Customer Reviews:
Love this CD!.......2007-07-16
If you like the Celtic Women you'll love this one by Chloe Agnew. She sings like an angel. It includes some of the best songs from the other CDs and includes several new ones.
Beautiful voice.......2007-07-01
Chloe has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. I love this album. I only wish this album had Chloe's rendition of Ava Maria. Chloe is only 18 or 19 and I can only imagine her voice becoming more beautiful as her vocal talents mature. She truly has the voice of an angel!
her voice is too thin..........2007-06-21
Her voice not as satisfied as I expected. Bought this because I want the first song:
walking in the air. Her voice is good for this song, but for the rest of the songs, I think her voice is a little too thin, no strong emotion to support it.
Walking in the Air - Chloe Agnew.......2007-06-20
A perfect choice of songs to showcase the talents of this young "Celtic Woman" soprano. It's a joy to listen to over and over and compliments the other solo CDs put out by the other individuals from the Celtic Women group. So much talent! I will look forward to Chloe's next solo CD.
Celtic Woman #1.......2007-06-14
If you're going to own only one of the myriad of Celtic Woman CD's, this is the one. Yes, there's only one performer; however the range of musical selections is quite large and typical of the best fare on other Celtic Woman productions. It's become my first choice when I'm in this musical mood.

Simply wonderful!.......2007-01-09
If you are a music buff like myself ( and I do like all kinds of music ), than what's not to like about The Boléro, by Ravel? And I don't buy into that hog-wash of a story that Ravel wrote this piece in the beginning of dementia...gimmie a break and give that man credit where credit is due.....The Boléro is a master piece! Ok...my review: It was a pleasure to shop for this Cd on Amazon ( after a disappointing search in a main music store )I found what I was looking for, ordered it and anxiously waited it's delivery, which was only about 5 days. The Cd was delivered in tip-top shape and I have enjoyed repeated plays of The Boléro! ( if it were an LP, the grooves would have been worn down by now! ) Today...it's back to classic rock for me. I would surely order from Amazon again!
quiet time reorganization of the mind.......2007-01-05
Have listened to this over the years from a teen who couldn't understand why anyone would write something so slow and repetitive, to a young married who now understood a vehicle for passion in a world filled with disraction, to a person who hears the joy and passion and struggles of a composer and appreciates the pain as a growth process for humans. Tenderly, hot, good stuff.More please.
Sumptuous.......2007-01-04
To heck with arguments about Elvis, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, etc. Ravel's Bolero was the first ever piece of rock music, so there. This version by Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony totally nails it, always been my favorite version. The trick is to not let things get over the top as the intensity heightens. Flawless readings of the Rapsodie Espagnole and La Valse to boot makes this an essential disc. This is all the evidence you need that Charles Dutoit is the greatest living Ravel interpreter.
You never have enough Ravel - just never........2006-01-15
This two disk set is one of those that you should add to your collection because it is wonderful music, sounds great, and is extremely affordable. Everyone knows and loves "Boléro". Commissioned by Ida Rubinstein as a ballet and premiered in 1928 was not a musical success. At another performance, led by Toscanini, Ravel complained that the tempo was too fast. Toscanini replied that it was the only way to save the work. But it soon became a mass success to Ravel's surprise and consternation. He felt they loved it for all the wrong reasons. The violinist Hélène Jourdan-Morhange relates this interesting story of one incident involving the work:
"Ravel was extremely surprised at the mass success of "Boléro" `They're going to turn it into another "Madelon", he said, rather crossly; and deep down he felt that the obsessive, musico-sexual element in the piece was probably behind its enormous popularity. But one old lady was proof against the contagion. Ravel's brother Edouard saw her, at the first performance, wedged tightly in her seat shouting above the applause `Rubbish! Rubbish!' Maurice, when informed by his brother, replied mysteriously: `That Old Lady got the message!'" from Ravel et nous 1945 page 166.
The other works on this disk are more substantive than the 15-minute crescendo and its constantly changing orchestral colors. The entire "Mother Goose" ballet - who doesn't love this? Although you usually here it performed as the suite. The "Rhapsodie Espagnol" is a favorite and delivers that wonderful Spanish flavor with a French sauce.
"Le tombeau de Couperin" and "Valses nobles et sentimentale" are orchestrations of major piano works (with some alterations in the tombeau) (there are other pieces on these disks that also began as piano works) that are probably more well known to the general public as orchestral works. However, they are very essential works in the pianist's repertoire, and I encourage you to get to know them in that form as well.
"La Valse" is really two things. There is a tribute to Johann Strauss. Ravel admitted that every composer wanted to write a very good waltz, but that it was very difficult. So, he wrote this symphonic waltz as a tribute. However, the second half is something else, is it not? There is decadence and a madness to it that seems like a nightmare to me. As if we are all trapped in this thing until everything falls apart with pain and loss into nothing. A fascinating piece.
There are other small and popular pieces on this disk that are all done well.

The Best of Ravel By Master Conductor And Orchestra.......2005-11-10
French-Canadian conductor Charles Dutoit and the Motneral Symphony Orchestra deliver what is the most musically satisfying collection of Ravel Bolero's French music. At a fine price, this is a fine jewel, with moments that sparkle and burn with a beautiful fire. The first track is of course the famous Bolero, with its hypnotic, singular theme that is expanded into a climatic crescendo which is overtly sexual, primal and sensuous. It was originally a ballet about a Spanish dancer (dancing the bolero of course) in a bawdy cafe. She is spurred on to dance even more erotically by the lusty men until we can assume the men can take no more. The Rhapsody Espagnole is an evocative portrait of Spain, with lyrical passages and tonal beauty. The Valse is another classic of French music of the early 20th century. Ravel's mother had died prior to the premiere. It is a slow, romantic waltz that escalates into a frenzied dance of death. In musical terms, there is nothing too different from La Valse and Bolero. They are both basically one motif that is repeated but changes in volume and pacing. The Pavane For A Dead Princess is my favorite work of his. It is possibly the most gorgeous funeral music one will ever hear. Far from being a melancholy piece, it is a stately, Renaissance-like work that pays homage to exoticism of the East and Romanticism of the West. The Dead Princess we assume is either Moorish or Spanish and the music is lilting and spiritual without ever reaching the heights of frustration or despair that Bolero or Valse take on. The Tomb of Couperin is also a funereal piece but its beauty lies in its imitation of Baroque music. Couperin was a Baroque composer of keyboard works. The music is aptly called neo-baroque or neoclassical since it was composed in the 20th century. This same style is embedded in Valses Nobles Et Sentimentales and Minuet Antique- all works that reflect the music of the Baroque and classical eras, an homage to Handel and Gluck. Daphne Et Cloe is perhaps his most ambitious work, as it expands on the Baroque classic and makes it more operatic and orchestrally grander. All fans of Ravel will want to own this recording. Dutoit knows this music down to a T and the orchestra captures nuance and subtlety in a variety of both light and dark textures. The music is brimming with life and the sound is crisp and beautifully remastered.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful set of orchestral music for an amazing price.......2007-08-05
I will admit that when I first ordered this 20 cd set from Amazon I was very skeptical and hesitant. I figured what kind of quality am I going to get for $16.97?! But when I got it in the mail and started listening to some of the cd's I was more than pleasantly surprised. The music contents on each is cd has the complete versions of the each song or theme. You know how a lot of cd sets just have the short versions or arrangemnts of songs to cut down on the price, but not on this set. Every cd runs anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours of listening time. Even though the box set is called orchestral spectaculars if you like piano music there is a Liszt cd in the set with The Fantasy on Beethoven's The Ruins of Athens for piano, Malediction for piano and orchestra and Grande Fantasie Symphonique on Berlioz's Lelio for piano and orchestra. There is also a Rachmaninov in the set with his First Piano Concerto in F Sharp Minor and the original full length 30 minute version of his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Even if you listen to mostly piano music there are many versions based on them. For example, Brahms 21 Hungarian Dances that were written for solo piano, but in this set they are orchestrated. I had never heard the pieces like that before. It was nice to get a different perspective of the music. The same goes for Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition also written for piano, but here it is in a symphonic form and I enjoyed it just as much as the solo piano version. If you love opera, but are maybe someone that likes the orchestral part more than the singing there are many cd's in this set for that as well. There are 2 cd's of Wagner's music with my favorite prelude of all time Isolde's Love Death from Tristan and Isolde. Overtures from all of Rossini's and Rimsky Korsakov's operas. I think this cd would be a great place to start for someone who is new to classical music and doesn't want to spend a lot of money or if you love classical music as I do and want to hear new versions of your favorite pieces or just want to add to your cd collection you can do that for under $1.00 a cd. How many times have we all spent more than the price of this set for only one cd? I highly recommend this set. The sound quality and choices of music are excellent. Anyone who buys this will not be disappointed.
A good gift for novice.......2007-05-12

There may be sexier complete D&Cs on disc, but few are as well recorded, clearly balanced, expertly paced, and shaded with the suppleness that Boulez and the Berlin Philharmonic bring to this rendition of Ravel's sumptuous ballet. If that's not enough, Boulez's dazzling La Valse caps things off with a bang. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
Demonstration class CD.......2006-01-30
The French impressionist composer, Maurice Ravel, did enjoy writing for the medium of dance. His Spanish influenced works exemplify that. This CD includes two works written for the Ballet Russe: the complete ballet of Daphnis et Chloe and the single movement La Valse.
Daphnis and Chloe is a love story surrounded by Greek mythology. Set in three parts (totaling about 57 minutes), the first part deals with the meeting and courtship of the couple. Eventually, there is a dance-off between Chloe's two suitors, a vile peasant, and the charming Daphnis. A humorous episode shows the farmer dance and the crowd laughing him off the stage. In time, a band of pirates invade and capture Chloe, ending Part One. Part Two takes place at the pirate camp, where a rugged and rollicking dance introduces the pirates. Chloe is forced to dance for the pirate king; she pleads to be let go. After Daphnis prays to the God Pan, Pan and his creatures set upon the pirate camp and the couple reunite to begin Part Three. The last section retells the lengthy story of Pan and Syrinx, and all ends in jubilation. The music is Ravel at his most impressionistic, but also showing his vivid orchestral writing. There is such dramatic and Romantic sweep to the music; lush string and wind writing, exciting and varied dances, and creative themes and colors. Much of the music is also virtuosic, with exceptional writing for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. An air of mysticism is also added by including wordless chorus throughout the work, and a few exciting moments which include a wind-machine. The love story is amply told with Ravel's lush and vivid colors, as well as an interesting story line.
The ballet is coupled with La Valse, subtitled Poeme choreographique. It is a sort of nightmarish, grotesque Viennese Waltz. The beginning is filled with low tessitura sounds, and the music rises and falls until the end, when the waltz is thrown in your face. Much like other works of Ravel's impressionism, the colors are vivid, not fuzzy, and perhaps in this case, a bit expressionistic and dark. It is a great ride and a unique work.
Pierre Boulez is a consummate master of Claude Debussy interpretations, and it helps him in this disk. Boulez makes the ballet shimmer, always following very closely to the score, observing all of Ravel's tempo, dynamic, and articulation markings to a "T". The Berlin Philharmonic surprisingly tackles this French music with much gusto. They have a fullness and weight that is required from the music and gives the music a deep sheen. This is aided by DG's 4-dimension recording, giving the ensemble warmth and remarkable unity and ensemble. I do not suggest this CD as a starting point of experiencing Ravel; but it certainly has its high merits and great for any fan of Ravel. Beautiful and ravishing music. TT: 70:46
Complete "Daphnis", And Completely Brilliant.......2006-01-01
Having had such success in their interpretations of five of Maurice Ravel's best-loved pieces, including "Bolero", in 1993, conductor Pierre Boulez came back to lead Karajan's Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra the following year with this brilliant recording of the composer's so-called "choreographic poem" "Daphnis And Chloe."
But instead of breaking it up into the two suites as had long been custom to do, Boulez decided to do the whole thing unabridged in all its powerful and even sensual glory. The result is perhaps the single greatest complete recording of this massive 57 minute-long work, complete with Ravel's vivid orchestral colours, wind machine, and a wordless chorus (this one being the Berlin Radio Chorus). As in their previous Ravel sojourn, Boulez and the Berlin Philharmonic bring Ravel's musical vision to life with extreme brilliance. Their performance of "La Valse", Ravel's masterful 20th century tribute to the waltz form laid down by Vienna's Strauss dynasty, to conclude the recording is also top-notch.
Boulez is still considered something of a controversial conductor in some quarters despite having been associated with many of the world's greatest orchestras for decades now, but recordings like these also ensure that he is one of the best there is around, particularly with respect to the 20th century repertoire.
a beautiful recording.......2005-10-08
These are great works and the sound here is nearly perfect. The dynamics on this recording can be truly shocking so be careful when you turn it up to hear the quieter details!
I think this is a great version of these pieces and recommend it highly.
Ravel's exotic, passionate, sensuous complete ballet score.......2005-05-28
While there are numerous performances of the Suite 1 and Suite 2 extracted from Maurice Ravel's magnificently and passionately orchestral work 'Daphnis Et Chloé', there are far too few performances or recordings of this important ballet score. Scored for huge orchestra and large wordless chorus, the impact of hearing this work in a live performance is truly overwhelming, the sort of experience that still exhumes the old Victorian 'swoon' effect. Having just returned from the wonders of Disney Hall in Los Angeles where Esa-Pekka Salonen and the LA Phil with the Pacific Chorale performed the entire work in the finest, most intricately detailed yet wholly sensuous sound reverberating throughout the complete spectrum and ambience of that great hall this listener has ever experienced, the need for an encore brought this CD with Pierre Boulez and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus off the shelf and into the machine.
Boulez also works magic with this score, revealing the entire seemingly capricious rhythmic changes and dynamics spectrum like the master conductor he is. The orchestra is sensitive to his every thought and the addition of the choral color is kept in perfect balance with the orchestral fabric, treating the chorus as simply additional orchestral members just as Ravel wanted. It is a glorious recording.
The one reservation with this CD is the 'encore' of tacking 'La Valse' on at the end. As if the passion of the Daphnis Et Chloé weren't enough, this popular blockbuster by Ravel, gorgeous though it is, seems to take away from the climax of the ballet. It simply isn't necessary to include it on the disc and while it is brilliantly played, it detracts from the beauty of the ballet performance. Knowing when to stop is really important when programming music both in the hall and on CD. Grady Harp, May 05
Excellent, and a bit unnatural.......2005-04-01
I read somewhere that this was a "Daphnis and Chloe" for the 21st Century. And that certainly seems to be what the makers of this album were aiming for. The details and the sound are eerily clear, crisp, and, often shockingly, loud. It sounds as though each individual instrument had its own microphone for this recording. This gives the recording an unrealistic, nearly modern rock sound which may be making Ravel do cartwheels in his grave.
Still, this is my favorite piece of music, and I'm glad it was chosen for such an overblown treatment. I often think that this is a good way to get semi-fans of classical music (the ones who just like the big loud things) more interested in better music. Plus, it is a great performance overall, and the absurdly detailed sound has allowed me to hear previously hidden instrument's parts.
For something that MAY be truer to Ravel's vision (but, who knows for sure, eh?) listen to Charles Munch or, of course, Charles Dutoit.
As for La Valse, I think it's always a foolish idea when CD companies put a smaller work after a major one -- it spoils the effect. Still, it's a fine performance of a great piece (but,
Charles Munch's version is still my favorite, and apparently the favorite of the other people who reviewed it, too).

Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

awesome sound, even after 50 years. This is the recording that has yet to be beat.
Classic Recording of Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe Remains Unsurpassed.......2007-02-21
This classic recording should not be missed by any fan of Maurice Ravel's masterpiece, Daphnis et Chloe. A superb performance by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under conductor Charles Munch. Munch brings out more feeling, more romance, and more beauty out of Daphnis et Chloe - my favorite Ravel work - than any other conductor I have ever heard.
Munch is the best interpretor for Ravel!.......2005-09-05
Ravel is my favorite composer, and Charles Munch has to be my favorite conducter. This interpretation of Daphnis is outstanding, follows the score perfectly as Ravel would have wanted. I was amazed how clean this c.d. sounded, this was my first Living Stereo SACD in my collection along with Reiner's Bartok Concerto for orchestra and Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra, along with Munch's Betthovan Symphonies and Saint-Saens's Organ Symphony. I love how the chorus blends in with the orchestra, but it didn't sound as though it was behind the stage according to the score. The wind machine at the end of Act 1 is amazing. I've listened to samples on other recordings of Daphnis and none can compare to Munch's. Munch's interpretation is full of emotion (especially in the lover's theme), which is required for performing Ravel's masterpiece. I'm happy that I'm finding great old recordings at great prices becuase I'm not impressed with today's orchestras.
One of the legendary Ravel recordings........2005-08-11
One of the all-time greatest Ravel discs now comes in even superior sound quality. Fifty years after date, Charles Munch's 1955 reading remains nothing less than ideal by its totally spontaneous drive, its unerring sense of colour and atmosphere, while the virtuosic playing of the Boston Symphony is quite simply outstanding. The beautifully balanced sound (always a great asset of these early RCA stereo recordings) is most impressively rendered by the DSD technology.
A true gem of the classical catalogue, a clear first-choice for Daphnis and Chloe - not to be missed by any serious collector.
Great recording, but not for ipod.......2005-06-04
I agree with others about the quality of the performance. But be forwarned that this hybrid CD DOES NOT PLAY ON ANY PC OR MAC. My wife and I share a music collection, I play music in my studio on my computer or ipod. But any computer which reads both CD and DVD format will be confused by this hybrid SACD. That spells the end of that technology, it seems to me. I got the slightly older version on regular CD. Sounds perhaps slightly 'thinner' on my HiFi than this version, but at least it plays on my Mac.

Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Superb Saigon.......2007-01-26
Wonderful to be able to catch the entire essence of Saigon. The highlights are good but, to be able to catch EVERY aspect of the show.....is amazing. Completely suggest for any diehard fan!
1989 London Cast is much better that this CD.......2006-12-15
Lea Solonga will always be Miss Saigon. Not putting her on this CD is a crime.
A must for any Miss Saigon fan!!.......2006-08-20
Miss Saigon is my favorite all-time musical! I was hesitant when buying this recording because in my mind Lea Salonga is and always will be Kim! But I was pleasantly surprised. Joanna Ampil as Kim holds her own. While she doesn't have the vocal range of Lea, she has a beautiful, crisp voice which she uses to emote the emotional turmoil of Kim. She expresses herself in a way that makes you feel her love, pain and anguish and in turn she makes this part her own. The rest of the cast is superb (especially the amazing Ruthie Henshall as Ellen) but make no mistake, this show belongs to Ampil!
I also fell in love with some of the material left out of the LCR. There a beautiful bridges and songs which enrich the story. "Back in Town" stands out for me because of the gorgeous melodies. Anyone who has fallen in love with the story of "Miss Saigon" will appreciate these added gems! This cast recording is definitely worth a listen!!
Superb.......2006-06-30
This 1995 studio recording is fabulous. While I don't necessarily prefer it entirely over the original cast recording, there are elements to this recording that are over and above the original.
Joanna Ampil, while delightful as Kim, lacks Lea Salonga's essence. There are moments I find her, how shall I say it - too much? - even when the score calls for drama. Perhaps it is the over enunciation of certain words, or perhaps it is my yearning for Salonga's angelic, crystal clear rendition. I might have preferred Toronto's Ma-Anne Dionisio on this recording as well. Kevin Gray, as The Engineer, is nothing short of thrilling. He was fabulous on stage and just as magical on this CD - lending a greasy, snake-like feel to the role. Hinton Battle and Peter Cousens disappoint slightly (what is it with Peter Cousens' heartless, cold reading-esque "You shouldn't be here"?); Sonia Swaby a perfect Gigi; but Ruthie Henshall - beyond words! What I would have given to see her and Lea Salonga in New York. And perhaps the most wonderful performance on this CD is that of Charles Azulay's - his Thuy is deeper and much more complex than the original Thuy.
The extra music and lyrics suddenly provide the bridge between gaps found in the OLC. For example, in the original recording, on disc one, it goes straight from Kim and Ellen's beautiful ballad, "I Still Believe," straight into the Engineer's shrieking, "Are you waiting for them to kill me? Did you not get what he said? There's a big screw loose inside you - I will rip it out of your head!" Even having seen the show, I'd forgotten what the moments in between were - what was the Engineering going on about? On this complete recording is a vital part of the show - a powerful explanation of Kim and Thuy's past, and an essential look into the very things Thuy himself hopes for, as well as the man he has has become. Also, whereas the OLC finishes disc one at This Is The Hour, the studio recording goes straight into I'd Give My Life For You, providing us with the Entr'acte on the second disc.
The finale is an improvement as well. While seemingly shorter, it is undoubtedly more forceful and significant. The heart is the same; but there's less of Kim "praying" to her parents and more of her concentrating on her very last moments with Tam, the very one who has "sustained her for miles."
The music of Miss Saigon is captivating, capturing the very essence of Kim and Chris' doomed love, as well as the shattered fantasies of the other characters. It is all at once heartbreaking, hopeful, and soaring. A lovely addition to any music theater lover's collection.
Fantastic.......2006-05-21
After listening to the OLC all my life, I was desperate to see the show, but it had closed in London. But then something amazing happened - Cameron Mackintosh announced a new touring production. Off I went, and it was not disappointing. I immediately invested in the CSR, eager to know the parts omitted from the OLC, and again, it was certainly not disappointing.
First of all, like the Les Miserables CSR, there is much more 'voice acting', (in lack of a better term), such as shouts in 'The Heat is On' and more screams in 'The Fall of Saigon'. When I listened to it, it felt like I was there, in the action. I could see the show play out in front of me.
The cast is also fantastic, and I enjoy Joanna Ampil's performance as Kim just as much as Lea Salonga's, as well as strongly favouring Peter Cousens as opposed to Simon Bowman, whose vibrato is just too much to bear someatimes. And Kevin Gray, well, fantastic! He really brought out the sinister character of the Engineer, stealing the show in my opinion. Sonia Swaby is a nice alternative as Gigi, (with somewhat of a 'cleaner' voice than the OLC), and Thuy is excellent also, providing an intense performance. The only weak link in my opinion is Hinton Battle as John, who, though he plays the American G.I. aspect of the character well, his ad libs in Bui Doi are simply awful, (a shame as it is one of my favourites).
As for the orhcestrations...well, the orchestrations don't seem to be too different from the original, but obviousley feel fuller.
My two favourite tracks are Back in Town/You will not touch him, as it's great to see it in its full form, (this bit also got me the most emotionally in the theatre, not Bui Doi or the ending, this bit), and The American Dream, with the dance section intact! I do however favour the original orchestrations for the dance section, (heard on 'The Heat is on' VHS), to the slinky saxaphone on this CD). I also love 'The Fall of Saigon'.
One thing mentioned alot when regarding Miss Saigon is the lyrics. Many complain about their simplicity, but apart from some occasional comically horiffic rhymes, ('first stop Bangkok, then I roam, cross that ocean white with foam'), I don't think the lyrcis are terrible at all.
What makes Saigon most special for me, (along with Phantom, Les Mis and Cats), is that I was in love with the music long before I ever saw the show, so it wasn't the helicopter, the cadillac, or the Ho Chi Minh statue that wowed me. It was the music, and this CD is a perfect testament to the fact that British (well, French/British in thisnd for making grown men across the world cry like babies, ;-). case), musicals don't depend on scenery after all. Bravo Boubil & Schonberg for a fantastic show, a
