From his childhood on the family farm in rural Tuscany to the worldwide stage, Andrea Bocelli has achieved phenomenal success. His singing is only partially the point, and his fame owes much more to the aura of romance and the romantic archetype that's attached to him. Romanza is by far Bocelli's largest success, winning adoration thanks to the swooning vocals and the easy, sometimes lush, always pop-safe instrumental textures and melodies. As far as his opera chops go, Bocelli has won the approval of Pavarotti but likely will not wow enthusiasts. The upside is that Bocelli will likely grow the opera pie, convincing labels to take on more operatic projects. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Bias I Confess.......2007-07-06

I confess to loving Italian music and opera in addition to Rock & Roll, Country and music in general.

This music is good when you want to relax or have a lady over 40 you want to entertain.

Is the Devil incarnate." (Inglese italianato e un diavolo incarnate) Or so I've heard. I suppose the author (I read it in a copy of Machiavelli's The Prince) could be forgiven for not having heard Don Bocelli and Donna Brightman sing "Con Te Partiro" - can we now say Inglese italianata e un angelo incarnate?

The rest of the album is a collection of ballads, most of which suffer from weak or clashing instrumentals. An exception is "Macchine Da Guerra" which has a pleasant and comparatively strong piano accompaniment.

I'd like to thank Kenny McCormick of South Park, CO for turning me on to Don Bocelli.

What a voice, it soars with the arias and bops with the more contemporary. Especially love the song about Caruso. Andrea is un cantante bello, un uomo bello! Turn this one up with the top down and let it sing you home.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!.......2007-05-18

I bought this cd again after losing my original copy that I bought the year it was released. Out of all my Bocelli cds this is my favorite. It has a good mix of classic opera with popera and really shows his abilities. I have used this cd to turn people on to opera and popera, and the results have been incredible! Once you hear him, you cannot deny his talent and passion. Simply AMAZING!!!

4 out of 5 stars Andrea in the 90's.......2007-04-20

Andrea is incredible. His romantic poetry with music is unparalleled. The only downside to this album is the inescapable 90's feel.If you don't mind it,then buy this album. If you do,then buy 'Time To Say Goodbye'off iTunes and get Sogno,Andrea,or Cieli di Toscana.

Monteverdi's Fourth Book of Madrigals for five voices was a real ground-breaking work: the composer tossed aside the rules of classical counterpoint and harmony, making the music subservient to the text it delivered--creating extraordinary pictorial and emotive effects that are surprising even today. Here's just one example: in "Si, ch'io vorrei morire," the voices enter successively on the line "Ahi, car'e dolce lingua" ("Ah, dear sweet tongue"), each voice extending its phrase while the next two voices above enter in their turn, the lines caressing and colliding with each other like the tongues of kissing lovers, the dissonant suspensions like frissons of passion. Concerto Italiano's performance is a revelation: each quicksilver change in tempo or volume is beautifully judged, yet sounds completely spontaneous and natural. --Matthew Westphal

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A stunning recording.......2005-07-04

If I had to single out one recording of madrigals to recommend this might quite possibly be it. The performances by Alessandrini and Concerto Italiano are everything the critics have been raving about for a number of years now. They really do take the cake when it comes to being the outstanding madrigal performers of our times - although we now have La Venexiana, who can be put on the same level. The singing here represents a degree of refinement in expressive eloquence that is previously unheard of in this repertoire. This makes this CD gripping listening from start to finish even though all works are sung a capella.

The recording is also well up to the usual high standards of Opus 111.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh, luminous and touching!.......2005-06-14

The best book of Monteverdi sung the very best by the best singers.
This crew - which main members now sing in La Venexiana - must have some strange affinity to Monteverdi! It never sounds 'old' or 'ancient'; you feel rather that Monteverdi is some modern composer, or you feel how young his inventive style must have been felt by his contemporaries. Concerto Italiano - i.e. until the mid 90ies - had some kind of 'analytical' approach, slow, high definition, sophisticated, clear, fresh, young, shining - like the first spring! This luxury production never feels cold or boring, from the first madrigals, 'Ah dolente partita', 'Cor mio' and so on, it is very, very touching. A more happy madrigal like 'A un giro sol de' bell'occhi lucenti' is really a wonder. Rossana Bertini's shrill soprano is specially striking. Highly recommended! I also recommend The second book - Amazon: B0000260SF - by the same group and The third book - Amazon: B00006B1R7- by La Veneziana; almost the same crew and surely the same style.

5 out of 5 stars A very musical and lively recording........1998-12-16

Concerto Italiano gives a refreshing interpretation of Monteverdi's madrigals. Apart from being a well and musically sung recording, it is the expression of the lyrics which makes this CD unique. From listening it is clear that the madrigals were meant to be sung this way: One hears the birds, the wind, the sea and, of course, many lamenting lovers. (Be sure to keep the booklet handy when listening !)

Although the revival of renaissance music has produced many nice recordings (i.e. Kirby), these all seem a bit academic now. Also the other CD-s by this ensemble are worthwhile, but this one is the top. Thank you Concerto Italiano !

Italian Soprano Renata Tebaldi was One of the Most Important Post-war Sopranos to Tackle a Wide Range of Puccini Roles, and During the 1950s She Recorded Several Complete Opera Recordings. Some of the Operas were Recorded Twice — in Mono and Then in Stereo. Amongst Those which Tebaldi Committed to Disc in the Recording Studio on Two Occasions Must Be Included La Bohème and Madama Butterfly. It is the Earlier, Mono Recordings of These Two Operas which Are Included Here and They Reveal a Fresh-voiced Tebaldi in Recordings Which, Despite the Stereo Remakes, have Stood the Test of Time.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Tebaldi's art.......2005-09-29

This set covers the entire productive years of Tebaldi's recording career. Turandot, Butterfly and Boheme are from her earlier career while Tosca is from her later career. Since this Tosca recording is now out of print and is somewhat hard to find, this recording itself almost worth the cost of the set. In Turandot, you will find Tebaldi at her fresher voice, lovely and melting. Eventhough I would still rate Callas' first recorded Tosca as my first choice, this Tosca comes very close. Enjoy.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderfull.......2005-08-19

Fantastic recordings at a very good price. Tebaldi and Del Monaco rule. You should definetely own this set.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Renata.......2005-03-16

To say that these 12 disks contain some of the finest singing ever committed to disk is no exaggeration, but a simple statement of fact. Historical fact. In the 100 years (more or less) that Puccini operas have been around, only a few sopranos in each generation have been the equal of Renata Tebaldi. One cannot objectively say that anyone has surpassed her. Some opera lovers find her peerless in many of these performances. Personal tastes in singers vary, but no one ever sang these roles better. Few anywhere nearly so well. There is not a single note on any of these recordings that is not heartfelt to the core of her being. Like Maria Callas and Franco Corelli, she was luminous, gargantuan in her talent that personified an age. This is one of the great compilations.

4 out of 5 stars The Power of Bocelli!!.......2001-11-11

The two most wonderful things for me about this album are 1) the earlier renditions of songs I first heard on ROMANZA, which as a devoted fan are fascinating and historical, and 2) hearing that sweet and powerful voice in English singing The Power of Love...I adore the Italian language and agree that AB has his best sensibilities in his native tongue....but....WOW!!! This one knocked my socks off!!!

5 out of 5 stars This man does it because he loves it, NOT for the money.......2000-12-30

Hell hath no fury like a woman who has a favorite singer then feels that she must give him up. Shaun Greenleaf's wicked review on that blind Pavolian Public s**t really jammed a nail into my head. Sorry, I know everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion, but whenever someone gives remarks on Bocelli like you did, I go a little crazy. I mean, a LOT crazy. I don't want to diss the Three Tenors either because I heard them before and liked them, but Bocelli was completely different from them all. Even Pavarotti said so himself: Andrea is finer than even him.

So, Mr. Greenleaf, don't show your wrath against Bocelli and insist that we give him up for Carreras, Caruso, Domingo, or any other tenor who's "made a record" if we can't let Bocelli go. If we want to continue to admire him for what he is, we will. In THIS world of so-called "superstars" such as Madonna (at least she's trying to stop being the silly indecent woman she'd always been), 'N Sync, Jennifer López, Ricky Martin, the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, in other words, people who show their bodies and girate just to be the big thing (but to be nice to them did something for the public to enjoy) and who don't have the vocal talent that the likes of Stevie Wonder, Lauryn Hill, Céline Dion, and even--no big surprise--Sarah Brightman do, a man like our very own Andrea Bocelli who doesn't expose himself to the MTV radioplay media hype gets treated like s**t? I have to speak up for my Bocelli because of that.

I do agree that he's not up to opera standards, I prefer his pop side more than his opera side, but I can't say he's horrible. An Enhanced CD by him would be nice, but then again, who needs an ECD and all sorts of t-shirts and souvenirs to become famous? The Backstreet Boys have been around only five years going on six, and they've plastered themselves on too many things to mention. Hope they come of age someday (like Madonna is) and learn that one doesn't need a whole bunch of things to get to where they want to be. Look at Lauryn Hill. It took her nothing more than superb songwriting and singing talent and positive messages to become successful. And her Miseducation CD didn't even NEED enhanced features.

The same I'd like to say for Bocelli. It's his voice that got him to the level of superstar and little else. My belief is that Andrea, who loves opera, is doing it just because that is his love. When he sings "Vivo per lei" and that music is the one whom he never betrayed, he is absolutely right. He's not doing it for the money (I hope not). Not to say that those teen stunts like BSB and 'N Sync are hell-bound, to be fair to them. I'm just letting you know this.

2 out of 5 stars Bocelli Import Extra.......2000-11-17

Overall album just NOT normal quality. Not worth the money. I love Bocelli so listened again today to Sogno and Romanza and there is no comparison. Albeit, there is a rawness to the voice and simplicity of music that has some appeal.

5 out of 5 stars My souls cried out loud!.......2000-07-28

This album is extremely beautiful! It is now one of my favorites and is very touching to the heart and soul. Andrea's voice is very moving and powerful. It sounds like an angel singing from Heaven! I don't want this song to come out of my head, it's way too perfect to forget!

5 out of 5 stars Donýt feel ashamed, people........2000-07-09

Obviously, I don't own this album, as all except two of these songs are featured on another CD I bought, "Romanza" (it's the bomb!). Those songs from this 1995 follow-up to "Il Mare Calmo Della Sera" nearly gave me an idea as to why Andrea emerged as the most popular classical stunt in America so quickly. I never heard the bilingual version of "Vivo Per Lei" (with Judy Welm), but part of it is in German, and I don't speak German. Nor did I ever hear "The Power of Love" (there have been many songs under this title, hope this one isn't a remake!) or "Sempre, Sempre."

Oh, well. It doesn't really matter, since I already have "Romanza." However, dead-serious Bocelli fans wanting to complete their collection won't care.

5 out of 5 stars Rare recordings, ideal for opera learners.......2005-04-21

Though this cd has to be made instantly, it still comes as fast as the other ones.
It contains Donaudy's classic and rare works, with piano accompany, it's ideal for opera learners to adjust to piano accompanyment and get the sense of old italian songs.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Recording.......2004-01-11

I am a novice to Opera I found that I have this in my cd player more often than not, and love Robert Guarino's amazing tenor voice.. A+

      5 out of 5 stars Donaudy a rare find.......2002-01-22

Virtually nothing is known about this Sicilian composer who was a contemporary of Mascagni and Puccini and shares in the sort of verismo passion of both. We do know that Toscanini championned his song writing and Caruso sang his music on his recitals, as have Domingo and Corelli and Carreras. No surprise, as they are gorgeous tunes and oh so romantic.
Another fine surprise is the wonderful American tenor Robert Guarino, who clearly has a connection to this music either through his own ethnic heritage or much work on the style and songs themselves--or both. Except for a little limitation at the very top of the range, this is lush, fully committed and suave singing of just the sort one enjoys with a cognac and roaring fire in January. Once again, Newport Classic shows its penchant for unearthing the best in the out of reach and unexpected places on the musical map. Guarino is partnered by a superb pianist and the sound of the album is warm and inviting. Buy it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Good "Elixir of Love" with Bergonzi at his blazing best.......2006-11-21

SOURCE: Live 1967 performance from the May Festival in Florence.

SOUND: Overall the sound is generally satisfactory. No-one will confuse it with a digital studio recording or even a live recording from Bayreuth, but not bad at all for a live performance. Stage noises are minimal and the audience is better behaved than many Italian audiences.

CAST: Adina, a prosperous country landowner inclined to be flirtatious and flighty - Renata Scotto (soprano); Nemorino, country bumpkin and prize chump hopelessly in love with Adina - Carlo Bergonzi (tenor); Belcore, a sergeant in a regiment encamped near Adina's farm, hopelessly in love with Belcore but also inclined to marry Adina - Giuseppe Taddei (baritone); Doctor Dulcamara, a traveling quack, purveyor of bogus nostrums and love potions, in love with money and his next meal - Carlo Cava (bass-baritone); Gianetta, a country girl who is not entirely averse to snagging a wealthy husband - Renza Jotti (mezzo-soprano). CONDUCTOR: Gianandrea Gavazzeni with the Florence May Festival Orchestra and Chorus.

DOCUMENTATION: No libretto. Brief history of the opera and short summary of the plot. Track list which identifies some but by no means all the singers on each track, and omits timings. Nothing on the performers and little more on the circumstances of this recording.

TEXT: This recording includes the performance cuts that were traditional for more than a century. Some earlier reviewers are clearly appalled by that fact and are quite evidently suffering the vapors because of it. I do not adhere to the cult of recording every note ever written and re-affirming every preliminary draft and bad idea. The simple fact is that original intentions sometimes do not survive encounters with real audiences. Opera is theater at its very largest and not every academic restorer understands that. If you have any doubts on the matter, just consider the cataclysmic effect on "The Tales of Hoffmann" when "restored" to Wagnerian length, as it is on some recent recordings.

COMMENTARY: "L'elisir d'amore" is yet another opera that can be traced back to that ubiquitous hack of all seasons, Eugene Scribe. Scribe's original libretto, "Le philtre," had been set to music by Auber in 1831, to no particular effect. In 1832, Donizetti needed a libretto on fairly short notice. His hack librettist, Felice Romani, knew a good thing when he could steal it. "Le philtre" was quickly paraphrased into Italian doggerel as "L'elisir d'amore" Donizetti devoted a long time--a full month!--to setting it. "L'elisir d'amore" opened to triumph in Milan in May 1832. One hundred and thirty five years later, the Florence May Festival offered this fine performance.

There are three international stars among the singers, but the performance really belongs to Carlo Bergonzi. The always acute and knowledgeable Amazon reviewer Armindo was so impressed that he was moved to utter these exclamations: "Bergonzi is the most characterful and romantic Nemorino ever! It's really unbelievable how much feeling and spirit he infuses in his singing without ever reducing its musical quality! I know no other singer--male or female--who ever achieved such level of musicality. He truly sounds like the young bumpkin! The most idiomatic and tender Una furtiva lagrima you will ever hear, is only one highlight of his performance." I am not quite as bowled over as Armindo. I think Ferruccio Tagliavini might have been as good or better about 1948 and so, too, might Tito Schipa have been around 1930 and maybe even Alessandro Bonci in, say 1910. But, of course, Tagliavini, Schipa and Bonci are not available in their best voices on (more or less) complete recordings of "L'elisir" while Bergonzi is-right here! He is as good as we're ever likely to hear in this lifetime.

Renata Scotto sings very well here. Her many fans may rest assured that Scotto does everything that they might wish from her and does it very impressively, too. I am not one of her fans and the fault is probably much more mine than hers. To me, she is like one of T. S. Elliot's mermaids. I hear them singing each to each but I do not think they will sing to me.

The third big name in the cast is Giuseppe Taddei. The Italians like to say they gave Gobbi to the world but kept Taddei for themselves. He did, in fact, sing outside Italy. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera at the age of 67. On this recording, the 51 year-old baritone offers a good, solid performance as Sergeant Belcore. I have no criticism of him in the role of Belcore except that he should not be singing it. Taddei was an excellent Leporello and a tremendous Falstaff. If I had been the producer of the May Festival I would have moved heaven and earth to have him sing Doctor Dulcamara. Any good baritone can be Belcore. Taddei would have been fabulous as the quack doctor and perhaps only Salvatore Baccaloni at his prime might have been better. I can only guess that Taddei took Belcore because he did not wish to be typecast in the buffo parts.

Carlo Cava was a reliable singer of lower-voiced parts. His recording career, to the best of my admittedly limited knowledge, was pretty much confined to short supporting parts. I'd not be at all surprised if this Dulcamara is his most significant appearance on disk. Cava is all right as the snake oil-peddling quack. He's looser than some in the role, but still generally staid in a part that practically cries out for a larger-than-life buffo baritone who delights in chewing the scenery and anything else that comes to hand.

Gianetta is a relatively small part which, nevertheless, offers some nice bits. Renza Jotti is an admirable Gianetta.

Gavazzeni conducts a fairly rapid-moving, Italianate performance in which everything keeps moving forward, unlike, say, Richard Bonynge who distorts the overall shape of the opera for the benefit of his singers. The orchestra and chorus are fine.

This is a good performance with a blazing tenor in a barebones package, all at low price. I think it's worth five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great recording, but it's now available on video.......2006-02-08

This 1967 performance from Florence is a wonderful recording, with Carlo Bergonzi, Renata Scotto, and Giuseppe Taddei all at their very best. Bergonzi has some pitch problems, but overall he sings with great beauty and musicianship. However ... this performance is now available on video, on the label Hardy Classics. The video is somewhat expensive, but it's worth it, as Carlo Bergonzi on the video is an endearingly naive country boy. Renata Scotto despite not having a conventionally beautiful face convinces us that she's the town flirt through her excellent acting. The sets are simple and the film is B&W, but as I said, I think if you liked this performance on cd, the DVD is worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars Sparkling and romantic as the Elixir of Love must be!.......2004-06-15

This is one of the greatest Florence May Festival performances and should be in every opera collection. The experienced Gavazzeni, a maestro of the traditional Italian school of conducting, leads a superb cast and creates an amusing yet warm Elisir.

Bergonzi is the most characterful and romantic Nemorino ever! It's really unbelievable how much feeling and spirit he infuses in his singing without ever reducing its musical quality! I know no other singer - male or female - who ever achieved such level of musicality. He truly sounds like the young bumpkin! The most idiomatic and tender Una furtiva lagrima you will ever hear, is only one highlight of his performance.

Equally inspired is Renata Scotto's Adina and though I have never warmed up to her slightly metallic sound, I recognise her greatness. You won't find a more capricious Adina! Scotto moreover has all the abilities to shine and excite in the coloratura parts. Her big aria is a showstopper! Taddei's strong and suave Belcore is one of the best on records while Cava's funny Duclamara gets better and better as the show goes on. Even Giannetta is wonderfully performed by Renza Jotti.

It's not only the individual performances that are perfect but there is so much chemistry between the artists in the duets, the recitatives and ensembles. This is what truly makes this Elisir stand out as the best ever! A definite, intoxicating recommendation!

5 out of 5 stars Bergonzi is great.......2001-08-27

What a wonderful live performance of this opera. Bergonzi is great as Nemorino. I can't recall ever hearing a more impassioned rendition of "una furtiva lagrima". Bergonzi is just perfect in this role. Scotto is no slouch either. If you like this opera, you should not be without the CD. The price is a steal. Buy it and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Scotto and Bergonzi=Heaven.......2001-04-03

First of all, the sound quality of this recording is very acceptable and you could do far worse with some digital versions (Pavarotti/Battle or Carreras/Ricciarelli). As for the performance itself, well, it's vintage Italian singing. The important thing about this recording is that neither Carlo Bergonzi nor Renata Scotto recorded this opera commercially, so for their performances alone this set is priceless. Bergonzi sings a youthful, passionate Nemorino surpassed on records only by Giuseppe Di Stefano. Renata Scotto invariably gives a masterclass on true belcanto style, no other soprano of her generation was a better Adina, so we are very grateful indeed for this recording. If you want a digital version I can only recommend the Alagna/Devia version on ERATO.
