The Book of Genesis tells us that God created "the evening and the morning" on the third day. It's hard to say when is the best time to listen to this southern Christian rock act's rousing tunes, though morning is likely the best, as their anthemic alt-rock is filled with enough praise and worship to get even the most jaded listener through the day. In their 11-year recording history, the band has built up a loyal fanbase, won Dove and Grammy awards, and spent innumerable miles on the road. On Chronology, Vol. 1, Third Day looks back at the first half of their career with a dual CD/DVD disc with characteristic generosity. A handful of live and rare numbers round out new mixes of hits like "Forever" and "I've Always Loved You," while two of their most-loved early numbers, "My Hope Is You" and "Thief," have been entirely re-recorded. The DVD is the real meat here, with five early music videos, six live performances from the Dove shows, and excerpts from eight handheld videos made by fans, which all show how hard these guys can kick it. This is no paint-by-numbers best-of, but an awesome tribute that will satisfy devoted fans and the newly curious alike. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:
Great...even if you already have everything else!.......2007-07-23
I would say that THIS is the CD to introduce other folks to Third Day...but I could say that about all the other ones I've listened to since starting with "Come Together" a few years back.
They're also a fantastic band to see live if you get the chance!
Can't beat this if you're a 3rd Day fan or not one yet.......2007-07-18
The video DVD alone is worth the purchase price for the 2-disk set. Seeing the band evolve from their jumpy-punk early videos to GMA spots then on to smooth recent stuff is priceless! Cry out to Jesus still makes me cry.
3 thumbs up!
Third Day At Their Best.......2007-07-12
The DVD that comes with the CD is also good value. You get to see the guys in their element, just worshipping God with out any inhibitions.
If you love Third Day's music then you will not be disappointed with this venture. I highly recommend you buy this CD.

One of the finest garage rock sets ever assembled. .......2007-06-07
The first disc of the set is particularly impressive. It cobbles together 29 of the best tracks from the first ten CDs of the long-running Pebbles series, as well as three cuts from Ear-Piercing Punk, an offshoot of the series. These songs are simply astounding. The Preachers' cover of "Who Do You Love" opens the album with a menacing burst of drums, some filthy guitars, and an absurdly thuggish, greasy, mean-as-hell vocal. The Grains of Sand keep the party going with the hyperactive "Going Away Baby," which features an ultra-hip vocal and an organ solo that practically bounces off the walls of the recording studio. The Jujus' "You Treat Me Bad" is as absurd as it is catchy, thanks to its oddly appealing impish vocals and shimmering guitar line. The Haunted's "1-2-5" is a churning, greasy punk rocker with a nasty guitar line and a strutting rhythm section. The Wild Knights' "Beaver Patrol" is pure macho-posturing frat-rock, with a hilariously stupid vocal performance and a grinding R&B sensibility. The Lyrics' "So What" is a furious snarling stomper with some truly mean harmonicas. The Green Fuz's "Green Fuz" may very well be the greatest garage rock song of all time- it's inarticulate, deranged, played without an ounce of professionalism, and catchier than anything you've ever experienced. Crank it up. Teddy & The Patches "Suzy Creamchease" is a hilarious Frank Zappa ripoff with a brutal fuzz guitar onslaught, while T.C. Atlantic's "Faces" is a grooving acid storm with some truly trippy lyrics. William Penn V's "Swami" is a gut-bustingly funny piece of acid-rock-garage with some buzzing guitars and an addictive rhythm. The Tree's "No Good Woman" is a raving three-chord pounder with furious vocals, and the Plague's "Go Away" expands on the wildest aspects of the Kinks' early singles. The Gentlemans' "It's A Crying Shame" is a roaring stomper that begs you to sing along with it, and the Omens' "Searching" is a firestorm of swirling organs and roaring guitars. The Foggy Notions' "Need a Little Loving" is a (relatively) slow burning tune with some awesome, sensual vocals. Dean Carter's "Rebel Woman" is a classic piece of salivating desire, and the Lost Agency's "One Girl Man" is a sneering stomper of the highest order. The Trolls' "Every Night & Every Day" is a catchy three-chorder with some surprisingly funny lyrics. The Starfires' "I Never Loved Her" is quiter than some of the other songs here, but it burns with its own fiery intensity. The Beckett Quintet's "No Correspondance" is a merseybeat popper with a shimmering guitar lick. The Dovers' "She's Not Just Anybody" is just plain astounding, a bewitching slice of Beatles-influenced folk rock with a delicate cascade of guitars and a wistful, haunting vocal. The Hysterics' "Everything's There" has what may be the single filthiest vocal performances in history, and the broken-glass guitar line is icing on the cake. The Good Feelings' "Shattered" is a spacey swirl of keyboards and crunching guitars, while the Breakers' "I Ain't Dead Yet" is a defiant rocker with a rumbling melody. The Uncalled For's "Do Like Me" is one of the catchiest songs ever, a strutting popper that steadily builds in intensity. The Gonn's "Doin' Me In" is another one of those incredble garage rock epiphanies- it's a two chord punk apocalaypse with what can only be described as a gloriously desperate vocal. The Mile Ends' "Bottle Up and Go" is a sneering, dissafected raver, and the Bohemian Vendetta's "Enough" pounds along with a smokey organ riff. Keith Kessler closes out the disc with the surging "Don't Crowd Me." So, yep, every single song on disc 1 is awesome.
Disc 2, meanwhile, brings together a bunch of incredibly rare garage rock tunes that've never been reisuued before. They're not all winners, but there are enough good 'uns (such as the Motifs' "Someday" and the Shays' brilliant "Brainwashed") to make it an excellent listen for both newbies and diehard garage fans alike.
This is one of Garage rock's very finest compilations, a testiment to the power of the music at its best. Nobody who's even remotely interestred in garage shoudl be without this.

Don't think twice about picking this one up!.......2004-06-07
Disc 2 is where the collection starts to wane. Containing 26 rare 45's and acetates from around the U.S., including some groups whose names are unknown (!), this is the real reason that even those who have every PEBBLES CD will be in heaven with this set. Not every song on this disc is a classic; as a matter of fact, you might say some of them deserve to be left in the dusty vaults they came from. But the highlights include: The Motifs' "Someday", The Shays' "Brainwashed" (which is bleeped for profanity!), The Sinners' French-language "Sinnerisme", The Mixed Emotions' "Can't You Stop It Now", The Thunderbolts' "Heart So Cold", Peter and the Wolves' "Hey Mama" and "Only Everything" (a cover of Them's "I Can Only Give You Everything"), The Shades' "Down the Road Apiece", The Dynamic Nutones' "Sick and Tired", The Hustlers' "The Sky is Black", The Thorns' "I'm in Love", and an unknown group's "Fed Up". Unfortunately a lot of the songs tend to sound identical to one another, but the fact that they probably weren't heard outside of their particular region makes them a real treat to finally be able to experience!
USA Today.......2004-04-04
The essential pebbles collection has none of this. All of the songs here were made by kids who were emulating everyone else they could see. 1966 was the most prolific musical year in history. And there are no bad songs on disc one. Even disc two is historically interesting. By the way, there are no master tapes to make the cd from. The singles are all that survives now. Some of what is on disc two has only one copy known worldwide. It saddens me to think what likely has been lost over the years.
This is the disc that made me get off my rear end and break out the old bass guitar, at age 42. If you know a kid who listens to Queen or the Rolling Stones, get them this and the nuggets box. We need new blood very badly.

Fatboy Slim and Paul Oakenfold, two of the most famous DJs in the world and kings of big beat and house, respectively, are supremely showcased in this double-CD collection. The Essential Selection, Vol. 1 glorifies each mixmaster's equal, yet mutually exclusive talents in roof raising. The back-to-back discs are an enlightening example of the yin and yang of club music; Fatboy Slim's grounded, drier, giddier expressions of overlapping funk and disco juxtapose Oakenfold's spatial, entrancing continuum supplemented with buzzing, flatulent bass lines, and celestial synths. Both DJs are experts in flow, building beats seamlessly into climactic moments of frenzied, adrenaline-fueled euphoria, then swinging the vibe down again with the subtlety and patience of a free-falling feather. No doubt Fatboy Slim is known for his deliberate lack of subtlety stylistically, but when placed in this context, immediately compared to Oakenfold's ethereal grooves, it's evident that Stormin' Norman possesses copious finesse. Because of their stylistic polarity, like platinum and gold, these DJs shine with matched but multihued brilliance, and like soil and sun, are indispensable components of a diverse dance music ecology. --Beth MassaCustomer Reviews:
Oakenfold's finest trance.......2006-04-24
Certainly Oakenfold's finest trance CD, with Tranceport in second place. The track transitions are seemless [like in Tranceport], so you can just put the CD in and go into, for lack of a better word, a trance. Soothing but with a lot of energy.
You can't call yourself a fan of trance and not hear this.

Two genres, two discs, two different moods.......2002-09-28
If you happen to be an electronica guru, this compilation may not whet your thirst for innovation. The first CD, Fatboy Slim's big beat mix, sounds dated, despite being fairly high energy. True, there are it's fine points, such as the few tracks in the middle of the mix that create an enjoyable climax, but as a whole the mix sounds old and worn. Unless you're a truly big Fatboy Slim fan, his mix probably will have you hitting the "skip" button on your CD player over and over again to escape the repetition of annoying beats.
As for the Oakenfold mix, it's the reason I gave the album 4 stars. Stand-alone, this CD is one of the best trance mixes to come out just before the trance genre began to flood with exhausted, overplayed, producer driven stagnation. Some critics have panned the Oakenfold mix claiming the song selection was second rate. I could not disagree more. Most of the songs are wonderful selections on their own right, utilizing pure emotion. The CD begins with a surrealistic soundbyte of a New York Thanksgiving day television weathercast, which quickly builds into an energetic hill with the likes of "The Spirit" and "Free". The 3 song climax is among the best I've ever heard, and one that can't be missed. Of note is Solarstone's "Seven Cities", which literally makes the listener feel as if he/she is truly on an emotional ride. The closing two songs on the mix are a wonderful cool-down, of note is "Viola" which is one of the best late night driving songs ever.
Overall I think it's a ...investment well worth the cost.

The Essential Jimi Hendrix: Vol.1&2 (2CD)
Jimi Hendrix Manufacturer: Warner Bros / Wea ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD Similar Items:
ASIN: B000008GHX Release Date: 1989-10-23 |
Customer Reviews:
THE FIRST TRUE ULTIMATE JIMI HENDRIX COMPILATION!.......2006-11-29
In my opinion, this compilation is the first true collection of Jimi Hendrix. This compilation along with the Jimi Hendrix Experience Purple Boxset, you will not be doing very bad as far as collecting some of Jimi's most sacred recordings. When this compilation was originally released on cassette and vinyl, they were actually released on two cassettes and on a 2-record set for Volume one and on one record for Volume two. Putting both volumes on a 2-CD set is actually a blessing for all who wish to own this collection if you can find it.
The songs on here are all EXCELLENT! Disc one Volume one contains MANY of Jimi's legendary hit songs such as "Are You Experienced," "Purple Haze," "Hey Joe," "Fire," "Foxey Lady," "The Wind Cries Mary," "I Don't Live Today," "Little Wing," "If 6 Was 9," "Bold As Love," "Little Miss Lover," Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" and "Crosstown Traffic." Disc two Volume two contains the songs such as "All Along The Watchtower," "Izabella," "Freedom," "Dolly Dagger," "Stepping Stone," "Drifting," "Ezy Rider," Monterey's 1967 Live Recording of "Wild Thing," "Machine Gun," THE GREATEST GUITAR SOLO IN ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY, "The Star Spangled Banner" recorded live at Woodstock 1969 and the BLISTERING "Gloria."
As you can see, this is not a bad collection of Jimi at all! EVERY ONE of these songs are legendary and is a breakthrough in the recording technology process. One of the MANY fine examples of this process is the legendary song "Bold As Love." All I will say about this song is listen to the ending of it and you will know what I mean. In my opinion, this song contains one of the most beautiful endings in Rock n' Roll history. Another great example is the song "Are You Experienced?." This song is absolutely legendary, daring and breathtaking with Jimi asking you a BOLD question. The music to "Are You Experienced?" is nothing but incredible and far ahead of its time. When I listen to the song "Drifting," I REALLY TRULY believe that Jimi was drifting away from us which would lead to his unfortunate death on 18 September 1970. In the haunting song "Machine Gun," Jimi was the ONLY PERFORMER who DARED to take us on a journey to the Vietnam war. Through his guitar, Jimi actually created unimaginable sounds and effects such as bullets quickly going off through a machine gun and explosions going off on the battlefield killing many soldiers or hearing their cries. You can also hear the planes flying and crashing in the battlefield through his guitar. In my opinion, you can actually feel Jimi's emotions and tears flowing through his guitar as he is playing this song. "Machine Gun" has to be one of the most if not the most incredible song of the Vietnam war to ever be recorded onto tape. Jimi would also use this same kind of formula on our National Anthem when he performed the "Star Spangled Banner" live at Woodstock in 1969. All I will say about the Hendrix version of the Van Morrison composition song "Gloria" is that this song is a TRUE ROCKER! Other GREAT ROCKERS included in this collection are "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" and "Little Miss Lover." These two songs KICK A*S! I can keep talkng about all the songs contained in this collection, but I would eventually make this review long like many of my other Hendrix reviews in the past. This is a GREAT compilation and is worth buying if you can find it, but I think you know where to start.
In closing, Jimi Hendrix is THE GREATEST GUITARIST OF ALL TIME. In MANY magazine polls, Jimi has pretty much been voted THE GREATEST OF THEM ALL! In a recent poll by Mojo magazine, the "Are You Experienced?" album was voted the GREATEST INSTRUMENTAL album of ALL-TIME! There is NO DOUBT after all these years since Jimi's death in 1970, his influence in Rock n' Roll is fealt to this day. When you hear a great guitar legend play a note through their guitar, Jimi flows through their guitar as well. There will NEVER be another Jimi Hendrix, he is IRREPLACEABLE. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for all of you. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. LONG LIVE ROCK N' ROLL! JIMI LIVES! Rock out always and take care. J.L.
The Perfect Intro To Hendrix.......2004-06-27
This reasonably-priced 2 cd set is the perfect place to start a Hendrix collection. Material from several albums is contained here, with a bit of an emphasis on "Are You Experienced?" and "Electric Ladyland". This is also a great album to have if you only want one Hendrix cd.
Once you've digested this, move on to the individual albums.
