5 out of 5 stars Great Brazilian Music.......2007-05-20

This CD provides you with some great tunes; danceable, easy to the ears, romantic and very sensual. The songs take me away and place me in the heart of Brazil; the land of high soaring spirits. Would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-05-14

This is probably my favorite album of all time. I purchased it about 8 years ago and listen to it regularly. Can't understand a single lyric from it (a few excepted) but it remains one of the best I own. It is soulful, enchanting, exciting, and mysterious all at once.

If you are in the mood for something different that will grow on you, try this one. You won't regret it. I promise.

For something similar and equally intoxicating, try Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave" or "The Composer of Desafinado, Plays". Both fantastic choices.

5 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova.......2007-03-29

I enjoy Bossa Nova, beautiful music I have enjoyed all the cd's, I have purchased.

5 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova Brasil.......2006-10-29

I play this CD frequently. Love the choices of artists and songs. Shows off the legacy of some of the artists as well. Would recommend it to the many fans of Bossa Nova and Brazilian music in general.

4 out of 5 stars Good Bossa Nova and MPB.......2004-04-13

I picked this up several years ago, and what a great disc this is. It's got some old classics on it and some pretty rare tracks too. At the time I picked it up, this was actually a series. There is another cd titled: "Samba Brasil" that has a similar cover, but is white and green.

The artists on this are fantastic. From Gal Costa do Vinicius De Moraes, you're taken on a real trip through some of the classics in Brazilian music. Perhaps most interesting and stellar of which is the Elis Regina only vocal of Waters of March. It has such an innocent sound! Carlos Lyra's "Influencia Do Jazz" will take you to a beach in the late 60's, and Baden Powell's Consolacao has that rich acoustic sound I've grown up with and love. And check out Joao Gilberto's song here along with Gal Costa's tracks... She's a VERY underrated singer IMO. But this CD isn't without fault. The sound quality can be suspect on some tracks, and a song or two weren't what I would have selected from the musicians here. (You can find "Aguas De Beber" and "Girl from Ipanema" on virtually every compilation.

Still I would have to recommend this. It's not that expensive, and out of most of the Bossa Nova/MPB samplers, this is one of the better ones IMO. For the make of Samba De Bencao, Elis Regina, Baden Powell, Tamba Trio (who did the wildly successful take of "Mas Que Nada" that featured in the 1998 World Cup commercial with Brazilian footballers in an airport) and the others... good tunes. Also check out Nova Bossa Nova - a companion piece to "Red Hot & Rio". There is some overlap, but the other version of Baden Powell's cut on that comp is better than this one IMO. Maybe also check out Bossa Nova Gold, a two disc set of MPB and Bossa Nova.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to Be Mesmerized .......2006-09-23

I was given this album by a friend. I'm not a connoisseur of international music, but I must say I was instantly captivated by this musical compilation. The songs have a catchy, relaxing quality to them.

5 out of 5 stars still love it after 15+ years.......2006-03-29

I bought the original about 15 years ago in cassette tape form
(yeah, I am getting older:). Even though I agree that Byrnes should have updated it with younger and more current artists, these classic songs still move me.

5 out of 5 stars This disc introduced me to Brazil.......2006-03-16

What a great CD. I have all of Byrnes Brazilian discs and wish he would issue more. He really captured what makes Brazilian music great with his first three discs in this series. Still, this one is really special. The fourth and fifth disc in this series are dedicated to the artist Tom Ze who is brilliant in his own weird way. This first disc makes you just want to dance all over your living room. I wish Byrne would release more. Of course I now have a lot of the cds by the original artists, but this is the one that hooked me. Buy and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Not a New CD.......2005-03-29

Why continue to recycle a CD that is now roughly sixteen years out of date? Yes, it is a great compilation, or, at least, it was in 1989, but times have changed. Maybe somebody should talk Byrne into updating this CD once again, as he did in 1999, with a new compilation or two or six. There are about a score of styles and literally dozens of artists in Brazil who deserve recognition for the music that they are making now. And it is somehow odd that while there is not exactly a shortage of Brazilian compilations out there, most of those efforts have a regretable tendency to recycle yesterday's headliners. How about a fresh compilation that includes such diverse artists as Djavan, Cibelle, Autoramas, Silvia Torres, Monica Salmaso, Carlinhos Brown, Vinicius Cantuaria, Helena, Trio Da Paz, Charlie Brown Jr, Rita Ribeiro, Fernanda Porto, Seu Jorge, and about, oh, fifty others. All are interesting artists making incredible music, and all are making that great music in the 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars one of my desert island CDs.......2004-10-12

I've owned this CD for over ten years and it remains one of my favorites. The Brazilian music featured here manages to be both instantly accessable and yet at the same time exotic and new, from the stripped-down funkiness of "Ponta de Lança Africano" to the majestic "Equatorial" to the melancholy harmonies on "Fio Maravilha." I suppose the reason for this is the fact that these artists grew up immersed in their rich musical traditions, but at the same time they were exposed to the music of the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, James Brown, etc. I don't like most of what falls under the "world music" umbrella, but this collection really hits the spot for me.

Also worth mentioning are the excellent liner notes and bilingual lyrics. Honestly, my only complaint is that this CD inspired me to go out and look for more Brazilian music but I've been unable to find anything else that I loved as much as this.

Compiled by former Talking Head David Byrne and released in 1989, with liner notes and translations by Arto Lindsay, Beleza Tropical documents a New York hipster's first infatuation with the rich, deep, and varied spectrum of Brazilian popular music from the rebellious '70s. There are better Brazilian anthologies, but none so clearly assembled in order to counter the received opinion of Brazilian music as lightweight bachelor-pad fluff (although Milton Nascimento, with his beautiful high tenor, sometimes comes close). Caetano Veloso (whose magnificent "Terra" is itself worth the price of admission) and Gilberto Gil are remarkable lyricists whose music is influenced as much by the Afro-Brazilian rhythms of northern Brazil as by the Beatles. Jorge Ben contributes a pair of highfalutin yet funky soccer songs, Chico Buarque is at his most uncompromisingly poetic, and Nazare Pereira taps deep into Brazilian folklore. --Richard Gehr

5 out of 5 stars Perfect For Non-Experts.......2007-04-10

Back in the '80s when this came out, US pop stars like David Byrne and Paul Simon won great praise for discovering "world music." Of course, this was the height of arrogance because this music has been around forever, just not known to many in the US. This Brazilian sampler is certainly melodious, though some think it doesn't contain the best work of the great Brazilian artists featured. So what? If you don't know this music very well, this CD makes a fabulous introduction. The lilting rhythms and irresistible melodies will grab any ears on first hearing and not let go.

3 out of 5 stars Great Artists...Just Not Their Best Songs........2003-11-04

I was definitely a little dissapointed in this CD. I originally bought it because it had a lot of my favorite artists on it (Jorge Ben, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, etc.), however this CD does not showcase these artists best songs or work.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD.......2000-01-19

I've had this CD for nearly 10 years now, and I still love it. It is a great introduction to Brazilian music. Like many compilations featuring various artists, there is a wide variety of styles; some songs I don't like as much, while others are just incredible, and that's why it ranks as a five-star CD. I would rank the best songs on "Brazil Classics I: Beleza Tropical" with songs by the Beatles or Simon & Garfunkel. It's hard to describe-- the music is a little bit familiar and accessable to my American ears, and at the same time very different than anything I had heard before. I gave a copy as gift to a friend, and he loved it. Then he promptly went out and bought two copies to give as gifts to other friends. It's definitely the kind of CD you want to share with your friends and spread the word about. The liner notes are quite good, too.

4 out of 5 stars Almost worth replacing.......2000-01-08

I owned this CD until recently. Basically, I wore it out by playing certain cuts over, and over, and over ... mostly at grad school parties where friends would always ask "What's this! " About 70% of this material is as good as any music I've ever heard, Beatles included. It's the other 30% that grates. Such are the slings & arrows of any very good, challenging compilation by more than one artist. Continuity can be a problem. Worth owning once as a fine (and historically important) intro to Brasilian music, but not worth replacing. There's better musica brasileira to be had - once you know what you like. Therein lies the value of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Why ONLY 5 stars?.......1999-12-01

This is one of the best compilations (not only of brazilian music, but of any kind) i've ever had the luck to listen to, even though i think it's not the best David Byrne's compilation (i think Samba is). It's great from beginning to end, it doesn't have a flaw, it offers you some of the best creations of some of the best MPB musicians of any time. This is a must (IMHO) not only for all the MPB fans (including myself) but all music fans out there, you can't go wrong with this. Thanx David Byrne for such compilation, and even more thanx to the musicians that in any way were part of the process of creating such marvelous music. thanx again!

Leave it to the savvy impresarios of Rough Guides (home of the handy travel and discographical reference tomes) to bring armchair backpackers one of the finer single-disc anthologies of Brazilian music on the market. Rather than foolishly trying to encapsulate the stylistic breadth of Latin America's mega-populous country, this 19-song compilation largely covers the lighter, popular regional forms, like the samba and bossa nova of Rio de Janeiro, which, on occasion, surprisingly transcend their inherent cheesiness. Lively accordions and polyrhythmic drums represent the more hip forro and carnival grooves. But the real treats come in fresh Afro-European-American hybrids like Bahian rap ("Charles Anjo 45"), Latin-jazz funk ("Negada da Lapa"), Maranhaon bottleneck blues ("Isso"), an old choro on cavaquinho (mini guitar) and harpsichord ("Carinhoso"), and Marlui Miranda and Uakti's dazzling arrangement of "Tchori Tchori," a traditional fishing tune from the indigenous Jaboti peoples. --Sam Prestianni

4 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, but quite fun.......2000-11-28

After seeing a Brazilian percussion band in concert, I became enamored by the Brazilian musical style. I couldn't find a recording by the band (turns out they haven't released anything), so I thought I'd pick up this recording to see what I thought of Brazilian music. It's quite fun. It has a wide range of styles, from what I'd have to call Brazilian rap, to zydeco, to Paul Simon-esque tunes. It's very rich from the percussion side of things. Track 6 bugs me, as the singers voices sound artificially high-pitched. Virtually every other tune is pleasant to listen to. I give it four stars, because I can listen to it over and over in a day, and come back to it the next day and still enjoy it.

    4 out of 5 stars A Great, Diverse Collection.......2003-11-04

This CD has a good mix of samba songs. It was well thought out and there are many classic songs on here by great artists. Be sure to check out Pagode queen, Beth Carvalho's "Rose Vermelha", Gal Costa's "Aquarela do Brasil", "Conversa de Botequim" by Doris Monteiro, and Leila Pinheiro's "Um Samba".

3 out of 5 stars Good, but I have heard better.......2003-06-23

This is a very good CD that gives you good introduction to samba's sounds. The songs are well constructed and a lot of them are memorable. To my taste, however, I prefer more agressive samba that I have heard on other samples that use a faster rhythm.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant but uninspiring.......2001-02-21

I took a chance on this one and frankly my expectations have been disappointed. I was hoping for the big churning sound of samba bands full on, with the sort of drive and exuberance that Carlinhos Brown brings to the party. Whereas most of the stuff on this album is "mellow" and meandering, yet another take on bossa nova and MPB.

Maria Bethania has a wonderful husky voice and there are a couple of other intriguing tracks that I'll fillet out, but in my collection this CD gets filed under "Forgettable".

Anybody looking for a taster of Brazilian music, I would suggest checking out Sergio Mendes's "Brasiliero".

5 out of 5 stars the music sweeps you over like a tropical ocean breeze.......1999-11-02

This is arguably the best Samba compilation money can buy. There are a couple of duds, but the rest of the collection more than makes up for the price. Actually, this is the CD that got me interested in Samba. I've come across many other Samba collections that were disapointing and a waste of money. However, this CD will have you humming the tunes for weeks. Yes, they are that infectious! Just when you think you've overdosed on this, come back to it again after a couple of weeks and its like falling in love all over again. This music is litererally theraputic and will put a smile on your face and make you completely relaxed after a day of stress. One important note; if you find yourself listening to the two Beth Carvalho tracks over and over again, it's no mistake because she is the Queen of Samba. and quite simply the greatest living interpreter/singer of Samba music. Virtually unknown in the United States, her music transcends all bounds of what cool and hip music really is. Her music is timeless and thanks to this CD, I've developed a great admiration and appretiation of her music. I now own most of Beth Carvalho's collection of albums available in this country and each one is a gem. So, enjoy this CD because I'm convinced that you'll still be smiling when you're listening to this classic collection in twenty years, and while you're at it, go out and get anything from Beth Carvalho and discover how her music can truly enhance your life.

5 out of 5 stars If one CD's needed, this is probably it.......1999-01-05

Great CD. Gives listener a taste of all of the sambas out there, from samba enredo to samba bossa nova to samba canção. All tracks are good and the liner notes are a good primer on Brasilian samba.

I purchased a Verve box set specifically for a Willie Bobo greatest hits CD, and this CD was included with it. If you enjoy Willie Bobo, Tito Puente, Bossa Nova, or albums featuring Latin percussion, you will enjoy this one. It has a wide variety of artists performing great Mambo tunes. Unlike much of Willie Bobo's work, and also a lot of Bossa Nova, these songs tend to be in a Big Band format, somewhat like Quincy Jones' Big Band Bossa Nova album. Great summertime music!

Those who love the quiet jazzy groove of bossa nova and the delicate voice of Caetano Veloso probably know about Vinicius Cantuária. A Brazilian songwriter who has written hits for Veloso and other countrymen, Cantuária's own music favors spare but by no means safe bossa nova-based arrangements that gently push at the music's edges without making a stink about it. Like the classics, nothing is rushed; there is no shouting. Here there is the whispered voice, gentle percussion, swingin' guitar, bass and a few other bits of sound filigree that float in and out. While recent efforts have an arty electronic sheen on the surface, Horse and Fish is almost all acoustic, the notable exception being Cantuária's airy Bill Frisell-like electric guitar tone on some material. Highlights include the gutsy remake of Gilberto Gil's "Procissao," the upbeat "Cubanos Postizos" and "Look The Sky." This one will creep inside you with the subtlety of osmosis. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Another off-center set by this Brazilian experimentalist.......2004-06-28

Another lowkey, jazz-tinged outing by this well-regarded Brazilian expatriate... Cantuaria has come a long way since his days as a percussionist in Caetano Veloso's late '70s band, and from his clunky early solo albums, where he tried to be a New Wave-y Brazilian answer to The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. Here he settles deep into a mellow world-jazz mode, as heavily influenced by his recent collaborations with guitarist Bill Frisell as by the hovering, angelic spectre of the late Miles Davis. Longtime collaborator Paulo Braga anchors the album's percussive end, with Mauro Refosco and other folks in the Rio-by-way-of-NYC axis. Most of the songs are Cantuaria originals, while some well-chosen cover tunes -- moody renditions of Roberto Menescal's "O Barquinho," Gilberto Gil's "Procissao," a couple by Jobim -- highlight Cantuaria's ability to reimagine and refashion the visions of other artists. This is an album that will grow on you: songs that at first may seem slick and overly informed by commercial jazz styling take on a subtle gravity, as his profoundly calm, quiet approach slowly asserts itself. Give this disc a couple of tries, and it will richly reward you.

Nine months before a certain other guitarist made a huge splash at a Monterey music festival, Brazilian acoustic guitarist Bola Sete left his own mark on an American jazz audience still feeding its voracious appetite for all things Brazilian. To be sure, Bola Sete didn't sneak up on the American public quite like Jimi Hendrix did--after all, Sete had made waves as part of Vince Guaraldi's ensemble in the years leading up to this historic 1966 performance. The classically trained Sete wowed fans with a unique style that seemed to fall somewhere between Andrés Segovia's elegance and Django Reinhardt's exuberance, a space not as wide as you might think. By the summer of '66, Sete had graduated to his own trio with bassist Sebastião Neto and percussion master Paulinho Da Costa.

The centerpiece of this performance is the three-song "Black Orpheus Medley," but Sete adds a pair of noteworthy originals. "Soul Samba" has subtle blues inflections that remind you that Barney Kessel was the first jazz guitarist to catch his ear. "Flamenco" is a simply stunning solo performance that blends challenging chording with incredibly speedy single-note runs, and offers the most overt example of his comfort with the folk traditions of his homeland. At some points, he amazingly plays his own bass accompaniment to his upper-register notes. This long-overdue 2000 CD reissue fleshes out the original LP release by adding 4 minutes to the medley as well as 2 unreleased cuts (with poorer sound quality) from the show, including a bossa nova arrangement of Ellington's "Satin Doll." --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars I've loved this album since 1973.......2006-10-14

I bought this in vinyl (obviously) in 1973, when I was 17, and I've been listening to it and loving it ever since. Could there be a higher compliment? Although my LP is in surprisingly good shape, I'm thrilled that it's been re-issued as a CD. I bought a copy for the house, and one for the car.

Soulful, unpretentious Brazilian Afro-jazz, with an intimate, candid, organic feel to it. The musicians are effortly masterful, without losing personality. They play games with each other, wrap melodies and percussion around each other, and provide the listener with pleasure, stimulation, and reward after reward. There are moments of humor, climaxes with the crowd roaring approval, and sponteneity is constant.

Thanks to Bola Sete, I've been listening to Brazilian jazz for three decades. I enjoy Jobim, Joao, Getz and Gilberto, as well, but Bola Sete at Monterey feels more personal to me. I hesitate to call Getz/Gilberto "contrived", but next to the sponteneity of Bola Sete, many of the better known samba practitioners feel over-rehearsed.

5 out of 5 stars BOLA SETE AT THE MONTEREY JAZZ FESTIVAL.......2000-09-25

This is a long overdue and terrific album by Bola Sete. I remember listening to some of his recordings during the 1950's in Cuba and I believe he traveled to Havana and performed on Cuban television. He was well known and admired everywhere. I'm glad I wrote to Fantasy Records in late 1996 or early 1997 and requested they release Bola's recordings with Vince Guaraldi on CD format. In 1998 the CD "From All Sides" with Vince and Bola was released. I'm glad to see it started a "revival" or re-issues of his recordings here and elsewhere. Bola Sete was and still is my favorite Brazilian guitarist and musician. His musical concepts and arrangements paved the way for the Bossa Nova. "Bola Sete Live at the 1966 Monterey Jazz Festival" is a special treat to all of us who saw and heard him perform in the "good old days". I'm also very happy that we have heard from Anna Sette and that she reviewed this great CD re-issue on my birthday, May 26! What a beautiful coincidence! At long last we can enjoy Bola's great recordings!

5 out of 5 stars Fiery latin jazz under the stars.......2000-06-25

I can only imagine what it must have been like to be in the audience at the Monterey Fairgrounds in September of 1966(I wasn't since I wasn't born yet! )when this amazing performance was recorded. The energy is so immediate and intense that it's hard to believe that there's only three musicians playing here. Sete plays along side bassist Sebastiao Neto and drummer Paulinho DaCosta, then relatively unknown but today is one of the most recorded musicians in history, look at the credits of any major album recorded in the last twenty five years, and you'll probably find his name. This long out of print album is back with three unreleased tracks and sounds wonderful. A must have if you love Brazilian jazz.
