Where Do I Begin!.......2003-11-25

On this 2-for-1 digitally re-mastered CD, Jerry Vale does justice to a "Barry Gibb" song, adds the "Vale" touch to a "Carpenters" tune, brings on a storm with his "Ebb Tide", makes you sing along with a country song, and does a paramount job with his movie themes.

The "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" half of this CD, recorded in 1968, contains 100% perfect vocals and gorgeous orchestrations. With it's driving melody and echo effects, Jerry's version of the title song, "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", moves, grooves, and soars to a grand finale, "...Believe me!" And "Ebb Tide" is poetry in motion. Jerry starts the song with gentle phrasing and pensive vocals, actuating a crescendo that builds and builds some more, to an outstanding and vocally challenging peak, and then subsides "...I'm at peace in the web of your arms". It's one of my favorites, and not to be missed. Then there's the beautiful "Yellow Days". I always loved Damita Jo's version of that song, and Jerry Vale's is just as sweet. I love the violin at the beginning and the end of "Release Me". It's a perfect compliment to Jerry's voice, just beautiful. When Jerry sings "There's A Kind Of Hush", you can hear a smile in his voice and you know that he loves the song. Add the lavishly done "Eternally", and it's just that, lavish and dramatic.

With Vale in his tux, the "I Don't Know How To Love Her", half of this CD, recorded in 1971, is as classy as it looks. While some of Jerry's 70's recordings were weak, with too much vocal vibrato, this IS NOT the case with this album. His voice is in STRONG, IMPRESSIVE, and MASCULINE form as he sings "Where Do I Begin" from the movie "Love Story". As the song begins, you can tell by Jerry's delivery of the lyrics that he loves this song, and he keeps your attention. As the second verse comes around, and you hear the dramatic orchestration building, you suddenly realize that Jerry Vale is about to go UP along with that climatic orchestra, to meet all those glorious high notes! He gives it the full Vale treatment. Complimented by the superb orchestration, it's a goose-bump-giving hit. "Moonlight", written by Barry Gibb, of the "BeeGees", is superbly sung by Jerry Vale. His rendition became a hit jukebox single, and is the ONLY publicly released version of the song. Another hit single for Jerry on this CD is "Which Way You Goin Girl". As a jukebox single, it was on the flip side of "Moonlight", and again, Jerry's vocals are strong, crisp, and ringing...it's another one of my favorites. Jerry has sung many "Carpenters" tunes, and on this CD, "Rainy Days And Mondays" is another nice addition to that list. "I Don't Know How To Love Her", from the movie "Jesus Christ Superstar" (The original title is "I Don't Know How To Love HIM") is dramatically orchestrated, and Jerry's vocals are excellent. With its climatic music, I wish the song could have been longer! Then there are the country songs. During the 1990's, as part of Vale's concert lineup, he would include a medley of country songs, and rightly he should. Nobody does a country song like Jerry Vale, which is evident by "Help Me Make It Through The Night", "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife", and "For The Good times", all three of which could have been hit singles in their own right with their smooth vocals, nice backup singers, and excellent orchestrations. Don't be surprised to find yourself singing along.

I have often referred to Jerry Vale as a crooner, but he's really much more than that. With his strong clear tenor vocals, trademark grace notes, and long held high notes, Jerry Vale is a PROFESSIONAL SINGER. Quoting from the back cover of the original vinyl LP "I Don't Know How to Love Her", "...He's not a gimmick, not a trick done with mirrors in order to dazzle. That he has enormous talent is obvious...It's a great voice: clear but full, and beautifully musical..." I believe that says it all.

Ensemble Galilei's music is lilting, elegant and unexpected!.......2002-11-29

With their soulful playing and artful, sometimes even ephemeral arrangements, the six women of Ensemble Galilei convey a rare depth of emotion. In the insert notes, gamba player Carolyn Ann Surrick describes their creative process: "[In making this recording, we engaged in]...a kind of work that is so focused and intense that years can go by in one afternoon... Extraordinary music-making requires trust... [We] live for the times when the only thing that exists right then is the music--when the instruments are speaking as if we don't exist, and they are having their own conversation." Thank you, Ensemble Galilei, for allowing the rest of us the privilege of coming along for the ride! It's simply delectable. This chamber ensemble, featuring fiddle, harp, gamba, oboe, pipes and percussion, can also be heard on their other Telarc release, "From the Isles to the Courts", and "The Mystic and the Muse: Celebrating 600 Years of Women in Music", on the Dorian label.

Sheer beauty, as a lover of English music I found this to be one of the most beautiful of all Shakespearean albums. Such harmony, such subtlety, one wishes that the gentle night will never stop.

Ensemble Galilei provide some excellent arrangements of English renaissance compositions. I believe that John Playford (English Dancing Master) fans will be particularly satisfied with the renditions presented here. It is very unfortunate that E.G. did not provide more arrangements from such early music sources. Some of E.G.'s own compositions seem very weak and not in the renaissance spirit of the rest of the CD. Nonetheless, this CD is highly recommmended.

I found this album to be solid. Very sweet, but not afraid to use percussion which makes it livelier and more fun. I adore the quiet, peacefulness of the music and the flawless execution of these renaissance songs.

Visualizing Beauty.......2000-08-20

I recently had the good fortune to direct a performance of King Lear--the ENTIRE five acts, in a community theatre, non-profit setting. I used twenty-four fully committed non-actors, who for the love of the ideas, participated in this performance. The first and main challenge that I faced was, how do I go "behind" the words, and invoke the right emotions, etc., to give these actors the range and tools needed for an effective, powerful performance? Critical to this performance was the beauty and brilliance of this recording, which I used throughout the various scenes of the play. This helped the performers tremendously, creating the different tapestries in the mind of the Bard. In short, this work is real genius, that I was so happy that I stumbled across. I am now putting in our performance programs, along with our most heart-felt thanks to E.G., the name of the recording and I have copies from Telarc to sell at each performance!

A nice collection of songs.......2005-03-24

Most of the songs on this CD were recorded in the 1960s (only one, "Innamorata," was from the 1950s), but most of the songs were ones that were popular in the 1950s, done by different artists. And this is an ideal sampling of Jerry Vale, because he was really a singer in the style of the 1950s who came up too late. He would have been a very popular singer if he'd been a few years older and able to make his debut in the early 1950s. (If you read my review of one of Jane Morgan's CDs, you may note that I said the same of her!)

"Innamorata" was a hit for Vale, but only the title word was in Italian. By contrast, a number of songs are done with significant parts in Italian as well as in English. (A couple are in Spanish and English, but many more are in Italian.) In one case, "Just Say I Love Her" ("Dicitencello Vuie"), Vic Damone also did it in both languages, though Damone's version has more English than Italian, while Vale's reverses the proportion. On the other hand, in "Tell Me You're Mine" ("Per Un Bacio d'Amor"), Vale's rendition is almost identical to the Gaylords' in the way he uses the two languages. (And of course, in that case the Gaylords' version is definitive, as Ronald Fredianelli, one of the Gaylords, co-wrote the song!)

Vale's version of "You Belong to My Heart" ("Solamente Una Vez") is the only one I've heard which has both the English lyrics and most of the Spanish ones. That alone is a distinction.

All the songs in the collection sound very good, and so I do not hesitate to give it a 5-star rating.

Hit song from the movie "Casino" and more.......2003-07-16

This CD is a nice mix of different song styles sung by the master of love ballads, Jerry Vale. Previously unreleased, and from the movie "Casino", the song "Love Me The Way I Love You", is a haunting and beautifully orchestrated, low bassed, Eqyptian style song, that Jerry Vale sings with extraordinary panache. Also included on this CD, with it's drum pounding, high noted, dramatic ending, is another of my favorite Vale songs, "Love Me With All Your Heart". Add the peppy "Can't Take My Eyes off You", throw in a dash of Italian with "Non Dimenticar", round the whole thing off with Jerry's famous "Al Di La", and you have a superb and SUPER CD that belongs in every collection.

Multitalenteded Individual.......2001-05-14

This is the first Jerry Vale CD that I bought. All I can say is what an unbelievably rich and expressive voice Jerry Vale has! The main reason I bought this CD was for the song "Love Me The Way I Love You", which was featured in the movie "Casino". It was such a moving experience to finally hear the whole song! The same can be said for ALL the songs. This is truly a multitalented man.

If you have "Greatest Hits" and "Sings The Great Italian Hits" (which I both now acquired) you need this CD also, because only two songs ("Innamorata (Sweetheart)" and "Al-di-la") repeats from those CDs. All his songs deserve to be heard!

A 'must-have' for afficiandos of 19th Century Brass Bands.......2003-05-06

Impeccable performance by professional musicians, using antique instruments. The arrangements which include quicksteps, polkas, waltzes and hymns are from the only complete set of Confederate Band Books to survive. Thirty-plus pages of liner notes on the music and the instruments by Dr. Nola Knouse of the Moravian Music Foundation are almost worth the price itself. This CD is a must for anybody who likes Civil War Brass-Band Music.

I found this to be an excellent CD - very good tunes/ good tempi/ and generally very enjoyable - I particularly liked the two waltzes that are included - I can thoroughly recommend this recording

Horrible.......2000-12-17

A pseudo-operatic rendition of greek popular songs. Try Nana Mouskouri's early recordings of some of them and you'll see what I mean. The interpetation is pretentious and kitschy. The voice reminds us of one of those drawing room "recitals", with the bourgeois parents listening proudly to their daughter's efforts in serious music.
