Revelatory........2004-01-27
All that said, I consider this one of the ten most important releases in the history of recording, even though I don't know what the other nine would be. Debussy is one of the master composers of keyboard music, along with Scarlatti, Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms, Schumann, Liszt, Bartok, Ravel, and Prokofiev. So the recording is the equivalent of having Bach play the Goldbergs for you. Does Debussy differ from benchmark performances, like Gieseking? Not to take anything away from Gieseking, but, yes, he does. I can describe it as an extreme inwardness, as if the composer were communing with himself. The fingerwork isn't as sure as some, but the outstanding feature of the playing is its outstanding singing or, considering the composer's subtle temperament, humming. I can't imagine anybody interested in Debussy's piano music passing up this CD.
We also get Debussy's acoustic recordings as Mary Garden's accompanist in the Ariettes oubliees and in an extract from Pelleas. These to me have more problems than the rolls, mainly because the sound is so crude, but I make that judgment precisely because I have the rolls. Without Caswell's dedication, I'd have been extremely grateful for the acoustic recordings.
A primary source for interpreting Debussy.......2002-07-02
The Welte reproducing piano records and plays back many aspects of piano playing (dynamics and touch) at remarkably high fidelity for the time. Thus these piano rolls are primary documents showing how Debussy intended his works to be played. While these recordings to not have the fidelity of modern acoustic recordings, it is possible to detect pedaling, tempo and dynamics. This recording has been the basis of scholarly research, such as the essay by Cecilia Denoyer in the book "Debussy in Performance", edited by James Briscoe.
The acoustic recordings of the vocal works are of much lower fidelity, but do give a sense of Debussy's feel of the piano.
If you are studying Debussy's piano works and want to know how to interpret his notation, this album is for you. If you just want to listen to Debussy's piano works, a modern recording may be more musically pleasing, but you may still enjoy hearing the pieces as they were played by the master himself.

The Hilliard Ensemble bathes these vital vocal works by Josquin in a Mediterranean light: clear, warm, and brilliant. Josquin was a northerner who, like so many other composers of the Renaissance, descended to Italy to pursue his career. The singers bring to life the composer's marriage of the Flemish preoccupation with technique and the southern instinct toward lyricism. This is an extraordinary disc. --Joshua CodyCustomer Reviews:
A good reference disc.......2007-03-20
Beautiful music........2007-01-05
Beneath the objective criticism often lies a subjective grandeur.......2006-07-14
Sacred choral works sung with the subtle graces of stained glass refracting light, still at times synonymous sentiment in tonality looses value in between a few more upbeat numbers. While focusing and authenticating to the vibration of what was undoubtedly a symbolic pillar of faith many centuries ago, one benefits more from a detached awareness from composition in favor of utter immersion into the sublime transitions throughout these hallowed vocals. Although hardly a definitive collection, this disc serves as a good introduction (& painful reminder) to the ancient, purist reception this stilling music once knew.
The Orlando Consort sings Desprez much better..........2005-03-28
While some people may find the contrast between the (extremely)slow, stately religious pieces and the quick, playful songs in French and Italian stimulating, I found it slightly disturbing. I definitely would have preferred a selection of pieces with a greater unity of mood and style.
While the performance is certainly first-rate, the recording seems to me to be below average: when you turn up the volume, an annoying hum is heard in the background. Is this problem due to the inferior quality of my hi-fi? It might be, but the fact is that this maddening defect has appeared only on very few of my cds (it is also very evident on recordings of the King's College Choir).
I recommend in addition to this cd Ockeghem's Mass "De plus en plus" by the Orlando Consort. Ockeghem's Great Lament for the death of Jean Binchois is in my opinion much more beautiful and moving than Desprez's own lament for Ockeghem on this cd.
I also warmly recommend "Desprez: Motets", also by the Orlando Consort, an imported October 2000 Deutsche Grammophon CD, for me one of the best, if not the best Renaissance sacred music recording. IMHO, The Orlando Consort sings and interprets Desprez infinitely better than the Hilliard Ensemble and even beats the Tallis Scholars.
The total duration of this recording is 50 minutes.
Splendid.......2005-02-23

When he was growing up, Andrea Bocelli recalls finding inspiration in a favorite recording of sacred music performed by tenor legend Franco Corelli. Bocelli--who in the meantime has come to inspire millions of fiercely loyal fans himself--returns to the genre as the guiding theme of Sacred Arias. These performances are filled with the singer's phenomenally well-known vocal signature: his flair for long, sweetly floating high notes and the gentle sense of cadence he brings to a melody. It's a mistake to compartmentalize Bocelli into a singer of "operatic" versus "popular" styles: in truth his approach is at heart the same. Lack of color and control in his phrasing remains a drawback, but the emotional empathy Bocelli evokes is never in doubt. The arias collected here sample some of the most famous devotional pieces: Schubert's "Ave Maria" and Mozart's transporting "Ave Verum," as well as an arrangement of "Silent Night" in which Bocelli tries out his English. There's also a decidedly odd choice of bedfellows for a program of "sacred" music, such as a song from Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder (whose "angel" is the object of an overpoweringly erotic attraction) and Handel's figurative ode to a tree, "Ombra mai fu." Still, Bocelli sings with an unfeigned directness that is sure to expand his already enormous following even further. This new special edition includes two bonus tracks on a CD enhanced with a picture gallery as well as a full-length DVD of Bocelli in concert filmed at the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome. --Thomas MayAlbum Description

Superb Modestly Priced Favorite Arias Collection!!!.......2001-02-12
I really love this gift from my bestfriend for it was thoughtful and well, what can I say that this makes an excellant gift for opera neophytes (though I am not an opera neophyte).
The highlight of this CD is track 13, Rossini's "Largo al Factotum" from "The Barber of Seville." When I first heard this, I was contemplating to myself as to where have I heard this before. Then it hit me: Michigan J. Frog's signature tune! (In case people are wondering who on earth is Michigan J. Frog is, he is the Warner Brother's frog; the frog can be seen on WB network channel). I love this track! Buy this for yourself if not this makes a perfect gift for your opera neophyte friend(s)! This track brings joy and smiles on my face everytime I hear this piece!
Wonderful introduction to opera.......2000-12-16
Of course, Big Names do not appear on many Naxos opera sets; but this set is an introduction to that vast area of culture and is meant to be an educational (and of course a promotional ) device. Nevertheless, many of the selections on the CDs are beautifully sung, a very few lack characterization (the arias from"Don Giovanni" and "Nozze di Figaro" for two). But at this incredibly low budget price, who can complain?
As soon as I saw what this set had to offer, I immediately ordered a copy as a seasonal gift for a friend who wants to "get into" opera. I could think of no better gift.
There is a sister set titled

Customer Reviews:
Considering on the other hand that Decca has now recorded many Handel operas with excellent Baroque singers, I find this recording to be somewhat outdated. It wasn't necessary for example to have Sutherland, Horne and Berganza sing two different roles when the same parts have recently been recorded by excellent newcomers like Dessay, Von Otter, or Scholl to name a few. Why stick to the past when the present has so many wonderful Handel singers?
Overall however, a decent introduction to Handel's music.

A Lovely Mix of Old and New........2006-11-14
This volume actually updates an old tape--which I still own!--by adding some of the more recent interest in historical performance practices to some of the older operatic show-biz types on display here.
I very much enjoy Sutherland and similar performers in this material. Talk about razzle-dazzle. Singers like Pavarotti and Tebaldi bring a lot of know-how about beautiful music to Handel, and that is never unwelcome.
While they might not have been terribly musicologically-informed, performers like Sutherland, Horne and Berganza certainly knew more about period performance practices: they indeed initiated the resurgence of such practices in the last three decades. Do other reviewers here perhaps forget that in preferring Dessay over Sutherland?
Meanwhile for the purists, Hogwood, Kirkby and Bowman are certainly more in the original instruments/authenticity-fetish camp: if memory serves, they were not included in the old cassette version. Clearly Decca is aware of the change in performing styles--and perhaps audience tastes--even as they are reflected on this very Amazon page. Frankly, I could use less of these and more of the old-timers.
So yes, this is a mix of old and new. The newest trends are not included. But are they not readily available elsewhere? Meanwhile, like its earlier incarnations, this set is still a marvelous compilation of gorgeous music-making from the deep Decca catalog.

Valuable compendium.......2007-01-24
Rareties available on CD at last!.......2006-03-29
While this newest set does include a lot of bits of this and that, ranging from her very first LPs to excerpts from complete recordings most Sutherland fans already have and a few "live" performances, what is perhaps most significant about it is that it features the complete contents of the "Sutherland Sings Wagner" LP--a real repertoire departure for her--and the double-LP album called "French Opera Gala" (in the U.S.--the British title was "Romantic French Arias"), neither of which, to the best of my knowledge, has been available on CD before. "Opera News" magazine once ran an article in which they asked various stars to name the one album that they felt best represented their artistry for future generations, and Dame Joan selected the "French Opera Gala," so for Sutherland fans, this is a long-awaited treat.
I'm not going to waste space saying how miraculous I consider Dame Joan's artistry. If you are familiar with her work already, you know whether you adore her or not; and if you aren't, this massive set is probably not the best place to start (that would be "The Art of the Prima Donna" album that introduced her to most listeners decades ago)--especially since this newest set doesn't contain the lyrics, a must for newcomers. Let's hope Decca/London gets around to releasing the rest of her recordings intact instead of endlessly scrambling and repackaging the same selections over and over.

She covers three cycles here: 'Ariettes oubliees' (for this listener the most successful on the album), 'Racueil Vasnier', and 'Cinq Poemes de Charles Baudelaire' (contrast these with the recently released Susan Graham version and see what interpretation is all about!).
The collaboration between Upshaw and James Levine is sensitive (if not always the pianism of others..). But the entire recital is uplifting and satisfying for the variation in the songs, recorded sound, the generosity of the disc, and most of all for the musical intelligence in which these songs are performed! Pretty sound spoiled by a bad vocal habit.......2004-05-07
P.S. Since writing this review (quite some time ago), I was fortunate to hear a recording of Ms. Upshaw in a production at the Metropolitan Opera where she didn't do any of her annoying sliding at all - not once - (probably because it was music from a much earlier time) The difference was astounding. It was a glorious performance. It was hard to believe it was the same person. This, more than ever, confirms my opinion that she ruined this recording with a bad singing habit.
Excellent!.......2003-11-26

F)(CK THEM ALL? Certainment!.......2007-01-09
But Madonna's music isn't as remarkable as her public image. In fact if she wasn't Madonna, her CDs would probably be roundly ignored. In my opinion. Mylene Farmer, on the other hand, is no musical lightweight. 'Avant Que l'Ombre' is a CD full of Farmers new model of French Pop -- frothy, cooing pop (Amour N'est Rien), sexy, insinuating electronica (Pornographique), and lush ballads (Ange Parle Moi).
The overall sound is lush, intricately produced, and shiny. In music production, the art of polishing inconsequential music is known as 'buffing a turd,' and like the best music by Janet Jackson, it's refreshing to hear all the tricks of the commercial studio used to polish up music of real consequence.
Since I don't really speak French, my appreciation for her lyrics is limited but I know enough to see some of the subtlety and sly allusions that are there. The best of Farmer's lyrics would not survive translation to English, as they are full of the insinuation and indirection that is uniquely French.
So I'd recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates the best in commercial pop music. It is quite accessible to non-francophones, yet it is different from the common sort of empty contemporary pop. There's simply more here for the listener. And it's worthwhile searching Youtube for her music videos, especially the sly striptease Mylene does in the video for "Amour N'est Rien."

Seriously incredible Handel.......2005-11-15
Piau's voice is light, perfectly focused, like a bright laser beam, absolutely even from top to bottom and with incredible high notes. Her technique is perfect, same for breath control. Her speed and impossibly precise runs defy laws of nature. But of course just that would not be enough for stellar Handel performance of this calibre; she is also a gifted actress who is able to show dramatic colours in every single aria. There is not a single track here which is not a fascinating study of the character, and her interpretations are varied and very memorable: Berenice, fiery, defiant, Cleopatra in her mournful lament... To fully credit Piau's interpretive gifts, I would have to list every aria on this CD. And she chooses such great pieces, many seldom heard at all, all arranged in an imaginative, stimulating programme.
I usually have a bone to pick with Baroque ornamentations from the current singers, having been brought up on a steady diet of Emma Kirkby, Julianne Baird and Lorraine Hunt, who not only improvise their ornamentations, but do it so brilliantly. Sandrine Piau joins this illustrious club of the Ornamentators Par Excellence; her ornamentations are written in (largely by Rousset) but they are just glorious.
The Les Talens Lyriques orchestra under Christophe Rousset, Piau's frequent collaborator in live performances, plays great, though if I had one tiny complaint about this album, it would be that laws of physic do mar their performance a little bit: Piau's voice can move faster than these period instruments, and she sometimes whizzes by the orchestra very slightly ahead of them, in the fast arias. This is actually most evident in the fireworks of the opening aria, Scoglio d'immota, but that's only because she takes it at such superhuman speed, they have to play for their life just to stay with her.
Last but not least, I actually like the cover of this album, I think Piau looks cool, like a porcelain doll. Not that this album would be any less awe inspiring if it came wrapped in brown sandwich paper. This is some seriously amazing Opera Seria and if you love Handel's music, this album is an absolute must-have.
Stunning Work From One of the Top Handel Interpreters.......2005-02-20
Piau displays impeccable taste in her highly personalized program. Instead of going for the more familiar gems like "Ombra mai fú" from "Serse", she has pulled together an anthology of Handelian prime donne that features arias composed over more than two decades. Many are from operas that are relatively obscure but still quite stunning, for example, the defiant "Scoglio d'immota fronte" from "Scipione", the dynamic "Brilla nell' alma un non inteso ancor" from "Alessandro" and the angry, distressed "M'ai resa infelice" from "Deidamia". Even with the better known operas, she choose not the showpieces but the ones that are worthy of rediscovery, such as "Verdi piante, erbette liete" from "Orlando", "Se pieta" from "Giulio Cesare in Egritto", "L'amor ed il destin" from "Partenope" and "Ombre piante, une funeste" from "Rodelinda", in which her painful expressiveness of want certainly gives Fleming a run for her money. Even the order of the program is commendable, as it reflects a wide gamut of emotions that make the recording feel like one cohesive work, even with the variety of characters and dramatic situations and rich vocal demands for which Handel is known. Piau's long-time collaboration with Christophe Rousset, who leads the wondrous and period-authentic playing of Les Talens Lyriques, has produced a seamless rapport that makes this an essential recording. Strongly recommended.

Don't overlook this special gem!.......2005-02-01
Everything is special here, even the cover. In an era when so many solo recitals try to attract us through flashy covers (and often not much more inside), Piau is courageous enough to appear in what may well be one of the most unflattering cover photos ever made. Through this photo, Piau seems to be making a bold statement: "I am not a cover girl, I am an artist".
And what an artist! Every phrase in this recital is delivered with utmost honesty and spectacular technical assurance, nothing is calculated or contrived. What is even more important, every Handelian heroine portrayed here is vividly brought to life. There is not a moment of monotony or routine - the selections cover a variety of moods and allow the artist to display not only her stupendous technique but also phenomenal interpretative gifts.
It is impossible to get tired of Piau's singing! Her voice and singing style should appeal to both camps of opera lovers: devotees of the HIP movement and those who are afraid of HIP because of the stigma of "white, bland voices" that became a trademark of the movement. Piau's voice is small and delicate, but there is nothing "white" or bland about it. It is a gorgeous instrument, flexible and colourful, able to convey a wide range of emotions without resorting to "special effects".
It is of course tempting to compare Piau's recital with the other highly popular Handel discs of 2004 (by Lorraine Hunt, Sarah Connolly, Renee Fleming) but comparisons don't really make much sense here for each of those recitals has its own virtues and each singer her own faithful audience. Yet Piau's disc risks being overlooked in the USA since the French soprano is not quite a household name here (in spite of some marvellous solo recitals in her discography). Let's hope this fantastic new disc will change this. (Kicek)
