5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece!!.......2000-11-11

Juan Luis Guerra is simply brilliant. This album brings back some of the best memories from my high school/college years in Venezuela. These songs were so popular that nowadays are considered standard hits. They are guaranteed to make you dance and sing, no matter how hard you try to stand still!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2000-07-18

too bad there are no lyrics with it... there is actually nothing on the cover except a picture of Juan Luis Guerra, his name and the name of the album. Not a reason to dock this CD... but I guess lyrics would have been nice.

La primera vez que escuché Ojalá que llueva café estaba lloviendo en el techo de zinc de mi casita santiaguera. Fue maravilloso. Este es el mejor autor dominicano y uno de sus músicos más creativos. Este su mejor disco.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime!!!.......2006-05-11

Silvio, la mejor voz de America Latina y uno de sus mejores poetas nos regala un disco sublime y hermoso. Es dificil no emocionarse escuchando estas canciones.

5 out of 5 stars Cita con Angeles.......2004-02-23

Silvio just did it again!!. In this beautiful artwork he describes our current times and gives us a little bit of our resent history to help us to understand it. On "Cita con Angeles" Silvio refers to "Angels" rushing to save the lives of Jordano DiBruno, Federico Garcia Lorca, the innocent people of Hiroshima, Martin Luther King, Salvador Allende and the Trade World Center. It is a shame this cannot be translated to English.

5 out of 5 stars Las impreteritas canciones de Silvio.......2003-12-11

5 out of 5 stars Reencuentros.......2003-12-06

5 out of 5 stars Return to angelic form!.......2003-11-20

Many times better than weepy orchestral "Expedition" this release is Silvio at his political, emotional, poetic best with intimate and mature production touches. An album free of weakness or low points, Silvio has had a lot on his mind and heart, and like the best in the business, he delivers song after song with delicate guitar picking, emotional vocals, and the type of moods that turn stone-faced viewers of life and society back into teary-eyed romantics with hearts full of integrity and resolve. Politico y dramatico y muy lindo!! PRAISE SILVIO, true music royalty!

    5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of melancholy.......2002-03-21

As a matter of fact, the exact description of this record is this: it's a masterpiece!. Sure, if your idea of excellent music in spanish are the early records of Ricky Martin, well buddy... I got news for you: you're reading the wrong review.
Silvio Rodriguez's works belongs to another level, a very high one indeed; a fundamental piece of the "Nueva Trova Cubana" (next to another master: Pablo Milanes), the path follow by Silvio isn't exempt of controversy, mostly by his renuence to directly censure Fidel Castro, despite the fact that, in several of his best songs Silvio advocates human rights and strong social issues. But I think it's pretty safe to affirm that Silvio Rodriguez's main love it's Cuba, followed very close by Latin America, with all his people, landsights, handcrafts, problems, feelings... (hear him and name it).
This record, named after a street (like the Beatles's Abbey Road), it's focused about one feeling: melancholy, in his several ways: the lost dreams, the absent love (or simply love), the favorite toy, a fallen poet, some ancient ruins, and life itself, among other ways that melancholy often choose to reveal himself. With a personal preference for songs like: "En busca de un sueño", "Romanza de la luna, "Por todo tiempo, por todo espacio", "Las ruinas" and "Esta es la vida" (why?, my own melancholy perhaps...), I must say that all letters (all written by Silvio Rodriguez) are very good, with a strong sense of deepness and intensity, always with a message, a thought, to tell. The singing, also by Silvio Rodriguez, it's superb, with his peculiar and unforgettable voice. The music it's very simple, mostly guitars and "claves", but it's also very beautiful, worthy of the letters, and played by great musicians with great skill (Silvio itself between them).
This is a record to play it many times, as many as you wish, and you would hear or think something new every time; perhaps the first time you hear it you will find it a little boring (that happened to me!), but you should have a little bit of patience with it, and you will have an excellent record to listen for the times to come.
P.D. If you are learning, or likes, the spanish language, this record it's ideal for you, the spanish pronunciation it's very good, a plus for you.

      5 out of 5 stars Y Nada Mas.......2003-12-19

This is my Desert Island album. A co-worker played this album non-stop one summer, and I was just hooked. Of course, it was possibly the best summer of my life, so this music has that incredible association with it. I've carried this album around for years, and now I use it to calm my kids down when they are over-stimulated. Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I cry... but listening to this guy play always makes me happy.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps one of Silvio's best.......2002-01-04

Many, many years ago I bought this album in LP format as I was growing up (internally and physically). These tunes have accompanied my soul for decades. Why? Perhaps because Silvio's poetry and music have the rare ability of playing with your senses, heart and mind. Yes, as a previous reviewer mentioned, you need a sound knowledge of Spanish to fully enjoy it; however, the lyrics provided by the producer help a lot. Delicious metaphors, exquisite melodies, and some tongue-in-cheek poems are part of this CD that includes one of Silvio's most renowned songs: "Te Doy una Canción" (I give you a song), that was played by artists like Holly Near, and many singers from the New Latin American Song movement. "Mujeres" is a powerful homage to all women and the WOMAN to whom we all men belong. The surrealistic touch in most songs prevents them from becoming cliche or easy tunes. Besides if you try those tunes in your guitar you'll see your fingers tangled up! They seem to be easy but they are not! This CD is for all fans of Latin American music who cannot tolerate banality but yet, they are dreamers and lovers, "luchadores" for a better world.

5 out of 5 stars Por favor, quiero mi Mujeres!.......2001-03-07

I remember this disc when it was an audio tape that I purchased in 1981 in Madrid, Spain. It was a wild year abroad and I was a college student absorbing as much as I could of love and life. This music was my salvation during the culture shock of re-entry to the US. I heard En estos dias on the radio a couple of weeks ago and it's positively haunting me. I have so many associations with the songs, Aceitunas, Hoy no puedo estar lejos de la casa y el arbol, Y nada mas...songs filled with tenderness for a delicious state of the soul...fullness. Singing these songs, the words feel great in my mouth. I'll keep checking back for this simple masterpiece of Silvio Rodriguez. Thank you. Linda Sonrisa Rowland-Jones Big Sur, CA

3 out of 5 stars Mujeres (women) is not from this world.......2000-07-26

Silvio Rodríguez does not belong to this world. Someone with such a talent for touching the most intimate fibres of your heart, turn your life upside down, make you cry, laugh, despair, rage, love and hate does not belong to this world... or this life. "Mujeres" is one of the best examples of this. Unfortunately only good Spanish speakers will appreciate the poetry in the lyrics. Others may enjoy the music, anyway. I can't find words to praise this work enough.

3 out of 5 stars Juna Luis Guerra's early years.......2003-11-19

Sometimes you get a CD because you have heard one song and end up pleasantly surprised with the rest of the disc. Such was the case with this disc by JLG and his interpretation of the often recorded "Ojala Que Llueva Cafe." What distinguises the JLG version is the uptempo quasi-merengue beat and the chorus (sounds like children in parts) by 4:40. This disc finds JLG in his formative years as he stepped into the lead role of the group he was part of known as 4:40. This is a collection of merengue songs that have a pop feel to them. "La Gallera" is a merengue number that is gospel tinged for a soulful bit of Caribbean groove. "Woman Del Callo" is one of the mainstays of the JLG repertoire that features JLG singing in English and Spanish as the feeling suits him. He shifts languages effortlessly as the frenzied beat takes you away. "Reina Mia" is quite interesting as the background vocals of the chorus hum in a sort of African style made popular to American audiences by Paul Simon's "Rhythm of The Saints." "On Angel Para Una Tambora" JLG returns to his roots in 4:40 and becomes one voice as part of the chorus. For fans of JLG this is a nice departure disc that reveals his talents as a lead artist. A solid effort by by one of merengue's original artists to expose the intoxicating rhythms worldwide. There are no liner notes and not even music credits! With it's frenetic yet rhythmic beat the running time of 32:10 goes by even faster!

5 out of 5 stars Silvio, a singing poet or a poetical singer?.......2003-11-19

Undoubtly, Silvio Rodriguez has become a living legend in Latin American music (I mean real music, i.e. meaningful music). This CD is just another proof.

Another reviewer discovered what -in my honest opinion- could be the most outstanding piece of poetry that Silvio has ever written: "Tu fantasma" or "Your ghost." Yes, it is a love song but I do hope that non-Spanish speakers can get the depth of its lyrics. The "ghost" is the memory of a loved one who seemingly departed for some time. There are a dozen metaphors in the lyrics that are comical and represent exaggerations of everyday's events. Example phrases are: "the phone persists in collecting absurdities" or "bugging me keeps being a world sport" or "the door is worn out where the world has knocked in." In this everyday business the poet feels her absence. Everything reminds the poet of his love: the "ghost" (the memory) becomes real and painful, assaulting him from every corner of his home. This is pristine poetry, surreal but not that much. It is as if the soul of Cesar Vallejo had pervaded through Silvio's verses. The music is a beautiful backdrop: it is a crescendo reinforcing the increasing pain for the distant lover. WHAT A MASTERPIECE!

The rest of the CD is also outstanding but lacks the profound lyricism of Tu fantasma. Some songs come somewhat close: "La gota de rocío" (The dew droplet), or "Que signo lleva el amor" (What sign does love bear). "Yo te quiero libre" is less subtle and a little cliche (for my taste at least) but carries a nice tune that evens the scale.

There is only one problem with this CD (or the LP that I bought "one lifetime ago" to paraphrase Silvio...): it's so short! You end up asking for more poetry. Want more? Get the other two CDs that complete the triad or "Triptico."

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful song with unforgettable memories.......2003-05-18

This album was strongly recommended by my collegue. Before that, I didn't have any occasion to listen to Cuban music.
I was very impressed with this album, especially first song "Tu Fantasma". The song depicts a man who is still clinging to memory of former girlfriend. I suppose there might be many people who see themselves in the lyrics to this song. If you are one of them, listening to this song can be agonizing but it will surely give you a wonderful moment. I strongly recommend this album to those who cherish unforgettable memories.
