Customer Reviews:
Pagode from Bahia.......2005-07-04
Terra Samba's pagode has a festive and caribbean feel. Besides the use of the cavaquinho (ukulele like instrument) and percussions, tun tun (bass drum), pandeiro (tambourine), and repinique (timbale sounding) the band also uses horns, and some synthesizers (but not overly done), which is more frequent in the pagode from Bahia compared to pagode in other parts of Brazil. Terra Samba's music is not jazzed up with electronic or studio technique to the same extent as É O Tchan (the most famous of the pagode groups from Bahia), which tends to have a more `dancehall' feel in their pagode. This gives Terra Samba's pagode a purer form. Pagode is a type of samba, scaled down from the big carnival sambas, that is performed at house parties and restaurants.
The CD `Xi do Terra Samba' is overall pagode-axe that mixes Forró (an accordian style music that can somewhat be compared to zedyco), carnival, and reggae rhythms. The song `Boneco Diodo' has traces of forró rhythms that makes it a lively dance tune (well, all the songs are danceable). `Coisas Do Amor' and `Livro Aberto' are slow that tend to have a pagode feel from Rio.
Reboleio is pagode mixed with reggae dance-hall. This song would make and probably is a good single for this CD. There is also a Spanish verision on the CD. It is a very catchy tune that would make a good line up for dancing at any party. The rhythms on Beija Beija (kiss kiss) are definitely lambada. A fast pace song that is exciting to listen to, as it is to dance to. Xi do Terra the title song is a midtempo groove with a nice tune to go with it. Bye bye, Chuva de Prata, Moda de Viola, Tacha-Tchuru are songs that fill up the CD but are fun to listen to nonetheless.
Xi do Terra is Terra Samba's 6th. As with their previous CDs, the group continues with their `Terra Samba' style. For the most part, I would rather have a group not departure from their formula or style. Which is why I give Xi do Terra a four star rating. There are only a couple of songs I felt that really stood out (beija beija, and Xi do Terra). Which is why it is not a five star rating. If you enjoyed their previous CDs then you should enjoy this one as well. I think Terra Samba sets some standards for pagode-axé. Check out their live album Ao Vivo E A Cores, a great live album.
