5 out of 5 stars My favorite.......2007-08-06

The best Oil record for me is the Scream in Blue. The second is this one. For me it is the record that comes closer to what they sound live. I've read a couple of review that complain about the production. I have to disagree. This is the most powerfull Oil record when it comes to sound production. It is raw indeed, but Johns made a very good job by convincing the Oils to forget about synths and to focus on the guitars. And what guitars! There are a couple of songs with harmonica but I can forget it. The five piece (drums, bass, guitars and vocals)is mixed evenlly and every single bit of music is brought up to your face, no post production to mess around with the songs! For me it is like 10,9,8... without synths! Great songs, great sound.

3 out of 5 stars Midnight Oil's least successful experiment.......2005-04-14

Midnight Oil began as a surf-music-inpsired, politically-conscious hard rock band in the late 1970s. Their second album, HEAD INJURIES (1979), is one of the best hard rock albums to come out of Australia during that era (along with, yes, Acy Deecy's BACK IN BLACK). In the early 1980s, however, the band began experimenting with different sounds and different types of song structures. PLACE WITHOUT A POSTCARD is the first (and least successful) result of this change in direction.

The main problem with the album (as others have pointed out) is that the production is terrible. Midnight Oil travelled all the way over to Great Britain to work with Glyn Johns and ended up with this? The songs are, for the most part, pretty good. "Brave Faces," "Don't Wanna Be the One," "Lucky Country," and "Someone Else to Blame" are all potent political rockers just begging for better production. Other highlights include "Armistice Day," "Quinella Holiday," and "If Ned Kelly Were King."

The CD certainly anticipates the epic 10,9,8,7.... but it is hard to recommend it to anyone other than the most ardent Midnight Oil fan. It's better than the debut record and certainly has great potential, but they don't quite pull it off. It's kind of a bummer, because there is potential here for it to be a classic.

3 out of 5 stars Decent album, but not essential.......2004-05-19

This album sounds about what you'd expect the band to sound like between the albums Head Injuries and 10-9-8-7. There are some good songs, notably Brave Faces, Burnie, Quinella Holiday, and Loves For Sale.

The main problem with this album is the production. This is probably the worse MO album from a production and mixing perspective. Even the preceding album, Head Injuries, sounds a lot better (more crystal clear), and also has better songs. If this album was remixed/remastered, it would be much more liked. Still, a stereo with an equalizer can make this album sound fairly good.

Although not an essential album for casual MO fans, this still belongs in all MO fanatic collections.

3 out of 5 stars Great music produced by a deaf man!.......2004-05-08

In the Woody Allen film Hollywood Ending, Allen's character watches clips of a film he was shooting while he was suffering from temporary blindess. After it's over he says "Call Dr. Kevorchian! This movie looks like it was shot by a blind man!"

Place Without A Postcard sounds like an album that was produced by someone who had their ears full of cotton. Glyn Johns had always made music sound very fresh and clear in the past as with The Rolling Stones, The Who, and The Clash. But this time around, Midnight Oil sound like they were playing inside of a tin can.

This is a shame too because if you can actually get your ears past the muddy sounds, you can hear some good things going on. A song like Brave Faces stands out remarkably well in a live setting (see live album Scream In Blue) even if it is compositionally unconventional. The same can be said for Basement Flat; a very good song but it sounds like the beginning was recorded in a basement flat itself. Written In The Heart, Quinella Holiday and Loves On Sale all come at you with the energy of their sophomore album Head Injuries, but sound too tame to be taken seriously. Lucky Country keeps the tradition of the album up being a glorious sounding song but paired with the sonics that make it sound esoteric.

Coming after the crispness that makes Head Injuries an early Midnight Oil favorite, Place Without A Postcard comes across as a small letdown. But if the production job were better, I might even call this album underrated. Only then would you appreciate the anti-militantism of the single Armistice Day.

5 out of 5 stars Simply put... Fantastic Album!.......2004-01-16

This and Breathe are the best two Midnight Oil albums. The songs are aggressive, yet somewhat elusive. When I listen to this disc, I'll find myself playing it over and over again. If you love Midnight Oil then you need this album!

4 out of 5 stars Postcards from various locations.......2007-04-16

David Broza first came to my attention several years ago via his touring with Sting. I kept hearing raves about this singer that I had never heard before, and eventually found a copy of Broza's "Time Of Trains." I was mesmerized by this clearly talented man, who could pick a guitar like nobody's business and had such a beautifully husky voice. There were a few songs on that CD that have stayed with me, especially the title track, "Somebody Make Me Laugh" and "Blood For Blood."

Sadly, that CD did not bring about the American success it was aiming for. Around the world, however, Broza's mix of Hebrew, Spanish and English lyrics with a mix of musical styles has won him a steady audience for almost 30 years. "Painted Postcards" is his latest attempt at finding new listeners in America, combining songs from his albums "Second Street," "Time of Trains" "David Broza" and "Stone Doors." While each of these albums is a fine recording in its own light, they have often been released in America on smaller or labels now gone defunct.

Broza picked some of his favorite songs from both his English and Hebrew catalogs for this 2002 release on Rounder. While Broza writes most of the music himself, he searches for poets and lyricists the world over to either match his spirited music or to translate into Hebrew. If you're a fan of the Gypsy Kings, "It Is You" will warm your cold feet. His association with Sting seems to have influenced "If You Don't Kiss Me." Dire Straits and Eric Clapton are conjured up during "When I Didn't Have a Home." And personally, I have loved "Time Of Trains" since I first heard it in 1993. Broza's multi-cultural music is of a flavor that I wish more could get a taste of and, having been lucky enough to see him perform, experience first hand. "Painted Postcards" will help you take that first sampling.

4 out of 5 stars First time buyer.......2003-03-07

Having never heard David Broza before, I am totally enthralled with this CD. The mix of hebrew and spainish influence creates an exotic combination. I think the guitar work is exceptional.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing New.......2002-09-06

Disappointing. We were hoping for some new material from this fine artist. All he's done is signed on to a new label and re-issued songs, mostly off Stone Doors and the self titled David Broza, which we already have. Better to buy those two CDs because there are several great songs that couldn't be crammed on to one "best of" CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Welcome Suprise.......2004-09-09

I bought this CD because of "Best Of Me" which recieved minor radio play. I was completely surprised by the overall appeal of this CD.

The first track, "As Good As You", is a little reminiscent of Hootie & The Blowfish's "Hannah Jane" with rustic vocals and a strong chorus. Strong tracks include "The One", "Look At You Now" and "Torn Asunder".

This is one CD you can listen to from start to finish and not get bored.

5 out of 5 stars A great band that got stiffed.......2003-04-18

Far Too Jones was a little band I discovered in about 1997 after hearing "Best of Me" on the radio in Chicago. The band had lots of potential, but alas it was not to be realized. After the single "Best of Me" hit minor radio success, the band started to work on a follow up album that is title "Shame and Her Sister", another great album, but their record company restructured and most, if not all, of the smaller bands were dropped.

Back to the album though. The album has a unique sound that few bands come close to comparing to, and none duplicate. From their haunting ballad of "Close to You" (A personal favorite) to the upbeat rock/pop sounds of "Best of Me" the album blends ingeneous lyrics with fun melodies for sounds that make you never want to take the CD out of your player. Other songs such as "As Good As You" (another minor radio hit) and "Nameless" are fun songs that you will want to listen to again and again. Mostly a rock band, although I will admit some pop shows through, Far Too Jones is a CD that you should give a try. Who knows it may start the same love affair with the band it started for me. Also make sure to check out their new band called the clear, they will soon have their new album up for free on their website for people to download.

Happy Listening!

I cant recommend this CD highly enough.........BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars great band.......2002-12-28

If only Far Too Jones was still here.
They are now reformed and are called "the clear".
I let my old cd get scratched up and now I am [out of luck in buying another.
Do not let this happen to one of your favorite band's cds or else you will be[as upset]as I am.
Good luck to them in the future because they are a [great] band!

I recommend that if you read this review, you go out and but this CD immediatly. Give yourself a treat, you'll not be disappointed. I really can't praise these guys enough, P.S. I had no idea what I was getting when I bought this CD; it has become one of my most listened-to albums. Arnold had a genius for romantic melody that moves the soul. I believe his fame will grow in the 21st century as the silliness of modern atonal music is forgotten and the eternal values of melody and beauty regain their place in western culture.

5 out of 5 stars I am a Pan Fan!.......2004-04-25

I do not know about the above album per se, but I do have a prized CD of Ron Elliott's when he created a band named PAN and created it's self-titled debut album, PAN. I have a Japanese release of the CD. I literally listen to this CD at least two or three times a day. The most stunning song on PAN is a song I heard on the radio in 1972 until 1976 called "Lady Honey". When I hear that song I stop everything I am doing and listen. I also love "Rag Doll", "Long Way Home", "Dancing to the Band", "Delinda De Mattae". The entire feel of the CD is that he is madly in love. Whomever he wrote that song about is the luckiest lady in the world. Thank you Ron!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, but not for everyone.......2002-05-15

If you like overproduced, commericial stuff, stay away. If you like lyrics worth listening to, set against some innovative (but not whacked out) musical arrangements, run out and buy this CD. It gets better each time you listen. A master performance.

I can't believe anyone would have the audacity to berate this talented artist, no less spew venom that is completely misguided. This CD is a gem, full of great stories that are put together in a very understated way that is true Ronny (not Ron) Elliott, and put to music that is both enticing and interesting.

This guy is the definition of insurgent country, and this CD is all that and more.

5 out of 5 stars Melodic indie pop with intelligent lyrics.......2003-11-16

This is a solid collection of well-crafted songs, each with a poignant theme of regret. Some of it reminds me of Ben Folds Five, some of it is more Portishead-ish, but it does have its own signature style. I found that some of the songs really hit me right away (George Bailey, Prometheus), and others really grew on me (Stronger, So Far Gone). It's a really pretty album, but not in a cheesy and contrived way. Her vocal and string arrangements are very lush and gorgeous.

5 out of 5 stars Emotional, unique, rawkin!.......2003-10-05

A great CD. Jenny has a unique voice and she really wears her heart on her sleeve -- throws it all out there for her audience. If you like Tori Amos, Bjork or any of the Lilith Fair women, you'll like Jenny. Not that she's that much like any of them, but I think the same audience would dig her. Check it out.

OK --I'm a little biased, as I must have seen the Slickee Boys 20 times back in the heyday of 80's Georgetown/DC Clubs --- I was a DJ at U of MD and I always caught the band when they were in town. The sound quality is lacking, but it does provide the aura of being in a smoke-filled club back when live music did not have choreography or backdrops....just great 60's DIY Garage Rock --

I highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Musicianship.......2000-01-14

I love this recording! The best part about it is Ron Nelson's Passacaglia. I have six recordings of that single piece, and this is the best one! It is so intense, and the fermata at the end almost seems like it will never end! John Adams' Short Ride in a Fast Machine is always a treat to listen to. The music of Frank Ticheli is very intriguing in its rhythmic complexities and musical language. I had never heard of Bob Margolis' Terpsichore before I heard this album. I think it is a wonderful piece, and an excellent interpretation of the styles and moods of the Renaissance dance pieces. Suite Francaise is a great piece as well. There is so much to love in this album, a wonderful compilation! Played with brilliance and conducted with passion. I cannot say enough about this recording. BUY IT! BUY IT NOW!

5 out of 5 stars wind music at its best.......2004-05-16

A wonderful selection of wind band music, some not often heard. Superb playing by the University of Massachusetts Wind Ensemble. Of particular interest to me was the Wilson. Check out the interpretation of Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy - terrific!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful recording of concert band songs.......1999-03-09

This album has a very nice selection of songs by different composers. I particularly like track number three "Dance of the New World" This is a good collection for band students or directors.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Frank Ticheli's Music.......2004-09-03

Our University ensamble has played many, many of Ticheli's pieces and they are some of the most moving, touching pieces to listen to. The recording on this CD is good and almost captures the true emotion you get from listening to Ticheli live.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace.......2004-02-12

Only four stars because I have only heard one song. Alone, this version of Amazing Grace deserves a high rating. It brings tears to my eyes. I am a high school sophomore and I'm principal flute. I'm very grateful that my band director paid the $100 for the score.
