Songs you'll remember........2007-02-14
When you hear the songs of Carlos Guastavino, you'll ask yourself why they are so rarely heard on classical radio stations in North America. They have that quality of inevitability that makes a song work the first time you hear it. They also have a melodic grace that makes you want to hear them again.
My thanks to WNYC in New York for introducing me to them!
One of the Best of 2006 ... A Classic.......2006-12-28
As represented by this disk, the Argentinean art song is a genre as evocative and distinctive as the great American songbook or the French cabaret tradition. It shares with other Spanish song forms a strong rhythmic element, arising from popular roots; but it has a flavor all its own. An air of mystery and melancholy infuses many of the songs. The liner notes describe Argentinean art song as born of the effort to establish a unique and refined national voice. From the evidence of this carefully chosen program, the goal was achieved with glorious success. We have here a range of sentiments and styles to rival the French melodie.
The program strikes an ideal balance -- presenting a variety of composers, with enough songs by each to give a sense of his musical personality. There was nary a song on the disk that didn't win me over with its originality, its piquant lyrics, and its stylish performance. The very first song, Encantamiento, radiantly depicts the transfiguration of motherhood. The six songs by Buchardo are perfect miniatures, using a few brush strokes to capture the scene while investing it with mystery. The three songs by Astor Piazzolla are the most urbane, but decidedly derivative: the first is a schmaltzy anthem; the other two are tangos that give a new twist on sinister "Mack the Knife" types. The five songs by Guastavino that end the recital have a Brahmsian flavor that never falls into mimicry.
The solo performances are interspersed with beautiful duets -- these are often settings of verses suited for a single narrator but sung by two voices, which offers an interesting amplification of sentiment.
On an earlier recording of Spanish repertory by Bernarda Fink, I found her lacking in native flair. I have no such complaint here: the performances are assertive but nuanced, full of atmosphere and rhythmic grace. Bernarda Fink's brother, baritone-bass Marcos Fink, shares this recital. His fine voice is vigorous but sensitive; there is no question of the listener biding time between Bernarda's solos. The commitment, affection, and talent of the musical team, accompanist included, will make this recording one of my perennial favorites. It certainly ranks among my five favorite disks devoted to Spanish art song.
Harmonia mundi is much to be commended for supporting this project. The material is out-of-the-way, but not because it deserves to be! Add this classic to your collection and make a wonderful discovery!

This CD will make you wonder........2006-02-16
Tenor Ulises Espaillat and pianist Pablo Zinger sound as though they have lived with this music for awhile. They respond to every nuance of Guastavino's settings, and the performances are caught in wonderfully natural sound.
If you don't speak Spanish, the enclosed booklet's English translations will allow you to follow along with the Spanish lyrics, and, if you're learning Spanish, this recording will help you along while opening a window onto Latin American culture. If you're a Spanish speaker, que suerte!
This recording is a great reminder that there are still many byways of classical music waiting to be discovered.
Simply outstanding.......2001-11-09
If Spanish is not your first language,
for the first time you will probably wish
it was. The songs recorded here are romantic,
emotional and nostalgic. Tenor Ulises Espaillat
sings with sentiment and emotion, and pianist
Pablo Zinger plays the piano outstanding. This
recording is so good and leaves me with very little
to say.

Customer Reviews:
Where has Marta Felcman been hiding!?.......2004-11-30
The program begins with two delightful contrapuntal works by Domenico Scarlatti. Miss Felcman plays these works with verve and remarkable clarity. She makes a strong case for those who choose to play baroque music on modern pianos. In context, the performer is bringing the listener into a deeper level of listening which will be fully explored in the Bach/Busoni transcription of the D minor Chaconne (after BWV 1004) which follows. It is in this very architectural work that Marta Felcman won my heart. She most definitely understands this work on the deepest level and knows just how to communicate what she sees and hears in the work through her almost hypnotic use of rhythmic tension and nuance as expressive devices. For this listener, this single performance would make the album worth twice the price.
Three works from her Argentinean countryman Carlos Guastavino disclose the lyricism, passion and earthy qualities that are so much a part of their native folk melodies.
For those who love the "Kreisleriana" of Schumann, this album is a must. Marta Felcman here presents the entire suite, served up with great good taste, and the right blend of elan, whimsy and devilish panache. This is a mature interpretation that belongs in place next to the recorded performances of Horowitz, Rubenstein, Ashkenazy, Pariah and company.
Concluding the album is the performance of Ned Rorem's Piano Sonata No. 2, which the composer has endorsed in print elsewhere. Contemporary composers owe a huge debt of gratutude to performers who put their technique and musicianship at their disposal. As a conclusion to this listening experience, the Rorem comes across as an unpretentious, charming blend of intellectual play and all-American lyricism.
This is a terrific album which can make a great gift. Let us hope that it is just the first of many releases by this very gifted and mature performer. The album name states the situation very simply and truly: Marta Felcman Plays!
