Customer Reviews:
Pure salsa-mbalax smoke on the water.......2005-08-10
This is a sublime recording of Senegalese salsa. For lovers of the far more famous Orchestra Baobab, this surely is a must. "Xamsa Bopp," the recording's track opens the festivities, going from 0 to 60 in the blink of an eye from brief salsa intro into Mame (James) Pathe Gadiaga's absolutely committed and rocking vocals. If you aren't moving to the beat in the first 30 seconds, you aren't paying attention. I take that back; you don't have to be paying attention to find yourself rocking in your seat. On "Degoo" to say the organ smokes is an understatement; it smokes on water. On "Nawle," it feels as if the word, "sabor" was invented for guitar and vocal, and when the mbalax percussion kicks in, you can hear as good an example as there is of the Senegalese musical genius in the world music scene. There is one good track after another on this bad boy, but I'd leave the listener to make up his or her own superlatives. If you're having a dance party, you could do far worse than having this on your circle of featured sounds. Gunter Gretz at Popular African Music has done his usual spectacular job with the recording and mix; it's as if Super Cayor is right there in your living room. Lucky you.
