Product Description
The long-awaited follow-up to 1997’s 'Iliana' finds Casolando delivering just what we want to hear. 'La Sirena' still beautifully evokes the music of Old Latin America, but goes new places with additional instrumentation and a live, in-the-room production quality that recalls the feel of the recent Buena Vista Social Club releases.

Many of the songs will be familiar to fans of the band’s live performances, though the tracks have been pared down from the lengthy instrumental jams usually featured at those shows. Still, it’s all here: The rich vocals of Carlos Ortega accompanied by his flawless guitar rhythms, the vocal harmonies and fiery classical guitar of Charlie Baran, the jazzy electric bass solos from Dave Hiltebrand, and the varied and as always perfect percussion of Chuck Sansone.

From the opening notes of the gorgeous ‘Dulce Amargo’ to the plaintive ‘Guajira’ to the stunning instrumental ‘Turbina’, this album is about love and love lost and dancing and stellar musicianship all rolled into one. The title track will take your breath away.

La Sirena features guest appearances from Merritt Lear of the Celt-rocker Drovers, and Ross Bergseth from Chicago pop sensations Frisbie.

5 out of 5 stars Yet Another Jewel In My Collection.......2003-12-09

As a lover of Early Music, I have collectd several of the best works put out on CD over the years, and now have a nice little library of this genera music. And this disc on the Helios label, which features Italian works from the early 17th century, fits in well. It is highly recomended as an introduction to the "Late Renaissance" style, which was by this time highly popular throuout Europe, especially in England, where a vogue for all things Italian was all the rage in the court of Elizabeth I. The instrumental works feature viols(the parents of our modern bowed string instruments), as well as harpsicord and regal(a sort of medieval pump organ). All in all, a great disc that will enrich the musical tastes of those who hear it.

Album Description

The Sephardic Experience quadrilogy, is a priceless sound document in which The Renaissance Players present their own performance versions of well- and lesser-known romansas (ballads), kantigas (religious songs) and muwashshahat (poetical forms) which have survived for centuries entirely via oral/aural transmission by parents, grandparents, friends and acquaintances within the family circle, while working, or as a form of ad hoc entertainment in Sephardic communities of the West and East. Sadly, as the end of the 20th century draws near we are witnessing the alarming disappearance of Spanish-Jewish culture due to vast, worldwide changes in social circumstances. In fact, these songs are no longer a part of the rich, musical fabric of the everyday life of the Sephardim.

This collection of Spanish-Jewish songs and Mediterranean dance tunes in this second volume, Apples and Honey, are named for the joyful celebrations of Rosh Ha-Shanah, the head of the year. The texts of the muwashshah and kantigas evoke images of the sea and the river (powerful forces for the Sephardim in their post-expulsion Mediterranean settlements) and water. These are, in their turn, connected with exile, the siren, the moon, and various marriage customs. Various procedures related to Arabic and Balkan music are followed here: improvised instrumental taksim-like preludes, interludes between stanzas, repetition of the solo singer's line by a chorus of voices and/or instruments, lively, celebratory ululation by chorus singers, a variety of chest- and head-voice timbres, constant ornamentation of melodic lines, measured and unmeasured metres, and simple and complex additive rhythms. Likewise, a wide variety of arrangement is demonstrated.

The four volumes of The Sephardic Experience ( Thorns of Fire, Apples and Honey, Gazelle and Flea and Eggplants) can be purchased individually or together in a beautiful hand-wrapped black linen box.

The music is beautiful, soft and truly just great for having on in the background while you're doing something else. I haven't heard the first volume, so can't compare it with that.

5 out of 5 stars MY FAVORITE CD!!!!.......2007-02-11

Let me tell you - I bought this CD twice because the first one got scratched up so bad I couldn't listen to anything. I LOVE LA NEF!!! My 132nd wish is to see this troupe live in concert!!! :D

Okay. "Music for Joan the Mad" is about musicians stuck inside the queen's chamber trying to appease her insanity. If you read the bible - remember Saul & David? Sort of the same theme, only he had demons and she's just crazy.

I LOVE THIS CD...nothing could appease this woman. She was mad because something happened to her love (her husband) and it drove her crazy. So she won't leave her chambers or the castle and insists on being entertained in her room.

At the end of the cd, she's still crazy but you will fall in love with love with this troupe!!

    5 out of 5 stars A Mysterious Treat Honoring a Mythical Queen.......2007-01-25

This music is amazing to listen to, to absorb, to live with, and the story behind it, which is on the liner notes and I do not recall in exact detail, is also fascinating. (When I get my ordered copy, I'll update this) Apparently, the legend these musicians are recreating in their modern imagining of the Iberian music, is that of a queen who was called Mad by her husband, and put into exile. She so loved music that her musicians chose to go into exile with her, and play for her, rather than leave her to live alone. The songs, even if you don't know the translations, suggest melancholy, rebellious, defiant joy in the midst of pain and loss, and the defiant beauty of art in dark times--the constant strength of voices and songs that can transmit anywhere, with passion.

    5 out of 5 stars Almost perfect..........2004-12-03

If you enjoy early music, and you are not a purist, but just looking for pleasure, you must get this CD. This is NOT the music that Colombus was playing while sailing across the Atlantic. No. This music is the smartest artifice, the most intelligent mix of powerful rhythms and cultural influences. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Enter another world..........2003-05-27

Wow. Few CDs have ever struck me as much as La Nef's "Music for Joan the Mad" has. It was the album that introduced me to this remarkable group that recreates medieval music so we can hear it today.

"Music for Joan the Mad" would be categorized as "Spanish Classical". During this time (around the late 15th century) Spain was at its height, and the music was very regal and flowing, also influenced by Arab traditions. Indeed there are many Arab influences on this album, from the beautiful instruments (I think I heard an oud on one of the tracks) to the wonderful vocals. La Nef has truly recreated the glory days of Spain.

Whenever I hear this CD (and that is often), I always imagine myself walking through a 15th Century Spanish castle, the stone walls echoing with the plucks of guitars and the melodies of a soprano. If you're even remotely interested in transporting yourself back in time, listen to the sample tracks and buy the CD. You won't regret it...

4 out of 5 stars Music to lie down and die to.......2002-03-05

When one finds an ensemble of musicians who have chosen a time and a place to honour, or replicate, or interpret with skillful passion, take note and investigate for yourself what distant scenery could inspire artists so.

Joan The Mad deserves such respect. I hardly review or rate albums, but this particular one deserves a notation. The album begins on a sordid note that is the doorway to an ancient place of exotic sounds blended with classical givens. The Moors have made their mark on this Iberian album that gives a sense of ancient Arabian masters feasting with their Spanish hosts.

Pause to open this doorway and enter a forgotten time and listen to music classical in genre, yet forever a stranger to the ears.

Scored by Lucio Godoy, the album consists of finely crafted music that captures the essence and emotion of the film directed by Fernando Leon de Aranoa. Traditional Spanish guitars, wind instruments and reoccurring melodies accompany the desperate lives that tell this story beginning in utter loss and ending in complete hope and acceptance. 20 tracks including the instrumental & vocal performances of 'On The Other Side Of The World' by Tom Waits. The songs are very good, but the recording is so poor, my brand new speakers sound ripped when I play the cd. The band's first cd is magic, too bad they didn't record at the same studio and get a quality product for this release.

5 out of 5 stars the case of the missing CD..........2000-10-26

I've heard this CD at one of the many ubiquitous listening posts at a nearby, brightly lit, bustling Tower Records--right beside a nice display with several dozen of the shrinkwrapped plastic disks. A great follow-up to "Ileana" with lively and captivating vocals and driving guitars. I thought the recent Ketama release (Toma Ketama!) was fun to hear--this is better. Buy it now, but obviously not at Amazon where it's still listed as not released!

You shouldn't by this cd in hopes that the music within will change your life forever. This has to be the worst cd that I have ever listened to in my life. BUT, when your high, driving through Pisgah National Forest, at midnight, with the speakers blaring, in a huge van, and with tons of people, its hillarious. When I heard the first song on this cd, I called it Mexican Korn. I guarantee you that if you listen to "Caught at the Door" all the way through, you can't keep yourself from laughing. It's so incredebly horrible that its good. I recommend this cd to anyone who loves driving music, breaking the law, and laughing.

Old Time Relijun aren't the most original band in the world. They aren't doing anything somebody hasn't done before. But, knowing that, they still dish out some serious rock n roll with capital R's. Buy this album, if anything, for a smokin' bass clarinet solo.
