A great Don (except for the sound).......2007-06-27
Moreover, like the previous reviewer, I am glad that EMI is releasing this set for a reasonable price, and it is a good companion to the classic Giulini set (although I would recommend other versions of the opera as well - even some of the "period" interpretations).
IT'S A GREAT ONE!.......2006-01-29

Una de la mejores interpretaciones en CD del Cosi fan tutte.......2006-11-16
Overrated, but decent.......2006-03-29
My biggest complaint about this recording is the merciless abridgement. It seems like the powers that be were more interested in getting from aria to aria as quickly as possible, and so the recitatives were butchered to that end. That rankles me to no end, because opera isn't just about pretty music, it's about drama too! And the recitatives are an integral part of the drama. Ferrando's beautiful aria "Ah lo veggio" fell victim to this abridgement as well. Though that didn't stop me from considering Bohm's version as the best "first Cosi," there's just not enough merit in the rest of Karajan's recording to compensate for such a huge loss.
In regards to Schwarzkopf's performances as Fiordiligi, I think the Bohm version is far better. Though her voice is fresher and lighter here, I think the maturity and experience she gained by the Bohm recording fits Fiordiligi's character a lot better. This is not to say that her Karajan performance is mediocre, just not quite as marvelous.
Another thing that really bugs me about this recording is that this Don Alfonso sounds much too young, certainly too young to be so cynical. I prefer the more mainstream, mature Don Alfonso (like Cachemaille). I'm also not overly fond of their choice for Despina, who pronunces words funny. It's a really small matter, but it bugs me (kinda like how Kathleen Battle's Despina-with-American-accent bugs me).
Basically, this recording is worth getting if you already own Bohm's, Jacobs', Mackerras' and Solti's recordings. The only reason to get this recording is to hear the young Schwarzkopf, because there's nothing else there.
Which classic Cosi to buy--Karajan or Bohm?.......2006-03-20
Karajan (1954): This mono recording is in good enough sound to compete successfully with Bohm's stereo version, with the singers placed very close up. They achieve a great deal of intimacy and nuance. Karajan favors tempo extremes, taking Schwarzkopf's two big arias, as well as her opening duet with Merriman, quite slowly. Stylistically, his approach is ultra-suave, which yields benefits in Bruscantini's sly urbanity as Don Alfonso, for example, but in the long run proves more than a little precious. As Fiordiligi, Schwarzkopf is younger and fresher than in Bohm's set, but there she has gained in artistry. Simoneau and Panerai are great as the two heros, probably the best pair on records. Nan Merriman as Dorabella is musically satisfying, but she has a fast beat in her voice that wears after a while.
Bohm (1963): This later performance is in good stereo, with the voices placed further from the mike than in Karajan's recording. Where Karajan is suave, Bohm is blunt. He misses many opportunities for subtle phrasing, yet given the choice, I'd rather hear his plain-faced Cosi than Karajan's overly sophisticated one. As to tempos, bohm is rrelaxed and often just as slow as Karajan--period performances from Ostmann, Gardiner and Jacobs go much faster. In the Karajan set the men were stronger than the laides; here it's the reverse. Schwarzkopf and Ludwig make ideal sisters, unrivalled for their musicality, even if Schwarzkopf can no longer quite negotiate Fiodiligi's cruelly difficult arias. The male pair are certainly good, but I find Alfredo Kraus's voice dry and his manner stiff; Taddei is fine, howevr. Walter Berry makes for a bluff Don Alfonso without a trace of Bruscantini's sly malice.
Naturally, thee's much more to say in detail, but I think I've given a fair sketch of the two performances. I've lived with both for a long time, and it pains me to say that on balance I prefer Karl Bohm, even though he is far from being a favorite conductor. The comvinaiton of Schwarzkopf and Ludwig carries the day.
AN INEXPENSIVE EDITION OF A CLASSIC PERFORMANCE.......2006-01-30
Schwarzkopf is well contrasted by Nan Merriman's Dorabella. Merriman was an American mezzo who frequently sang at the Met, and who could reach impressive vocal and interpretive heights when surrounded by artists of the caliber encountered in this performance. I know of no tenor recorded in the role of Ferrando who sounds as honeyed and lyrically beautiful as Leopold Simoneau -------this French-Canadian tenor was surely one of the great Mozart singers of virtually any generation. Rolando Panerai's light baritone is ideal for Guglielmo (Panerai was a used by EMI in a good share of their earliest Callas operas - and always made a good impression), and his sense of comedy is apt and highly appropriate in a role which, to be most effective, can't be overdone. Sesto Bruscantini, with his extensive experience in the buffo operas of Rossini, provides a robust Don Alfonso, and Lisa Otto is a cute and incisive Despina.
EMI is to be commended for making this wonderful performance available at such an inexpensive price. When it comes to Mozart operas, especially with the recordings EMI made in the 1950's, older is definitely better! Now ---- they need to release their legendary recording of "Die Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail" with Leopold Simoneau. Highly recommended.

Heck, I Don't Even Like Most Opera.......2002-02-24
Anyways, these CD's present a vast quantity of quality recordings culled from Mozart's famous Operas making it a great introduction to those works. I especially love the second CD and find the tracks from The Magic Flute to be unbelievably beautiful -- including a very nice rendition of Pa-pap-gena! Pa-pa-geno.
My favorite track, though, remains 'Soave sia il vento' from Cosi Fan Tutte. For this sublime track alone, I am glad I bought this CD.

Great Combo of Mozart Arias.......2001-01-14
Great for Beginners.......2000-05-02
1st -- Most importantly for the beginner, it is DIRT CHEAP. Especially when considering that there are two CD's. WOW.
2nd -- The variety is great, and the CD chooses the most popular arias and duets from each of the operas.
3rd -- The singers aren't complete unknowns as in other Seraphim CD's. So you have some pretty good singers singing good songs like Hermann Prey singing a favorite of mine "Ein Madchen oder Weibchen," or Teresa Berganza singing "Voi, che sapete." So you are getting some quality for your small investment.
I love the fact that this CD includes those three attributes. It's a fantastic way for beginners to be introduced into the world of opera without too much risk if they end up not liking it at all... But I'm sure they'll love Mozart since most people do.
I must warn people though, do try and stay away from compilations of music that attest that they have everything that you could want from a composer. There are lesser known works that are absolutely fantastic and should be recognized and heard. I only recommend this compilation to beginners, and anyone who is truly interested in opera should be buying complete opera CD's, and even better, be going to hear operas live, as they should be heard.
A Great Sampling of Mozart Arias.......1999-11-05

An Absolute Must For Lovers of Music and History.......2001-01-20
A real collector's item, especially for old-time radio buffs.......2000-09-24
This was broadcast on CBS Radio in September,1937, barely two months after the composer's shocking and untimely death from a brain tumor at the age of thirty-eight. All of his most famous pieces for concert hall are heard here, and the advantage of hearing them in a live performance is that they are not edited, as they often would have been in recordings made during that era. (Gershwin's own recording of the "Rhapsody in Blue",made in the 1920's in a recording studio,is rather severely cut.)
Many of the performers, such as Fred Astaire and Oscar Levant, give memorable performances, but there are a few clinkers. The great German conductor Otto Klemperer may be brilliant in Beethoven and Bach, but he was not the man to conduct Gershwin's Second Prelude, heard here in an orchestral arrangement. He has no feel for jazz idioms whatsoever, and he makes this slow, blues-like piece sound like a dirge out of Mahler or Bruckner. It is,sad to say, the worst performance of the Prelude I have ever heard. And whatever possessed the producers of this concert to get Lily Pons, with her pronounced French accent,to sing "Summertime", rather than an American soprano, which they could have gotten easily? It throws the whole "Porgy and Bess" segment out of whack.
That "Porgy" segment, however, is one of the most valuable historical documents ever recorded. It presents members of the original 1935 cast of the opera performing unedited versions of several arias, duets and ensemble pieces from the opera, conducted by Alexander Smallens, the original conductor. And it presents perhaps the only surviving recording of Ruby Elzy, the original Serena, singing "My Man's Gone Now". (Miss Elzy was NOT featured on the so-called Broadway cast album; Anne Brown, the original Bess, sang Serena's music on that one,as well as singing Bess and Clara's arias.) And we finally get to hear Todd Duncan perform "The Buzzard Song", which was cut from the opera for a very long time.
Fred Astaire's spoken tribute to Gershwin is very moving, and at one point, his voice is heard cracking with emotion. The announcer and narrator, however, speaks in that overenunciated, dramatic, actorish style which was apparently the norm for radio announcers of that period. He sounds as if he were getting ready to either impersonate Orson Welles, or audition for "Hamlet", and his style of speaking is almost quaint nowadays.
But this album is still irreplaceable.
An update to this review - This edition of the memorial concert is apparently out of print, and the concert itself has been reissued as part of the ongoing CD series "The Radio Years". DO NOT BUY THAT VERSION. It is vastly inferior to this one. This version has spectacular sound for its time, and the new reissue sounds as if had been recorded through a tin can. And not only is the sound bad on the reissue, but there is tons of surface noise and the program itself seems to be abridged.
We can only hope that the edition listed on this page will be re-issued some day. This historic concert deserves no less.

The Essential Coloratura Album.......2007-02-16
Together with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Rita Streich studied voice with Maria Ivogun, a great coloratura soprano of the German-Austro school. Together with her colleague, Streich excelled in the Viennese-style coloratura singing. This album presents her wide range of repertoire from Austro-German to French to Italian opera; from classical opera to romantic Strauss operetta; from lieder to folk songs.
What this album does NOT include is Streich's Russian repertoire, some thing that, owing to her maternal descent, she was most adept at.
Unlike Schwarzkopf, Streich owned a voice that is out-right lyrical. It is even lighter, even more agile, even more silvery, though not as forceful as Schwarzkopf's on demand. Listen to her delightful "Bastien und Bastienne", her Mozart concert arias and enjoy her highly articulated, musically refined delivery. It is the exemplary Viennese singing. Her soubrettes as well as lyrical heroines are nothing short of being superb.
Not being as internationalised a singer as Schwarzkopf, Streich nonetheless was a representative figure of Viennese coloratura singing. Some times I would even feel that her coloratura is even more superior to that of the great dramatic coloratura of the 20th century, Joan Sutherland, again a very much more internationalised singer than Streich.
If you are undergoing voice training, this box set is essential.

COMMENT & SUMMARY.......2007-02-07
PRODUCT SUMMARY:
"Jennifer Larmore's exceptional affinity with the bel canto repertoire, supported by her formidable technical armoury, has allowed Opera Rara the luxury of recording for this disc some of the most difficult vocal music of the 19th century. Virtuosity, then, is the theme of this album. It features music written for several of the greatest singers of the early 19th century, including Carolina Bassi, Rosmonda Pisaroni, Isabella Colbran and Maria Malibran. A lot has been written about the vocal abilities of these legendary singers. The music they sang is often very florid, the drama reinforced by pyrotechnical vocal hurdles, which on paper look just this side of impossible. It's only when you hear a singer of the calibre of Jennifer Larmore actually leaping those hurdles that you begin to understand what the fuss was all about. Works by Costa, Rossini, Pacini, Mercadante and Lauro Rossi are all featured on this CD which is accompanied by a fully coloured 100 page booklet with notes on each contribution written by the eminent specialist in 19th century opera Jeremy Commons." - Opera Rara
Fine chocolate, indeed!.......2006-05-17
The reference to a voice like chocolate turned up in the promos and the review of her concert in March at the Eastman School of Music. And it's really not as crazy as it sounds, for Jennie's voice, like fine chocolate, is dark and sweet, and addictive. Unlike chocolate, however, it has no calories.
This is music to smooth out the frayed nerves of a hard day, or a hard life, and this is a voice to hear in your head all day.
Brava, Bravura Diva.......2006-03-01
Even after Giulio Cesare at the Met or Carmen at the Washington Opera. Or a Master Class at the Yale Music School.
More than perhaps any other mezzo today, Larmore brings her unique vocal artistry and dramatic verve to a range of well- known, as well as less well-known opera works, and brings them to vivid life.
One can only look forward to a similar collection of Larmore's
magnificent talents in the Baroque repertory. There is good reason to hope for Bravura Diva, Part II.
A New Queen Reigns in Bel Canto Singing.......2005-11-22
Arias by such composers as Sir Michael Costa, Luigi Arditi, Lauro Rossi, and Giovanni Pacini don't exactly ring familiar bells with the general public, but here Larmore gives this fine music the communication it needs to acquaint us with some splendid operas. Larmore is well known for her Rossini roles of the known works of the composer so it is with a bow to her musicality that she offers here arias from the lesser known operas 'Bianca e Falliero' and 'Elisabetta, regina d'Inghilterra'. She also gives us portions of Mercadante ('Andronico') not readily available on the stage, and while these arias are somewhat obscure Larmore delivers them with a rich, robust vocal color and facile technique that make them important. These arias were the territory of the infamous Pauline Viardot and Maria Malibran who in many ways 'created' bel canto, and like her predecessors Joan Sutherland and Marilyn Horne, she is up there with the best of them.
Various conductors and orchestras are represented on this collection (some from previous recordings of entire operas) and the support from the conductors and other singers with whom she sings ensembles is consistently fine. Jennifer Larmore's time has come and this album is titled appropriately! Grady Harp, November 05
