3 out of 5 stars Too much music, not enough song.......2007-06-25

Hava Nagila was about the only good song on this CD in my opinion. Most of the tracks are music tracks that sound very much like the one before it. I guess that's okay if that is what you were looking for, but I was hoping for more songs with words. I played it once and tossed it in a storage box (my garage sale box).

5 out of 5 stars Great music!.......2005-04-08

My mom played this for me a few years ago, and I listened to it a lot until I lost the disc. Finally I found it again, heh heh. Anyway, I really love this CD. The songs are all really pretty, and it all sounds really natural. I mean, they don't have weird synthesized stuff or anything, haha. It almost reminds me of the first pioneers in Israel. ^^ Buy this CD! I heart it.

5 out of 5 stars Savall family extravaganza.......2006-01-27

Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras are the two giants in the Catalan early music scene. On this album they enlist the help of percussionist Pedro Estevan and their two children to produce some truly exceptional music. Jordi Savall, the most famous family member, almost fades into the background, although he is obviously the rock that anchors the album. His playing is superb, and it seems as though it was most likely him who chose the excellent repertoire. Figueras, like wine, is only improving with age. Also like wine, however, she's a bit of an acquired taste; I am a huge fan of straight tone singing and even I took a while to get used to her bizarre, raw sound. It's worth it, however, as she is one of the most intriguing singers of this era.

Daughter Arianna is a world-class artist in her own right. Like her father, she is multi-talented; she sings, plays the harp, and composes (her contribution to this album, "La Salve," is beautiful and affecting, but some of the selections on her own solo album "Bella Terra" are far superior). Like her mother, her voice is haunting and beautiful, more polished than the elder woman but slightly less interesting. She sounds particularly lovely in the background of the first track. Ferran Savall also lends his voice to the album, although his singing is far less classical sounding, which may be a plus to some listeners. "Noumi, Noumi, Yaladatii," which Figueras has previously recorded as a solo, includes a vocalise from Ferran astonishing in its power, although his one solo on this album, "La Canco Del Lladre," is the least impressive track, as his voice can be irritating after a while and the song itself is repetitive and overlong.

The instrumental tracks are universally excellent. Jordi Savall is one of the world's best viola da gamba players and this album proves that he is still at the top of his game. Arianna's virtuosic harp solo is one of the album's highlights; her playing is less restrained and more visceral than most harpists. Pedro Estevan seems to have very little to do, but a little goes a long way with this music.

I sincerely hope that this will not be the last album to feature the Savall-Figueras family together. These five musicians have produced an album of surreal beauty, not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Comment on "Gemçis Güzel Günerli" and more.......2005-05-01

First off, this is the best Savina Yannatou CD I've heard to date -- her voice is in terrific form here. (Though you'll get to hear a lot more of the band on her latest release, Sumiglia.)

Second, track 11 ("Gemçis Güzel Günerli") *is* a Turkish song, written by an Aremenian citizen of Turkey, Hrant Kenkulian, or "Udi Hrant," as he's often known -- this is mentioned in the liner notes to Mediterranea. ("Udi" is an honorific prefix meaning that he was a master player of the ud, a Middle Eastern lute.) If you're interested in exploring his music further, there are several recordings of his work (voice, ud, and violin) on the Traditional Crossroads label. (Type "Udi Hrant" into the search engine on this site and you'll find the CDs very easily.)

Turkey was -- and still is -- an ethnically mixed country, which is a legacy of the Ottoman Empire. There were Armenian Turkish composers and musicians at the courts of the Ottoman sultans, and there were those who also excelled at light classical and popular song. Hrant Kenkulian was a master of classical and popular music -- if you explore further, you'll find out that he's one of many 20th-century Armenians who were involved in the development of Turkish music.

Yannatou is an inheritor of Turkish tradition, too. Modern Greece was occupied by the Ottomans for many centuries, and there is a very strong Turkish tinge to much of the Greek music she performs. (And vice versa, as she performs Pontic Greek music from the Black Sea coast of Turkey; also songs from Smyrna -- now called Izmir -- on Turkey's western coast.)

What I love most about her work is her peerless way with all of the songs she chooses. Many people have tried to come up with pan-Mediterranean discs, but Yannatou is one of a handful of people who has succeeded at it.

5 out of 5 stars Gecmis Guzel Gunleri is actually Armenian.......2004-09-22

My professional background is in ethnomusicology. I am not Greek, Turkish or Armenia so I have no axe to grind. One reviewer below, apparently of Turkish background, seems to take offense that Gecmis Guzel Gunleri is not listed as "Turkish Traditional." there is a simple reason for that, it isn't orignially a Turkish song. It is a well known Armenian song, with the same melody for hundred of years. Indeed this rendition is in Turkish, but to call it "Turkish traditional" would be innacurate.

Inded it belongs to, adn illustrates, a whole body of non Turkish music from Turkey which actually speaks to the ethnic cleansing that occured the in the 1900-1920's period.

Few people in today's Turkey, which has been purged of knowledge of the roots of its own tradional music, are aware of the multiethnic roots of its music. It was for years criminal to even suggest that many songs were orignially Greek, Kurdish or Armenian.

So I am glad that my Turkish friend likes the Armenian ballad Gecmis Guzel Gunleri ("The Beautiful Past Days") and am only sorry that he never heard the original recordings by an long dead artist now know in Turkey as Udi Hrant, but whose non stage name was Udi Hrant Kenkulian. His family was murdered in the Turkish Genocide against the Armenians, which makes his song more ever poignant - as the title suggests..

5 out of 5 stars The Meditarranean Soul Captured in One CD!.......2002-04-02

Savina Yannatou has an indescribable soprano voice which captures the sounds and emotions of the Meditarranean people whether Italian, Greek, French (Corsica), Hebrew or Turkish (I may have missed a country or two present on the CD). The wedding song from the Greek island of Kalymnos and the Turkish "aman" song are my favorites. All the songs are so beautifully sung, it is hard to say that one is better than another ... I have heard these two songs before and am familiar with how they should sound: her singing is traditonal with a tenderness and sincerity that is a uniquely her own. Savina's voice is ethereal and "other worldly" - totally living up to her name, after a saint from the Meditarranean, Italy, I think.

I first heard Savina Yannatou on Mondo Greece and knew I must have one of her CDs. I discovered this one and was compelled to buy it. It is filled with the music of Primavera de Salonika, playing kanun, santouri, lyra, and other authentic intstruments that complement Savina's voice. Her voice is beyond description ... totally captivating, exceptional, without comparison. Listen and be amazed - then buy the CD!!! Erika Borsos (erikab93)

4 out of 5 stars Postcards from various locations.......2007-04-16

David Broza first came to my attention several years ago via his touring with Sting. I kept hearing raves about this singer that I had never heard before, and eventually found a copy of Broza's "Time Of Trains." I was mesmerized by this clearly talented man, who could pick a guitar like nobody's business and had such a beautifully husky voice. There were a few songs on that CD that have stayed with me, especially the title track, "Somebody Make Me Laugh" and "Blood For Blood."

Sadly, that CD did not bring about the American success it was aiming for. Around the world, however, Broza's mix of Hebrew, Spanish and English lyrics with a mix of musical styles has won him a steady audience for almost 30 years. "Painted Postcards" is his latest attempt at finding new listeners in America, combining songs from his albums "Second Street," "Time of Trains" "David Broza" and "Stone Doors." While each of these albums is a fine recording in its own light, they have often been released in America on smaller or labels now gone defunct.

Broza picked some of his favorite songs from both his English and Hebrew catalogs for this 2002 release on Rounder. While Broza writes most of the music himself, he searches for poets and lyricists the world over to either match his spirited music or to translate into Hebrew. If you're a fan of the Gypsy Kings, "It Is You" will warm your cold feet. His association with Sting seems to have influenced "If You Don't Kiss Me." Dire Straits and Eric Clapton are conjured up during "When I Didn't Have a Home." And personally, I have loved "Time Of Trains" since I first heard it in 1993. Broza's multi-cultural music is of a flavor that I wish more could get a taste of and, having been lucky enough to see him perform, experience first hand. "Painted Postcards" will help you take that first sampling.

4 out of 5 stars First time buyer.......2003-03-07

Having never heard David Broza before, I am totally enthralled with this CD. The mix of hebrew and spainish influence creates an exotic combination. I think the guitar work is exceptional.

    1 out of 5 stars Nothing New.......2002-09-06

Disappointing. We were hoping for some new material from this fine artist. All he's done is signed on to a new label and re-issued songs, mostly off Stone Doors and the self titled David Broza, which we already have. Better to buy those two CDs because there are several great songs that couldn't be crammed on to one "best of" CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Colourful Masterpiece!.......2005-12-01

Yair Dalal exemplifies a rare mixture between conflicting trends in music: traditional versus modern, Eastern versus Western and Jewish versus Arabic. He also explores musical traditions of different countries like Iraq, Turkey and India, besides Jewish traditional music. Most of the pieces presented here are of charming beauty and very colourful and great instrumental arrangement.

Although Dalal is not as skillful in playing the violin as in musical composition, his taqsims on the Middle Eastern violin are very haunting. The Al Ol ensemble membres are very skillful players. The recording quality is not perfect, but it is not "bad" - as the previous reviewer sais - either.

I highly recommend this CD for anyone interested in Middle Eastern/Eastern music.

Hi I liked the artists music, but the problem is with the recording quality. Except for the first track the remaining track were unclear.

5 out of 5 stars Trance Ararat ...........2000-11-22

Unlike his first CD's , Silan is not a solo one , with the backup of Al Ol Ensemble (great sound) , Dalal is getting closer to the western eastern oriented music lovers . This rainbow coloured train (you may call it Trance Ararat or Orient ..), takes you all the way from Israel to Turkey , Iran , India and some other exotic places . Each tune takes you to another place , so relax , don't forget your nargila and cup of strong black coffee , the pleasure is all yours .

5 out of 5 stars mesmerizing middle eastern sounds.......1999-08-23

I bought this CD a few weeks ago and have listened to its breathtaking dream-like Israeli/Arabic sounds of peace at least 20-30 times already. I am not of eastern heritage, a musician, nor versed in eastern music, and am enjoying this CD tremendously. It is somehow modern and ancient simultaneously, almost a brief anthology of eastern sounds. The instrumentation is delicate and powerful. If you're new to middle eastern music like I am, you'll hear familiar sounds, but not songs. Also if you like Indian music, I think you will appreciate this album as it seems to have an Indian flavor as well. Somehow Dalal and the Al Ol Ensemble have managed to give the music both an exotic, timeless quality while at the same time making it approachable to the foreign western ear. I don't know how they've done it, but I am now looking for more.

With Amazing Grace, the Vienna Choir Boys have released an interesting collection tending down a path different from that of their usual repertoire. The legendary institution--with members regularly chosen by some of the greatest conductors for boy-choir parts in music by Mozart, Bach, and Mahler, as well as Bernstein--was founded half a millennium ago, and a number of famous musicians have been alumni of this almost peerless ensemble through the centuries.

Here, they sing a marketable soup of international songs and traditional folk melodies from around the world. Typical of the songs on this disc is the Japanese tune "Sakura," which blends a popular oriental melody with Western harmony and culturally idiomatic-sounding instruments. Another particularly gripping work is an arrangement of the liturgical Hebrew folk song "Hevenu Shalom Aleichem." Traditionally, this piece is sung on the Sabbath, but the energetic version here is more suited to a grand festival (one can easily imagine the accelerando dance refrain repeating to a frenzy during a bar mitzvah or a Jewish wedding celebration). The varied program demonstrates the VCB's relatively recent expansion into world music--not to mention a broader audience (they have also recorded soundtracks for such films as Primal Fear)--which might raise red flags for the purist. But with the VCB--under financial pressure (like so many other nonprofit concert ensembles today) and seeking a more popular audience by expanding their repertoire--there is nothing to forgive. This beautiful, shameless, sometimes fun, even on occasion thought-provoking collection benefits from the ensemble's impeccable standards. --W.T. Arnold

          Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars waste of beautiful voices.......2005-12-12

The arrangements for the songs are terrible, sounds like pre-programmed songs from keyboard and actually you can barely hear the boys singing. it would be a waste of money to buy this CD when the Vienna Boys have others much better. Watch out: a terrible choice for a gift.

          1 out of 5 stars a brave failure.......2002-01-01

The concept of this CD seems to aim for a broader audience than the classical listeners used to the VBC performing Strauss, Mozart etc. This attempt at an easy listening collection of folk and folk-like songs seems swamped by the "backing tracks". There is little room for subtlety, rubato or, indeed, artistry in this recording. The end result seems to be mechanical music making performed by those more accustomed to a different idiom.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-04-23

This CD of Vienna Choir Boys is excellent. In this unusual repertory, these boys are perfect. I think, this CD ought to be discovered by all lovers of choir boy's music.

          5 out of 5 stars fabulous.......2001-02-25

I have 53 recordings of The Vienna Choir Boys and this one ranks up there as one of the best. I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars And the beauty goes on and on !.......2001-02-10

Once again The "Sailor Suited Lads" from Austria have not let down the millions of fans that attend there concerts world wide. They, with this CD,demonstrate what it takes to withstand the test-of-time.All of the songs are sung to the perfection one now expects, and always receives, when listening to this choir. The title song is my personal favorite."Amazing Grace" is and always has been my favorite hymn. The choirs rendition is acompanied by a hauntingly beautiful Tin Whistle that adds that old European flavor that just puts it over the edge. To all Fans present and future this CD is one that will be a treasured addition to your music library. Enjoy
