.
Sweet & smooth sounds from Brazil, expertly compiled.......2006-08-10
UK DJ Patrick Forge really outdid himself on this one. This record is a suave mix of rare Brazilian gems from 1968-1980. Most of the tracks are total keepers, ranging from smooth samba grooves to straight up sleazy funk. There are even a few jazzy numbers in the mix, but with a definate Brazilian edge.
Standout tracks include Marcos Valle's "Garra" (you'll be humming that melody to yourself for days, guaranteed), Elza Soares' "Chove Chuva" (a great jazzy groove over the classic bossa nova beat) and my personal favorite, Doris Monteiro's "Maita," which I played for 3 weeks straight without getting tired of it.
This record is perfect for lounging on a summer day, but it's even better for an intimate house party with lots of dancing and smiling. Lovers of jazz, funk, soul and world beats should do themselves a favour and expand their minds, Brazilian style.

High Fidelity indeed..........2002-01-13
Keeping up the reputation of its predecessor, this CD puts you somewhere on the Caribbean Islands and leaves you to chill out. Being almost impossible to be otherwise when you have Richard Dorfmeister for one of the supervisors of the compilation, this CD basically features only great tracks.
If you like anything from Kruder + Dorfmeister, Tosca, Thievery Corporation, Beanfield, Uptight Sound System or Dual Tone (Paul Hunter), you're bound to like this one to. I personally like the first track best because the ocean, sand, setting sun, seabreeze, seagulls, fresh grilled fish and some good wine afterwards with a decent smoke just pour out of it.
It just gets you in a good mood, that's it!
Caribbean in binary!!!
