Following the success of 1999's thrilling Armide, Marc Minkowski and his excellent cast fully convey the power and drama of Gluck's masterpiece. They pull you into the story (based on a play by Euripides) through the emotional truth of their interpretation. The opening quiet strings create an air of mystery dispelled by a ferocious storm magnificently conveyed by these early-music specialists. Within a few phrases of Iphigénie's opening lament, Delunsch creates a believable, sympathetic character. Keenlyside as Oreste and Beuron as his sidekick, Pylade, pack a ton of emotion into their singing, too. Minkowski takes chances, going for the emotional jugular in ways that some may find excessive. But the stakes involved for these characters are of the life-and-death variety, and this recording gets that across as no other does. A more contained version by Martin Pearlman's Boston Baroque on Telarc, boasting another outstanding Iphigénie in Christine Goerke, will appeal to those who find Minkowski overly forceful. Let's get a few things straight, alright?
Christoph Willibald Ritter von Gluck couldn't write counterpoint if his life depended upon it. Yes, Handel was right about that. Herr Gluck's orchestrations are imaginative and colourful, but he was hardly an idiomatic writer of music for the instruments he chose. One could easily imagine him banging out tunes on his harpsichord over a few glasses of wine with his wife, Marianne, after dinner.

Yet Gluck is a great composer.

Why?

Well, he wrote stuff like this. That's why. Why is Iphigénie en Tauride a masterpiece (I am sure it is)? Well, I think it is because of Gluck's sense of theatre and pace, word painting, harmony and melody. Gluck's music is simple and heartfelt music writ large and beautifully and effectively writ large. Gluck knew what he was doing even when he was simply covering up his weaknesses.

This recording of Iphigénie en Tauride is, in a simple word, perfect. I bought this recording and I am profoundly satisfied with it. I will buy other recordings and DVDs of this work, but I am confident that none will ever surpass this this recording.

Listen to "Ô malheureuse Iphigénie!" sung with incredible feeling and style by Mireille Delunsch and I am sure you will be sold. In this aria, constructed very simply, with off-the-beat strings and plaintive oboe solo, one can hear Iphigénie's misery upon learning of her family's death - she gets closer and closer to a nervous breakdown as the aria progresses.

Gluck wasn't a technically great composer, but he understood human psychology and how to make it manifest in his music.

the ultimate recording.......2001-05-14

Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre have done it again : there are few baroque ensembles who are able to bring so much life in a recording. Thanks to outstanding singing, playing and directing, this recording of Gluck's masterpiece (his best opera if you ask me !) is truly a theatre experience. This is much better than anything recorded before : the Muti/Scala Sony recording with Vaness was always a bit too "exotic", and the Boston Baroque for Pearlmann (with Goerke) are too boring for words. The Gardiner version (with modern instruments) on Philips was the only recommandable version so far, but Diana Montaigue is no match for Delunsch. What is more, the cast is outstanding. The soloists all have a perfect command of the language (Keenlyside, the only non-native speaker of the cast, included), and, what is more, a perfect understanding the verses they declaim : finally a recording that will not make French ears cringe. Naouri's bass, somewhat lacking in colour, might not be my favourite but is very suitable as the barbaric king Thoas. Beuron's Pylade is generous and moving. Keenlyside's portrayal of the tortured Oreste is breathtaking throughout : there is so much suffering in the voice. Delunsch, whom I found slightly distant in the concert hall, here just blows away any reservations I might have had : her Iphigénie is of classical grandeur and her singing superb... Listen to her big 2nd act aria with choir, the famous "O malheureuse Iphigénie..." and you will be sold ! If you are not moved, this is just not the work for you !

I found this cd in a music store in manhattan but never saw it in a nother store again. It is a fantastic eurodance cd. She has a lot of European hits on this cd. At least five singles. In the US she released Number One and Uh La La La as singles. I think they were played in a few stations like Miami but never really took off. It really is a shame casue her songs really had the potentioal to be classics her ein the US> Anyway if you like Eurodance from the 1990s then buy this cd without a doubt.

Alexia has probably the best vocals in europop besides Vanessa van Hemmert from $-Steings. Alexia's style is different than the style of 4-Strings as she does classic Hi-NRG Eurodance meanwhile 4-Strings does more trancey dance.

The best songs are "Virtual Reality.", "Summer is Crazy.", and "Number One." but the others are good too. I suggest this to anyone that likes dance music with female vocals.

Alexia should be more popular in North America than she is. This is a savvy mix of Hi-NRG, some with a Euro-Dance flavour. None of the tracks disappoint, they all would be rocking in your CD player, home, car, party, or nightclub. Get "Fun Club" now, you won't regret it! I also recommend Samantha Fox-21st. Definately there's one singer in all the cd that stands out and it is the famous MaRIAH CAREY who is for sure the best english singer ever and with this single in spanish she is so much better Te estoy pensando.... My all The rest of the singers reallyu [stink] and for last I cant believe you dare to compare the amazing voicce of La Mariah to the [stinky] voice of Simpson.

Funky italian pop songs done with style.......2005-07-02

Alexia used to sing some lovely Euro-dance songs in the early 90s. I loved her sound then, yet she didn't stay static. I think we were all curious to hear her sing in Italian as well, since she often talked about her town (La Spezia) and how her surroundings in Italy affected her music, so after her "Mad for music" CD, where her sound was also beginning to change into more funk/pop rather than euro-dance, Alexia has turned around and started singing fresh pop songs in Italian.

Surprisingly enough, eventhough i don't understand a word of italian, i absolutely still love her powerful sunny voice end enjoy the energy and passion that she has and conveys singing all these songs. A true artist always evolves.

This album is a great collection of some of her greatest hits from her italian language cds. If you haven't bought those albums yet, then this is your next best bet.

She truly has an amazing voice, she can be loud and clear and VERY funky (like her song "Dimmi Comme" or "Una Donna Sola" which bring to mind fun 70's Funk songs), she can get a bit RnB like her "Egoista" song or she can whip up a wonderful piano power-ballad like "Per dire di no" (which she sang at the San Remo music festival and rightfully got the first prize) or "Come tu mi vuoi" with a nice pop/gospel like sound in parts. She truly has a varied range of sounds and songs. Don't expect rocket science here, just pure well sung and executed pop music sung in Italian with a funky edge at times.

World pop music doesn't get better than this. Let the emotion and energy and good vibes of the songs carry you away even if you don't speak or understand the language (plus the extra 3 english language songs are nice additions).

It's refreshing to hear a great voice from an unpretentious singer in world pop music, at a time that we are bombarded with snobby mindless pop divas that can hardly sing yet due to promotion and controversial dance routines they get all the attention. I hope we get to hear more from Alexia, and i hope she keeps up her hard work and keeps giving us great songs both in english and in her native italian.

It would be nice if the people from amazon put some audio samples here so that people could sample a bit of what the songs sound like (at this moment of my review they had no samples yet).

Alexia is Italy's Hidden Gem!.......2005-07-02

If you're living in the U.S., chances are you haven't heard of Alexia. At least, not unless you have been searching for her music since she began singing in Italian. That's how my passion for her music began. Alexia began her solo career by singing high-energy euro-pop music. When she evolved to r&b Italian-style like no one else could, it was the perfect way for her to exhibit her vocal talents which are showcased in this compilation. "Da Grande" spans her 3 Italian releases with 2 new tracks ("Da Grande" is not listed as a track on amazon but, rest assured, it is the first track on the cd). All of these songs are heartfelt and powerfully delivered by Alexia. "Quello Che Sento" is a stand-out. It puzzles me as to why it was not chosen as a single from "Gli Occhi Grandi Della Luna". For bonus tracks we are offered 2 English-renditions of 2 of the songs that appear in Italian as well as "Money Honey", possibly Alexia's best, most-energized dance track!

This collection is perfect!

This CD single is really good. Even though I heard this song so many times, it still makes me wanna sing the lyrics. "Uh La La La" is getting air time on radio stations now, which will get more people to know the lovely Alexia. This is a good song for all hardcore ALEXIA fans, like me, but her other Eurodance songs are much better. The remixes are great, especially the 'Almighty Radio' and 'Beach Mix'.
