If you want to know how latin music lovers partied in the 1960's, this is the CD to have. All the greats are on this like Joe Cuba, Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Willie Bobo, Willie Rosario and more.

"Picadillo" by the legends Eddie Palmieri and Cal Tjader stills blows everybody away. The song is hardcore latin jazz at its best. If you love to cha cha, you'll go crazy for "Undress My Mind" by Ocho, and "Fried Neckbones and Home Fries" by Willie Bobo. Plenty of Mambo, Salsa, Boogaloo, Cha Cha Cha on this one. If you like to dance play this whole CD at your next party, your guests, young or old, will spin the night away!

"Must Have" for fans of Latin Jazz.......2000-07-23

The ultimate test is that I never get tired of listening to this one. Just listen to the first song cranked up; "Fried Neck Bones and Some Home Fries." It's one of those tunes with some much atmosphere and spirit that you can't get it out of your head. The entire CD is a collection of similar great stuff. If you are getting started with Lating Jazz and want to know what it is all about, this is the perfect place to start. If you know all about Latin Jazz, you will hear new angles on this one. Buy it. Crank it. Play it!

The only honest comment I could make would be: "when is the next volume coming out?" A great collection of sensual, foot-tapping, hip swinging latino groove that can only open eyes to the hidden resources of great latino music not currently within the marketing scheme of major latin labels. Buy it only if you like to stay up late and have fun.

Yet another Palmieri essential........2003-08-02

Because he has recorded so many great albums, it's an extemely daunting task to pick out just one Eddie Palmieri CD over all the others. This one includes "Bomba De Corazon", "Verdad Amarga" and "Descarga Palmieri" and based on these masterpieces is well worth having. If I were to pick out one "starter" album for anyone being introduced to El Maestro Palmieri for the first time, this one would be it.

Classical New York Salsa.......2002-04-20

A "must have" for any decent salsa collection. Conjures up memories of Friday nights at the Palladium when I had the privilege of attending as the king of the Bronx held court, back in the days of DJ's Dick Ricardo Sugar and the great Symphony Sid. Yet the music is timeless, the standard as superlative now as it was then. Puente is better known nationally and internationally, but Palmieri is an incomparable master in his own right. These recordings by the unique Orquesta La Perfecta--"the sound of the two trombones"--and its trademark vocalist, Ismael Quintana, compare very favorably to the current crop of Latin Jazz compositions on the one hand, or, on the other, to the latter day Cuban Buenavista Social Club revivalists. Old yet amazingly current.

Essential Listening.......2000-09-13

This band inspired everyone who either played, danced, or listened to salsa music. Everything they recorded is worth owning. This is one of the best of the lot.

This fifth collection of - "The Colors Of Latin Jazz - SABROSO!", features eleven tracks of - "Tasty" indeed! A collection of contemporary, smooth jazz, peppered with Latin rhythms and percussion. A musical hybrid that's at once cool & smooth, yet hot & spicy! Sabroso!" A quotation from the liner notes covers for the most part what this album is about, but don't stop there, you're about to take a journey into every color of Latin jazz.

The entire CD is awesome from start to finish, with stand outs and highlights. "ALL THIS LOVE" (El DeBarge) with Pete Escovedo featuring Gerald Albright & George Duke, big hit when first released by the composer, but this goes beyond the original - "SAN SEBASTIAN" (Ed Calle) performance by composer with special guest Arturo Sandoval, with a haunting arrangement that lingers for days - "MISTER E" (Dan Shea) another track featuring Pete Escovedo, smooth jazz is a tall order, and Pete fills it - "SMOOTH OPERATOR" (Audo/St. John) with Mongo Santamaria has the rhythm and tempo you can't get enough of.

Our friends at Concord Records and Nick Phillips keep the standards high with wonderful material from previously released albums. All compilations are superbly suited for this CD, with some of the best artists of today being featured - THE COLORS OF LATIN JAZZ - SABROSO!

Poncho cooks it up, Bien Sabroso.......2007-03-23

Poncho Sanchez recorded this gem of an album and put himself on the musical map for keeps. This, his second release for Concord Picante is non-stop Latin Jazz. The West Coast has long been a hotbed for Latin music and this album brings a lot of that together. Poncho's understanding of Afro-Caribbean rhythms and jazz compositional structure is evident here. The cat has done his homework and it shows.

At the time, Poncho was a relative newcomer to the latin music scene and yet here he rises not only to the challenge but grabs the 1984 Grammy to boot. The band covers guaracha, cha cha cha, guaguanco, descarga in the classic tradition while at the same time weaving those jazz horns thru the musical fabric with taste. Poncho Sanchez, keeping the Latin jazz flame alive and throwing in some Chicano heat to the mix. Bien Sabroso!!! Recommended.
